Alzheimer's and its consequences for the family dynamics is a staple diet of international, festival-friendly cinema, as we can see year after year. Usually, the very topic is used to tell a terminally tragic story, but other roads are also possible. How about a journey of reconciliation?
This is the case with Patrick Dickinson's “Cottontail”, developed from his earlier short “Usagi-san” (2013). The film premiered at Rome Film Festival last year, bringing its auteur the award for the best debut (fiction) feature. It was also screened at Belgrade International Film Festival – Fest, just before its release in Japan, which is, in its own merit, a success for a small indie that is predominantly a British co-production.
However, the story starts in Japan, where recently widowed former writer Kenzaburo (Lily Franky) has to come to terms with his beloved wife Akiko's (Tae Kimura) passing as the consequence of Alzheimer's. In his stubbornness,...

William Astor, who co-founded kids TV juggernaut Silvergate Media, has stepped down as the company’s chair.
Silvergate, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in 2019, quietly re-branded as Sony Pictures Television – Kids in 2022.
“I can confirm I am no longer associated with Sony and have resigned as director and chairman,” Astor told Variety. He stepped down at the end of December.
Astor originally co-founded the company alongside well-known British television producer Waheed Alli back in 2011. It is best known for producing children’s animated franchises “Octonauts” — which has inspired films and theme park attractions across the world — and Nickelodeon animation “Peter Rabbit,” based on the classic children’s books by Beatrix Potter. It has also produced shows including “Hilda,” a Netflix animated series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels of the same name, and Nickelodeon’s “Sunny Day,” about the adventures of a young hair stylist.

Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

In the 20-plus years since “Shrek” burned up the box office, the fairytale with a postmodern twist has become such a standardized genre, one wonders whether kids might be slightly thrown by one that plays out completely in earnest. They aren’t about to be tested in that regard by “The Amazing Maurice,” a loose, goofy riff on The Pied Piper of Hamelin that takes every available opportunity to draw viewers’ attention to the traditions being broken, or at least irreverently lampshaded. But courtesy of source material by offbeat fantasy maestro Terry Pratchett, it’s genuinely eccentric enough — with its sly talking cat, intrepid band of gold-hearted rats and chronic aversion to keeping the fourth wall intact — to come off as charming rather than smarmy.
Pratchett’s sensibility fuses comfortably with that of veteran screenwriter Terry Rossio — the man behind “Shrek,” among other blockbusters — in a film that tilts slightly...

Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of eccentric Edwardian artist famed for his cute cats is brimful of star cameos but gets lost in mannered performances
Here is a sentimental biopic that buries you in a fusillade of quirks and tics and flicks, an overegged pudding of a film with producer-star Benedict Cumberbatch once again going into Sherlock Turing mode. He plays eccentric Edwardian artist and illustrator Louis Wain, a lively and arguably brilliant man who might today be considered neurodiverse, and who certainly suffered from depression. But for all his gifts, Wain finally became famous for just one thing: his hugely successful cute drawings of cats in jokey poses for the Illustrated London News. In Britain – and the US, where he was also popular – Wain could claim to have reinvented the cat as a lovable domestic familiar, the feline version of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit. But Wain was stricken with...

Paramount’s “A Quiet Place — Part II” has become the first post-pandemic film to hit $100 million at the domestic box office and is within striking distance of the No. 1 spot on the weekend charts as Warner Bros.’ “In The Heights” is falling below pre-release estimates.
The John Krasinski horror film hit the big milestone on its third Friday in theaters, grossing $3.7 million from 3,515 screens as industry estimates peg the film for a No. 2 finish this weekend with $11.4 million, which would give it a domestic total of $108 million.
“In The Heights” is currently projected to open at No. 1 at the box office as it opens simultaneously on HBO Max; but after grossing $5 million from 3,456 screens on Friday, it is only estimated to earn an opening of $13 million. While the U.S. box office has taken big strides in getting back to normal over the last two weeks, theaters are hoping that Warner Bros.’ “In The Heights” and Sony’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” will kick the recovery process up to a new level.
Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical is heading to theaters with widespread acclaim behind it. Critics have given a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes with many declaring it the first contender in the 2022 Oscar race.

Sony’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” is set to scamper across China starting June 11, a week before it scurries to screens in the U.S. on June 18.
The film was initially schedule to release in February 2020, but was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It debuted in Australia and New Zealand on March 25 and other scattered territories earlier this month.
“Peter Rabbit 2” was the top film earlier this week in the U.K., when around 80% of indoor cinemas in England, Scotland and Wales re-opened on May 17 after months of Covid-19-related closures. The title led the pack of 14 new releases to earn $558,000 from 334 sites on Monday and Tuesday, according to Comscore figures.

Voiced by Corden, Peter tumbles into a life of crime in a part-animated caper that’s occasionally cute but mostly bland
The new Peter Rabbit film is here – as before directed and co-written by Will Gluck and the hero cheekily voiced by James Corden – presenting a U-certificate entertainment that shows rabbits wisecracking and getting up to larks but thankfully uninterested in breeding or sexual congress of any sort.
Beatrix Potter’s creation has returned for a movie sequel that combines live-action humans and CGI bunnies whose co-existence on camera is seamlessly achieved as before in that bright, flat, bland light, as if the screen has been laminated. Some of the story takes place in the picturesque town of Gloucester rather than the Lake District; naturally, we were all hoping Peter Rabbit 2 would show Peter Rabbit’s dad as a young man in the old country, a bandit in the countryside,...

The first “Peter Rabbit” movie ends with one of the human leads turning the story into an illustrated storybook; “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” sees that author grappling with turning the bunny story into a grotesque exaggeration of itself in order to reach a larger audience.

Beatrix Potter’s beloved literary character Peter Rabbit suffered from a bit of an identity crisis in his contemporized big-screen debut. In 2018’s “Peter Rabbit,” his headstrong, mischievous spirit didn’t bear more than a passing resemblance to the fundamental virtues the author had fused into her expansive children’s book series. He was reckless, arrogant and downright wicked, barely learning much from the ramifications of his dastardly, chaotic shenanigans. The release itself even caused a kerfuffle over allergy bullying, with some parents and one major organization objecting to a scene where the CG hare terrorizes his harried human adversary with an allergen, which led to the studio having to issue an apology.
But in returning director Will Gluck’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” we reunite with a far more remorseful, practically rehabilitated rabble-rouser, who’s struggling to rectify how the world sees him versus how he sees himself.

Proving every bit as charmless and frenetic as its 2018 CG-animated predecessor, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway once again goes about chaotically tossing bunny droppings over the perfectly fertile ground that is the Beatrix Potter source material.
While the author herself was the first to admit that her main protagonist could be “naughty,” returning director Will Gluck, this time teaming with Patrick Burleigh on the underplotted script, chooses to further nudge the definition toward the brattier limits of mischievous — pushing Peter more into the guise of a floppy-eared Alvin than a cotton-tailed Paddington. Just over two weeks after it was announced that “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” would release on May 14, the film’s premiere date has now bounced back two months to July 2.
The animated sequel was originally scheduled for June, but will now occupy Independence Day weekend at the box office. “Minions 2” was originally slated to open on July 2, but was recently delayed a full year to July 1, 2022.
Though the box office is slowly making a comeback now that theaters in New York City and Los Angeles have opened at limited capacity, animated family films continue to have the most success. Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” has dominated the top spot for the past two weeks, and Warner Bros.’ “Tom and Jerry” debuted to $14 million in the last weekend of February. Sony has pushed the worldwide release date of the family film “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” two months to July 2, 2021, the studio announced on Friday.
The family film was originally slated for a February 2020 release. The latest delay marks the seventh move for its release.
“Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” is a live-action, CGI-hybrid family film with James Corden voicing Beatrix Potter’s iconic rabbit character, and it’s a follow-up to the 2018 movie “Peter Rabbit.” That film made $351.2 million worldwide, with just about two-thirds of that total coming internationally. The hope with the sequel is that the film would open in most international markets first. But piracy risks complicate things, and Universal recently moved “Trolls World Tour” into the Easter holiday after “No Time To Die” vacated the slot, so the shift in the U.S. makes sense for the studio.

The Oscar race for animated short reflects the zeitgeist and the ascendance of streaming. And all five nominees explore the turmoil of a divided country and world, where the need for unity is the best salvation for attaining happiness and closure.
The favorite is Netflix’s first animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You,” about a grieving mother and father visited by shadows of themselves and their deceased young daughter (who was the victim of a school shooting). The monochromatic, hand-drawn short, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”), boasts an illustrated style that represents haunting memories, bolstered by an all-female animation team supervised by CalArts graduate Youngran Nho. Laura Dern executive produced the short and Maryann Garger (“The Lego Ninjago Movie”) produced with Gary Gilbert (“La La Land”), Gerald Chamales (“The Irishman”), and Govier.

It’s no surprise Pixar Animation Studios has landed two animated shorts on the Oscar shortlist.
With such films as “Inside Out” and “Up,” Pixar can tell stories like no other. Each tale delivers a warm emotional punch. And that comes from the notion that many of the studio’s stories start from a personal perspective.
It’s no different with its contenders from its SparkShorts program, “Burrow” and “Out.” SparkShorts allows animators six months to develop and produce a short.
Madeline Sharafian has always loved bunnies, her childhood nickname was “Rabbit,” and while going through sketchbooks from her college days, she had found a sketch of a burrow. When the opportunity to create a SparkShort came up, Sharafian jumped at the chance.
Animation supervisor Benjamin Su was immediately attracted when he saw Sharafian’s “Burrow” presentation. “The characters, the message behind the film and the designs were so charming,...

The diaries of the late actor Alan Rickman — best known for playing Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” movies — will be published as a book in fall 2022.
As reported by The Guardian, Rickman’s journals covered everything from his thoughts on acting to insights on friendships and politics. The avid theater-goer also reviewed plays he attended and shared behind-the-scenes stories from the set of “Harry Potter,” which he was a part of for a decade, between 2001 and 2011.
The 27 volumes of handwritten diaries, spanning more than 25 years of Rickman’s life and career, will be edited down into a single book. The British actor began writing his journals in the early ’90s with the intention of publishing them. When Rickman started this personal project, his career had taken off with roles that included Valmont in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” at the Royal Shakespeare Company and on-screen as Hans Gruber in 1988’s “Die Hard.

Peter Rabbit hit theaters in February 2018 as a hybrid live-action/CGI franchise reboot that injected the classic stories of Beatrix Potter with contemporary energy. The result was a film that – akin to the stealthy precision of Peter in Farmer McGregor’s garden – quietly banked $115 million domestically, totaling $351.2 million globally, and was even the U.K.’s top family film of 2018, out-grossing Pixar’s Coco.
Consequently, it didn’t take Sony Pictures long to consider Peter Rabbit 2, giving it the official greenlight and a 2020 release date; a move made just one month after the original’s release. Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return, as will director Will Gluck, who, just as with the first film, wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh.

Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return, as will director Will Gluck, who, just as with the first film, wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh.

Sony has pushed the worldwide release date of the family film “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” to August 7 over fears of the coronavirus after it was originally slated to start rolling out abroad at the end of this month, an individual with knowledge of the shift told TheWrap.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sony shifted the European release date for the film, and the change to the domestic release date, originally meant for April 3, was expected to follow.
The release date change is the second shift for a wide release film after Eon, MGM and Universal moved the 25th James Bond film from April to a release in November in order to counter the effect coronavirus is having on worldwide markets. Cinemas across China have remained closed for weeks, and Italy recently announced it would do the same.

The future is precarious for Peter Rabbit, as he realizes that happy families lead to babies — which means he could get thrown out on his fluffy little tail if his reputation as a furry troublemaker keeps up.
In the latest trailer for “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” released Wednesday, our bunny hero gets tired of being scolded for stealing tomatoes or causing mayhem in the garden and decides to take matters into his own paws by hitting the road.
So he takes his motley crew of animals to Shangri-La (a.k.a. the farmers market). “We’re going to rob this place, are you in or are you out?” he asks them. Of course, not all goes according to plan and when a few of the critter criminals end up behind bars, it is Peter’s job to rescue them.
