For this Phantom Limbs, we’ll be uncovering George A. Romero’s Goosebumps, a feature film adaptation of the popular line of children’s horror novels written by R.L. Stine. Based on that series’ first book, Welcome to Dead House, Romero’s film would have expanded upon Stine’s tale while tweaking its central threat, all while keeping the scares family friendly. While the film sadly went unproduced (and the book would go on to be adapted for the Goosebumps television series in the late 90s), Romero nevertheless penned a full screenplay for the project, which more than illustrates his approach for an “all ages” horror film.
In researching this article, your writer paid a visit to the George A. Romero Archival Collection at the University of Pittsburgh Library System, which houses numerous works from the late horror legend, including produced and unproduced screenplays, treatments, artwork, correspondence, props, posters and more!

Windmill Theatre Company play Beep is being adapted into a mixed-media series for ABC Kids, with production underway in Adelaide.
Produced by Windmill Pictures, Beep and Mort tells the story of two best friends from different worlds, solving their daily dilemmas and unexpected challenges through invention, play and adventure.
The series, aimed at pre-schoolers, is designed by Jonathon Oxlade and directed by Rosemary Myers, both of whom worked on the 2016 film Girl Asleep and several Windmill live shows, including the recent stage adaptation of Bluey.
The writing team consists of Charlotte Rose Hamlyn, Simon Butters, Amy Stewart, Hunter Page-Lochard, Wendy Hanna, and Lorin Clarke.
Myers said the creative development of the series drew on the concept’s theatrical roots while also integrating new technologies.
“The result is a contemporary hybrid form of puppetry that blends hand and rod puppets with post animated object puppets,” she said.

Two animated children’s projects and two live-action series will share in $3.2 million of production funding from Screen Australia.
Northern Pictures’ Tom Weekly Versus… and Werner Film Productions’ Surviving Summer are being made for ViacomCBS and Netflix, respectively, while animation offerings 100% Wolf: The Book of Hath from Flying Bark Productions and Kangaroo Beach Summer Special from Cheeky Little Media will both appear on the ABC.
Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said the funding reflected Screen Australia’s commitment to supporting quality Australian screen stories for young audiences.
“It’s important that Australian kids can see their stories and experiences reflected on screen and families around the country will be in for a treat with these new projects,” she said.
“Northern Pictures are going from strength to strength – building on the success of Hardball, they are now set to bring popular book series Tom Weekly to the screen.

After an Emmy win and both local and international success with Hardball, Northern Pictures is developing a new children’s project with one of its creators, Guy Edmonds.
Titled Dance Spies, the live-action series follows the exploits of a group of teens in a dance school as they secretly train in the art of espionage. To be the best dance spies they can be, they’ll juggle dance assessments and personal differences with epic espionage and in the field ops.
The project is being co-developed with Canadian production and distribution company Sinking Ship Entertainment.
Edmonds got the idea after watching a multitude of dance series with his two young daughters.
“The more I watched these shows, and I’ve watched a billion of them, something occurred to me… The dance world is ruthless. To be a hero in it you need to be tough as nails, uber disciplined and a top shelf athlete.

‘Hardball.’
Northern Pictures’ Hardball has been nominated for an International Emmy Kids Award, one of four competing in the Kids: Live Action category.
So that is more acclaim for the ABC-commissioned comedy which won two prizes in June: The Prix Jeunesse International Award for the world’s best fiction program for 7-10-year-olds, and the Rockie Award for the Best Children and Youth Fiction Series at the Banff World Media Festival in Canada.
Created and written by Matt Zeremes and Guy Edmonds and produced by Joe Weatherstone, Hardball centres on Mikey and his dream to become the ‘sweetest-bestest-acest’ handball champ in Western Sydney.
The international distributor the Australian Children’s Television Foundation sold the show last month to the BBC kids’ channel Cbbc after earlier deals with France Televisions (France), Nrk (Norway), Rte (Ireland), Tvo (Canada), Tfo (Canada), Tvb (Hong Kong), Rtp (Portugal), Rtv (Slovenia), and Sabc (South Africa).

(L-r) Ingrid Rowell, Pearl Tan and Tara O’Connell (Photo credit: Cassie Bedford).
Pearl Tan juggles so many roles – writer, director, teacher, PhD student, occasional ABC radio presenter and inclusivity activist – it’s surprising she hasn’t cloned herself.
The filmmaker’s day job as senior lecturer in directing at the Australian Film Television and Radio School gives her time to pursue extra-curricular projects as well as studying part-time for her PhD at the University of New South Wales.
Currently she is developing with creator/writer Amy Stewart and producer Kala Ellis Return to Sender, an online satire about two estranged, mixed-raced sisters.
The project won the inaugural Screen Australia/VidCon pitching competition Pitcher Perfect staged at VidCon in Melbourne last September. The creative team is using the $30,000 prize to craft a proof-of-concept.

Were you aware, my little particle men and blue canaries-in-the-outlet-by-the-light-switch, that today is They Might Be Giants Awareness Day? Today's modern woman is expected to balance a successful career, a healthy family life, and a thrilling social agenda, all while looking fabulous—at least, that's what the magazine covers would like us to believe. In reality, balancing work, family, and social obligations is much more of a harried juggling act. The decision to start a family while pursuing a career as an actor can be doubly tricky. Unlike other professions, an actor's work is often contingent on physical appearance. After years of paying dues, many actors may be hesitant to begin a family while holding out for greater success and the financial security it could bring. But it's a Catch-22. When the big break arrives, there may not be time to start a family. How does the modern actor have her cake and eat it too while preparing for a new addition to the family? Los Angeles actor Michelle Gunn faced this very dilemma.
