Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.
Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.
While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. They were joined by two Off-Broadway entries, as well as...

Peter Morgan’s new play Patriots, now on Broadway, opens with an awareness of its audience. “In the West you have no idea,” Boris Berezovksy (an excellent Michael Stuhlbarg) says through a voiceover. “You think of Russia as a cold, bleak place, full of hardship and cruelty.” The stage is bare, and the oligarch, who played an instrumental role in Vladimir Putin’s rise to power, speaks to us from a liminal space. He goes on to describe the beauty of his country, Russian music, the sounds of children laughing in the streets and the taste of ice cream on a cold day.
When the stage comes into view (set design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Jack Knowles), it’s 1955. Berezovsky is a schoolboy gifted in mathematics. A teacher urges his parents — congenial and full of quips — to push their son. “Anyone can be a doctor, Mrs. Berezovsky,” says...

"Men in Black" is a bit of a strange franchise. For instance: did you know there are actually four movies in the series? I bet you completely memory-holed the 2019 movie "Men in Black: International," but it exists! Hell, you might have even checked out after the disappointing "Men in Black II" and not realized there was a "Men in Black III." And yet, the original "Men in Black," released in 1997, is a near-perfect movie. It blends humor, heart, and incredible visual effects to craft a memorable blockbuster that still holds up to this day. The basic set-up of all the film is the same: a secret government agency known as the Men in Black police outer space alien activity here on Earth. Four movies later, the franchise remains lopsided, but you really can't beat that first film.

Actor Michael Stuhlbarg, known for his role in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, was attacked by a homeless man in New York City’s Central Park on Sunday.
Stuhlbarg, 55, was reportedly taking a walk in Central Park at 7:45 p.m. when 27-year-old Xavier Israel struck Stuhlbarg in the head. Stuhlbarg chased down Israel, and the New York Police Department then apprehended and took into custody.
“A preliminary investigation determined a 27-year-old male threw a rock striking the victim in the back of the neck, causing minor injuries,” the NYPD said in a statement.
Authorities say Israel has previous charges of assault and robbery dating back to January 2022. Police charged Israel with second-degree assault. Stuhlbarg refused medical attention at the scene.

This article contains spoilers about the 2024 Broadway production of “An Enemy of the People.”
There will likely be few scenes this Broadway season more harrowing than the climax of Sam Gold’s “An Enemy of the People,” in which a town hall meeting called by Dr. Thomas Stockmann devolves into verbal and physical assault. In the aftermath of the scene’s brutality against the Norwegian doctor, who warns his community that their waters are contaminated, actor Jeremy Strong emerges from a crouched position on the stage floor in the Circle in the Square Theatre, where he has huddled and shrunk his body down to withstand a torrent of blows. It is a visceral moment of live theatre, one that the actor commits to wholeheartedly and that the Tony Awards should nominate.
What leads up to that frightening display of ignorance and animus is made all the richer by Strong’s performance.

Broadway actors John Cardoza, currently appearing in The Notebook, and Michael Stuhlbarg, who begins previews tonight in Patriots, have become the latest victims in what seems a surge of high-profile crimes in New York City.
Neither actor was seriously injured in the separate Easter Sunday incidents.
Cardoza, who plays “Younger Noah” in the musical based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, wrote in an Instagram Story post yesterday that he had been robbed, seemingly at gunpoint, at a Dunkin’ Donuts in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Hamilton Heights.
Police later said that the robber had “simulated a firearm.” The investigation in ongoing.
“It started out with him just asking for a dollar,” Cardoza wrote. “I offered to buy him lunch because I didn’t have cash on me, and it escalated from there very quickly.”

“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.

Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan’s upcoming play Patriots.
The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.
The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.

Netflix has joined as a producer of the stage play Patriots, marking the media giant’s first Broadway producing credit.
The play, which is written by Peter Morgan, creator of the Netflix series, The Crown, is set in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and follows a Russian billionaire, Boris Berezovsky, trying to recruit a then-unknown Vladimir Putin to run for president. But Putin’s rise to power soon threatens Berezovsky’s own interests, putting the two at odds.
A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that the company is developing a screen adaptation of the play, as had been reported in the New York Times.
While this is Netflix’s first Broadway credit, the streamer is also a producer on the currently running London production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is a prequel to the Netflix series.

Exclusive: After his World War I epic All Quiet on the Western Front took home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film and three others, director Edward Berger might have found his follow-up project with one of the biggest action heroes of this century. Sources tell Deadline that Universal Pictures is looking to get back in business with Jason Bourne as the studio has begun early development on a new installment in the Jason Bourne franchise and that Berger is in negotiations to oversee development and direct the pic.
Universal could not be reached for comment, and insiders close to the project say there is no script at this time and that it is still in early development. That said, Berger has been in high demand following All Quiet‘s big night at the Oscars, and his potential involvement with the project has all parties very excited about the future of Bourne.

Josephine Decker's 2020 film "Shirley" -- based on the novel by Susan Scarf Merrell -- is a biography of the legendary, and legendarily sour, horror author Shirley Jackson ... sort of.
Elisabeth Moss gives a truly great performance as Jackson, depicting her as a woman out of time, unwilling to play by the stuffy, sexist rules of "polite society." When a hen-like housewife peer of Jackson's whines that she might stain her couch with red wine, it's Jackson's instinct to upend her entire glass onto the upholstery. Jackson is depicted as cantankerous, lethargic, alcoholic, and mean.
"Shirley" centers on the relationship Jackson had with a wide-eyed college student named Rose Namser (Odessa Young), a young woman who is optimistic, happy in her new marriage, and eager to raise her unborn child. Jackson is childless and, as the film progresses, will reveal her resentment of that fact. Jackson is happy-ish in her marriage,...

However, Scott Derrickson wound up stepping down from Doctor Strange 2 just months before production was to begin and was replaced by Sam Raimi.
While speaking on The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, Scott Derrickson elaborated on his Doctor Strange 2 exit, which really was just due to creative differences and not any rumoured behind-the-scenes drama.
“All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth,” Derrickson said. “We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than–it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. And that’s how you make a really bad movie, I think. When the producer or...

"Bye, Bye, Bye?" More like "Hello, Hello, Hello!" Okay, that doesn't roll off the tongue nearly as well, but that's why I leave the songwriting to the actual musicians. Anyway, if you've been tuned into the world of pop music lately, you've no doubt gotten wind that Nsync has been up to ... something. The former members of the 1990s U.S. boy band sensation just reunited at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards to present the Best Pop Award to Taylor Swift. Is this their way of teeing up a cameo in T-Swizzle's box office hit in the making, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?"
No, the truth is either less or more exciting, depending on your feelings about the "Trolls" film series. Nsync veteran Justin Timberlake lends his voice to the animated franchise -- which is based on the mega-popular toy line created by Thomas Dam -- as the cynical troll...

The best scene of “Call Me by Your Name” has nothing to do with fruit, but a frank father-son conversation. Brittle to the point of breaking, Timothée Chalamet sits on the couch, arms crossed, resenting his dad for acknowledging the source of his anguish. “You’re too smart not to know how rare, how special, what you two had was,” Michael Stuhlbarg tells the boy. “I may have come close, but I never had what you two have. … How you live your life is your business.”
Gay men rarely receive that kind of acceptance from anyone, much less their parents, and hearing those words uttered in “Call Me by Your Name” went a long way to heal that wound for many who didn’t get that satisfaction from their own folks. Half a dozen years later, Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” feels like a feature-length expansion of that...

Netflix’s new limited series “Painkiller” tackles the Sackler dynasty and Purdue Pharma’s role in the opioid crisis through a fictional retelling of the epidemic — similar to Hulu’s 2021-released “Dopesick.”
“Painkiler” EP and director Pete Berg says the coincidence was simply a matter of timing.
“We were sort of moving at the same pace,” Berg told TheWrap about the Netflix six-episode series and “Dopesick.” “Both shows were in development around the same time, which happens every once in a while and our business. They went first.”
“Dopesick,” which premiered October 2021, stars Kaitlyn Dever, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Keaton, whose portrayal of a doctor getting bit by addiction Berg called “shattering.” Centering on similar themes of the destruction prompted by the opioid epidemic, “Painkiller,” which was released Thursday on Netflix, balances its critique of the Sackler family — led by Matthew Broderick’s Richard Sackler — with touching vignettes portrayed by Uzo Aduba,...

“Beef” is shaping up to have a great year at this year’s Emmys. The searing, sizzling, sensational Netflix limited series is predicted to be nominated for at least five Emmys, according to our odds chart, but it could earn a whole lot more than that if key supporting players such as Joseph Lee get caught up in the sweep.
“Beef” follows Steven Yeun as Danny Cho and Ali Wong as Amy Lau — two people involved in an incident of road rage that they just can’t let go of. Over the course of the 10-episode series, the two get caught up in a deadly game of one-upmanship as they try to seek revenge and wreak havoc on each other’s lives, dragging themselves and those around them down along the way. One of those people is Lee’s George Nakai, Amy’s stay-at-home husband.

With Martin Scorsese on the mind following the triumphant Cannes premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon, I’ve been looking to catch up on the last few unseen films from the master, which led to the uncovering of a delightful, expertly crafted homage to the Master of Suspense. Shortly after the Oscar-winning success of The Departed in 2007, the story goes like this: Scorsese came across remnants of The Key to Reserva, an unproduced script written by Alfred Hitchcock. He set out to direct his version of it in the precise style of the late director. However, there is a twist.
The script wasn’t real. The whole endeavor, which feels like an elaborate film school exercise, was actually a campaign paid for by the champagne company Freixenet. Shot by Harris Savides, with assistance from Ellen Kuras, and edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, the film stars Simon Baker along with a...

Comedian Hannah Gadsby is speaking up about the controversial ties the Sackler family has to their upcoming art show.
Gadsby, who uses they/them pronouns, co-creates the exhibit “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby” at the Brooklyn Museum, a show dedicated to unwrapping the complicated legacy of the artist. The program’s curators also include Catherine Morris, Sackler Senior Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
“I’m doing a show at the Brooklyn Museum. There’s one Sackler on the board [trustee emerita Elizabeth A. Sackler]. We vetted this. Apparently, they’ve separated their earning streams from the problematic one,” Gadsby told Variety. “I mean, take that with a grain of salt. Doesn’t matter what cultural institution you work with in America, you’re going to be working with billionaires and there’s not a billionaire on this planet that is not fucked up. It is just morally reprehensible.

Jessica Chastain is getting behind the mic to lead the upcoming Audible sci-fi thriller.
Premiering June 15, The Space Within features Chastain as Dr. Madeline Wyle, an acclaimed Ptsd and trauma psychiatrist who begins treating multiple patients who all seemingly have repressed memories of alien abductions. Wyle, according to Audible’s description of the project, must put her reputation and career at risk to get to the bottom of the memories and consider whether the abductions were indeed real.
The eight-episode series is the fourth — and first fiction work — coming from Audible’s four-project development and production deal with Spotlight producer Topic Studios. Previous projects included The Messenger, a series from the journalist Shiv Malik about his friendship with and later betrayal by a man who claimed to have been a former spokesperson for al-Qaida; American Isis, from journalist Trevor Aaronson about an American man who traveled to Syria to become...

Jewish horror certainly isn’t new. ‘The Dybbuk,’ a play by S. Ansky about the Jewish folkloric demon, was first performed in 1920. Since, there have been many stories of the mythological nightmare, from stage to screen and otherwise. The dybbuk is named for the word “to cleave” or “to cling,” referencing the demon’s way of latching onto a living body. It’s a soul of a dead person that takes up a living host, possessing them until it is able to accomplish its goal.
Unlike Christian demons we’re used to seeing in films, dybbuks aren’t cohorts of the devil, but souls of the dead who are unable or unwilling to move on due to unfinished business. Movies like The Unborn (2009), The Possession (2012), and Ezra (2017) used the dybbuk, but each fell into a common trap. We won’t spend time tackling the 2003 created “dybbuk box,” but suffice it...

"No matter how humble a family, a shoemaker was humbler, still." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled this 7-minute extended preview for a documentary film from 2022 titled Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams, made by Call Me By Your Name's Italian director Luca Guadagnino. This already opened in theaters last year (watch the original trailer) after first premiering at the 2021 Venice Film Festival. It's now available on home video to rent or buy. I was entirely fascinated by this film, even if it runs a bit long, it's an intriguing look at this man's remarkable story and how he really believed in making the perfect shoe for everyone. In the early 20th century, impoverished teenage Italian cobbler Salvatore Ferragamo sailed from Naples to America to seek a better life. He settled in Southern California, and became Hollywood's go-to shoemaker during the silent era. In 1927, he returned to Italy and founded in Florence his namesake luxury brand.

“Netflix and chill.” Future pop culture historians will likely look back and chuckle at that turn of phrase, which in the 2010s signaled a hefty technological shift from the days of “we can put on records.” It also represents the moment when Netflix dominated the zeitgeist for years. It’s an open question whether that dominance will continue after next month since the most popular streaming service is doing away with its password sharing capabilities. But in the meantime, let’s all “Netflix and chill” one last time, especially with Valentine’s Day around the corner.
Indeed, this Valentine’s season has a winsome collection for the romantics at heart to embrace, with a significant other or otherwise. Below is a list that includes Oscar winners, teen comedies, happy endings, sad endings, young love, old love, and enduring love. Let’s just say if you need something sweet to watch...

This interview contains spoilers for Yellowstone season 5.
Lilli Kay has earned it.
It wasn’t enough that she was a massive fan of Yellowstone. It wasn’t enough that her stepmother, Piper Parabo, had been cast as a recurring character for the past two seasons. It wasn’t even enough that her father, Stephen Kay, has directed over a dozen episodes of Yellowstone, as well as a handful episodes of Mayor of Kingstown, all the while serving as executive producer for both shows. Lilli, for the longest time, couldn’t even get to visit the set.
“I didn’t [visit] and that was a huge bummer, because it just never worked out. And I was so frustrated because that’s the world I love.” Kay explains. Her father seemingly ignored her pleas for quite some time – “I was begging to just come hang out, but I never got to go.”
Eventually,...

There are a lot of befores and afters in television history. Before and after colour transmission, for example, or before and after live broadcasts. And then there are the shows that catalyse great changes: before and after Seinfeld, before and after The Sopranos, before and after Breaking Bad. It’s the last of these that we are still feeling the ripples from: whether it’s Ozark or Happy Valley, TV drama is currently dominated by men thrown in at the deep end, struggling for their lives. And there is no show that takes this more seriously than the Bryan Cranston-led Your Honor.
As the second series opens, Adam Desiato’s death is still raw. His father, Michael (Bryan Cranston), has been impeached and seems to have taken the Unabomber as his grooming icon. He is approached by ambitious agent Olivia (Rosie Perez) who has the Baxter dynasty in her sights.

There are a few actors that come to mind when one thinks of director Luca Guadagnino: Dakota Johnson, who starred in his films A Bigger Splash and Suspiria; Michael Stuhlbarg, who appeared in Call Me By Your Name and Bones And All; Timothee Chalamet, who also starred in Bones and Cmbyn. And then there’s Armie Hammer,…...
