Captain America: Brave New World's pre-sales received an update that shows how the movie compares to other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries. After Chris Evans led the McU's Captain America trilogy, Anthony Mackie now gets the chance to start one of his own. Sam Wilson's first Captain America film will be the first of three MCU movies to be released in 2025. After 2024 saw Deadpool & Wolverine pass the coveted $1 billion mark at the box office, all eyes are on whether Marvel's upcoming movies will see similar success, and tickets are now out for Captain America: Brave New World.
On Twitter, box office analyst Luiz Fernando revealed that Captain America: Brave New World's pre-sales are nowhere near Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's numbers.
And yeah, #CaptainAmerica: #BraveNewWorld had its pre-sales kickoff on Fri at US #BoxOffice! After 2 days of pre-sales, although nowhere near #Quantumania which opened on the same weekend...

Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in a darkly comic reimagining of 1997’s Anaconda.
The new, blacky comic and somewhat meta-sounding Anaconda reboot is currently filming in Queensland, Australia, and from the production comes a new bit of casting. Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn, Ione Skye and Selton Mello have all been added to the line-up, which is already headlined by Jack Black and Paul Rudd.
The new Anaconda is being directed by Tom Gormican, who previously made The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent – an action comedy that doubled as a knowing retrospective on its star Nicolas Cage and his acting career. Judging by the story details from the production so far, Gormican’s Anaconda (stop chortling at the back) has a similar post-modern edge.
As revealed last October, the new take is about a pair of filmmakers (Black and Rudd) who set off to...

Presence is an upcoming supernatural horror thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh from a screenplay by David Koepp. The upcoming film revolves around a family who move into a suburban neighborhood and soon believe their house is haunted. While the plot for Presence sounds like a typical horror film, the ultimate twist, aka hook for the upcoming Soderbergh film, is that the film is shot from the ghost’s perspective.

Thandiwe Newton, who starred in HBO’s acclaimed Westworld, and Silo actor Steve Zahn have been swallowed up by Anaconda, Columbia’s comedic reimagining of the 1997 horror movie that launched a mini-franchise.
Selton Mello, who appears in Brazilian awards season hopeful I’m Still Here, and Ione Sky have also joined the feature that stars by Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Mello will be making his English-language debut with the action comedy.
Tom Gormican, who directed the Nicolas Cage meta movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, is co-writing with collaborator Kevin Etten and will direct the feature.

Sony Pictures Classics has announced that it will release its dramedy The Penguin Lessons, starring Academy Award nominees Steve Coogan (Philomena) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), in theaters nationwide on March 28.
The film is set to open against Focus Features’ Sundance entry The Ballad of Wallis Island, starring Carey Mulligan; Universal’s horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd; and Amazon MGM’s Jason Statham action thriller A Working Man, among other titles.
Based on Tom Michell’s 2016 memoir of the same name, The Penguin Lessons is inspired by the true story of a disillusioned Englishman who went to work in a school in Argentina in 1976. Expecting an easy ride, Tom (Coogan) discovers a divided nation and a class of unteachable students. However, after he rescues a penguin from an oil-slicked beach, his life is turned upside-down.

2025 is shaping up to be a massive year for moviegoers. Numerous beloved franchises will be making their triumphant return this year, with 2025 movie sequels with massive budgets coming for Avatar, Jurassic World, Tron, and many more. In addition, many popular films are receiving their first sequels in 2025, including blockbuster musicals like Wicked and horror hits like M3GAN and The Black Phone. Plus, one should definitely not forget about the new films based on pre-existing properties, like Mickey 17 (based on a novel) and A Minecraft Movie (based on the popular video game). It's inevitable that many of these movies will dominate the box office in 2025.
Although many people are excited about these upcoming films, there are also plenty of people who are understandably quite tired of theaters being dominated by sequels and reboots. Fortunately, there are also many movies with big stars coming in 2025 that feature fully original ideas. These...

Countless ink has been spilled and millions of feet have been shot about living in Los Angeles, and how it feels like you’re always on the precipice of apocalypse. With what we’ve seen and lived through, this past week that feeling was all too real.
Almost everyone in LA knows someone who’s lost everything in the wildfires that cut through the Pacific Palisades, Altadena and elsewhere. Its heartening to see Angelenos come together to help each other through volunteering, mutual aid and donations, and heartbreaking to see the GoFundMe pages that have been created for family after family. Our hearts are with everyone who has been affected by the wildfires in LA and beyond.

No matter what mood, situation, or place you’re in, comedy movies can never be a bad idea, because everyone likes to have a good laugh. But sadly, people often confuse comedy films with loudmouthed slapstick humor that is known to dominate the screen. And perhaps this is why the genre of comedy is gradually fading away into oblivion.
With more people looking for drama and action films, comedy is getting sidelined in the world of entertainment. So before the classic sense of humor wanes completely, let’s take a look at 15 underrated comedies including—endearing rom-com, wry dramedy, action-comedy, and more—that’s worth every bit of your attention.

The debate about what constitutes The Great American Novel is never-ending, yet F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" always finds its way into this conversation. It might be tempting to simply reduce the author's work to an enduring portrayal of the Roaring Twenties, but Fitzgerald's book also cuts through the illusions while sustaining the enthralling mystery surrounding its titular figure. Once the mist dissipates, and both Jay Gatsby and his (only) friend Nick Carraway are laid bare for who they are, what remains is a profound sense of emptiness. Don't get me wrong: "The Great Gatsby" is a story about the inherent hollowness of spectacle, obscene wealth, and relationships of convenience that have the illusion of depth. However, once we confront the rare flashes of moving sincerity in a tale so luridly tragic, the empty lure of the green light at the heart of the novel takes on a terribly haunting sheen.

In recent months, the Spider-Man 4 rumours have gone from being fun and exciting to verging on exhausting. Villain after villain has been rumoured to appear in the movie and, as things stand, we're no closer to knowing who Peter Parker will battle.
What's become apparent is that there won't be room in this project for all of them. Spider-Man 4 is already in the somewhat awkward position of coming out between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, as Tom Holland will star in all three movies (meaning his next solo outing will surely be affected by them).
In this feature, we recap each of the characters rumoured to be in the movie, and what their involvement could mean for each respective version of filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man 4. We also attempt to figure out what's really going on.

Judy Greer's original idea for her MCU character's return in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would have made the polarizing Phase 5 movie so much better. Peyton Reed's third Ant-Man movie hit theaters in February 2023 and was immediately met with criticism, mostly because of its huge world-changing scale, which was far removed from the grounded and intimate nature of 2015's Ant-Man and 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp. It's not just the audience who wanted something else from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, either, as an Ant-Man franchise actor has also revealed her original vision.
Instead of focusing on a small-scale story, such as the battle against Darren Cross' Yellowjacket or the confrontation with Ghost, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and his size-changing family face-to-face with the McU's biggest new threat. Kang the Conqueror's inclusion in Quantumania was then considered the strongest part of the movie,...

From ‘Superbad’ to ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ these Apatow hits still hold up.
One of the big reasons I wanted to get into writing movies is because of Judd Apatow. His comedies are more than just funny – they’re heartfelt and genuine, with imperfect characters doing their best to get on with it. He helped popularize the “antihero” protagonist (Seth Rogan is a good example). Someone who’s not the brightest, not the most attractive, but their heart is in the right place… and they sure are funny. The prolific writer, producer, and director has a ton of hit movies to his name, but I want to give you my favorites. Here are the top 7 Judd Apatow comedies you can stream right now

Ever since Ant-Man (2015), the superhero has grown exponentially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pun intended. Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang proves that sometimes, big things come in small packages and that size does matter, after all. With three solo films to his name, it didn’t take long for Ant-Man to become one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. Of course, Paul Rudd’s undeniable charm helped a ton, too. However, the Ant-Man we know now is far different from what it could have been.

How funny is 2025 going to be?
Last year wasn’t great for comedies, with movies like The Fall Guy and If failing at the box office. Could 2025 be a rebound? It’s possible, which inspired me to put together a list of the 10 comedies I’m most intrigued to see this year. Some are much-awaited sequels to beloved movies. Others are daring swings by acclaimed indie directors. And one of them features Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd at odds. Clearly, there’s something for everyone in 2025.
I organized my picks by release date, putting movies that don’t yet have a fixed spot on the calendar at the end in alphabetical order. But, as always, it’s a roll of the dice when you’re putting together a guide like this. I haven’t seen any of these movies, so I’m really just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

World War II dramas, which often portray dramatized versions of real stories, are some of the most popular movies available on streaming services, Netflix has no shortage of great ones. War dramas are a very popular genre as a whole as they are often both entertaining and educational. Additionally, the genre benefits from the variety available, as it is possible to take an action route or a more emotional, character-driven route, leading to some of the best war movies of all time being vastly different.
While World War II documentaries and television series abound, there is room for great stories to be told even in the most horrifying backdrops. The World War II dramas available on Netflix cover satirical takes on real people and events, heart-wrenching tragedies, and stories of a singular person's heroism, meaning there is something that every audience member can watch.

After appearing in the first two Ant-Man films, Maggie Lang actress Judy Greer wanted to be a part of the trilogy's third installment, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania brought back a lot of the franchise's core characters such as Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne, but also introduced some new characters such as Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror (who was later fired after being found guilty of assault).
However, the film did not bring back one of the Lang family's most important characters - Scott's wife and Cassie's mother, Maggie Lang.

Jack Nicholson may still be a household name, but his public appearances are becoming more and more rare. Now less of an on-the-town movie star and more of a “I’d rather sit under a tree and read a book than act” retiree, it’s been two years since he has been photographed — a streak broken this week thanks to an Instagram post from his daughter.
Sharing photos from this past holiday season, Lorraine Nicholson included a shot of her and her 87-year-old father, who appears a bit more clean-cut than he was when he was last seen in public at a Lakers game in 2023.
In the background, you can see what is presumably a portion of the elder Nicholson’s library, with shelves of books, several black-and-white portraits, and, of course, a number of prestigious Hollywood awards on the top shelf.

A rare new photo of Jack Nicholson has been posted on social media.
The 87-year-old actor’s daughter, Lorraine, released the image (below) as part of a series of holiday snaps. The image shows Lorraine embracing the three-time Oscar winner in what appears to be a library or office, with some of the actor’s awards lining a bookcase shelf behind him. She captioned the post, “The giving season.”
This reportedly marks the first public image of the three-time Oscar winner in nearly two years.

The Tom Hanks-narrated NBC natural history epic The Americas is coming to the BBC.
The show is made by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio but, unlike many natural history epics, was not initially greenlit by the British broadcaster.
With music from Hans Zimmer, The Americas showcases the wonders, secrets, and fragilities of a supercontinent, using cutting-edge technology to uncover new behaviour and highlight stories. Five years in the making, and filmed over 180 expeditions, it heads to The Atlantic Coast, Mexico, Wild West, The Amazon, The Frozen North, The Gulf Coast, The Andes, The Caribbean, The West Coast and Patagonia.
The Americas is one of a number of recent natural history epics to draw A-list talent, with the likes of Paul Rudd and Benedict Cumberbatch also getting in on the act of late. Execs behind the show have previously said they were...

Today, Steve Carell is known as the connoisseur of the comedy genre. Sure, he has a few dramatic roles to his name but his comedic timing is what sets him apart from the crowd. There’s no one who isn’t a fan of the guy! Whether he is playing an out-of-touch regional manager or a former supervillain on the road to redemption, Steve Carell knows how to nail every role thrown his way and we can’t help but admire him for it.

Death of a Unicorn is an upcoming A24 horror comedy and there have been some exciting updates about the film. Joining the increasingly unmatchable stable of A24 horror movies like Hereditary, The Witch, and Pearl, while also dabbling in A24 style comedy like Zola, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Disaster Artist, Death of a Unicorn looks to bridge two genres the studio excels at. Unrelated to Peter Dickinson's 1984 novel of the same name, Death of a Unicorn is shaping up to be a hit for horror and comedy fans.
Since 2023, news has been slowly rolling out about the movie with the unusual and exciting name. So far, it looks like A24 may have once again produced something wildly unique and enjoyable with some of the biggest stars working. Despite the interest in the film, and A24's trailer, which suggests the movie is far along in post-production,...

Dinner for Schmucks holds a rare distinction that it shares with Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit and the Dceu’s Justice League film. These films are just a handful of examples of the rarity in the film industry. What sets these films apart from the majority of Hollywood offerings is that these films feature songs from The Beatles.

This year, for the first time in a while, a movie gave me the boost of serotonin that only hits my brain when I’m watching a great rom-com. It happened near the end of the Netflix film Hit Man, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. Powell plays Gary Johnson, a college professor moonlighting as a fake hit man to help cops catch people who are trying to hire a contract killer. At this point, Gary has fallen in love with Arjona’s Madison, whom...

The MCU has seen the Avengers start from a group of six to several dozen when they all fought together one last time in Avengers: Endgame. They became a diverse group of heroes, ranging from talking trees to literal gods, with varying ages and levels of power. The MCU timeline has seen it all, but there are some heroes that have experienced more than others. Despite all their differences, they were able to come together to defeat the greatest evil the universe had ever seen.
No matter what type of powers they may or may not have, the Avengers gave their all to defend Earth, losing some members along the way. Still, there are some that continued to fight despite their age, not letting that slow them down when it comes to avenging the world. Here are the ten oldest Avengers in the MCU.

Jack Nicholson disappeared from Hollywood after what was an anticlimactic end to one of the greatest film careers of all time with 2010's "How Do You Know?" The movie saw Nicholson play the head of a big firm for which Paul Rudd's George works. If that doesn't sound like the best use of a screen legend, it wasn't. "How Do You Know?" ended up being a star-studded box office flop, with reviewers chastising writer/director James L. Brooks for wasting such impressive talent.
"How Do You Know?" starred Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson but surely the biggest waste was Nicholson himself, especially considering he ended his venerable on-screen career with this movie. By this point, Nicholson didn't need to do anything. In fact, he hadn't needed to do anything since he signed a bonkers deal with Warner Bros. for starring as the Joker in 1989's "Batman" and...

Saturday Night Live spoiled its audience with a cameo-packed episode hosted by Martin Short to close out 2024. But if it wasn't for time restrictions, another big-name cameo would have been added to the list.
The cold open kicked things off by officially inducting Short into the Five Timers Club. Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Paul Rudd, John Mulaney, Emma Stone, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, and Jimmy Fallon all showed up to start the show. Lorne Michaels and Dana Carvey also popped up later in the episode.
A cut-for-time sketch prevented actress Lucy Liu from officially making a cameo during the episode. But thankfully, Saturday Night Live added the sketch online for all to enjoy.
Martin Short stars as the Grinch in the Dr. Seuss parody. The scene stars pretty slow and is more impressive for the production value than any of the comedy.

The classic 1990s monster movie Anaconda is returning with a new remake, but this time it is envisioned as a meta comedy. The 1997 original starred Jennifer Lopez as a documentary filmmaker who travels deep into the jungles of South America in search of a lost tribe of indigenous people who live there. Unfortunately, the crew gets more than they bargained for when they encounter a dangerous criminal (played by Jon Voight) and a massive man-eating snake. Though cheesy and critically panned, Anaconda certainly has its place in the poorly-defined horror landscape of the 1990s.
Now, after a ton of sequels to Anaconda, the Jennifer Lopez vehicle is set to be remade by Hollywood but in a way that is totally unexpected. This new take on the blockbuster will reframe it as a comedy, though maintain the same basic story structure as the original. This meta approach to the cult classic...

Long-running TV shows can be a blessing and a curse. The blessing part is obvious enough — if a show has run long enough to get past the old marker of syndication (100 episodes), then it must be popular. The longer a show runs, no matter its genre, the more its popularity must be pretty solid. Consider that procedurals like "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Grey's Anatomy" have been on the air for literally more than two decades.
But the longer a show runs, the more it can cost to produce (the actors on those shows understand all too well how popular they are and want to be compensated to match). And for guest stars who arrive later in a show's run, they can find that the atmosphere is a bit closed off to newcomers, whether or not the guest is there for one episode or a handful. One such...

This weekend, "Saturday Night Live" welcomed Martin Short as the 27th member of its storied Five-Timers Club: guest hosts who have helmed the show at least five times. The concept was first introduced to the series by Tom Hanks all the way back in 1990 and has become a recurring opening sketch since. Hanks himself (who has hosted the show 10 times to date) returned to introduce Short's ceremony, but he was far from the only celebrity on set. In fact, this was the largest collection of Fiver-Timers Club members yet.
Other guests that dropped in: Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone, Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johansson, John Mulaney, and Alec Baldwin. It's not easy to get this many stars in one place, so perhaps they were all back in New York for the holidays anyway.

Top that, SNL 50th Anniversary Party.
Martin Short was inducted into Saturday Night Live’s Five-Timers Club last night, welcomed by a dazzling array of members of the SNL royal family. The fact that the party replaced the tiresome political cold open just made it all the sweeter. Call the sketch a victory lap for Lorne Michaels. Is there any other TV show, comedy or not, that could gather a group like this?
First up, Tom Hanks, lounging in a leather chair like he was going to narrate another World War II documentary.
Hanks shared a piece of SNL history — he was the one who invented the idea of a “Five-Timers Club,” mainly as an “ingeniously lazy” way to avoid writing a host monologue that week. True story!
Paul Rudd joined Hank to welcome in Short, who previously played the Five-Timers Club cabana boy when Justin Timberlake was inducted. It’s quite a promotion.

A24 may have already secured the sleeper hit of 2025 if the trailer for Death of a Unicorn is anything to go by. A24 has been on a real hot streak of producing movies that hit the sweet spot between arthouse and mainstream. From Hereditary to Civil War or Everything Everywhere All at Once, they've been responsible for some of the most unique genre outings of the last decade. The trailer for Death of a Unicorn makes a good case that it might be added to the list of A24's best movies.
The premise sees a father and daughter accidentally running over a unicorn, whose body is then taken and examined by a pharmaceutical company. While the premise may sound like a kid's adventure film, Death of a Unicorn's trailer reveals it to be a gory horror comedy, where the unicorn's parent soon comes to seek revenge. The film...

Even after 50 years, it’s still an honor to host Saturday Night Live. And it’s even more so to become a member of the Five-Timers Club, that group of hosts who have stepped onto the stage at Studio 8H enough times to warrant a special jacket. And live from New York, as he helped bring 2024 to a close, Martin Short became the last member.
This week’s episode of Saturday Night Live opened with Tom Hanks, who hosted SNL for the fifth time in 1990 and as such took credit for creating the Five-Timers Club…Notably, while several people beat Hanks to the punch, the idea of the First-Timers Club was introduced during that 1990 episode. Enter Paul Rudd, who joined the Five-Timers Club in 2021. Soon enough it was time for host and inductee Martin Short, flying solo without his pal Steve Martin, actually the second person ever to host SNL five times following Buck Henry…...

Martin Short marked his fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live on December 21. And as is tradition, his predecessors returned to Studio 8H to induct him into the Five-Timers Club. The cold open on Saturday’s episode started with Tom Hanks seated in an armchair, introducing himself to viewers, and saying that he created the SNL Five-Timers Club in December 1990 as “an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.” Then Paul Rudd shows up and asks Hanks who he’s talking to. “Oh, I’m sorry,” Hanks responds. “I’ve done so many documentaries, whenever I sit in a leather chair, I just naturally assume I’m in one.” Hanks and Rudd invite Short into the clubroom, and Tina Fey is there to greet the newest member. Short hails Fey as “one of the rarest things in Hollywood: a writer who’s attractive enough to be on camera.” Alec Baldwin comes next,...

Nothing brings out the stars quite like a Saturday Night Live Five Timers Club meeting. So when Martin Short joined the club this week, SNL put together one reunion after another as a parade of cameos came out to celebrate.
Short, a former cast member, finally joined the illustrious club this weekend. He first hosted in 1986 and has become SNL's "Mr. December" as each hosting turn has come during the holiday month.
The combination of Short's fifth time hosting, the Christmas episode, and this being SNL's 50th season created the perfect recipe for cameos. And SNL over-delivered in the cold open and in the process, organized several TV and movie reunions for fans to enjoy. In no particular order...
Paul Rudd and Martin Short represented Only Murders in the Building. While everyone (including us here at Last Night On) expected Steve Martin to show up, Martin Short quickly nixed those expectations.

Scarlett Johansson has admitted how much she dreads her husband Colin Jost and his Weekend Update co-host Michael Che’s popular Joke Swap segment, in which each gets to read brutal jokes written by the other, sight unseen.
Once again, Jost was made to do jokes about Johansson — and this time, viewers could see her reaction from backstage. (Jonansson was one of several members of Saturday Night Live‘s Five-Timers club who showed up in the Cold Open to initiate tonight’s host Martin Short.)
Jost and Che traditionally humiliate each other in the segment but they took that to the next level this time with a slew of highly inappropriate jokes as Jost was forced to read his “in a Black voice,” starting with a slavery reparations dig.
The audience — and Jost — knew a Johansson joke is coming, and when her photo appeared, it was greeted by a mix...

Tonight on Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim hosted the Cibo Express Christmas Week Airport Parade, live from Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport.
“It’s chaos, it’s mayhem, and everyone’s afraid,” sing their Tsa agent characters in the sketch. “It’s the Christmas Week Airport Parade!”
“Good evening from Newark,” says Nwodim, “which is how you say ‘New York’ if you’re on pills, which I am.”
Nwodim introduces herself as Agent Chartreuse Hamilton; Bowen, as Umberto.
“Umberto, what kind of name is that?” asks Chartreuse.
“Well, my parents were unsure about naming me Berto,” Yang responds, “so they told the nurse, ‘Um, Berto?'”
“Love,” Chartreuse replies. “Umberto, who can we expect to see on the parade route this year?”
Umberto says there will be “some new appearances,” as well as the return of “some old classics,” with Chartreuse then going on to...
