A candid Gina Yashere was quick to explain who made the decision to end Bob ❤ Abishola after only five seasons – it was CBS, she exclaimed. But she also admitted the budget cuts made her treat the show’s supporting characters with even more respect in its final year.
As part of the cost-cutting move to secure a renewal for the Warner Bros comedy, the sitcom’s supporting cast was offered to continue as recurring with a five-episode guarantee. Only stars Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku had their series-regular options exercised to remain on the multi-camera comedy full time.
The comedy from executive producers Yashere, Chuck Lorre, Al Higgins and Matt Ross will still produce 13 episodes in its final season.

Waitress composer Sara Bareilles and Pulitzer finalist playwright Sarah Ruhl are teaming up on a stage musical adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s bestselling 2013 novel The Interestings.
Bareilles is composing the music and lyrics, while Ruhl writes the book. Matt Ross is producing.
Wolitzer’s novel, as the official synopsis states, tells the story of six teenagers who meet at summer camp in the 1970s and form a lifelong bond over their shared dream of leading creative and inspiring lives. Decades later in New York City, that bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. The Interestings traces their lives as they grow together and apart to explore friendship, love, envy, class, art, money, and power; and how all of it can shift and tilt precipitously over the course of a friendship and a life.

“Bob Hearts Abishola” will conclude with its upcoming fifth season at CBS.
The fifth season of the multi-cam comedy is due to premiere on Feb. 12, with the series finale now set for May 13.
The ending of “Bob Hearts Abishola” marks the potential end of an era at CBS. With the show ending, coupled with the previously announced ending of “Young Sheldon,” Chuck Lorre does not currently have any shows slated to be on the CBS schedule going into next fall. Unless the network picks up a new show from Lorre and his team between now and then, it will be the first time Lorre has not had at least one show on CBS since 2003.
Lorre’s run at CBS has been nothing short of historic. In the past 20 years he has co-created and executive produced shows for the network including long-running hits like “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and Half Men,...

Are Chuck Lorre’s days on broadcast television coming to an end?
CBS on Wednesday announced that its Lorre-produced comedy Bob Hearts Abishola will end with its upcoming fifth season, with the series finale set for May 13.
The comedy starring Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku joins fellow Lorre-produced series Young Sheldon in coming to a close in 2024. With the conclusion of both shows next year, broadcast comedy kingpin Lorre will have gone from having a two-hour block of four shows on CBS to zero on broadcast. The brains behind broadcast hits including Two and a Half Men, Cybill and scores of others next has his Max comedy Bookie debuting this week and is readying another spinoff from Big Bang Theory for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform.
“Bob Hearts Abishola is about an unlikely love story, but also the premise that immigrants make America great,” said executive producers Gina Yashere,...

Sharpen your ax, order new business cards, and crank up some Huey Lewis and the News because the LA-based comic book publisher Sumerian is bringing an American Psycho comic book to shelves. According to Deadline, the four-issue series, publishing later this year, “will have a dual narrative, one showing a different perspective of Bateman’s killing spree (with a notable “twist”) and another revealing a modern-day arc with “surprising connections to the past.” The new arc is a sequel to the 2000 thriller from director Mary Harron.
Sumerian’s American Psycho comic book centers on “an all-new psychopath as social media obsessed millennial, Charlie (Charlene) Carruthers, goes on a downward spiral filled with violence. Drug fueled partying leads to bloodshed as Charlie leaves a trail of bodies on her way to discovering the truth about her dark nature.”

"Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir this show's blood." Hulu has decided to walk away from "Devil in the White City" -- the series adaptation of Erik Larson's 2003 non-fiction historical novel -- after developing it with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio for over two-and-a-half years. Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter all brought word of the new development at the same time. Their sources say that the show's producers, ABC Signature and Paramount Television Studios, are still committed to the project and will be shopping "Devil in the White City" around to other platforms, in the hopes of finding a new home. But as of now, the series is more or less dead.
According to THR, Jude Law ("Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore") and Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") were last in talks to star in "Devil in the White City," with Matt Ross...

An adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been in the works for over a decade. The most recent incarnation was set up at Hulu as a limited series, but after losing leading man Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 4) and director Todd Field (Tar) last year, it seems that the streaming service has scrapped The Devil in the White City.
The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.” THR’s report states that producers had been nearing deals with Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Dumbledore) to star in the...

Devil in the White City is officially dead at Hulu.
Sources say the Disney-backed streamer is no longer moving forward with the limited series that had been in various stages of development for more than a decade. However, sources say producers ABC Signature remains committed to the drama and will be shopping the show to new outlets.
The news comes months after leading man Keanu Reeves and director Todd Field (Tár) dropped out of the drama from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Sources say Hulu and Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s ABC Signature, who together were on board to produce the series, had been in talks with The Bear star Jeremy Allen White and Jude Law and director Matt Ross for the project. Even though the Razzies have already apologized for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong of “Firestarter” as “Worst Actress” and taken her out of the running for this year’s parody awards, former child star Drew Barrymore let them have it on her talk show Thursday, saying that it “made her blood boil.”
Barrymore played the title role in the 1984 adaptation of the Stephen King novel when she was 9 years old and, naturally, feels protective of the remake’s child lead.
“This makes my blood boil,” she said in a segment on “The Drew Barrymore Show.” Although Razzie co-founder John Wilson stated they won’t nominate anyone 18 or younger going forward, Barrymore added, “Please don’t do this to people who are younger. That’s not nice. And I really like Ryan and as [someone who also played the title character in] ‘Firestarter,’ don’t do this again.”

Exclusive: Abishola will be seeing more of her mom in the upcoming season of Bob ♥ Abishola. Saidah Arrika Ekulona, who heavily recurred as Ebunoluwa in seasons 2 and 3 of the CBS/Warner Bros. TV comedy, has been promoted to series regular for Season 4.
Ebunoluwa is Abishola’s (Folake Olowofoyeku) mother. She and Dottie (Christine Ebersole) have become fast friends over their heavy-handed parenting styles. When Abishola was growing up in Nigeria, her mother was a harsh authoritarian, more recently Abishola has come to see some holes in her mother’s thick armor. Though Abishola doesn’t usually see it, outsiders can see that from Ebunoluwa’s directness, to her parenting style, to the pride she takes in her children’s accomplishments, Abishola is absolutely her mother’s daughter.

“It was great!” exclaims director of photography Larkin Seiple, recalling the moment he discovered he was a first-time Emmy nominee for “Gaslit.” “I got a text from my agents and they just said, ‘Congrats,’ and I was confused because they didn’t say why. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ and they were like, ‘You got nominated!’ I checked the roster and five of my other friends had gotten nominated, which is pretty surreal. It was fun to share it with a bunch of other nominees as well. It was a trip!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Seiple is nominated for Best Cinematography for a Limited Series. “Gaslit” premiered on Starz on April 24 and shines its light most prominently on Martha Mitchell (played by Julia Roberts), a big personality and whistleblower who was the first to publicly expose President Richard Nixon’s involvement in Watergate. There are 136 submissions on the 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Directing, which will yield six nominations. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Queen’s Gambit” (Scott Frank), while the other nominees were “Hamilton” (Thomas Kail), “Mare of Easttown” (Craig Zobel), “Wandavision” (Matt Shakman), “The Underground Railroad” (Barry Jenkins) and two episodes of “I May Destroy You” (Sam Miller for “Eyes Eyes Eyes Eyes” and Miller and Michaela Coel for “Ego Death”).
For six of the last eight years, the Best Limited/Movie Directing category has rewarded directors who helmed the entirety of their limited series. That could work in favor of Mike White, who directed all six episodes of “The White Lotus,” which should have enough overall support to be competitive in the series category. Miniseries that also only submitted their sole director for the whole series, per the Emmy ruling, include “Gaslit” for Matt Ross,...

There’s something comfortably distancing about history. Grainy black and white footage can look impossibly foreign, and even once something’s in color, the more limited options older film stocks worked with to recreate real life have this kind of patina to them in comparison to digital color. It is easy for a modern audience to use the look of something as an emotional off-ramp — this thing looks different from how the world is now, so it doesn’t apply to us. But “Gaslit,” Starz’s look into the Watergate scandal (adapted from the first season of the “Slow Burn” podcast), doesn’t want to provide viewers with any escape from how the hubris, incompetence, and immorality of men in power ripple outwards. This extends to the show’s visuals, which restore immediacy to an event that’s now considered settled history.

As Emmy nominations voting comes to a close this Monday, UCP and Starz have found one more way to expose their limited series “Gaslit” to potential voters: Free, over-the-air broadcast TV.
The first episode of “Gaslit,” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, will air on NBC-owned TV stations in key markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, this weekend in a final push to expose the series to as many people as possible.
Universal Studio Group’s UCP produces “Gaslit” for Starz. And in a case of Comcast/NBCUniversal synergy, Usg and UCP have turned to their sister NBC broadcast station unit for help. As a result, the first episode of “Gaslit” will air on Knbc/Channel 4 in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 25, at 8 p.m. — in primetime.
In New York (Wnbc), Philadelphia (Wcau), Washington D.C. (Wrc), Boston (Wbts) and Philadelphia (Wcau), the NBC stations will air “Gaslit” at 7 p.

George MacKay (“1917”) is set to headline alongside Lea Seydoux (“Crimes of the Future”) in “The Beast,” a decade-spanning dystopian romance thriller directed by Bertrand Bonello (“Saint Laurent”).

Taking place between Paris and California, “The Beast” is set in the near future where emotions have become a threat. Seydoux stars as Gabrielle, a woman who has finally decided to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her past lives and rid her of any strong feelings. But when she meets Louis (Mackay), and feels a powerful connection to him as if she’d known him forever. Late French actor Gaspard Ulliel was previously attached to star in the film.

You know the story of the Watergate scandal, but you haven’t seen it told quite like this.
In Starz’s upcoming limited series Gaslit (premiering Sunday at 8/7c), the downfall of President Richard Nixon is explored from the perspective of his less-famous, but very power-hungry subordinates. But history, as we know, goes much deeper than that. Untold stories are unraveled, from the unhinged extremists who joined in to aid and abet the politicians’ crimes, to the whistleblowers who exposed the corruption and burned everything to the ground.

To celebrate the release of political thriller Gaslit, we spoke to some of the stars of the show.
Created by Matt Ross, Gaslit revolves around the players who were behind the infamous Watergate scandal. Following government officials such as John Dean and G. Gordon Liddy, the show the events leading up to and after the event. It also looks at Martha Mitchell, and her anti-war stance which went against Nixon and her husband John Mitchell.
We were delighted to speak with Dan Stevens about tackling the ambitions of his character and blasting Boris Johnson on The One Show, as well as working with Betty Gilpin who plays his wife Mo Dean.
We also spoke to the brilliant Shea Wigman about taking on the role of G. Gordon Liddy and how he layered this engrossing yet temperamental, stoic character.
Gaslit premieres on Starzplay on the 24th April.

The first problem for Starz’s new series “Gaslit” may be in its title.
Sure, to “gaslight,” as a verb, has its origins in the 1944 film (and its earlier stage source material), all about a woman whose husband, insistent on his falsehoods, leads her to question her sanity. But its contemporary usage, as a slang term with a meaning that has drifted closer to simply “lying,” might not be how a woman in the 1970s would understand a case of marital dishonesty.
Which is not to say that Martha Mitchell, the character Julia Roberts plays here, doesn’t have a keen understanding of just what she’s up against. Martha, the real-life wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general John Mitchell, is depicted by Roberts as at once puckishly witty and as not immune to dramatizing her already dramatic circumstances. “Gaslit,” which takes a broad view of the political players...

Roberts is on fire in the trailer, Arkansas accent and all, as a political storm swirls around her, and Penn is nearly unrecognizable in his prosthetics and hair pieces. At one point, John slaps Martha across the face, to which she responds by slapping him back, adding, “My momma slapped me harder than that.”
Martha was the first person to publicly blow the whistle on Nixon’s involvement in the infamous scandal, which kicked off an avalanche of political and personal consequences. John was Nixon’s close advisor and friend,...

And the award goes to...
Let's prep for a very exciting awards season with Starz's Gaslit looking to be quite the thrill ride with a cast that makes your hair stand on end.
Sean Penn may be in Ukraine filming the atrocities occurring there, but you'll soon see him supporting leading lady Julia Roberts as the two play married couple, John and Martha Mitchell, and it looks like they'll knock it out of the park!
The series is a modern take on Watergate, focusing on the scandal's untold stories and forgotten characters -- from Nixon's bumbling and opportunistic subordinates to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes to the tragic whistleblowers.
They would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.
The story will center on Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts, a big personality with an even bigger mouth. Martha is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon's loyal Attorney General,...
