The gloves came off on The Daily Show on Monday night, as host Jon Stewart excoriated the news media for its overly extensive and at times incredibly dramatic coverage of Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial.
In the segment, titled “America’s Most Tremendously Wanted,” Stewart began by saying that “this trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system. But it’s also a test that of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way. A task they have acknowledged that they’ve performed poorly in the past.”
Stewart then proceeded to show clips of somber media self-reflection, from the likes of former CNN host Brian Stelter, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace, Rachel Maddow and more over, of the need to move away from the often breathless, speculative and needless coverage Trump received during his term as president.
“So brave.

Jon Stewart surprised his audience and viewers at home Monday when his critique of recent over-the-top cable news coverage of the Trump Trial was interrupted by former Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams.
“Jessica! How are you? Are you down at the courthouse to give us a report?”
“Uh, yeah, I am,” replied Williams. And here’s my report: Jon Stewart hates fun.”
Stewart, who struggled to keep it together during Williams’ appearance Monday night seemed genuinely tickled to be working with her again. The two appeared to go off-script at least a couple times, with Stewart at one point exclaiming “I’ve missed you terribly,” and Williams saying the same.
The former correspondent sang Stewart’s praises in a 2023 interview with People Magazine in which she called him “one of the best bosses ever.”
“A lot of things made Jon a great boss, but he’s just a nice man...

There were only two late-night hosts on duty in a week when opening arguments in Donald Trump’s election interference trial began. Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel alone, therefore, were left to apply their signature takes to the official start of the first-ever criminal trial for a former U.S. President, one which not only hinges on Trump’s alleged affair with (and subsequent hush money payment to) adult film actress Stormy Daniels, but where the first witness to be called will be the former National Enquirer publisher and Trump pal whose name happens to be David Pecker. (Who is alleged to have both planted fake stories about Trump opponents and bought and buried stories damning to Trump.)

Jon Stewart led Monday’s episode of The Daily Show with Donald Trump’s hush money trial and dinged news networks for how they cover it.
“This trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system, but it’s also a test of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way. A task they have acknowledged they’ve performed poorly in the past,” Stewart said before a supercut of the media claiming they had learned their lesson on how to cover Trump.
The supercut included clips from all major cable news networks like CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Stewart mocked the network’s personalities, adding, “I think from this trial we will see the seeds of that introspection bear fruit, or we will learn that learning curves are for pussies.”

According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data for the week of April 15, 2024, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show averaged 477,000 total viewers and 97,000 P18-49. That’s a slight gain in total viewers (+0.2%), but a -20% loss in P18-49 viewers from the show’s most-recent week of original episodes (week of April 8).
Jon Stewart’s Monday, April 15 episode, his ninth as The Daily Show Monday host, averaged 742,000 total viewers and 111,000 P18-49 live-plus-same-day viewers; his largest total audience in three weeks, but his smallest P18-49 audience to-date. Stephen Colbert closed out Los Angeles’ annual PaleyFest TV festival Sunday afternoon, as he sat down for a conversation with comedian Ben Schwartz about his career and time at The Late Show desk.
During the wide-ranging chat inside the Dolby Theatre — which ranged from Colbert’s start in Chicago’s improv scene to his stint as a Sunday school teacher and his love of fantasy films — Schwartz asked the host if he would ever want to return to acting, for which he went to school.
“I was purely acting up until I had The Late Show,” Colbert recalled, as he had been in character on The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. “One of the weirdest things about taking the job is my manager, James ‘Babydoll’ Dixon, when he said, ‘Hey, it’s you.’ And I went, ‘Me?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, do you want to do it?’ And I’m like,...

Stephen Colbert is taking “The Late Show” on the road.
The late-night program will broadcast live from Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre during this year’s Democratic National Convention, also taking place in Chicago, from Aug. 19-22 on the CBS Television Network. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” will also be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.
Colbert announced the news on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show.”
“I lived in Chicago for 11 years, and it holds a special place in my heart — and not because of all the Polish sausage lodged in my aorta,” Colbert said. “Chicago is where I cut my teeth performing at the Second City, and it’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter. Last night’s Jon Stewart-led Daily Show delivered mixed results in the Nielsen ratings department. The April 15 episode delivered week-to-week gains in total viewers, but lost viewers in the key 18-49 demo.
Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, The Daily Show averaged 742,000 total viewers this past Monday at 11 p.m. Et. That represents an +11% improvement from the previous Monday episode, and Stewart’s largest Monday audience in three weeks. However, last night’s episode averaged just 111,000 P18-49 viewers, which is -13% from the previous Monday, and Stewart’s smallest P18-49 audience since returning to the program this past February.
The total viewer and P18-49 averages for April 15 are far from final. Stewart’s Monday, April 8 episode averaged 671,000 total live-plus-same-day linear viewers, and improved to 1,430,000 total linear viewers on Comedy Central after Nielsen live-plus-three-day data arrived. That’s more than a +100% improvement in total viewers.

The View hosts kicked off their segment in the usual way Tuesday, covering the latest major headlines with fiery exchanges. Only this time, the matter that captivated them the most in their first “Hot Topics” session was the reporting that Donald Trump fell asleep during the first day of his criminal trial in New York. To mark the occasion, the cohosts filed out onto the stage to the tune of Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” with Whoopi Goldberg explaining, “Yesterday was the first day of You Know Who’s hush money trial, and among the many reports coming out of the courtroom is that You Know Who could not keep his eyes open.” They then reviewed one of the many, many hilarious late-night host’s takes on the same story: Jon Stewart’s line from The Daily Show Monday night. “Imagine doing so many crimes that...

After his legal team tried literally every desperate gambit to delay, recuse, deny, and otherwise make it go away, Donald Trump’s criminal trial on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records to hide hush money to a porn star commenced on Monday. And while the first day was spent largely on the arduous task of finding twelve human beings not already nauseatingly familiar with Trump’s alleged adulterous dalliance with adult film actress Stormy Daniels and the ensuing election year coverup (which has already seen Trump’s longtime fixer Michael Cohen go to prison), the news is already not great for the former President and multiple defendant.

Jon Stewart mocked Donald Trump on The Daily Show as the former Potus campaigns and makes a run for the White House amid the hush money criminal trial.
“Our former president and illustrious historian, Donald J. Trump, spoke near one of America’s most hallowed battlefields,” Stewart said on the Comedy Central show. “And if you thought Lincoln consecrated Gettysburg with his soaring rhetoric… Well, buckle up.”
Stewart cut to a Trump rally where the former president incoherently talked about the Battle of Gettysburg, saying, “What an unbelievable, I mean, it was so much and so interesting and so vicious and horrible, and it’s so beautiful in so many different ways. It represented such a big portion of the success of this country. Gettysburg, wow.”

We've already had one movie this year about an imaginary friend turning out to be not so fictional, and causing chaos in Blumhouse's Imaginary. That didn't exactly impress, so would it have been better if Ryan Reynolds had shown up to announce he was tasting gummy bear farts with his eyeballs? Maybe… but it probably wouldn't have seemed as scary. Still, writer/director John Krasinski is more going for family friendly fun with If, and the final trailer does indeed feature candy fart/eyeball action. Check it out:
If is based on a simple and, as Krasinski has already admitted, Pixar-style idea: a girl (Cailey Fleming) discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends. Trying to figure what she can do with this ability leads her to Reynolds' Cal, whose task it is to reunite forgotten IFs with their kids — or find them new ones.

When Jon Stewart reclaimed his seat behind the The Daily Show desk in February, his once-a-week return was met with widespread excitement from those eager to recapture the magic of his original tenure, from 1999 to 2015. Writing for the Guardian, Charles Bramesco praised Stewart's "honest, critical, sane" political perspective, while LateNighter editor-at-large Bill Carter proclaimed that his Monday appearances have "re-introduced appointment viewing to late night." Showtime/MTV Entertainment boss Chris McCarthy even went so far as to hail Stewart as "the voice of our generation," describing him as "the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit."...

Last night’s episode of The Daily Show was Jon Stewart’s eighth as Monday host, but it didn’t fare particularly well from a Nielsen ratings standpoint.
Going up against TBS’ live broadcast of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament championship game (Purdue vs. UConn) didn’t exactly help matters.
The Daily Show’s April 8, 2024 episode averaged 671,000 total viewers and 127,000 P18-49 viewers at 11 p.m., according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That represents a -3% loss in total viewers and a -23% in P18-49 demo viewers relative to Stewart’s most-recent Monday, 11 p.m. episode, previously his lowest-rated since returning to The Daily Show this past February.
The above-mentioned total viewer and P18-49 numbers are far from final, however. Stewart’s Monday, April 1 episode averaged 693,000 total live-plus-same-day linear viewers, and improved to 1,670,000 total linear viewers after Nielsen live-plus-three-day data arrived. That’s more than a +100% bump in total viewers.

He’s now a late-night force to be reckoned with, but before his acclaimed sixteen year run at The Daily Show (and his triumphant return this year), there was The Jon Stewart Show–a mostly forgotten two season late-night talk show that began on MTV before it went into syndication in 1994.
In a new Daily Show behind the scenes clip from a recent audience Q&a, Stewart is asked by what he would have done differently on his first talk show..
“On the MTV program? You watched that show?” Stewart asked with mock surprise.
“My first guest was Howard Stern… He came on and he said, ‘You suck. The set looks ridiculous. You’ll be cancelled in six weeks.’”
“It was such a different kind of show,” Stewart continued. “The two guests on that first show were Howard Stern [and] a boy that ate cheese into the shape of states — who...

Jon Stewart returned to his well-worn chair to host his weekly segment of The Daily Show Monday night, and in addition to weighing in on the latest political hot topics, he also took a quick trip down memory lane, guided by one of his audience members in his “After the Cut” question and answer series. The audience member in question informed Stewart that she had been a faithful viewer of his since his early ’90s MTV show, The Jon Stewart Show, and she wondered what he might’ve done differently in retrospect. “You watched that show?!” he asked the guest incredulously. The Jon Stewart Show was a half-hour talk show hosted by the eventual Emmy-winning emcee, but at the time he was not exactly a household name. The show only came to fruition after Arsenio Hall stepped away from The Arsenio Hall Show, and it ran for just two seasons...

Who is hosting The Daily Show this week?
If you said Jon Stewart you get 25 percent credit. For the other 75 you have to know the name Michael Kosta, because he’s following Stewart’s now-regular Monday night showcase with three nights behind the Tds desk this week, a role Kosta has been handling with some frequency in recent months.
Kosta is the self-described “big, straight, white male, standing there looking solid, doesn’t look too bad in a suit,” whose first piece on air for Tds was going around New York City encountering people who mistook him for Donald Trump Jr., as various shady guys with Russian accents handed him briefcases full of cash.
A joke, of course. Kosta doesn’t really look much like Junior. For one thing he’s in better shape. He used to be a professional tennis player.
Kosta could maybe be called a “host-in-waiting,” but...

Jon Stewart took the Biden administration to task over how it deals with Israel, pointing out the stark contrast between the U.S. government response to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and that over the war in Gaza.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Stewart took a “wellness check” on the war on Gaza, adding that “as the war has grinded on, justice is beginning to look like cruelty.”
In a segment the Daily Show has dubbed “The Futile Crescent”, the host looked at the Biden administration’s recent determination to uphold a rules-based order inherent to the U.S.’s “universal values” — but only in relation to the Ukraine conflict. Using clips of President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Stewart focused on their robust condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, and in particular, their comments about Russian attempts to target and suppress the free press and weaponize food shortages against Ukrainians,...

On the “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart decided it was time for a “wellness check” on Gaza after the Israel-Hamas war reached the six-month mark Sunday.
“As the war has grinded on, justice is beginning to seem more like cruelty,” “The Daily Show” host said on Monday night. “But not to worry: America, the shining city on a hill, is on the case with our universal values.”
Stewart then pointed out that America’s values are quite inconsistent, especially when comparing the government’s response to the war in Gaza versus the war in Ukraine.
In one clip, Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Russia’s weaponization of food in Ukraine “unconscionable.”
Stewart agreed with Blinken’s description, adding: “Speaking of which, there is a literal famine in Gaza caused by the war. I assume America will also consider this unconscionable.”

Well, the total solar eclipse came and went in the run-up to each late-night show’s taping on Monday. That left those who attempted to lay blame for this week’s spate of unusual natural phenomena on the Lgbtqi community, abortion, Joe Biden, immigrants, and other people they don’t like with egg on their flushing, still earth-bound faces.

Jon Stewart called out Fox News on The Daily Show for their eclipse coverage with an immigration angle.
As North America prepared to witness the solar eclipse, Fox News warned viewers of the threat to the southern border that this represented.
“We are told that officials are bracing for higher traffic than usual and that means a real opportunity for smugglers and cartels and migrants to come right in,” Bill Hemmer said on the cable network after co-host Dana Perino said the eclipse would last about four minutes.
Stewart quipped, “Or they could just wait til nighttime.”
The Comedy Central host then questioned if there was anything Fox News couldn’t tie to immigration, mocking the anchors and saying, “This year’s cicada infestation provides perfect cover for Venezuelans.”
Later on in the show, Stewart had Christiane Amanpour as a guest who called the eclipse “beautiful.”

She’s CNN’s Chief International Anchor, hosts two shows for the cable news network, and one for PBS, but tonight Christiane Amanpour is taking her act to Comedy Central.
Amanpour is set to sit down with Jon Stewart tonight on The Daily Show. It will be her fifth time appearing on the show–she guested twice with Stewart during his initial run on the show, and appeared three times when Trevor Noah was behind the Daily Show desk.
Tonight’s show will mark Stewart’s eighth episode since returning to The Daily Show anchor desk Monday nights in February.
Stewart’s Monday nights have proven to be a huge draw for the Comedy Central series, drawing 2-3 times the number of total viewers the show was averaging last fall per live-plus-same-day Nielsen ratings (and even more in delayed viewing). According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data for the week of April 1, 2024, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show averaged 515,000 total viewers and 124,000 P18-49. That’s represents a -5% loss in total viewers, but a +14% gain in P18-49 viewers from the show’s most-recent week of original episodes (week of March 25, 2024).
Jon Stewart’s Monday, April 1 episode, his seventh as The Daily Show Monday host, averaged 693,000 total viewers and 165,000 P18-49 viewers per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That grew to 1,670,000 total viewers and 326,000 P18-49 viewers after Nielsen live-plus-three-data is taken into account. Greg Gutfeld isn’t your typical Fox News personality. But he is turning in to something that is more traditional at the Fox Corp.-backed cable outlet.
Fox News is expected to announce that it recently closed a deal with Gutfeld to extend his contract, a move that spotlights the host’s importance to the network’s operations even if he isn’t in the mold of a Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. Under the pact, Gutfeld will continue his co-hosting duties at the roundtable show “The Five” as well as his 10 p.m. program, “Gutfeld!,” a looser take on the issues of the day that marks a bid by Fox News to woo the younger TV viewers who might watch late-night programs such as “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS or “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. The third anniversary of the 10 p.m. program arrives Friday.

Last night’s episode of The Daily Show was Jon Stewart’s seventh as Monday host, but it didn’t fare particularly well from a Nielsen ratings standpoint.
The Daily Show’s April 1, 2024 episode averaged 693,000 total viewers and 165,000 P18-49 viewers at 11 p.m., according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That represents an -18% decline in total viewers but only a -1% decline in P18-49 demo viewers relative to Stewart’s most-recent Monday 11 p.m. episode, previously his lowest-rated since returning this past February.
With the 2024 men’s NCAA tournament national championship game scheduled for next Monday in primetime, one can reasonably expect another Monday ratings low for Stewart.
It should be noted that last night’s Daily Show telecast ran for 47 minutes, whereas most of Stewart’s other Monday telecasts have lasted 31-32 minutes.
Additionally, the above-mentioned total viewer and P18-49 numbers are far from final.

Jon Stewart made headlines in February when he appeared on “CBS Mornings” ahead of his return to hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and said that Apple canceled his previous talk show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” because “they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.” On the April 1 episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart went into greater detail about Apple’s concerns over the direction of his now-axed talk show and corresponding podcast.
Stewart was interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan on “The Daily Show” and told her that he once pitched to have her as a guest on “The Problem” podcast. Considering Khan’s work at the FTC targets tech giants’ monopolistic practices, Apple allegedly did not want Stewart bringing her on the program to presumably talk about such topics.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan has some powerful enemies.
While discussing Khan’s work taking on tech monopolies with Jon Stewart on Monday night’s Daily Show, Stewart shared that he’d originally planned to interview the FTC chair on the podcast for his Apple TV+ series The Problem With Jon Stewart–until his bosses there asked him not to.
Nominated by President Biden to the FTC in 2021 when she was just 31 years old, Khan is best known for her work in antitrust and competition law. Under her leadership, the Commission has launched several high-profile lawsuits against tech giants Microsoft, Meta and Amazon.
“I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it,” Stewart told Khan Monday.
“They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her,’” he continued. “Like, what is that sensitivity? Why are they so afraid to even have these conversations out in the public sphere?...

Jon Stewart has revealed that Apple asked him not to talk to the Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan on his former Apple TV+ show and podcast, The Problem With Jon Stewart.
Khan was a guest on Monday’s episode of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, and Stewart made the admission during the interview. When the discussion moved on to artificial intelligence, Stewart told Khan that he had wanted to talk to her on The Problem.
“I’ve got to tell you, I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it, to have you. They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her,'” Stewart said. “I don’t think they cared for you,” he then joked.

Last month, the U.S. Justice Department and more than a dozen state attorneys general sued Apple, claiming that the tech giant has an illegal monopoly over the smartphone market and warning that Apple’s monopoly on smartphones could extend to other areas of the economy, including entertainment.
Tonight on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart offered a view into his own tussle with Apple related to his Apple TV+ comedy show The Problem With Jon Stewart.
“I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it,” the Daily Show host said to his guest, Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, referencing the podcast that was an extension of the Apple show, which the tech giant canceled in October.

Jon Stewart started off The Daily Show by calling out news networks for their reaction to the video Donald Trump shared that showed an A.I. image of Joe Biden tied up.
“As many of you are aware, the news has been pretty bleak recently — the past 200-300 years,” Stewart said. “But this weekend, there was one story that was so disturbing, so dark, even the news couldn’t handle it.”
Stewart then cut to a variety of clips from news networks warning viewers they would not be able to show the video and image because it was too “disturbing.”
“I didn’t get to see it at all,” Stewart joked.
He continued, “That’s gotta be devastating. News channels show images from Ukraine, from Gaza, from natural disasters. They get through them dispassionately. I can’t imagine how devastating this footage must be.”

It’s another Jon Stewart Monday at the Daily Show, with the host set to welcome his first goverment official since returning to the Comedy Central series in February.
Stewart’s guest tonight will be Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission.
Nominated by President Biden to the FTC when she was just 31 years old, Khan is best known for her work in antitrust and competition law.
Under her leadership, the Commission has pushed to ban non-compete agreements, filed lawsuits against health care companies engaging in anti-competitive practices, and launched several high-profile lawsuits against tech giants Microsoft, Meta and Amazon.
The case against Amazon, which 17 states have joined the FTC in bringing, focuses on the tech giant’s alleged use of unfair tactics to ensure it always offers the lowest prices on the internet. If successful, could mean huge changes for the Amazon, including a possible breakup of the internet goliath.
