In 2001, she became the first star to place her handprints in the walk of fame outside her beloved Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.
She has two sons: John and Hugh
Her first professional engagement was at the age of seven and she went on to distinguish herself as a comedienne and as an outstanding actress in plays by O'Casey, Shaw, Sheridan and Beckett and is best remember for her 'Gaels of Laughter' shows. Trinity College Dublin honoured her with a doctorate and the City of Dublin bestowed its freedom on her.
She apparently regretted performing for Adolph Hitler during a tour of Germany in the 1930s.
Received an honorary doctorate degree from Trinity College University in Dublin.
She was one of Ireland's foremost stage actresses.
