Shout! Factory Will Release 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis' and Sketch Comedy Show 'Fridays' on DVD
The classic CBS sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which aired from 1959 to 1963, will finally be getting a DVD release -- Shout! Factory has picked up the right to release a box set of the complete series that will reach stores sometime this year, reports The Wrap. The show hasn't been previously available on DVD -- nor has Shout! Factory's other new acquisition, the ABC late night sketch comedy show "Fridays," an attempt to capitalize on the decline of "Saturday Night Live" in the non-Lorne Michaels era. "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which starred Dwayne Hickman as the popularity- and wealth-seeking titlular teenager, featured a young Warren Beatty as one of Dobie's rich kid antagonists and Tuesday Weld as Dobie's money-obsessed object of desire. The show was based on a collection of short stories by Max Shulman, which also spawed the 1953 musical "The Affairs of Dobie Gillis,...

Wall Street, they tell me, is on an upturn, and the economy is well on its way to recovery. Hooray and Huzzah! But, even if all this optimism is justified (which I doubt), the rough times aren't entirely behind us and, however long they linger, certain businesses are going to suffer -- especially certain businesses that may not be fit for survival in the digital world, like publishing for the niche markets of Sf and horror.

NEW YORK -- Chartoff Prods. is in love with Dobie Gillis. The production outfit headed by Robert Chartoff has sealed a deal -- along with attorney Gregg Homer -- to option rights to the late Max Shulman's short story collection The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, with plans to produce the project for the big screen. Robert Chartoff is best known for co-producing with his former partner Irwin Winkler such films as Rocky, The Right Stuff and Raging Bull. The Gillis short stories follow the trials and tribulations of Dobie Gillis, an All-American 1950s "boy next door," who is always "on the make" for romance and lusts after the beautiful but shallow Thalia Menninger.
