A lot of stuff got left on the cutting room floor when Warner Bros. started adapting the "Harry Potter" books into blockbuster movies, the first of which, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (or "Philosopher's Stone" if you don't live in the United States), hit theaters in November 2001. This was followed by the release of "Chamber of Secrets" in 2002, and when the third novel, "Prisoner of Azkaban," was adapted two years later, fans of the books were probably excited to learn a little more about the backstory of Harry's (played by Daniel Radcliffe in the films) father, James Potter (played by Adrian Rawlins as an adult in the films), whose death, along with that of his wife and Harry's mother Lily (played by Geraldine Somerville as an adult in the films), sets Harry's story in motion before the narrative even begins. Those fans would have been bitterly disappointed, though!

In the "Harry Potter" books — and the film franchise they spawned — Harry, played on-screen by Daniel Radcliffe, faces off against a number of different villains and antagonists. None of them loom quite as large as Voldemort, though. Originally named Tom Marvolo Riddle and played, after he regains corporeal form in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," by Ralph Fiennes, the Dark Lord was one of the most feared and evil wizards in the entire wizarding world ... Until he got his butt kicked by a baby. Let me explain.
Before the proper narrative of "Harry Potter" even gets going, Voldemort takes it upon himself to "visit" the Potter family home in the sleepy wizarding hamlet of Godric's Hollow so that he can murder the trio, including baby Harry and his parents James (Adrian Rawlins) and Lily (Geraldine Somerville). So, why does Voldemort attempt infanticide and murder two people in the process?...

In September, Warner Bros. posted a casting call for the three lead child actors to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron in the new Harry Potter reboot. Over 32,000 audition tapes were sent in, including some very interesting ones.
Per the Daily Mail, a 42-year-old man tried his chance to get an audition to play Hermione Granger. The casting agents are reportedly going through thousands of audition tapes daily, and the lead roles' age limit was between 9 and 11. The man was not successful in his bid to become the new Hermione Granger, after Emma Watson played the role in the original films.

HBO's Harry Potter show will start filming next summer, and expansions from the books could be afoot

The other day, select journalists got to see sneak peaks of some new shows heading to HBO, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and the second season of The Last of Us. Executives also revealed that HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV show would start filming in the summer of 2025, which puts it on track for a late 2026 or 2027 release.
Obviously, the Harry Potter show is a big deal for the network. The books by J.K. Rowling are still beloved and the movies modern classics. Per Variety, the show "had auditioned 32,000 kids to play the lead roles," which I assume means characters like Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, three kids who become friends while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The casting team is reportedly reviewing between 500 and 1,000 audition tapes per day. This sounds insane, but if you don't cast those roles correctly, you don't have a show,...

Sophie Skelton is a fan favorite as Brianna Fraser on the Starz drama Outlander, but fans are hoping to see her pop up in another iconic franchise.
Many Harry Potter fans have named Sophie as their top choice to play the Boy Who Lived’s mom, Lily Potter (née Evans), in a new series.
Lucky for fans, Sophie doesn’t seem totally opposed to the idea, and she has some theories herself about why Potterheads want to see her as Harry Potter’s mom.

When books are being adapted into a live-action medium, it is only natural that some changes will be made to better tell a story. When the Harry Potter films first began to take shape, it was only natural that a similar approach was taken with them. Although J.K. Rowling made most of the decisions that were taken in the films, some choices ended up being quite controversial among the fandom.

Be it Dumbledore’s reaction to Harry putting his name in the Goblet of Fire or Ginny Weasley’s character, certain changes have been poorly received by its viewers over the years. One of the lesser talked about decisions still ended up impacting characters in a very significant way. Thankfully, HBO’s upcoming reboot could easily fix this.

Enjoying the Harry Potter TV show will mean finally understanding why minor characters like Bill Weasley and Oliver Wood are so important. The Harry Potter series' cultural impact is undeniable, but the TV show has a chance to fill in the gaps left by the original films. Characters like Peeves and Madam Poppy Pomfrey had significant roles in the books, and the TV show should give them the recognition they deserve.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV show has the opportunity to include some brilliant minor characters that the original films failed to focus on. Harry Potter is one of the most influential franchises of modern times. The books inspired a new generation to read, and the movies earned a place in audiences' hearts. However, like every movie adaptation of a beloved book series, Harry Potter didn't come without its mistakes. Some of the changes and directorial choices in the Harry Potter movies divided fans and are still a topic of heavy discussion today, like the change in Harry Potter's eye color, or how the Polyjuice Potion works.

Petunia and Lily had only been out of contact for about 3 years when Lily died, contradicting the movies' implication of a longer estrangement. Petunia being younger in the books changes her character and adds perspective to her hatred towards the wizarding world. Interestingly, Snape and Petunia share a common connection of regret over how they treated Lily, leading to their despising of Harry Potter.
The conflicted relationship between Lily and Petunia has always been sad, but a book detail that the Harry Potter movies changed makes it far more tragic. The sisters had been at odds with one other ever since they learned that Lily was a witch, and the series' first book revealed that they hadn't talked in the years leading up to Lily Potter's death. From start to finish, the Harry Potter films are full of wondrous magic, strong friendships, and traumatic death scenes. The popular franchise may have a young audience, but that doesn't stop it from killing off characters constantly. From the murder of James (Adrian Rawlins) and Lily Potter (Geraldine Somerville) that started it all to the tragic losses in the Battle of Hogwarts, the story, like Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe) life, is shaped by the death and destruction the Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) causes. Each of these tragedies is uniquely impactful, but some deaths are more difficult to watch than others. Though it has fierce competition, among the many examples Harry Potter has to offer, no death hits as hard as the final moments of Dobby (Toby Jones), the free House Elf.

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.

Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

Filmmaker Joe Weiland’s directorial debut Gorka is a short comedy drama about Gorka, a French exchange student who has arrived in the UK to see what England has to offer. Quickly, however, upon his arrival, his plans of exploration are pushed to the wayside as the English family he’s been partnered with experience a major tragedy. It’s from here on out that Weiland’s film takes off and his portrayal of the importance of human connection during strange, dysfunctional times begins. Weiland brings a buoyant Britishness to his short, which showcases the title character’s world through bright-coloured, open frames as he takes in the odd seaside environment that is Bognor Regis. As the film sets sail for its festival run, which kicks off with the Oscar-qualifying Provincetown Film Festival, Dn caught up with Weiland to talk over the personal genesis of the short, his background studying screenwriting at AFI,...

At least twenty fine actors and stars make Robert Altman’s period piece about a party in a big English country house into a gala occasion. The show is also a fascinating entree into a classed world of masters and servants. The drama of manners could also be described as a mystery who-dunnit. Either way, we’re floored by excellent work from a stellar cast.

Goodbye Christopher Robin is a film that tells the story behind the creation of the beloved characters of Winnie The Pooh. It follows the lives of author A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) as they raise their son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston). It looks like a wonderful imaginative film that is beautifully shot. It's set after World War I and follows the family as they find fame and success with Pooh. At the core, this is a father and son story.
The movie was directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn, Woman in Gold) and today we have the first trailer for you to watch. But first, here's the official synopsis:

We’ve seen many variations of the animated Winnie the Pooh, but now he’s coming to life in a new feature — or more precisely, how he came to life is captured. Directed by Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn, Woman in Gold), the first trailer has landed today ahead of a fall release.

“Finding Neverland” turned the creation of “Peter Pan” into an Oscar-nominated drama back in 2004, and Fox Searchlight is surely hoping that’s the case for its upcoming A.A. Milne biopic. The author created the children’s classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and he’ll be the subject of the untitled drama that will also focus on the coming-of-age of Milne’s son, Christopher Robbin. Fox Searchlight has announced production is officially underway in Oxfordshire, Surrey, East Sussex and London, and some new first look photos have debuted on USA Today to mark the occasion.

Winnie the Pooh has seen a number of iterations over the years, but now he’s getting his own biopic of sorts. More precisely, it follows author A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) as they raise their son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston). Once titled Goodbye Christopher Robin and currently going by the hopefully soon-to-be-changed The Untitled A.A. Milne Project, the first images have now arrived.
Scripted by Frank Cottrell Boyce and Simon Vaughn, the film explores the Milne family as they encounter fame following World War I and specifically the father-son relationship at the center. With production kicking off in London, Fox Searchlight has the distribution rights, which we imagine they’ll take advantage of for a 2017 release.
Check out the new images above and below (via The Telegraph) for what should make a fine double feature with Alex Ross Perry’s upcoming film.

'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

Sam Strike's first TV role since leaving EastEnders has been revealed by BBC One.
The former soap star will appear in the upcoming 19th series of Silent Witness opposite Emilia Fox in a guest role.
He will play David Hamilton, the son of Tony (Dean Andrews) and Lydia (Geraldine Somerville). David has held his family together while his father was in prison, and has sacrificed going to university to look after his parents following a family tragedy.
Strike said of his role: 'I'm a fan of Silent Witness, so when the opportunity arose to be a part of it, I jumped at the chance.
"I really admire David Drury as a director, so to work with him is very exciting. It's always great to play a character outside of your comfort zone, especially on a platform as successful as Silent Witness."

Nicole Kidman embodies silver screen icon Grace Kelly as she leaves her life as an actress behind in the new international trailer for Grace of Monaco. The Weinstein Company still hasn't set a domestic release date yet, after pushing the film from its November 2013 release date last year. Director Olivier Dahan's drama explores Grace Kelly's marriage to Monaco's Prince Ranier III, and how she helped solve a dispute over French tax laws in the 1960s, but as we can see in this trailer, the actress still pines for her former profession, with a reference to Alfred Hitchcock offering her the lead role in Marnie in 1962. In addition, we have the new poster for this drama, co-starring Milo Ventimiglia, Tim Roth, Parker Posey, Paz Vega and Frank Langella.

‘Grace of Monaco’ U.S. March release canceled as biopic starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly to open 2014 Cannes Film Festival (photo: Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in ‘Grace of Monaco’) Directed by Olivier Dahan, and starring Nicole Kidman as Oscar-winning Hollywood actress-turned-European princess Grace Kelly, Grace of Monaco was to have been a (possibly) strong Oscar 2014 contender — at least in the Best Actress category. After all, Dahan had guided 2007 Best Actress Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose; Nicole Kidman is a respected actress with one Academy Award win (for Stephen Daldry’s The Hours) and two nominations (Moulin Rouge!, Rabbit Hole); and, last but certainly not least, Grace of Monaco was to have been released in North America by the Oscar-savvy The Weinstein Company. However, Harvey Weinstein was reportedly unhappy with Olivier Dahan’s final cut, and demanded that Grace of Monaco be reedited.

The Weinstein Company has bumped its potential Oscar contender Grace of Monaco from its November 27, 2013 release date into an unspecified date in the spring of 2014. Insiders claim that the studio needs more time to complete the drama, which will now be positioned as more of a commercial entry instead of awards-season bait. Of course, the film could still be in contention for the 2014 awards season, although it will be more difficult with a spring release date.
Nicole Kidman stars as Hollywood icon Grace Kelly, who gave up her film career after marrying Monaco's Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth). The story also centers on how the starlet used her fame and influence to help solve a dispute between France and Monaco, as well as her marital problems and issues with her identity.

Olivier Dahan‘s upcoming biopic Grace of Monaco has our full attention mostly because Nicole Kidman is already on board to star as Grace Kelly. But that’s about to change, because we’ve just learned that Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Robert Lindsay and Geraldine Somerville have joined the whole thing as well!
The good thing is that this movie is currently shooting in France, so I guess we’ll soon have more material to share with you. But, at this moment, let’s have a few words about the new cast members.

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new.
