Tom Hiddleston gives a remarkable performance, with some fine singing, as country music legend Hank Williams but it is not enough to rescue I Saw The Light, which reduces the singer/songwriter’s skyrocket career and brief life into a grim slog, plodding towards his death at age 29.
Any doubts that Hiddleston, a classically trained British actor who perhaps is best known to American audiences as Loki in the Thor and Avengers movies, could play the country music legend are immediately dispelled at the start of the film. The problem is writer/director Marc Abraham’s script, coupled with uninspired direction.
Hank Williams was a pivotal figure in country music, who changed the genre and also laid the foundation for rock and roll. Like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams burst onto musical charts like a skyrocket, blazed brilliantly, then suddenly vanishing, but left a lasting legacy that changed the nature of country music.

Once set to have arrived in theaters last week, Sony Pictures Classics decided to move I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams biopic which finds Tom Hiddleston in the leading role, to 2016. Coming from longtime producer Marc Abraham (Children of Men, Dawn of the Dead), whose directorial debut was Flash of Genius, the film will now arrive in March and today brings the first trailer.
We said in our review, “The opening to Marc Abraham‘s I Saw the Light holds a lot of intrigue. Based on Colin Escott‘s biography about hillbilly legend Hank Williams, the start goes from a faux black and white newsreel interview with producer Fred Rose (Bradley Whitford) recounting how one-of-a-kind the singer was to a magically lit performance by Tom Hiddleston as Williams (the actor sings every note and the actors playing his band pluck every string). He’s sitting on a stool with a hazy spotlight pouring down,...

I Saw the Light may have been pushed back to March of 2016, but it didn’t change the premiere plans, or dampen anyone’s spirits. The premiere, which was on the 17th at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, saw writer/director Marc Abraham and the film’s cast enjoying the scene during the red carpet and an after party, which included music by Tom Hiddleston.
In attendance: writer/director Marc Abraham, Tom Hiddleston (“Hank Williams”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Audrey Williams”), Bradley Whitford (“Fred Rose”), Maddie Hasson (“Billie Jean Jones”), and Wrenn Schmidt(“Bobbi Jett”). Also joining them on the carpet was Hank Williams’ Daughter Jett Williams, Fred Parker Jr. (“Faron Young”) and the members of the film’s musical talent known as the ‘Drifting Cowboys,’ Josh Brady, Wes Langolis, Casey Bond, Michael Rinne.

Tinseltown took over Music City this past weekend, with the glitzy premiere of the highly anticipated Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light. Stars of the big-screen adaptation of the book, Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt and William Macewen, walked the red carpet (which, for the record, was actually green), as invited guests filled the twin theaters at Nashville's historic Belcourt theater. British actor Tom Hiddleston turns in a career-defining role as the troubled singer-songwriter, whose influence is seen not only in nearly every country artist who came after him,...

Toronto – We’re not going to beat around the bush here. Despite the worthy efforts of stars Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, the Hank Williams biopic “I Saw The Light” is a shockingly bad movie. It’s such a disappointment we’re not even sure where to begin. Well, perhaps a quick history lesson is in order first. Hank Williams (Tom Hiddleston) was a legendary Country music singer and songwriter who had 11 no. 1 singles on the Billboard Country and Western Charts during a career that lasted only six years. The Alabama native first hit the charts in 1947 and actually had one of his biggest hits, “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” following his untimely death in 1953. He was just 29-years-old. In the decades since his music has influenced icons such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Keith Richards, among others. Let's continue, shall we? He was married twice, first to Audrey Williams (Elizabeth Olsen...

Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys band come to life in the first official footage released from the upcoming biopic, I Saw the Light. British actor Tom Hiddleston steps into the shoes of the Alabama native in a brief scene from the film that depicts the singer and his band members in the studio recording what would be his first hit, "Move It on Over," at Nashville's Castle Studio in 1947. There's also a brief glimpse of Williams watching from a window as his then-wife, Audrey, played by Elizabeth Olsen, admonishes...

Will this upcoming awards season be the year of Tom Hiddleston? The popular Brit already has Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" on tap for October and, now, he's officially in the mix for his performance as the iconic Hank Williams in Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light." "Light" is based on Colin Escott's 1994 novel "Hank Williams: The Biography" and chronicles his rise to superstardom and tragic death at the age of 29. An autopsy revealed he died of a heart attack, but he was also a known alcoholic who had also developed addictions to morphine and other painkillers. Williams had 11 no. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart including two posthumously. The cast also includes Elizabeth Olsen as William's wife Audrey Mae and Bradley Whitford as Fred Rose (founder of the legendary Acruff-Rose Music which published Williams songs) as well as David Krumholtz, Cherry Jones, Wrenn Schmidt and Josh Pais.

Amid all the casting uncertainty around the Steve Jobs movie and the news of a Sock Monkey movie in the works, another biopic would like a little of your love and attention today. I Saw The Light, a biographic treatment of famed country star Hank Williams, already has Tom Hiddleston playing the famed country star and it now has Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones aboard, too, according to Screen Daily.Jones, best known for her Tony-winning work on Broadway and for winning an Emmy as President Taylor in seasons 7 and 8 of 24, will play Hank Williams' mother Lillie. Whitford, who recently reminisced about playing Josh Lyman in Empire's enormous West Wing reunion, takes on Nashville music publisher Fred Rose. Both characters were big characters and big influences on the young star-in-the-making. The latter helped Williams chart his rise from backup vocalist to superstar, and remained a good friend of the singer's.
