Due to the deliberately mysterious nature of the film, potential spoilers for "Foe" follow.
The premise of Garth Davis' turgid sci-fi mope-fest "Foe" is intriguing on paper. It's 2065, and the world is dying. Water and food are in short supply, and the government is experimenting with station-bound space colonies. Junior (Paul Mescal) is to be recruited for a two-year space mission that would keep him away from his long-suffering wife Hen (Saoirse Ronan). In exchange, the government has offered to outfit Hen's home with a pre-programmed clone of Junior, designed to keep her company.
From the premise, one might assume "Foe" plays out like a speculative "Twilight Zone" thought exercise, or perhaps a wicked/fun grim morality tale like one might encounter in "Tales from the Crypt." But, dear readers, let me assure you that "Foe" does nothing intriguing. Indeed, the bulk of Davis' pity party is little more than extended scenes of meandering,...

In early 2021, actor Armie Hammer’s Hollywood career came to a screeching halt after disturbing text messages emerged detailing Bdsm and cannibalism, followed by several accusations of sexual misconduct and, in the case of one woman, rape.
Two years later, Hammer is breaking his silence in the first interview since the scandal that’s cost him his career and his marriage, revealing he was a victim of child sexual abuse and that he was so distraught that he considered suicide.
Speaking with Air Mail, Hammer claimed that his interest in Bdsm stems from that childhood trauma, when he was sexually molested by a youth pastor when he was 13.

Focus Features’ tearjerker “Spoiler Alert” is now open nationwide, and audiences everywhere are driving Kleenex stock through the roof. Based on TVLine founder Michael Ausiello‘s 2017 memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is directed by Michael Showalter and it may or may not be the latest installment in the “Smurfs” movie series (you’ll have to watch it and decide for yourself). In all seriousness, “Spoiler Alert” details the ups and downs of Ausiello’s relationship with Kit Cowan, which tragically ends after Cowan passes away from neuroendocrine cancer.
“Spoiler Alert” reviews are pouring in at Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently has an 82 critics score and a 96 audience score. The acting duo of Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge are receiving unanimous praise for their roles as Ausiello and Cowan, respectively, with Odie Henderson (Boston Globe) raving that the two male leads “have fantastic chemistry together.” Parsons is a...

Is it better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all? This is the core question of "Spoiler Alert," the queer romantic drama and biographical film, adapted from the memoir "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies" by Michael Ausiello. Jim Parsons stars as Michael, a dorky TV writer (ouch — I'm in this film and I don't like it) who, thanks to a chance encounter, meets the love of his life, Kit Cowan (Ben Aldridge). As the relationship grows, the two encounter the kinds of problems unique to members of the gay community. It's all very sweet, but there's a catch: The very first scene of the film tells us Kit dies in the end.
The film was directed by Michael Showalter, who is probably best known for writing and starring in "Wet Hot American Summer" and directing "The Big Sick" and last year's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Sure, I know that Valentine’s Day is a couple of months away, but romance can be found, or at least blossom, during the holiday season at year’s end. Plus it’s awards time for the movie studios, so why not release a love story based on an acclaimed recent memoir? And they’re “hedging their bet” since its cast includes a lauded sitcom TV star and a two-time Oscar winner. Plus its director is a friend of the “golden guy” as he’s helped to guide some collaborators to big wins (note the “b” word). Now, I could tell you much more, but that would require a big Spoiler Alert.

A platoon of titles hits the specialty circuit this weekend, getting in ahead of steamroller Avatar: Way of Water and the year-end deadline for Oscar eligibility. This is a soul-searching, what-lies-ahead moment for a market still much too inconsistent for comfort, but that can be pondered later. At the moment, indie distributors are quite busy “with all these movies, and these plans to release theatrically. We are not going anywhere,” said one executive.
The Gotham Awards earlier this were were a shot of goodwill. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski recalled “the mandate that all of us share in the specialty film business” at the ceremony in NYC, kicking off awards season.
“To all our friends at A24, at Neon, at Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics, IFC, Bleecker Street, FilmNation, Cinetic, Participant and so many other wonderful companies,” he said — accepting an industry tribute with vice chairman Jason Cassidy – “We are in there together,...

Plot: Spoiler Alert tells the love story of Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan and the heartbreaking turn it takes with Kit’s battle with terminal cancer.
Review: Tragedy and romance go hand in hand in Hollywood. From the Golden Age on, the lovestruck couple facing impossible odds can often connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level. When you look at films like Beaches or Steel Magnolias, the appeal is the drama and the cast. And now, in the new movie Spoiler Alert, we have a romantic tale that is very aware of previous ones that have come before it. The film stars Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge as two men who fall deeply in love and share their life together before tragedy comes calling. It’s a heartfelt film with fine performances from the two leads and co-stars, Sally Field and Bill Irwin.
Michael Ausiello (Parsons) is a nice guy who writes about television.

As a film critic, I don’t watch much television. There simply isn’t time, what with all the new movies opening each week. As for the critics and columnists who cover television, I don’t know how they do it. How do these people — folks like Michael Ausiello, editor-in-chief of TVLine (owned by Variety parent company Pmc) and author of “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies” — manage to keep up with the sheer volume of new shows on TV, much less nurse a partner through a terminal battle with Stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer?
It’s a dream job, albeit a demanding one, for a boob tube-obsessed soul like Ausiello, though it was his private life that inspired his best piece of writing — and by extension, “The Big Sick” director Michael Showalter’s latest laugh-a-little/cry-a-little rom-com, based on Ausiello’s 2017 memoir. The tonal demands of a romantic-comedy tearjerker prove far too much to handle for director Michael Showalter in “Spoiler Alert,” an awkward and uncertain adaptation of TV critic Michael Ausiello’s memoir, which deals with the illness of Ausiello’s longterm partner Kit Cowan.
Many of the scenes here seem to have been shot in a spirit of tense desperation; the comedy doesn’t land, the romance takes too long to get going, and the tearjerking scenes are spoiled by a meta framework that makes Showalter’s job even more difficult.
“Spoiler Alert” starts with Ausiello (Jim Parsons) embracing a very sick Cowan in a hospital bed, and this leads to a flashback to their first meeting 14 years or so earlier. We see Ausiello at his job at TV Guide, where he is asked to write more about “Fear Factor” instead of “Gilmore Girls,” and then we see him out...

In his best film, 2017’s The Big Sick, director Michael Showalter showed a deft hand balancing interracial rom-com conventions with an affecting dash of hospital drama to deliver a love story distinguished by humorous, culturally specific insights and tender depth of feeling. Spoiler Alert in many ways is a queer companion piece, exploring another relationship drawn from real life, this time between gay men. The chief difference, as the title and opening scene indicate, is the outcome of the illness, pushing the new movie further into traditional weepie territory, a move acknowledged with a winking nod to Terms of Endearment.
There are elements of preciousness and quirks that can lean toward the cutesy, even if they do come directly from entertainment journalist Michael Ausiello’s memoir about his 13 years with photographer Kit Cowan. I mean, how many gay men would stick around after...

If a story is based on real-life events, can it ever really be spoiled? That's one of those infamous internet arguments that will rage on until the end of time, especially as the biopics keep pouring in from Hollywood. But the latest entry into the genre doesn't care how you feel about knowing the ending — it's leading with the inevitable, then rewinding to tell the full story.
"Spoiler Alert" is based on the memoir by TVLine founder and entertainment reporter Michael Ausiello, and follows the 14-year relationship between Michael (Jim Parsons) and Kit (Ben Aldridge) prior to Kit's eventual death from cancer. The film’s story, which was penned by screenwriters David Marshall Grant and Dan Savage, is based on Ausiello’s 2017 book of the same name. “Spoiler Alert,” a new feature led by Jim Parsons from Focus Features, has added four stars to its ensemble cast.
Antoni Porowski of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” Tony award winner Nikki M. James (“The Book of Mormon”), Jeffery Self (“Search Party”) and Bill Irwin (“Rachel Getting Married”) have all joined the project directed by Michael Showalter.
Having just wrapped principal photography in New York, the film is based on Michael Ausiello’s bestselling memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words.” It charts the emotionally turbulent 11-month journey of Ausiello’s former partner Kit, from his diagnosis with terminal cancer to his death. Interwoven in the narrative are glimpses of the roller-coaster ride that was the couple’s 14-year romance.
The actors join the previously announced Parsons, Ben Aldridge, and Sally Field — who reunites with Showalter following their 2015 quirky festival darling “Hello, My Name is Doris.

As cultural activities have begun drawing crowds again after the Covid-19 abyss of 2020, masks and other protocols have been a work in progress — especially when red carpets are involved.
Real Time host Bill Maher, during tonight’s panel segment on the show, criticized what he saw as a disconnect at this week’s Met Gala in New York. He flashed on the screen a number of photos from the glitzy event showing maskless guests being attended to by staffers who were wearing masks. Maher said these kinds of tableaux are becoming common in 2021 as people navigate the return to norms that feel anything but normal.

There are countless podcasts that strike a contrarian pose or promise a mind-expanding journey; few fulfill the promise. But Psychoactive, a new podcast on drugs hosted by Ethan Nadelmann, delivers — in spades.
Nadelmann founded, and for decades ran, the Drug Policy Alliance, an anti-Drug War nonprofit, before stepping down in 2017. (Rolling Stone profiled Nadelmann as he helped lead the battle to legalize marijuana in the 2013.) After a few years of quiet and reflection, Nadelmann is back with an ambitious project to lead a deep and challenging national conversation about drugs and the human experience.

Refresh for updates: Former President Donald Trump eulogized Rush Limbaugh on Fox News today by noting, “People whether they loved him or not, they respected him.”
Apparently Trump hasn’t been keeping up with Twitter since getting booted from the platform.
“Rush Limbaugh already started a radio show in Hell,” tweeted Saturday Night Live‘s Luke Null, “and is ranting about how the devil should shut the fiery gates because all these Outsiders are ruining everything!”
Satirist Randy Rainbow offered a succinct, “Bye gurl. Amen.”
With a flood of social media posts compiling the many racist, homophobic, misogynistic and just plain cruel comments made by the right-wing radio host over the years, his supporters certainly made their voices heard too.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has no shortage of high-profile guest judges who have stepped behind the desk to evaluate its contestants. But judge Michelle Visage recently revealed one of the show’s most-wanted guest judges, Dolly Parton, has been dodging their requests for more than 10 seasons.
Parton is unquestionably a queer icon, but Visage said the queen of country’s schedule just doesn’t allow for the star to commit to judging.
“Just to let everybody know we have asked Dolly Parton for 11, 12, 13 years,” Visage told the Huffington Post in an interview Tuesday. “At the end of the day it’s scheduling, and it’s a very long day for these people.”
Visage also said that the show has asked several other LGBTQ icons, including Cher and Liza Minelli, who’ve also had to decline because of scheduling conflicts. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” worked for years to get contemporary pop icon Lady Gaga...

In an effort to make a splash in the ever-expanding streaming wars, the new platform Quibi has produced a nature show hosted by Reese Witherspoon, given Chance the Rapper the reins to the new “Punk’d,” profiled former “Drag Race” winner Sasha Velour’s highbrow drag show “NightGowns,” and tried to make Chrissy Teigen the next “Judge Judy.” Launched by Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO Meg Whitman, and an obscene amount of Silicon Valley money, the mobile-only service bet on dwindling attention spans to deliver bite-sized creative content in 8-10 minute increments. Unfortunately, the platform has had trouble making a splash since its April 6 launch, with low streaming numbers prompting some advertisers to defer payments.
When A-list celebrities fail to impress, one can always bank on sex to draw some eyeballs. Thankfully, Quibi’s latest attempt is tastefully done and seems to have the right intent. “Sex Next Door,” which recently premiered on the platform,...

In theory, a series based on “Modern Love,” the wildly popular “New York Times” column about real life relationships, is a slam dunk. There’s no shortage of material, it already has an audience, and there’s no premise more open-ended than “love.” All a TV version of “Modern Love” had to do was pick compelling stories, connect some narrative dots, and cast a handful of beautiful people to give it a glossier finish than it ever had in print.
Amazon’s adaptation, developed by “Sing Street” writer/director John Carney, is a success on exactly one of these fronts. You’ll hardly find a more charismatic and photogenic cast than this one, which includes actors like Dev Patel, Anne Hathaway, Catherine Keener, Andrew Scott and Tina Fey to tell a different story in every episode. Bill Maher closed out the 500th episode of his HBO series Real Time with Bill Maher with a bruising appraisal of the Democratic Party’s feckless options for 2020 and a point-by-point explanation of why there is one (and only one) “sure-thing winner” for the opposition party: Oprah Winfrey.
“I am telling you, at this particular moment in history and in this particular election year, she is the only candidate who is a sure-thing winner for the Democrats,” Maher said, adding as an aside: “No pressure.”
Maher noted several times that he wasn’t urging Winfrey to run (he said that would be for others to do) and he expressed doubts that she would ever enter the race. And, with more exasperation than excitement, Maher explained that Winfrey’s media position and her stature with women are among the reasons she could take the White House from President Donald J. Trump.

The last time John Cameron Mitchell was a series regular on a TV show was in 1997, when he was a supporting character on the short-lived Fox comedy “Party Girl,” starring Christine Taylor. Between then and now, the veteran actor and director became a cult icon as the creator of stage-show-turned-hit-film “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” — while also eventually discovering the joy of acting, as long as he’s “actually having fun instead of it feeling like my main thing.”
As a series regular on the Hulu series “Shrill,” Mitchell plays Gabe, Annie’s (Aidy Bryant) persnickety newspaper boss — a character technically based to some degree on writer and activist Dan Savage, with whom author Lindy West worked several years ago.

Actor Anthony Rapp, best known for his roles in movies like Adventures in Babysitting and Rent, accused Kevin Spacey of sexual assault in an interview with BuzzFeed News over the weekend. Anthony revealed that in 1986, when he was just 14 years old, he attended a party at Kevin's home (who was 26 at the time) while they were both working on Broadway. After realizing he was the only one left in the apartment at the end of the night, he says Kevin tried to make sexual advances toward him by picking him up, placing him on his bed, and climbing on top of him. "I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually," Anthony said. "He sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk." Shortly after Anthony's interview was released, Kevin responded on Twitter with a statement,...
