Like a garden full of flowers and weeds, PBS’ Call the Midwife blossomed with a Season 11 debut full of life, death, joy and sadness.
The episode’s most fascinating juxtaposition occurred between Nurse Nancy’s life and that of a mentally unstable woman named Marigold Nyall when the show’s new season began in the spring of 1967. Officially a midwife now, Nancy set out to better her life and play a more present role in her daughter Colette’s world.

Twiggy, Joan Collins and Paul McCartney reminisce with the Alfie actor about a decade of smiley hippies and grumpy people in bowler hats
The enduring mystery of what Michael Caine is thinking and feeling remains intact during his watchable, if somewhat exasperating docu-reminiscence of 1960s swinging London. It certainly doesn’t say anything revealing or new about the man itself. With many images of smiley hippies and apoplectic people in bowler hats, the film is narrated by Caine in his inimitably measured and inscrutably deadpan style: the script is evidently the work of Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais whose 60s TV classic The Likely Lads sadly goes unmentioned.
David Bailey, Joan Collins, Sandie Shaw, Twiggy and Paul McCartney are interviewed here by Caine, though oddly and disappointingly off camera, their voices the accompaniment to old footage. Caine has said that he didn’t want the audience distracted by these faces all looking shockingly older.

“This place aint for the faint-hearted,” warns Rolo Haynes, conscienceless exploiter of other people’s misfortunes and curator of the Black Museum. “I think I can handle it” laughs young tourist Nish.
Oh, she can handle it.
This neatly woven anthology of three mini-stories is anchored by two excellent performances. The first is from British actor Letitia Wright, who’s soon to be seen in Marvel’s Black Panther, the second from the hugely charismatic Douglas Hodge (also British) as Haynes, emcee of this horror show.

It’s been 35 years since British songstress/icon/muse Kate Bush has performed live so her Aug. 26 return was highly anticipated and, according to some reviews, the show surpassed the almost impossibly high expectations fans and critics had placed on it. Bush, who draws a Stevie Nicks-like devotion among her followers, sold out 22 shows at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in 15 minutes when the “Before The Dawn” shows were announced several months ago. The notoriously performance shy Bush had last played the venue for three shows in 1979.The show sounds like an artistic spectacle with all her theatrical elements still in the forefront. Bush divided the concert into three parts: the first segment was a range of songs from her catalog, the second portion was The Ninth Wave- the back half of 1985’s “Hounds Of Love” album- while the third act was the second half of 2005’s “Aerial.” In other words,...

There's a pernicious misapprehension afoot that the Brits are the polite ones while Yanks are inclined to brusqueness or brashness, but a comparison of the varied reactions to the deaths of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher would seem to give the lie to this. While "The Great Communicator" was hailed for ending the Cold War (something surely Mr. Gorbachev deserves some credit for), with little mention of his disastrous economic policies and illegal covert wars, Thatcher has received her due as a "divisive" figure, even on the BBC. And, as I write this, there is a genuine chance that "Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead," will reach number one in the UK charts.
Nor were the British uniformly polite about her when she was alive. The Tories gave no encouragement to the art of cinema, or most of the other arts. Invited to talk about her favorite works of art on television,...

Veteran crooner Englebert Humperdinck is set to represent the UK in the 2012 Eurovision song contest which will be held in Azerbaijan during May. Humperdinck will sing Love Will Set You Free which was co-written by Grammy Award-winning Martin Terefe and Sacha Skarbek. Guitarist James Bryan who has previously worked with Nelly Furtado will accompany the singer on stage.
Humperdinck will be hoping to emulate British acts such as Bucks Fizz and Sandie Shaw who won the continental singing contest in the past but voters from Europe have been less than kind to British acts in recent years. Performers from East European nations have dominated the event for the last decade although Norway and Germany temporarily bucked that trend with a surprise wins in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Acts from 25 other nations...

Mary Hampton: Secret Gardens and Enchanted Follies, 15 June, Queen Elizabeth Hall roof garden
This is the first live event in the roof garden of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and it also launches Mary Hampton's Secret Gardens and Enchanted Follies tour, all taking place under a rising, eclipsed full moon. Based on Mary's fascination with the possession of beauty through the pursuit of idealism, this event will see her performing new repertoire from her forthcoming album, Folly. Hailed as one of the true originals of the "new" folk scene, Mary has a fragile, haunting voice that perfectly conveys the surreal satires, bittersweet romanticism and incisive wit of her songs.

We are only two months away from the Oscars, and members of the Academy are hard at work trying to decide who best deserves one of those five nomination slots.
Today, they released their shortlist for Best Original Song which tops out at an impressive 41 songs.
But we can already make an educated guess as to which five will be competition on Oscar night based on who the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards favored, and none of them involve Justin Bieber or Debbie Gibson.
“I See the Light” from “Tangled” earned a Best Song nod from both, as did “If I Rise” from “127 Hours” and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from “Burlesque.” Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3″ also seems a lock, since all of Newman’s songs for Disney/Pixar have scored nominations over the years.

"Made in Dagenham" is based on the true story about working class women fighting for equal pay with "one foot in the kitchen, one foot on the factory floor" in 1960's England. One of those feel good equal rights flicks with lots of empowering dick jokes that I'd probably never go and see -- but it has a killer soundtrack.
Among the 17 tracks that inspire the working girls, lead by Sally Hawkins, to stick it to the man are oldies by James Brown, The Kinks, Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, and reggae genius Desmond Dekker. Not all of these appear to have made it into the film (comparing it to the press release from Sony Pictures reveals at least 6 tracks not in the film) and The Playlist points out that the album notes that it "features music from and inspired by the film." Well, whatever works. Have a listen...

Made in Dagenham, the story of the Ford women's strike, is being rated by Us critics as the next Full Monty
Nervous, petite and a bit shy, Sally Hawkins is about to become one of Britain's most successful exports – and to give the town of Dagenham an unexpected moment of international glory.
The 34-year-old actress from south London has played starring roles in six films due for release this year and next, and the first to hit cinemas will tell the story of the 1968 strike at the Ford car works.
Made in Dagenham also stars Miranda Richardson, Jaime Winstone, Andrea Riseborough and Rosamund Pike, with Bob Hoskins and Kenneth Cranham playing the male leads. The film celebrates the 300 women machine workers at the car plant who walked out when their demand for the same pay grading as the men in the factory was refused. Their action led to the introduction...

Singer Sandie Shaw has condemned veteran punk rocker John Lydon for his behaviour at a recent awards ceremony.
The Puppet On A String hitmaker attended the Mojo Honours List awards ceremony last month, where Lydon picked up the Icon Award.
But she was unimpressed by the star's bad attitude and has accused him of being out of touch with modern times.
She explains, "The biggest gaffe of the evening was by Johnny Rotten. He has turned into a very odd caricature of his former Sex Pistols self.
"When given his award he insulted and swore at everyone present. While this may have gone down well during the punk era, it is out of step with these pragmatic times.
