A screening of “Apollo 13,” Ron Howard’s dramatization of the “successful failure” mission to the moon in 1970, doubled as a touching tribute to the film’s late composer, James Horner. The American Youth Symphony performed Horner’s entire score, live to picture, at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Saturday.
The composer died in a plane crash in 2015 at the age of 61 and never had a public memorial. This concert, which was followed by a dinner, served as a belated and fitting one, as well as a family reunion. His wife, daughter, 96-year-old mother and brothers were all there — as were members of his work family: longtime music editor Jim Henrikson, synth programmer Ian Underwood and mixer Simon Rhodes.
Sara Horner, accepting an award on her husband’s behalf, acknowledged the outsized role that the team played in his career.

Last night, two important precursors for specific technical categories gave out their awards, helping to potentially inform how two Oscar fields may end up turning out. The pair of groups are the Cinema Audio Society, which ties into Best Sound Mixing at the Academy Awards, while the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild obviously ties into Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars. Did these results clear up any races? Well, they gave us some frontrunners, but I don’t think anything is locked up. Not with how this year has gone, at least. That being said, these were the expected outcomes yesterday, so take that into consideration as well. The Cinema Audio Society (or Cas) top prize went to Bohemian Rhapsody, taking the category of Live Action Motion Picture. The animated winner was Isle of Dogs, while the Documentary victor was Free Solo. This sets up Bohemian Rhapsody to...

“Bohemian Rhapsody” (live action), “Free Solo” (documentary), and Wes Anderson’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs” (upsetting the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) were the top sound-mixing winners at Saturday’s 55th annual Cas Awards (at the InterContinental Hotel).
In terms of the Oscar race, the popular Freddie Mercury biopic, starring Best Actor favorite Rami Malek, strengthened its frontrunning status. The emotional Live Aid concert footage, in particular, benefits from the thunderous IMAX presentation.

I guess I could look at the win last night from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for The Descendants for Best Editing in a dramatic feature as a sign we may still have an upset at the Oscars, but I think that would be overstepping my bounds. I will, however, say I think it shows The Descendants is a stronger #2 candidate for Best Picture than Hugo is as The Artist remains the clear front-runner in the Best Picture category as it also won last night for Best Editing in a comedy or musical. In the lackluster animation category Rango took the win over Puss in Boots and The Adventures of Tintin where, I guess, we could have seen Tintin win, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any kind of passion one way or another to really care. The Ace winners are listed below along with the other nominees.

The sounding mixing team behind Martin Scorsese's Hugo took top honores at the 48th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, which took place Saturday night at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture went to Hugo's production mixer John Midgley, re-recording mixer Tom Fleischman and scoring mixer Simon Rhodes. Midgley, a first-time Cas winner, and Fleischman, who previously received a Cas Award in the category for The Aviator, are also nominated for an Academy Award for sound mixing. It also was a first Cas Award for Rhodes

2012 Oscar Predictions: Sound Mixing Contenders as the Cinema Audio Society Announces their Nominees
Two categories I have yet to predict in my Oscar predictions are Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, primarily because I've been waiting for the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) to weigh in with their nominees. Today, the Cas delivered and I'm expecting the results from the Mpse today or tomorrow as we are now only a few days away from the Oscar nominations. As for the Cas noms, over the last five years there has been a pretty good track record of the nominees matching Oscar's nominees. From 2006-2009 the nominees matched four out of the five Oscar nominees. Last year, however, was a bit different as only two of the five nominees matched. This year, I'm aiming for four of the five nominees to match once again as my only difference is I have Transformers: Dark of the Moon in my top five over Moneyball.

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film,...
