Many filmmakers making their feature debut opt to tell a story inspired — at least in part — by their life. Although this has brought about some incredible films, others feel like complete ego trips. Tracie Laymon’s Bob Trevino Likes It is uncharacteristically humble for this genre, telling its story in a way that perfectly balances humor and humanity, allowing it to overcome its somewhat simplistic storytelling and be genuinely moving.
The film follows a young woman who finds an unexpected connection on Facebook with a man sharing her father’s name after falling out with her real father. Although this sounds like it could make a stranger-than-fiction story, Laymon’s approach doesn’t lean into this absurdity. Instead, it takes the form of a mostly low-key, pretty maudlin, but very effective indie dramedy.

Writer-director Tracie Laymon has a lot of Bobs in her life.
First, there was Bob Laymon, her father.
“In 2012, I was looking for my dad,” she says. “He would just feel disrespected for even the most minor infractions, and he’d disappear for a year or two and not talk to me. So I put his name into Facebook and saw this little tiny picture. I friended him and woke up to ‘Bob Laymon likes it.’ I was like, ‘My dad likes something of mine! We’re back! It’s gonna be okay.'”
It wasn’t okay yet. This was a second Bob Laymon.
“It was a stranger in Wichita, Kansas,” Laymon says, “who continued to be more fatherly to me than my dad ever was — he filled the void. He had such access to my heart because of his name. My dad never wrote me happy birthday, but...

Exclusive: Ahead of the SXSW debut of her first solo feature Bob Trevino Likes It, filmmaker Tracie Laymon has taken on new management at Artists First.
Premiering in Narrative Feature Competition on March 9th, Laymon’s dramedy follows a people-pleasing young woman (Barbie Ferreira) who sends her estranged and curmudgeonly father (French Stewart) a Facebook friend request, only to unwittingly befriend a grieving man with the same name (John Leguizamo). She wrote, directed, and produced the pic, which draws heavily from her own life and also stars Lauren “Lolo” Spencer and Rachel Bay Jones.
A Texas native, Laymon spent some of her formative teen years in Russia before returning to the States for college, where she began directing short films. Since then, her directorial projects have won numerous accolades, including a jury prize at SXSW and Best Director awards at Women Texas Film Festival, the Seattle Film Festival, and The Method Fest in Beverly Hills.

The final comedic performance by James Caan in "Queen Bees" reunites him with Ellen Burstyn, marking a 24-year reunion since their last appearance together in a 2000 crime drama. "Queen Bees" has gained recent popularity on Netflix, currently ranking in the top 3 movies in the United States on the streaming platform. The cast of "Queen Bees" features several other reunions, including Jane Curtin and French Stewart from "3rd Rock from the Sun" and Ann-Margret and Christopher Lloyd from "Going in Style."
The final comedic performance by legendary actor James Caan in Queen Bees quietly marked a cast reunion nearly a quarter-century after their box office flop. Caan, who sadly passed away in 2022, appeared in dozens of classic dramas and comedies ranging from The Godfather as Sonny Corleone to Elf as Walter Hobbs, Buddy's dad. "Queen Bees" is a romantic comedy film set in a retirement community, starring James Caan as Dan Simpson. The movie follows the story of Helen, played by Ellen Burstyn, who finds companionship and love with Dan. "Queen Bees" was James Caan's final film before he died in 2022.
Queen Bees chronicles the lives of senior citizens living in the Pine Grove retirement community, and one of its residents is Dan Simpson, played by James Caan. The 2021 romantic comedy film, directed by Michael Lembeck and written by Donald Martin, revolves around Helen Wilson, an older woman whose daughter wants her to move into a retirement home despite Helen's desire to stay at the home she has lived at for years. However, when Helen locks herself out of the house (again), resulting in a fire that destroys the kitchen, she is forced to move into Pine Grove while it is being repaired.

The original Home Alone is a classic and remains the best in the franchise, loved for its hilarious plot and iconic booby traps. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is even better than the first film, with memorable performances and iconic moments that make it the best in the series. While the other Home Alone movies have tried to recreate the magic of the originals, most have failed to win over audiences or critics.
With the release of Home Sweet Home Alone in 2022 there are now six Home Alone movies, and there's a considerable gulf in quality between the worst and the best. 1990's Home Alone was directed by Chris Columbus and became an instant classic, with a sequel released two years later with almost all of the original cast. The hit sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun had an iconic cast of comedic legends and future stars, but what have they been up to since the show went off the air? Debuting in 1996, 3rd Rock from the Sun follows a band of extraterrestrials who arrive on Earth in order to study the ways of human beings. The series cleverly turned the classic sitcom premise on its ear and was a remarkably fresh show that fit right at the turn of the new millennium. Besides the show's clever writing, it was the cast that made 3rd Rock from the Sun a classic.
Running for an impressive six seasons on the air, 3rd Rock from the Sun featured established stars like Jane Curtin and John Lithgow while also elevating the young careers of actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and French Stewart. ABC‘s Will Trent isn’t afraid to shy away from tough subjects. And the latest challenging storyline revolves around Angie Polaski coming face-to-face with her past demons. French Stewart first appeared as Lenny Broussard, Angie’s former foster parent, in Will Trent Season 1 Episode 9. And it looks like he’s here to stay for a while.

The NBC comedy Alf may have been something that could only happen in the ‘80s. Alf, short for Alien Life Form, was a puppet with the voice of creator Paul Fusco. His Melmac name was Gordon Shumway. Anyway, the idea of building a family sitcom around a stuffed character is something they probably wouldn’t do today. But, if you grew up on Alf or just discovered it on Peacock, Freevee, Shout TV, Crackle, Tubi, Vudu, Fubo or Roku Channel, there are a few other shows that deliver similarly oddball comedy.

What's more unbelievable than a sitcom about four aliens who land on Earth and assume human identities to study life on the planet? Add the fact that the human incarnations of these aliens don't exactly correspond with their identities (e.g. one extraterrestrial is a male trapped in a woman's body). This is the premise for the NBC's '90s hit show "3rd Rock from the Sun." This premise alone is so outrageous that if your suspension of disbelief isn't challenged by it, anything that happens on the show shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility, right? Well -- if you can believe it -- one of the show's biggest challenges was keeping its stories believable.
The aliens-in-residence are the Solomon family: Dick (John Lithgow), Sally (Kristen), Harry (French Stewart), and Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Each episode, the foursome gets embroiled in hijinks and wacky, slapstick scenarios as they try to fit in with society.

It's common for any long-running television sitcom to eventually "jump the shark." But to do it in 3D? That takes some real moonstones, and the cast of "3rd Rock from the Sun" did it in sublime fashion.
After its first season, "3rd Rock from the Sun" was nominated for three Emmys, with star John Lithgow winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. By the show's second season, that number increased to eight nominations and five wins, including a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Despite the early success of the show, NBC decided that the final episode of season 2 needed to be big -- so big that they brought in film director Phil Joanou to direct 16 minutes of 3D sequences for a two-episode special entitled "A Nightmare on Dick Street, Parts I & II."
Although the show was known for its eccentric nature, the creative team didn't share NBC's enthusiasm over the idea.

When the creators of the '90s NBC sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" developed the idea about an alien family posing as humans on earth, they did so with the hopes of casting John Lithgow as its central protagonist, Dick Solomon. Lithgow got on board, breaking his own biggest rule in Hollywood, which was to never do a sitcom. "The thing I disliked about the idea of doing a sitcom was that they would – that's all you would be able to do," he told the Los Angeles Times. "People would only think of you that way. The way Carroll O'Connor could never escape Archie Bunker, as great a character actor as he was."
Some of Lithgow's peers may have something to say about this. Courtney Cox earned her fame from playing Monica Geller on the sitcom "Friends" while she simultaneously established herself as an iconic figure in the horror...

In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, John Lithgow revealed that his fans remember him most from the '90s NBC sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun," on which his played the screwball Dick Solomon, the leader of a group of four extraterrestrials posing as a family of humans in the fictional city of Rutherford, Ohio. Even more than 20 years later, people on the street still ask him to do that popular alien salute. "[3rd Rock from the Sun] exploded my career," he said. "It exploded everybody's expectations of me. Nobody had seen me do that nonsense before, except for if they happened to remember the three times that I hosted "Saturday Night Live" way back in the '80s." With the help of his co-stars Kristen Johnston, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lithgow snagged three Emmy Awards during the show's six-season run.
But the "Dexter" villain initially focused his career on theater and film.

As sitcom premises go, Bonnie and Terry Turner's ultra-popular sci-fi sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" is first rate. The show follows a quartet of nonhumanoid space aliens from a distant galaxy -- played by John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt -- who have disguised themselves as a human family in order to study our species up close. The show's comedy is derived from their utter cluelessness about the way the people in Ohio behave. "3rd Rock from the Sun" came in a long tradition of silly sci-fi sitcoms that included "Out of the World," "Alf," "Aliens in the Family," and "They Came from Outer Space." These were shows that took familiar American sitcom tropes, and skewered them by putting aliens in place of traditionally human characters.

A love story set in a retirement home is a sweet premise, and when you stack the cast with greats like Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, Jane Curtin, Ann-Margret, Christopher Lloyd, and Loretta DeVine, greatness is expected. But in director MIchael Lembeck’s “Queen Bees,” the overly simplistic nature of the script becomes both pragmatic and detrimental, never allowing any character the depth they are owed while providing just enough of a formulaic plot, one that asks nothing more than for you to enjoy the ensemble.
Helen (Burstyn) is an independent woman in her 80s whose daughter Laura and grandson Peter are getting worried about her living alone. The matriarch constantly refuses her daughter’s suggestions about moving into a nearby retirement community until the day Helen accidentally sets her kitchen on fire. She finally agrees to live in the retirement community, for one month, until her home repairs are completed.

There will always been a place in the world for older-skewing movies as pleasant as “Queen Bees,” a lightweight but likable comedy set primarily in a retirement community where close friendships are forged — sometimes reluctantly, sometimes immediately — and autumnal romance can blossom. For years, their natural habitat has been bargain-matinee multiplex screenings, where over-50 ticketbuyers might attend solo, in groups or accompanied by children and/or grandchildren. More recently, viewing options have expanded to include the modern miracle of VOD. But any way you look at it, director Michael Lembeck’s indie offering is bound to please nearly anyone in its target demographic who isn’t easily offended by unmistakable indications that, as the old saying goes, although there’s snow on the roof, fire can still burn in the hearth.

“Mom” will end its run on CBS this year at the conclusion of Season 8, Variety has learned.
That means that the season finale currently scheduled for May 6 will now serve as the series finale. The show had been renewed for Seasons 7 and 8 in early 2019. News of the show’s conclusion comes after series co-lead Anna Farris departed the multi-cam sitcom ahead of Season 8.
“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at The White House regarding the opioid crisis,...

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.
This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.
Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

3rd Rock From the Sun was a solid hit over six seasons in the late 1990s, in no small part due to the cast. The main roster was made up of John Lithgow, Kristen Johnston, French Stewart, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jane Curtin. But what made this show work was the incredible group of guest stars.

When you look back at surprise TV hits from the 1990s, 3rd Rock From the Sun has to be near the top of that list. It's the story of four offbeat aliens who take human form and settle down in Ohio to research humanity. The cast featured legends like John Lithgow and Jane Curtin, alongside fresh faces such as Kristen Johnston, French Stewart, and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The over-the-top antics of the aliens combined with Stooge-like physical comedy made the series a hit for six seasons. But all good things must come to an end, and sometimes that's for the best. Here's five reasons it should have ended when it did, and five reasons it could have gone on.

Forbidden Zone director Richard Elfman pulls a movie with the key to the universe out of his butt in Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks.
In the pantheon of cult movies, Forbidden Zone stands at high midnight. Richard Elfman's 1980 Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo vehicle was a one-of-a-kind film careening down on a one-way street to an oddly predestined end. On the clock of Midnight Movies, his upcoming Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks runs sometime after 3 a.m., striking after the popcorn has been swept under the seats by the night crew. Independent to its core and featuring Austin Powers' Verne Troyer in his last role, the movie cannot be brushed aside by the barrage of blockbusters. Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens & Geeks is the antidote to mainstream and a breakneck cure for the run-of-the-mill.
Shot in a fast-paced, classic screen-comedy style, the film is intra-dimensional, extraterrestrial and sonically grounded.

Deadly Class brings things to a head between Marcus and Chester, but fate also has things in store for Maria and Master Lin.

Deadly Class Season 1 Episode 7
Brushing aside the indulgent level of violence in Deadly Class — it is a show about assassins after all — reveals a surprisingly rich thematic tapestry underneath, and this is really the first week where the struggle between free will and predestination took center stage in almost every storyline to great effect. Even with Willie’s, whose momentary respite in this episode was a welcome diversion from the struggles elsewhere, explored the idea of fate with aplomb. Besides the overly convenient circumstances of the confrontation with Chester, this week’s installment expertly showed what happens when assassins of varying stripes try to “Rise Above” their callings as the episode title suggests.
Opening with the animated sequence was quite an eye-opener per usual.
