Two of the best new trends we have seen in anime lately is the emergence of original series, as in not based on manga, with titles like “Bna” and a combination of parodying/homage to the style of titles (or even genres) of the past as in series like “One Punch Man” and “Mob Psycho 100”. “Bang Brave Bang Bravern” manages to combine both, this time functioning as an homage/parody of mecha titles.

I always love a good “what if” when it comes to casting. What if Sean Conner didn’t turn down the role of Gandolf? What if Tom Selleck was Indiana Jones? And what if Val Kilmer was Paud Atreides in David Lynch’s Dune?
Although David Lynch’s adaptation of Dune was a critical and commercial disaster upon release, the film has gone on to develop a passionate cult following. Max Evry’s upcoming book A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune – An Oral History dives into the making of the movie with interviews from the cast and crew. Mashable has an exclusive excerpt from the book that reveals just how close Val Kilmer came to starring in the movie.

The Closing Night Gala will take place on Nov. 21 at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California.
“‘The Banker’ joins a remarkable group of films being released this year that openly confront centuries of racism and injustice in our country, while celebrating the brave individuals whose activism has created real change,” Michael Lumpkin, director of AFI Festivals, said.
“The Banker,” based on a true story, follows revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson), who “devise a risky plan to take on the racist establishment of the 1960s by helping other African Americans pursue the American dream,” according to the official plot summary. As big of a fan of Walter Hill as I am, it is shocking to me that I made it to the age of 36 without seeing Southern Comfort along the way. In fact, I’m not even certain I knew of its existence until I saw that Shout! Factory was releasing it to Blu-ray. This is the service that Shout! Factory provides. With their Scream Factory banner, they are providing the new generation of horror fans with an expert education in the genre, by establishing a brand that they trust, and then introducing them to titles that they probably wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. Apparently, even a genre veteran such as myself can be taught a thing or two by the label as well, and have pointed out for me that such a great “lost-in-the-woods” film exists. With a genre legend like Hill behind the camera, and acting legends such as Peter Coyote,...

This is a somewhat light week for Blu-ray releases, as far as quantity goes. In regards to quality, though, it is a pretty spectacular week. We have a Scream Factory release of a film once thought to be lost forever, and one of the most anticipated releases from Grindhouse since they started releasing Blu-ray. Also worth noting are releases of Afflicted by Sony, which is an eerily effective found-footage vampire film, and the complete first season of SyFy’s original show Helix. I realize that there are probably other titles hitting the shelves today, but this is both what I feel is worthy of your dollars, and the titles that I was sent to talk to you about. The summer releases are starting to heat up, and next week is pretty great as well.

Any week that includes a Scream Factory release could be considered a good week. This particular Scream factory release is of a film that has long eluded me. I’ve been aware of its existence, but never managed to actually acquire and consume it. Now that I’ve had that chance, I wish I had tracked it down before, so that I would have a frame of reference to compare the video and audio presentations to. From what I understand, The Final Terror was considered a “lost” film, and since it was a bucket list title, Scream Factory acquired several different sources in order to spruce it up, and splice together a master cut of the film. The Final Terror is not going to appeal to everyone, as in a lot of ways, it very much shows its age. However, if you like classic horror cinema – especially from the eighties...

Does The Final Terror Have the Goods Out in the Woods?
Hey creeps, I just sat down with Scream Factory’s Blu-ray of The Final Terror, and I feel like it’s my civic duty to get something out in the open right from the start. Much like the lies propagated by The Neverending Story (which did indeed end after a paltry 90 minutes!) before it, The Final Terror is not what the title proclaims. I mean, there have been like hundreds of horror films made after this movie came out (in 1983)—some even have “terror” in the title!
Well, I guess the best thing...

Southern Comfort
Stars: Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Franklyn Seales, T.K. Carter, Lewis Smith, Peter Coyote, Alan Autry, Brion James, Sonny Landham | Written by Michael Kane, Walter Hill, David Giler | Directed by Walter Hill
There is something about Walter Hill’s style of storytelling that just gets me. I’m a big fan of The Warriors, even though it took me long enough to finally see the film. Once I finally got to see it though it turned into one of my favourite films. Southern Comfort is a film very much like The Warriors, written and directed by Hill it very much mirrors the style with a group of men out of their element and fighting for survival, though the city and the bayou are two very different “jungles”.

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time to remake an 80s classic TV show or movie with an all-new cast. This week we’re fantasizing about the once-promised, soon forgotten sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension -- Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League. (If you have a suggestion for an 80s TV show or movie we should play with, feel free to email me.) It’s one of my very favorite movies, and the missing sequel is one of the lost movie I most long for. And with the 25th anniversary of the original film’s release coming up this summer, it seems like the perfect time to think about another installment. The original cast included (I’m listing only characters here who could appear in the sequel): Buckaroo Banzai: Peter Weller Penny Priddy: Ellen Barkin Reno Nevada: Pepe Serna...
