John Legend is no stranger to documentaries. Last month, he and his Get Lifted Films’ co-founders Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius announced that they would serve as executive producers on Oscar-nominated Waad Al-Kateab’s latest docu “We Dare to Dream.”
This month, Legend is behind HBO Documentary Films’ “Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School.” About an annual music program in the city’s Hill-Freedman World Academy, the 54-minute docu features 10th-grade students learning to write, compose, produce, and perform original songs. Together with local musicians, the students pitch concepts, work out arrangements, and eventually create an album that captures the challenges they are living through and the joy music brings to their respective lives.
Director Amy Schatz spent one school year following a group of students from the program as they came up with song ideas, went through the recording process, and release their collaborative album.

Following a judge’s ruling that Donald Trump exaggerated his net worth and asset values to grow his real estate empire, the former president now faces the possibility of losing said real estate, at least in New York. And, according to “Morning Joe” panelist Rev. Al Sharpton, that pokes a very specific sore spot for Trump: his daddy issues.
Discussing the possibility of Trump losing some of his most famous properties on Friday, the MSNBC panelists all agreed that this is probably more devastating to Trump that any of the 91 criminal charges he still faces (his four indictments are separate from this civil case).
“I think the criminal indictments are something that he can spar with, and he feels he may get away with,” Rev. Al Sharpton said. “But I think that the civil case is an existential threat to him. This is who he is.”

Donald Trump challenged President Biden, Rupert Murdoch and more to a mental acuity test in another angry Truth Social rant, fueled by the confidence of “acing” his last one. But, as MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” hosts argued, this idea would definitely “not work out well” for Trump “on so many levels.”
Trump’s latest screed came Sunday in response to a new poll from the Wall Street Journal, which asked voters for their thoughts on both Biden and Trump’s age and mental state, in relation to being president again.
“In a phony and probably rigged Wall Street Journal poll, coming out of nowhere to softened [sic] the mental incompetence blow that is so obvious with Crooked Joe Biden, they ask about my age and mentality,” Trump wrote. “Where did that come from?”

A 2003 MSNBC video has resurfaced of a young Vivek Ramaswamy asking Rev. Al Sharpton about his lack of political experience during Sharpton’s run for the 2004 Democratic nomination. The footage has spread on social media as people, including Ramaswamy’s Republican primary opponents, question the candidate’s own lack of experience in professional politics. Ramaswamy’s background is in business.
Ramaswamy, then an 18-year-old Harvard student, was questioning Sharpton at an October 2003 event hosted by former MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews. Ramaswamy began, “Hello, I’m Vivek, and I want to ask you: last week on the show we had Sen. Kerry, and the week before, we had Sen. Edwards. And my question for you is, of all the Democratic candidates out there, why should I vote for the one with the least political experience?”
Sharpton fired back, “Well, you shouldn’t, because I have the most political experience,” to approving laughter from the crowd.

Exclusive: Filmmaker George C. Wolfe was not interested in doing what he termed “icon crap” in his movie Rustin, about the multi-layered life of Bayard Rustin, regarded as one of the most influential organizers of the Civil Rights Movement and the architect of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which took place 60 years ago this week.
“You have to have an extraordinary degree of irreverence and approach it like, ‘This is a human being.’ Because if you’re doing icon crap, it is very easy for you to fall into boring or reverential, and we have statues for that,” said Wolfe of his film that stars Colman Domingo as the man who often was at Dr. Martin Luther King’s side.
Many have opined that Rustin has been neglected by history.

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.

The hosts and panelists of “Morning Joe” added their voices to the chorus criticizing the launch of Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign, after the announcement via Twitter Spaces was plagued by glitches on Wednesday night.
On Thursday morning’s episode of the MSNBC talk show, the hosts and panelists pretty much agreed unanimously that DeSantis’ launch went as poorly as it could go, after starting 20 minutes late because Twitter’s servers purportedly couldn’t handle the volume of people tuning in to listen (which former Twitter CEO Elon Musk and DeSantis’ camp have been spinning as a good thing).
“I mean, it was an abomination,” former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri said bluntly. “And just so much hubris all around, from DeSantis, from Musk — by the way, 700,000 people is not that much. Like, Twitter should be able to handle 700,000 people.”

Following the Texas outlet mall shooting that left at least eight dead, Joe Scarborough was barely able to conceal his anger at Governor Greg Abbott as he hosted “Morning Joe” on Monday.
“There is a sickness in the state of Texas, and that sickness starts at the very top with Greg Abbott, who refuses to protect little children in the state of Texas,” Scarborough said.
The mass shooting took place in Dallas on Saturday evening. The suspected gunman, which many outlets have reported was 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, arrived at the mall in tactical gear and armed with an Ar-15. He also had five other guns that were found in his nearby car. The shooter’s motive is currently unknown, but he was wearing a patch that referenced the Right Wing Death Squad, a phrase that is popular among “right-wing extremists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists.”

The world continues to mourn after hearing the news that Harry Belafonte died on April 25 at 96 years old. Although he might be most instantly recognizable for his roles in Hollywood and his musical hits, his legacy within the civil rights movement is deeply felt today. He fiercely advocated for political and humanitarian causes throughout his life, working alongside fellow activists and leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In 2005, Belafonte founded the Gathering for Justice, a nonprofit organization that provides an intergenerational forum for activists, community members, formerly incarcerated folks, and more to work towards ending child incarceration and eliminating the racial inequities in our justice system.
Carmen Perez-Jordan is president and CEO of the Gathering for Justice, and was a close mentee of Belafonte's for two decades. She's a pioneer within the social justice movement in her own right, cofounding Justice League NYC and organizing the 2017 Women's March as a cochair.

Whitney Houston had “the Voice.” It was trained, expressive, and clear. She didn’t write the songs she sang, but interpreted them, capturing the imagination of a generation. The first triple RIAA Diamond-certified-selling Black artist, Houston broke records set by the Beatles, Elvis, and Sinatra, which had nothing to do with racial divides. Now streaming on Netflix, I Wanna Dance with Somebody stars British actress Naomi Ackie, who plays Houston as a harried artist, only taking her time during performance, but rushed on and off the stage.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons and written by Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody), the musical biopic captures the melody of Houston’s life but also speeds the beat. It misses the rests between notes. Most of the erroneous materials come from narrative streamlining. For instance, Houston wasn’t discovered because her mother, the ever-professional Cissy Houston (Tamara Tunie), showed up at a club like Sweetwaters pretending to have laryngitis.

Even Donald Trump’s attorney declined to defend social media posts from the former president attacking Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, including an image of Trump wielding a baseball bat next to a picture of Bragg’s head. A lawyer representing Trump, Joe Tacopina, characterized as “ill-advised” that post and another where Trump warned of “death and destruction” if he is criminally charged for a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
During Tacopina’s Sunday appearance on Meet the Press, host Chuck Todd listed the various attacks Trump has made against Bragg.

The “Morning Joe” team had much to say Monday morning about “Dilbert” creator Scott Adams’ recent racist remarks and the professional fallout he’s experienced in the days since – but it mostly amounts to one sentiment: Good riddance.
“I’ve seen people who have spoken out against cancel culture repeatedly,” co-host Joe Scarborough began, addressing panelist Rev. Al Sharpton. “You and I have actually, as well, on many occasions have spoken out against the wokeness of this cancel culture. But, I mean, this is – even some people who are really intensely fighting cancel culture are saying, ‘This ain’t cancel culture, this is just racism being called out.’ People don’t want to be associated with a guy that says, ‘I’m gonna stay away from Black people.'”

A lifelong New Yorker, Rev. Al Sharpton has a unique perspective on Rudy Giuliani’s rise as city mayor and the so-called “Sheriff of Wall Street.”
Speaking on record as part of Rebecca Gitlitz’s revealing new docuseries, “When Truth Isn’t Truth: The Rudy Giuliani Story,” the longtime politician, MSNBC host and founder of the National Action Network shared that the series’ embattled subject is someone who’s always needed “an enemy.”
“Rudy Giuliani was always a calculated, intentional demagogue,” Sharpton said in an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, which you can watch above. “The way you do politics is find an enemy, beat up on them [and] play on people’s fears and prejudices. He needs an enemy.”

On Nov. 4, 2022, Drake and 21 Savage dropped their highly anticipated joint project, "Her Loss." Upon first listen, I found it to be a commendable addition to their respective portfolios. But then I delved deeper into the project, and I came across something strikingly unsavory as Drake threw passive-aggressive shade at everyone on the record - specifically the livelihood of three Black women: Megan Thee Stallion, Serena Williams, and Ice Spice. One of the Certified Lover Boy's most vicious bits include his lyrics indirectly - but clearly - directed at Megan: "This b*tch lie bout gettin bout' shots but she still a stallion / She don't even get the joke but she still smilin'."

“The Daily Show” guest host Dl Hughley had a good laugh at Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday night, after Hannity admitted that “there is a small majority of bad cops,” and argued that they need to stop killing white people too. Hughley dubbed Hannity a “white Al Sharpton” for his comments.
The moment came as Hughley pulled up a segment of Hannity’s show, in which he called out “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg, for wondering if nationwide police reform would only happen if the victim was white.
“Clearly, it doesn’t matter if it’s a white policeman or a Black policeman, it is a problem in the policing itself, you know?” Whoopi said on Monday. “Seems things don’t make sense to people unless it’s somebody they can feel, or they can recognize. Rev. Al Sharpton called on Congress to push through anti-police brutality legislation in the wake of Tyre Nichols’ death and funeral, where he delivered a rousing eulogy on Wednesday.
During a Thursday appearance on “Morning Joe,” the civil rights activist and MSNBC contributor said the time had come “for Congress to stop this and really up the ante legally” on police accountability.
“I think when Americans saw that video of a man, they didn’t even ask him for his license and registration. They never said, ‘We stopped you for this crime.’ They just dragged him out of the car and started beating him, and a lot of Americans said, ‘Wait a minute now, this is a bridge too far,'” Sharpton told “Morning Joe” panelist Willie Geist.

Tyre Nichols was laid to rest Wednesday following a memorial service in Memphis, nearly one month after the 29-year-old died after being beaten by five police officers during a Jan. 7 traffic stop.
Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance at the funeral after being invited to speak at the last minute by the Rev. Al Sharpton. Harris denounced the actions of the police officers who beat Nichols and called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, saying that President Joe Biden would sign it into law.

No one will accuse Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody of glossing over the turbulent life of Whitney Houston. In its two-plus hours, the movie, which was authorized by Houston’s family and was co-produced by her music mentor Clive Davis, features a multi-layered performance by British actress Naomi Ackie, whose lip-synching to Houston’s vocals is incredibly convincing. The movie doesn’t skimp on scenes of Houston in the possession of drugs, kissing and frolicking with her close companion (and future creative director) Robyn Crawford, going into rehab,...

The Sun has said it regrets the publication of a Jeremy Clarkson’s column about the Duchess of Sussex and is “sincerely sorry”.
In a statement, the newspaper said: “Columnists’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher, we realise that with free expression comes responsibility.

The apology comes after the piece, in which Clarkson said he “hated” Meghan, became the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s (Ipso) most complained-about article.

In the column Clarkson wrote that he dreamt of the day the Duchess would be made to parade naked through Britain while a crowd chanted “shame” and threw “excrement” at her.

In an inspiring new documentary, the preacher and activist talks about his tireless quest for racial justice and equality
There are many familiar sides to the Rev Al Sharpton. There is Al Sharpton the preacher-protester, marching fearlessly through hostile white neighbourhoods in New York City; Al Sharpton the racial justice warrior, arm-in-arm with the mother of the latest police shooting victim; Al Sharpton the progressive TV host, pounding out his monologue on MSNBC.
Then there is the very unfamiliar image that fills the screen towards the end of Loudmouth, the new documentary on his life and battles. It shows Al Sharpton slumped to the ground, literally on his knees.

This review originally ran June 19, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
Introducing “Loudmouth” at the Tribeca Festival, Robert De Niro referred to the film’s subject, lifelong racial justice activist Rev. Al Sharpton, as “so soft-spoken and so reasonable.” The audience at the closing-night screening, many of them the Rev’s personal guests, laughed.
But De Niro, a friend of Rev. Sharpton, seemed to mean the sentiment genuinely, showing the severe divide between the Rev. Sharpton of the 1980s, an unapologetic practitioner of civil disobedience who was staunchly critical of whites as a class, and today’s Rev. Sharpton, an old-school liberal who has his own show on MSNBC.
“Loudmouth,” directed by Josh Alexander (“Prescription Thugs”), chronicles that evolution, although it leaves most of the pushback against Rev. Sharpton to archival footage rather than challenging the legend head-on.

"I understand the anger. I have been fighting these issues for decades." Greenwich Ent. has revealed their trailer for Loudmouth, a documentary profiling the legendary Reverend Al Sharpton. The currently 68-year-old civil rights activist, Baptist minister, talk show host and politician was born in Brooklyn, New York. The doc premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and they explain what it's all about: "Viewers [will] peek under the fold and witness the unrestricted details of Sharpton’s development from an 8-year-old preacher to a (sometimes painted as controversial) civil rights figure. Along with his history in the public eye, the good and the bad, the film offers behind the scenes insight into Sharpton’s experience as a presidential candidate advisor and racial justice advocate during the volatile climate of 2020." This is a fantastic trailer that does a great job introducing Sharpton and showing us a glimpse of his past and present.

Do you feel the need? The need for ... another Blu-ray column? The biggest entry in this latest Blu-ray round-up is, of course, the mega-hit "Top Gun: Maverick." But there are a bunch of other major releases here, including a Criterion Collection edition of "Malcolm X," Mia Goth going crazy in "Pearl," a massive box set from Columbia Pictures, a 4K release of "Punisher: War Zone," the latest from George Miller, and a Brian De Palma classic. So keep spinning those discs.
Top Gun: Maverick

Chicago – The Reverend Al Sharpton has been a “Loudmouth” … as the new documentary on his life and work is called … virtually all his life. His outspoken activism began a year after Dr. King was killed, when Sharpton became Youth Director of Operation Breadbasket at age 15, and continues to today, especially around the killing of George Floyd. Rev. Al Sharpton appeared on the Red Carpet at the 58th Chicago International Film Festival.
Sharpton appeared at the 58th Chicago International Film Fest on behalf of “Loudmouth” – directed by Josh Alexander – which cuts through the clichés and assumptions surrounding the track-suit-wearing crusader to investigate the roots of his political engagement and his transformation into a media-savvy activist. Playing into the tabloid journalism of the Jerry Springers and Phil Donahues of his heyday, Sharpton effectively raised awareness about the systemic injustice, racism, and white supremacy that has persisted in America. As he once famously declared,...

This review originally posted Sept. 3, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Near the rousing climax of Santiago Mitre’s courtroom procedural “Argentina, 1985,” making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, an affecting phone call between a mother and a son shines as an ideological lighthouse, offering the promise that people’s long-held beliefs can evolve for the better. And if one individual can change, then an entire society can reevaluate its faults to amend them.
This impeccably executed portrait of a country at a crossroads chronicles at length the Trial of the Juntas, a nearly unthinkable opportunity in the mid-1980s for the first government of Argentina’s embryonic democracy to try nine generals and admirals (including dictator Jorge Rafael Videla) for crimes against humanity committed during the military dictatorship in a civil court of law.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment is going big on Loudmouth. The company has acquired North American rights to the documentary about the Rev. Al Sharpton, and plans a December 9 theatrical release for the film just as Oscar shortlist voting rolls around.
The film directed by Josh Alexander held its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June, examining an activist, commentator and occasional political candidate who has been a major part of American life for almost 40 years.
“Sharpton has been a polarizing figure, inspiring both love and hate on local and national stages,” a release for the film stated. “Chronicling his work for social change from the streets of 1980s Brooklyn to 2020s Minneapolis, Loudmouth presents never-before-seen footage of the social justice titan on the frontlines, in the media as well as in the corridors of power, to paint an intimate and revealing portrait of a tireless warrior who has never...

MSNBC Films unveiled its upcoming series “Model America” on Tuesday.
According to the program’s log-line, the four-part documentary “dissects America’s complicated relationship with race through the lens of the people of Teaneck, New Jersey, a ‘racial utopia’ turned unlikely ground zero for the modern Black Lives Matter Movement. “
“Model America” details the fallout events that took place after 16-year-old Phillip Pannell was fatally shot by Gary Spath, a White police officer, on April 10, 1990. As the tragic death shakes up the city, rumors and misinformation begins to spread begging those in Teaneck to question if the city is really a home without racial tensions.
While the city questions whether Pannell was surrendering or attempting to pull out a when Spath fired his weapon, Civil Rights leaders descend upon the city during the investigation and trial –– adding fuel to an already building fire.
30 years later the Teaneck community still struggles with how to move forward.
