Rosalind Elias, a mezzo-soprano who at 24 began a 42-year association with the Metropolitan Opera but didn’t make her Broadway debut until she’d turned 81, died Sunday, May 3, in New York. She was 90.
Her death was reported by the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Opera News. No cause was given.
Elias, though long known to opera devotees, was a newcomer to many in the Broadway audience when she played Heidi in the 2011 Kennedy Center production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies (the limited engagement revival premiered at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center prior to it transfer to Broadway’s Marquis Theatre). Directed by Eric Schaeffer, the Follies revival featured a star-filled cast including, among others, Danny Burstein, Jan Maxwell, Elaine Paige, Bernadette Peters, Jayne Houdyshell, Mary Beth Peil and Kirsten Scott..
Even among such Broadway veterans, Elias received considerable public and press attention for her performance as Heidi Schiller, a Broadway legend who performs Follies‘ “One More Kiss” (the young version of the character was played in the revival by Leah Horowitz).
In a 2011 interview with Playbill, Elias said she identified with Heidi “because I am of the age of ‘Never look back’…It’s not an easy thing to do, because I keep looking back, but I try not to. When I do look back, I’m not bitter. I’m happy because I’ve had a blessed path.”
Elias sang 687 performances with New York’s Metropolitan Opera and on tour from 1954 to 1996, spanning 35 Met seasons. Occasional forays into musical theatre included the Follies revival, a 1984 New York City Opera staging of Sweeney Todd, and a 2008 Hawaii production of A Little Night Music.
Rip, #RosalindElias, 1930-2020. In light of her recent passing, we honor mezzo-soprano and friend of the Guild, Rosalind Elias. Ms. Elias joined the Guild's board in 2012 and was one of the inaugural members of the our Artists’ Council. Full obituary – https://t.co/sR3ia6F1Zt pic.twitter.com/mpkqmndkPr

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the worst show you’ve ever reviewed? Why was it so bad? Did you waver over the grade or rating you gave it?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I’ve compared “Mixology” to contracting TV herpes, “Fuller House” to exhuming a bloating, gaseous corpse and called “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” the perfect xenophobic TV show for Trump’s America. Still, there’s little doubt that no show has ever made me so irate for its mere misguided existence than a little show called “H8r” on The CW. If you don’t remember “H8r” the premise was this: Mario Lopez drives his F-list celebrity...

I dress femme, I’m starting estrogen in a couple weeks, I’ve flirted with voice training, and when I go out for a walk it’s pretty solid odds that at least one passer-by is going to scream some shopworn slur at me. This review was a deeply personal experience for me, and it’s as much a breakdown of my thoughts on life as a trans person as it is a dissection of a sweet, uncomplicated rom-com.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smarter, warmer, more honest depiction of human sexuality than this roundrobin of emotion and attraction. I love this movie. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ricky (Michelle Hendley) hates life in her small rural Kentucky town. She’s working in a cafe there only until she hears back from the New York design school she’s applied to; she dreams of having her own line of clothing and already has quite a following on her YouTube channel devoted to fashion. She and her purely platonic best friend Robby (Michael Welch: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1) pass their time hanging out and have teasing conversations about the differences between men and women when it comes to love and sex and relationships.
All totally normal for a couple of young 20somethings.

It is hard to think of a more generic title for a romantic comedy than Boy Meets Girl, although the newest film from writer/director Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) is much more unique than its limp name implies. The title does not refer to a meeting between two people of different genders, but the merging of gender identities. Protagonist Ricky (Michelle Hendley) was born a man but identifies as a woman. As a child, she dressed up in gowns for Halloween. In high school, she ditched football for fashion blogging and dress designing.
In a time when greater awareness about the transgender community has created much more cultural acceptance, watching Boy Meets Girl feels both liberating and limiting. That liberation comes from Schaeffer’s openness to delve into questions of gender, identity and sexuality, However, familiar plotting, characters and dialogue limit the depth of the drama. Regardless, one can...

When Filmmaker last checked in on Eric Schaeffer in 2013, he was busy making his web series, Eric Schaeffer: Life Coach. The article focused on Schaeffer’s determination to create the piece in any format necessary, as he transformed what was originally planned as a feature film into a self-produced web series that he produced himself. Schaeffer’s next project is a feature film that took much of the same Diy determination. Boy Meets Girl is a romantic coming-of-age comedy, a staple of indie fare, but here featuring a transgender protagonist. The film investigates sexual identity and gender in very relevant ways in […]...

It's the role that catapulted a newcomer named Audrey Hepburn to international stardom and later served as the centerpiece to one of the most Oscar-laden movie musicals in Hollywood history. Now, Vanessa Hudgens - exclusively seen here for the first time in character - is stepping into the enviable shoes of French novelist Colette's irresistible gamine in turn-of-the-20th-century Paris, Gigi, for the splashy stage musical of the same name. "Excited isn't a strong enough word!" the actress, who rose to fame as Gabriella Montez on the Disney Channel's High School Musical, tells People about landing the title role in the Broadway-bound adaptation.

Woody Allen’s back catalogue casts a long shadow across contemporary romantic comedy. His tropes and trademarks are as ingrained into the collective sense memory as mother’s perfume. At the first tremble of a clarinet, mutter about mortality or meander across a Manhattan neighbourhood, we inhale the nostalgia like Bisto kids. And arguably we’d never have met Harry and Sally, walked the Sidewalks of New York or dined alongside Friends with Money without his influence.
The Longest Week is peppered with Woody base notes. Over the course of seven days, Conrad (Jason Bateman) has been stripped of the safety net of his wealth and the cushion of his ego, moved in with his cynical best friend (Billy Crudup) and accidentally fallen in love with his girl (Olivia Wilde). His eventual dilemma – to be or not to be a better man – is as timeless as Annie Hall.
