What Kevin Conroy was for Batman, Tim Daly was for Superman, who voiced the character in the ’90s Superman: The Animated Series. While the show itself isn’t as fondly remembered as Batman: The Animated Series, whose success paved the way for the show on the first hand, Daly did hit it out of the park with his performance as Clark Kent.
However, the acclaimed voice artist didn’t connect with Superman from the get-go, as it wasn’t until his later years that saw him developed a keen understanding of the character. But following the current landscape of superheroes, the Wings Star expressed his desire to get back to playing the Clark again, stressing the entertainment industry has gravitated way towards darkness.

In the world of superheroes and their adversaries, few characters stand as iconic as Superman and his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. However, Tim Daly, who voiced Kal-El in Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series has shared a special affinity for another DC supervillain, who is often described as an anti-hero and a dark reflection of the Kryptonian superhero, Bizarro.
Superman: The Animated Series
He has made recurring appearances in the DC Animated Universe and has been voiced by numerous actors over the years. Daly also gave his voice to the character in The Animated Series, which offered him an insight into the character. The 67-year-old actor expressed empathy towards the villain, as he fondly recalled his time portraying the complex character.
Tim Daly Shared His Experience Working With Bizarro
Introduced in Superboy #68, Bizarro has been frequently seen as an antagonist clashing with Superman and has taken on the role of an anti-hero as well.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Batman: The Animated Series were probably the best animated shows of the ’90s. While the former is a Marvel show, the latter is a part of the Dcau. Although it has been years since the last seasons of these shows aired, fans still go back to them from time to time.
Besides being one of the best animated shows out there, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was the first project to introduce the Spider-Man Multiverse which inspired numerous comics and other projects in the 21st century. On the other hand, Batman: The Animated Series was so good that it won several Daytime Emmy Awards and even a Primetime Emmy Award.
While there is no competition between the two because both have excelled in their own way, here are 3 reasons why each of the two shows is great.

Bruce Timm co-created Superman: The Animated Series, which ran for four seasons and remains the defining depiction of the Man of Steel for an entire generation. However, unlike most kids’ shows of the 90s, the series takes an interesting approach to storytelling, particularly when it comes to exploring Superman’s origin story.

Superman: The Animated Series explores the titular hero’s origin story over three episodes, which was surprising for an animated series in the 90s. However, Timm explained how the idea came to be because the creative team faced little to no pushback from the executives. As a result, Timm admitted that the series was able to explore the full scope of Superman’s origin story, and here is how.

Mark Hamill is one of the most popular actors of this generation, known for portraying the role of Luke Skywalker in the evergreen Star Wars franchise. Lex Luthor is one of the most celebrated villains of all time. Superman’s arch-nemesis is a genius, billionaire, and one of the most power-hungry characters in the comic-book world. The legendary character was portrayed to perfection by actor Clancy Brown in the Tim Daly starring animated show Superman: The Animated Series.
Bruce Timm’s follow-up to his Batman: The Animated Series was a Superman for a new generation as it became an influential piece of media for many other adaptations. It saw a much more vulnerable Superman, who did not smile or perpetually be optimistic like he was in the comics. However, Superman would have been completely different as Brown reportedly first auditioned for the role of Clark Kent in the show.

The Scarecrow, aka Dr. Jonathan Crane, is my favorite Batman villain. I've always been drawn to his eponymous motif, his horror-twinged stories, and how he contests Batman for the title "The Master of Fear." Hence, though "Batman: The Animated Series" holds a special place in my heart, I've always been disappointed that Scarecrow wasn't an A-list player.
Crane is the antagonist in only three episodes and in each one is mostly an obstacle for Batman to develop against. In his villainous debut, "Nothing to Fear," Batman is dosed with Scarecrow's Fear Toxin and haunted by an apparition of his father, leading to the Dark Knight's most famous line. In "Dreams in Darkness," the Fear Toxin drives Batman temporarily insane and he's locked in Arkham Asylum. He must escape both his physical and mental prison before Scarecrow can poison Gotham City.

Though we sadly lost Kevin Conroy in 2022, his legacy as the definitive Batman voice actor is well and truly established. Conroy was part of the reason Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski's "Batman: The Animated Series" was as influential as it was. But it wasn't just his input that gave the show its enduring appeal. Aside from reimagining Batman for a whole new generation in the '90s, "Batman: Tas" is noteworthy for introducing Mark Hamill's Joker.
Hamill was so good in the role he turned a quick cameo into a career playing the Clown Prince of Crime. And quite the career it's been. One reason that "Batman: The Animated Series" was and remains so beloved was how it embraced case-of-the-week storytelling. This was perfect for showcasing all the different corners and characters that make up the wild world of Gotham City. Such a large cast of characters meant that the series brought in a lot of actors; voice director Andrea Romano sought actors of all stripes for parts big and small. On the Popcorn & Shield podcast, the late Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) described the casting process as thus:
"They were really looking for actors, rather than just voice people. They cast a really wide net. So there were TV people, film people, stage people. Every week going in it was like going to summer camp, the people I got to work with."
Series co-creator Bruce Timm, also being interviewed, agreed with Conroy's sentiment. "Every week there was always some special, you know,...

Many saw Kevin Conroy as the definitive Batman. Before sadly passing in 2022, his gruff rasp as the Dark Knight came to represent the character for a whole generation of '90s kids. His work on "Batman: The Animated Series" was so widely loved that Conroy voiced the character in multiple other projects. Appearing as Batman in the "Arkham" and "Injustice" video games, the actor even showed up as live-action Bruce Wayne in "Crisis On Infinite Earths."

When a pair of "Tiny Toon Adventures" animators tried their hand at reinventing Batman for the small screen back in 1992, they created the definitive version of the Dark Knight for many a '90s kid. Led by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, "Batman: The Animated Series" was a big hit for Fox Kids for the three years of its airing. The show re-envisioned Batman for a new generation, picking up where Tim Burton left off with 1989's "Batman" and reintroducing the dark tone that had been so central to the character's inception.
With a Superman film in the works, Warner Bros. Animation president Jean MacCurdy asked Timm if he wanted to cartoons with the DC superhero (via Comicology). "Superman: The Animated Series" can sometimes live in the shadow of "Batman: The Animated Series," but that doesn't make it any lesser than the series it spawned from. In fact, many qualities that make the "Batman: Tas" great can be found in "Superman: Tas." One such thing is the incredible voice work: Just as the legendary Kevin Conroy became synonymous with the caped crusader, so did Tim Daly's performance as Superman. Moreover, Superman had his arch-enemy brought to life by a highly talented voice actor. Clancy Brown lent his distinctive baritone to Lex Luthor, the evil genius who opposes the morally righteous Superman.
However, before Clancy Brown took on the role of Lex Luthor, he initially had a different character in mind. As he would reveal in a 25th-anniversary piece published on the DC Comics website, Brown had actually wanted the role of Superman himself, Clark Kent. Unfortunately, the...

As the old saying goes, "It's a small world after all." You can travel halfway across the country and still find a former neighbor or someone that attended the same classes as you in college. You might even end up on the other side of the globe one day and run into an old friend that you haven't thought of in years.
Applying this saying to the entertainment industry, there are hundreds, if not thousands of productions going on at one time. Performers will audition for countless jobs, so the people in the waiting rooms start to look familiar after a while. But how often does it happen where you actually end up working with those you really know and are close with, without one party at least putting a good word in for the other?
One instance where this happened was during the casting of "Superman: The Animated Series.

Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman" was a hit the likes of which the world hadn't previously seen. In terms of cultural and advertising ubiquity, "Batman" even seemed to outstrip "Star Wars" in terms of its deep saturation. Burton's Gothic designs and Danny Elfman's Stravinsky-like score came to dictate a great deal of popular media that followed. Warren Beatty's 1990 film "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most notable, big-budget "Batman" clone, using a lot of the aesthetic cues from "Batman," but adding more bright colors. Elfman also scored that film. Batman would then return in June of 1992 with "Batman Returns," an even stranger, more Gothic, more Stravinsky-inspired aesthetic.
The following September, Warner Bros. would keep Burton's stylized universe alive with Eric Radomski's and Bruce Timm's "Batman: The Animated Series," a show quite different from the bubblegum kid entertainment immediately surrounding it. "Batman: The Animated Series," like the Burton films,...

Today the comics community is mourning Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman for a generation. Starting with "Batman: The Animated Series" in 1992, Conroy went on to perform as the Dark Knight in almost 60 projects, including 15 films, 15 animated series, and two dozen video games. He even appeared in live-action as Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover event. It's hard to overstate the legacy he has left for DC fans. Conroy's work wasn't just a voice on a few shows; he brought so much depth to the role of this complicated superhero.
Back in 2014, Conroy spoke to DC.com about his Bat-career and his approach to the character. He talked about how fans have been coming up to him, telling him how his work affected them growing up and how they were introducing their own children to it. "People talk about Batman on such an intimate, adult level,...

I never thought I would be saying this so soon, but revered voice actor Kevin Conroy has died at age 66. The man who so many looked up to as "Batman" for decades has left us, and the world feels a little dimmer without him. As the stories about working with him continue to flood in, the common throughline shows industry-wide respect for a wholeheartedly kind individual. It's never easy to watch people who have contributed to the entertainment you've grown up with pass on, but it's even harder when they're as treasured as Conroy was.
For over 30 years, Conroy had been the Caped Crusader's definitive voice, whether in the guise of Bruce Timm's "Batman: The Animated Series" or the "Arkham" video games. Among the sea of talented folks who have donned the cowl, Conroy struck this perfect balance, where the imposing stature of Batman is molded from the hidden melancholy of Bruce Wayne.

New York, NY – Actor Kevin Conroy, the most beloved voice of Batman in the animated history of the character, died Thursday at age 66 after a short battle with cancer.
A noted stage, film and television performer, Conroy rose to unparalleled voice acting fame as the title character of the landmark Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1996). He would establish never-to-be-broken records as the quintessential voice of Batman, bringing the super hero to animated life in nearly 60 different productions, including 15 films – highlighted by the acclaimed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm; 15 animated series, spanning nearly 400 episodes and more than 100 hours of television; as well as two dozen video games. Conroy was also featured as a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.

It's impossible to think of "Batman: The Animated Series" without thinking of Kevin Conroy. In fact, the legendary voice artist provided what many consider to be the definitive Dark Knight voice to all manner of Batman media throughout his career. From the "Batman: Arkham" and "Injustice" video games to live-action depictions in "Batwoman" and "Crisis Aftermath," Conroy embodied both Batman and Bruce Wayne.
But "The Animated Series" is where it all began for Conroy, who sadly passed away at the age of 66. The celebrated show introduced an entire generation to a much darker version of the Caped Crusader, who was still trying to shake off the camp of the 1960s Adam West series. There had been Tim Burton's "Batman" in 1989 and Frank Miller's seminal "The Dark Knight Returns" comic in '86, but the character hadn't yet established himself in the collective psyche as a truly "Dark Knight".

Kevin Conroy, the character actor who lent his voice to Batman in a series of animated shows, movies and videogames, has passed away at the age of 66. According to an official release, he lost a short battle with cancer.
A classically trained actor who graduated from Julliard (he was Robin Williams’ roommate) and made a name for himself on the stage, performing in productions of “Hamlet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Conroy turned to television in the 1980s. He had a regular role on daytime soaps “Another World” and “Search for Tomorrow” and had a recurring role on “Dynasty.” Before landing his role on “Batman: The Animated Series,” he showed up on shows like “Murphy Brown” and “Cheers” (his comedic chops were just as finely honed as his dramatic chops).

After the beautiful restoration of Batman: The Animated Series to Blu-ray, now in time for holiday gift-giving is the Blu-ray edition of Superman: The Complete Animated Series. When the DVD edition arrived in 2009, I wrote in part:
“All the love and attention lavished on the Dark Knight was poured into this show, which was brighter and shinier, the villains larger in scope and giving the animators a chance to bust loose. Superman works great in animation and after the lackluster efforts from Filmation, Hanna-Barbera, and Ruby-Spears, this one clearly shows the potential fulfilled.
“As usual, the voice casting is fairly top-notch with Tim Daly alternating nicely between Superman and Clark Kent, sparring playfully with Dana Delany’s Lois Lane. Clancy Brown is wonderfully malevolent as Luthor and his ever-present menace is well handled, matching the reboot version launched a decade earlier.”

“Batman Beyond” voice and casting director Andrea Romano is calling on fans of the animated series to let Warner Bros. know there is a demand for a revival because the team behind the program is more than ready to return with new episodes. The news comes as Warner Bros.’ streaming platform HBO Max is about to world premiere “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” which got greenlit by WarnerMedia after years of fan demand to let Snyder finish his original cut of the 2017 superhero tentpole. Romano sent the message to fans IGN Fan Fest’s “Batman Beyond” table read over the weekend.
“It will depend on the fans asking, and asking, and asking for it until [show owner] Warner Bros. would be foolish not to,” Romano said. “So they have to begin a campaign of sorts and just let Warner Bros. know that that’s what they want. Because we would like to make it,...

Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated series of all time, so it’s not surprising many fans are approaching Netflix’s live-action series with caution. The streaming giant confirmed in September 2018 it was developing a live-action “Avatar” series with original creators Dimartino and Konietzko, but the two showrunners exited the project in August 2020 over creative differences, further fueling fan skepticism of the series. During a virtual reunion for the original “Avatar” voice cast (via Uproxx), many participants questioned the live-action project.
“I just don’t know how you fulfill that any better than [the animated] show did,” said Dee Bradley Baker, who voiced Appa and Momo on the series. “I’m open to whatever they do with the live-action series, which I know nothing about, but it’s like, ‘Well, how do you do this better than the...

The team at Warner Animation were enjoying unrivaled success with their 1990s offerings from Animaniacs to Batman: The Animated Series. As a result, as they retired Bats after 65 award-winning episodes, they decided to roll the dice on something bolder. For a change, they were looking to the future and not the comics for inspiration. What if, they wondered, Bruce Wayne aged out of being Batman but the need for the Caped Crusader remained? Who would inherit the mantle of the bat?
As it turns out, they settled on a teen, Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), to cross paths with Wayne (Kevin Conroy). Where once he relied on Alfred or Oracle for guidance, now he would direct the actions of his unlikely successor in the series Batman Beyond.
Given the futuristic designs and strong storytelling, the audiences proved loyal to the new franchise and the show lasted 52 episodes, spawning fresh merchandising opportunities...

27 years ago today, Batman: The Animated Series launched on Fox Kids, beginning a run of 85 episodes that many still regard as one of the finest takes on the Dark Knight. Mark Hamill, who voiced the Joker on the series, and in many other adaptations, marked the occasion with a tribute to the animated show on his Twitter account, where he acknowledged the effect the part had on his career, which at the time combined Star Wars fame with steady theater work and character acting.
Hamill commented as so:
“I went to Broadway in search of challenging character roles, only to find one of the most rewarding & enduring of them all in this series. Without #BatmanTheAnimatedSeries, my career would have no punchline.”
The tweet has certainly prompted a strong response, coming at the same time as Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy, who’ll be returning to the character in the Arrowverse...

When you consider how the producers behind Batman: The Animated Series were once instructed by execs at WB to develop a show about a “teenage Batman,” you can only imagine how things could’ve turned out horribly in less capable hands. But since we had the likes of Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett and Glen Murakami at the helm, we got the gem that was Batman Beyond.
Long story short, this bold series took place fifty years after the events of the aforementioned Batman: Tas, and saw the young Terry McGinnis inherit the mantle of the Dark Knight – with an aged Bruce Wayne as his mentor, no less. Featuring the voice talents of Will Friedle and Kevin Conroy, a mostly all-new rogues gallery and a kick-ass heavy metal/electronica soundtrack, it’s no wonder this bad boy has lived on in the hearts of fans the world over.

The cyberpunk Batman Beyond gets a special Blu-ray re-release for its 20th birthday.
This year marks 20 years since Batman Beyond first showed up on television, and to celebrate, the cast of the beloved series revealed at Sdcc 2019 that the show is getting a Blu-ray remastered re-release. Bruce Timm, Andrea Romano, Best Batman Kevin Conroy, and Best Spider-Man Will Friedle made the announcement during the show's 20th-anniversary panel (via Polygon).
The limited-edition set includes all the original episodes; a chrome Batman Beyond Funko Pop for some reason; several new featurettes; lenticular art cards; and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, the most messed up hour and a half of kids television since those Hasbro monsters murdered Optimus. They also revealed that the show will be hitting the DC Universe streaming service shortly, though I believe that will be its second time on the platform.

San Diego Comic-Con is right around the corner, and I cannot wait to see what kind of awesomeness this year has to offer! I’ve been attending Comic-Con for years! I remember the days where fans could walk in and buy their tickets on the day they arrived. Times have certainly changed as geek culture has grown and exploded in popularity. When I was growing up, I would have never thought that the stuff I was into would actually be popular one day, but that has happened.
Anyway, I’m excited for Comic-Con this year! Some studios like Warner Bros., Legendary, and Sony have bowed out, but that doesn’t mean there’s not going to be a ton of stuff to do and see! The full schedule for Comic-Con has been released, so now is the time to start planning your Comic-Con adventure!

Check back for updates to the schedule. The TV lineup for the 50th Comic-Con is bursting at the seams and the San Diego Convention Center will be bustling with everything from the supernatural to superheroes.
Star Trek will be beaming into Hall H with a look at the cultural phenomenon created by Gene Roddenberry. In addition to CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery, Comic-Con attendees will be the first to hear about the highly anticipated new series Star Trek: Picard starring Sir Patrick Stewart as well as the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
This year, winter will be coming one last time as the confab will host HBO’s Game of Thrones. The series may be done, but the fandom is alive and well. Stars and creators will take the Hall H stage July 19 with Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham...

Despite a fair amount of beloved DC cartoons being released on Blu-ray, there remain some glaring omissions. Fortunately, Warner Bros. began crossing a few of their most iconic shows off the list last year when Batman: The Animated Series finally got the HD treatment. That said, one would think the likes of Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond won’t be far behind.
Although the Man of Steel’s adventures would be the next logical choice in a chronological sense, it appears as though fans of Terry McGinnis will get their wish granted first. The reason I’m saying that is because a “Batman Beyond 20th Anniversary” panel is being conducted at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 18 at 12:15 pm Pacific in the legendary Hall H. On hand will be producers Bruce Timm and Glen Murakami, casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano, director James Tucker, writers Bob Goodman and Stan Berkowitz,...

Winners of the 46th annual Annie Awards were revealed on Feb. 2, 2019 at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won all seven of its races including Best Studio Animated Feature. Its main Oscar rival for that award, ‘Incredibles 2,” took just 2 of its leading 11 bids. The Annies, which hand out awards in 32 categories, are presented by the Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Assn. Scroll down for the full list of winners (and complete roster of nominees).
