Costume designers are stepping up their decades-long fight for pay equity and gender equity.
On Thursday, Hollywood costume designers launched Pay Equity Now, a movement designed to spotlight longstanding pay discrepancies. Emmy award-winner Ariyela Wald-Cohain (“Waitress”) explains, “Costume design has historically been viewed as ‘women’s work’ and due to the lack of understanding of our job, there has been a lack of respect for our craft.”
With IATSE Basic Agreement negotiations set to start in March, the guild is pushing forward with a call to action. Among the four-step plan, costume designers should ask their agents to demand the same pay as department heads such as production designers or directors of cinematography, and to share their salaries and terms of their contracts with costume designers who are working for the same studios.

“Elvis” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 27. It prevailed over two of its Oscar rivals, “Babylon” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” plus “Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Woman King.”
In a sign of its strength, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Those films round out the Oscar race for Best Costume Design. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
In its 24-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy...

“Elvis” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once” were the film winners at the 2023 Costume Designers Guild Awards.
Shirley Kurata’s win comes as “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has garnered momentum heading into the final phase of Oscar voting which begins on March 2. Kurata bested titans in the field going up against Deborah L. Scott (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), history-making Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther) and Mayes C. Rubeo (“Thor: Love and Thunder”).
Catherine Martin won for her work on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Building over 90 looks alone for Austin Butler, Martin, a triple-nominee for production design and best picture remains a favorite.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “Wednesday” and “House of the Dragon” were among the other winners.
Ruth E. Carter presented Angela Bassett with the guild’s spotlight award and reflected on their collaboration. During her speech, Bassett said, “Costume designers are the ultimate partners in filmmaking.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2023 Oscars reaped bids on January 12 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Babylon,””Elvis,” and “The Woman King” contend here in the period picture category against “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” which rank seventh and 21st in our Oscar odds respectively.
The Oscar frontrunner, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “The Fabelmans,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains discussions about some scenes and storylines in “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
In “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie is now King Valkyrie of New Asgard. However, she has not found her queen. “You know, she’s flirty,” Thompson tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.” She’s out in the world. She’s ready for love. She’s definitely single and ready to mingle, but also I think, when the time is right.”
Not that Thompson, who came out as bisexual four years ago, thinks romance is a necessity to show Valkyrie’s queerness. “I think a part of really being able to normalize queer characters, Lbgtqia characters, is to allow them to exist in their humanity and that doesn’t always mean that they’re in love or in a partnership because plenty of us know that sometimes you’re not.

“King Richard” costume designer and Lifetime Achievement recipient Sharen Davis was among the many attendees at the Wednesday’s Costume Designer Guild Awards calling for Pay Equity Now. Davis said, “I’ve worked sick. I’ve worked with a broken leg, I even worked after being hit by a car. There is no understudy for costume design. We are critical to incredible filmmaking. Let’s make this year the year that we get paid equity.”
The topic is not new with the guild. For years, costume designers have been fighting for pay equity and the sentiment of feeling undervalued has existed. Not only are they the last people off set, they are also there first thing in the morning, designers argue.
Costume designers are 85% women, yet are paid less than production designers, which are 85% men.

Earning recognition for hard work feels good and earning it from your peers in your chosen career path is even more special. Streaming at home means audiences can pause scenes for instant screen grabs and examine everything in copious detail. It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.

At the onset of Disney+’s WandaVision, Mayes C. Rubeo found herself a little bit out of her comfort zone. “I had never done television before,” admits the costume designer, who was Emmy-nominated for her first venture. Rubeo had worked on massive productions — she designed costumes for Apocalypto, Avatar and World War Z and had entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Ragnarok. (Jojo Rabbit, her second collaboration with Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, earned her an Oscar nomination.)
But Rubeo shares that working in the episodic medium felt familiar, particularly because of WandaVision‘s large scale and scope. “This one was a mind-twister,...

“WandaVision” just reaped a whopping 23 Emmy nominations. The limited series, which debuted in January, was the first Marvel show on Disney’s new streaming service. But it has a different style and tone from previous MCU projects. The mashup of superheroes and sitcoms became one of the most talked about TV events of the year. Scroll down to watch our nine exclusive video interviews with Emmy nominees from the limited series.
The story focuses on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) after witnessing the murder of her love Vision (Paul Bettany) during “Avengers: Infinity War.” Despite Vision’s demise, “WandaVision” begins with the pair living in wedded bliss in a black-and-white sitcom set. Viewers quickly learn that this strange reality is somehow tied to Wanda’s untapped magical powers, as each episode plops the pair into a new sitcom decade. The design elements, cinematography, and acting styles change with the times. The...

As Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) played out a family fantasy across multiple decades of sitcom television in Disney Plus’ “WandaVision,” veteran costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo had to dress her for the part. But while she played with color and texture to represent fashion trends of gone by, she also had to create present-day, real-world looks for those trying to get down to the bottom of what was going on with Wanda, as well as offer a new take on the iconic Scarlet Witch costume.
What rules did Marvel set about what could or could not be changed from previous iterations of the Scarlet Witch costume for your design?
This costume was made in collaboration with the great artist Andy Park. Every designer that works on a new Marvel project tries to bring something else to the character, and we wanted a more mature, more weathered Wanda Maximoff. She has...

“I’m a visual person, so all of these costumes and designs got into my head,” reveals Oscar-nominated costume designer Mayes C. “WandaVision” is Marvel’s first foray into limited series storytelling on the Disney+ streaming platform, created by screenwriter Jac Schaeffer, with all nine of its episodes directed by Emmy nominee Matt Shakman (“The Great”). It stars Elizabeth Olsen, reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. The fire marshal shut down the “Parasite” party at Soho House before the Oscars were even over.
At about 8 p.m., guests arriving to the viewing and after party were asked to give their phone numbers to staff at the door and suggested they grab a bite to eat at Boa restaurant — they would receive texts when more could be let into the party.
Inside, Neon had taken over the private members club. Fake peaches were hung in trees in the garden restaurant. A handful of people turned the peaches into earrings. A large neon “Bong” sign was glowing in the downstairs restaurant. The menu for the evening included Soho House’s usual offerings of salads, salmon and beef, but also Bibigo Kitchen provided Korean dishes, featuring fried chicken, rice rolls, cucumber kimchi and bulgogi and corn cheese egg rolls.

“Little Women” will win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. If we’re right, it will be the second win for designer Jacqueline Durran, whose last victory was also for dressing up a literary classic: Joe Wright‘s 2012 take on “Anna Karenina.”

Durran has been nominated seven times overall in the last 15 years. In addition to “Karenina” and “Little Women,” she contended for “Pride and Prejudice” (2005), “Atonement” (2007), “Mr. Turner” (2014), “Beauty and the Beast” (2017) and “Darkest Hour” (also 2017). This year she gets leading odds of 82/25 with support from 22 out of the 29 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets as of this writing.
This is despite the fact that Durran wasn’t even nominated for “Little Women” by the Costume Designers Guild, but perhaps not enough members of that...

On Jojo Rabbit, costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo’s task was to go against the grain. Dodging the drab aesthetics expected of a World War II film, she instead pursued a visual palette that was as poetic as it was realistic.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the drama centers on Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), an avid member of the Hitler Youth, who is furious when he discovers that his mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in the attic. Joined everywhere he goes by his imaginary friend Adolf (Waititi), Jojo strikes up a surprising friendship with the girl, which leads him to question his hateful worldview.
First working with Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok, Rubeo responded immediately to the unique story the director was telling, beginning her work on Jojo by delving deep into period research. “We looked at many things—the world of Berlin in that era. We looked...

Last night, the Costume Designers Guild had their say in the Oscar race. The 22nd annual Cdg Awards were held and with only two of the five Academy Award nominees in the running here, all eyes were on this group to see if that might tell us anything. Well, that might just have happened, but not necessarily in the way that we were expecting. Did the race zig instead of zag? Read on for more to find out… The complete Costume Designers Guild Awards results are next, but the notable outcome (or at least the most notable outcome) was that in Excellence in Period Film, Jojo Rabbit and costumer designer Mayes C. Rubeo pulled an upset over presumed frontrunner Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and costume designer Arianne Phillips. Could the Academy follow suit in February? Quite possibly. “Jojo Rabbit” was the surprise period film winner Tuesday night at the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The other Oscar nominees (also period pieces) are “The Irishman,” “The Joker,” “Little Women,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” But only “Once Upon a Time” was in contention at the Cdga.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was quick to point out on Jan. 13 as the Oscar nominations were announced, that “A record 62 women were nominated, almost one-third of this year’s nominees.” Twenty of those below-the-line nominations were for women and minorities, including Sandy Powell, who secured her 15th nomination for “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit” costume designer Mayes C. Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, World War I thriller, “1917,” and Todd Phillips’ $1 billion blockbuster, “Joker,” dominated the Oscar craft nominations on Monday, grabbing seven apiece.

To deliver the “anti-hate satire” of “Jojo Rabbit,” the story of a German boy who idolizes his own particular vision of Hitler before slowly learning the truth, director Taika Waititi followed a simple philosophy when it came to assembling his crew: “I like working with nice people.”
Most of the members had previously collaborated with Waititi. For instance, costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who recently made the Costume Designers Guild Assn. shortlist for her work on the film, also joined Waititi on “Thor: Ragnarok.” “She has such style and class,” says the director. “And she’s got a great eye.” Waititi says Rubeo traveled Europe to acquire the vintage textiles that brought the film’s costumes together. “She would haggle,” he jokes.

With less than eight weeks to go before the Academy Awards, it’s a scramble to the finish line for the artisans who create the looks, sounds and visual effects of this year’s awards contenders.
This year, these craftspeople used visual-effects technology in surprising ways. VFX artists turned back time for Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino in “The Irishman,” de-aging them in post-production. In Disney’s “The Lion King,” the visual-effects team used gaming technology to create an entirely virtual production.
But low-tech solutions to problems were used by production designers for “Little Women,” “The Irishman,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” as they turned 21st-century locations into Gotham City, 19th-century Massachusetts, mid-century Philadelphia and 1969 Hollywood using facades, and other practical dressings.
Some storylines to follow: Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who won last year for “Black Panther,” has a shot at another Oscar...

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Dolemite is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Rocketman” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. While our fifth contender — “Little Women” — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that the Cdg awards often overlook one of the eventual Academy Awards nominees.
The winner of a Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars as was the case last year with “Black Panther.” But in 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars. And in 2017, the academy went with the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which had lost at the guild to the Oscar-snubbed “Doctor Strange.”
The 22nd edition of these kudos, which also honor costume design in television and commercials, will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan.

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed nominees for its 22nd CDGAs, which celebrate excellence in film, TV, and short form costume design. Winners will be announced at a ceremony January 28 at the Beverly Hilton to be hosted by Mindy Kaling.
The guild previously announced that this year’s Cdga honorees include Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan, (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).
This year marks the first under new rules on the TV side in which designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.
Last year, Black Panther‘s Ruth E. Carter, Crazy Rich Asians’ Mary E. Vogt and Sandy Powell for The Favourite were among the film winners. Carter went on to take the honor at the Oscars.
Here’s the list of this year’s nominees:
