Artists used to focus on becoming popular in their home territories first before attempting to reach out to an international audience. But in a world increasingly interconnected by a few popular streaming services, that dynamic has changed. “It’s become easier [for artists] to go overseas first,” Vincent “Tuff” Morgan, vice president of A&r for Peer Music, told Rolling Stone last year. “Once you develop a story abroad, you move back Stateside.”

There’s never been a more opportune time for Latinx artists to impact contemporary R&b than right now. Not that Latinos in R&b are an entirely new phenomenon — as evidenced by old school Chicano Soul artists like the Royal Jesters, or proto-rockeros Cannibal and the Headhunters, who once toured with the Beatles. Yet in recent years, a growing number of new voices have supplemented the genre with touches of Latinidad: including Chicano Batman, Kali Uchis, and Omar Apollo. Nevertheless, when you think of R&b hotbeds, Mexico isn...

Rosalía produced the album with El Guincho, and despite minimal radio play Stateside, it has earned around 40 million streams in the U.S. this year, according to the analytics company Alpha Data.
Rosalía was competing against Sebastián Yatra, Tony Succar, Ximena Sariñana, Alejandro Sanz, Luis Fonsi, Fonseca, Andrés Calamaro, Rubén Blades and Paula Arenas. Notably absent this year were...

Alejandro Sanz and Camila Cabello’s “Mi Persona Favorita” took home Record of the Year at the Latin Grammys. The saccharine acoustic ballad appeared earlier this year on Sanz’s new album, #Eldisco, and the singer performed it in Las Vegas on Thursday.
The odds were in Sanz’s favor in this category: He was nominated twice. In general, the category was dominated by seasoned performers: Marc Anthony, Juan Luis Guerra and Juanes were all up for the award along with Sanz. Anthony, a salsa star, was nominated for his first Grammy in 1996. Guerra,...

The Latin Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 20th annual Latin Grammy Awards with Flamenco pop star Rosalia (pictured) claiming the title of most recognized female artist with five nominations. But she has competition in Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, who takes the lead for most nominations with eight — three of which are shared with Camila Cabello.
“Mi Persona Favorita,” a collaborative project between Sanz and Cabello, the latter of Cuban heritage, earned the duo recognitions in the categories for best pop song, song of the year and record of the year. Rosalia’s song “Aute Couture” also earned her a nomination for song of the year.
Sanz’s song “No Tengo Nada” also landed him two nominations in the categories for record of the year and song of the year. Rosalia and J Balvin’s collaboration on the smash hit “Con Altura” earned her and the Colombian artist...

Now 50 years after the Stonewall Riots, the month of June has become synonymous with Lgbtq Pride. ‘Tis the season for campy pop classics to start creeping back into the airwaves — as well as seasonal releases that teeter between opportunistic cash grabs and gifts of sweaty, dancefloor catharsis. But don’t be deceived; timeless anthems Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and Sylvester’s “Mighty Real” still speak to the Lgbtq community’s fears, heartbreaks and life-affirming quests for authenticity, metabolized into song. In the case of Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Manuel Torreblanca,...

As Latin urban music continues to pervade the contemporary pop stratosphere — with the commercial growth of reggaeton and trap en español outpacing that of any other genre — it’s worth noting that regional Mexican music is also gaining speed. While it is true that the south-of-the-border genre has remained an enduring force within Spanish-speaking communities between the U.S. and Mexico for decades, its impact is arguably much bigger than what today’s Latin pop charts reflect.

Ximena Sariñana is out of touch. She’s not making Pepsi commercials for international markets, nor is she stoking political debates via Instagram. She’s not making a trendy sound like “Chicano Soul” — in fact, she doesn’t even know what that is. She’s not a Grammy darling, nor someone who rakes in many Pazz & Jop votes among music critics.
That’s not to call her irrelevant, though. Sariñana’s been in the public eye since she was nine years old, when she was cast in a small role in Hasta Morir,...

Best known for his arena-caliber Edm and bombastic bass drops, Los Angeles-born DJ-producer Dillon Francis has a long and storied history with Latin music. He began releasing mostly dubstep tracks in 2010, when the then-nascent moombahton genre — which combines electro-house with Latin-tinged reggaeton beats — first took the Internet by storm. Francis then notched his first major hit in 2011 via “Que Que,” a Spanish-language track alongside mentor and frequent collaborator Diplo, featuring Dominican-American artist Maluca. Fast-forward to 2018, and Francis has reached the cusp of a new career chapter: Dillon Francis, Latin pop crossover star.

It’s the time of year when festivalgoers have passed the white-knuckle phase of purchasing a wristband for the annual California desert phenomenon known as Coachella, which takes place over two consecutive weekends on April 13–15 and April 20–22. Now it’s time to explore the extensive and talented lineup.
The fest’s organizers at Goldenvoice have a reputation for keeping things fresh — see the Tupac Shakur hologram on stage with Snoop Dogg in 2012. Indeed, while it was originally billed as an indie rock festival, this year’s Music and Arts Festival will go without a single rock headliner for the first time.

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release.
