When Ken Russell’s provocative religious horror “The Devils” became available to stream for the first time last week, cinephiles the world over were re-introduced to one of the greatest under appreciated films of all time — one that is surprisingly poignant in our current state of political unease. Infamous for its controversial release (the film was banned in several countries and received an X rating only after Russell cut a handful of the most incendiary scenes), the 1971 epic offers a stylish and scathing parable about the dangerous ways that the powerful can exploit religious zeal to stay that way.
Based on the true story of the trial of Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest who was executed in 1634 on charges of witchcraft, Russell adapted “The Devils” from John Whiting’s 1960 play and Aldous Huxley’s 1952 novel, The Devils of Loudun. Sympathy for The Devils: The Suppression of Ken Russell’s Delirious, Incomparable Masterpiece
Despite the pronounced pedigree of its origins, Ken Russell’s glorious 1971 film The Devils is still mysteriously unavailable in the United States. An infamously plagued reception continues to usurp deserved attention away from its subversive content, though a growing legion of champions within the critical arena which had once sacrilegiously abandoned it has resulted in its growing recuperation.
Based, very loosely on a 1952 novel by literary giant Aldous Huxley depicting the downfall of 17th century French priest Urbain Grandier, it relates an incidence of hysteria and mob mentality run amok in the totalitarian paradigm of the Catholic Church. Russell, his project backed by none other than Warner Bros. studio itself, crafted an off-putting extravaganza of a film (shall we say, making Huxley’s text more Grandier) depicting events decried as pure blasphemy.
Wit unabashedly blunt sexual...

Jason-Isaacs-in-Case-Histories
Within the crowded field of British detective shows, Case Histories truly stands out as one of the very best contemporary dramas in recent years. It’s not as gloomy as Vera, not as gory as Luther, and it lacks the frivolity of Midsomer Murders. What it does offer is a realistic central character played brilliantly by Harry Potter bad-guy Jason Isaacs. Jackson Brodie (Isaacs) is broody but he’s positively jovial when compared with Wallander. He’s something of a lady’s man and could be described as Scotland’s answer to Jim Bergerac only with a penchant for cigarettes rather than booze. Brodie has his demons and he’s not immune to the odd cock-up but he’s a good guy at heart and he usually unravels the perplexing mysteries that land in his lap.
Case Histories ran for two seasons each comprised of three feature length mysteries.

Guillermo del Toro has slammed Warner Bros over the censorship of Ken Russell classic The Devils.
The filmmaker has criticised the continuing failure to release the 1971 movie in the UK market.
"There are powers that be at Warner Bros that refuse to allow the movie to be seen," del Toro told a master class Monday night in Toronto (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The film starred Oliver Reed, Vanessa Redgrave, Dudley Sutton, Michael Gothard and Gemma Jones.
It was based on Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun, the story of a corrupt priest (Reed) who is brought low by the accusations of a maddened mother superior (Redgrave).
"The movie has been seen very little. It can only be shown in its entirety in England if it's booked as an educational experience," said del Toro.
"It's not an accident. It's not because of lack of demand. It's a true act of censorship.

Line of Duty season two
Golden Globe winner Ian McShane is well known to TV fans on both sides of the ocean. He’s successfully created a niche for himself as a fiendish villain in shows such as Pillars of the Earth, Deadwood, and let’s not forget his memorable performance as Judas in Jesus of Nazareth. However, for anyone in England over the age of 35, the first thing that comes to mind when you say “Ian McShane,” is Lovejoy. The popular BBC series debuted in 1986 and was arguably the first real dramedy on British TV. Despite initial ratings success, it along with other shoes — including Doctor Who — was put on hiatus and fans had to wait five years for the second season of the show. On 2 September, Lovejoy season two comes to the U.S. on DVD, while seasons one and two are available on Acorn TV.

While November and December are the months in which the studios traditionally roll out their most prized awards contenders, there'll have to be an extraordinary surge of great movies between now and the new year to knock A Royal Affair (2012, Metrodome, 15) out of my top 10 for 2012. The better of the week's two zombie movies begins in Nigel Kneale fashion. A pair of hard-hats accidentally open a vault under an east London church that was sealed during the Great Plague in 1666 and release a force that rapidly spreads to create an implacable horde of flesh-eating monsters. Their appearance coincides with a threat to close a local old people's centre, the Bow Bells Care Home, run by the grandfather of three East End tearaways, who come to the aid of the grandfather – first by robbing a bank, then by battling against the zombies. It's a ragged film, indifferently acted, but not dislikable and occasionally quite amusing, as when West Ham zombies confront zombies from Millwall. The big attraction, however, comes from seeing the senior citizens recover the Churchillian spirit of the Blitz. They're led by Richard Briers clutching his walking frame, Dudley Sutton in a wheelchair and Honor Blackman supported by hip replacements,...

Although the title may conjure up images of a crudely-made, unimaginative Dtv schlock fest with Danny Dyer’s ubiquitous mug adorning a blood-drenched cover, in reality, Cockneys vs Zombies is actually a well-made (and frequently humorous) horror comedy. While it may not reach the heady heights of something like Shaun of the Dead, it proves there’s plenty of laughs to still be found in this over-saturated sub-genre.
Andy and Terry (likeable performances from Harry Treadaway and Rasmus Hardiker, respectively) are two siblings from the same affable, happy-go-lucky Del Boy-school of dubious business dealings. Their grandpa Ray (permanent mockney gangster fixture Alan Ford) is the proprietor and resident of an old folk’s home which is on the cusp of closure, and the well-meaning, if clueless duo hit upon an idea to rob a bank in order to pay of the debtors.
Their scheme appears to be running (semi) smoothly until police arrive mid-way though,...

This is surely the one you’ve all been waiting for as the first trailer for Cockney’s vs Zombies lands online. The movie is one I’ve been waiting a long time to see. It has a fabulous cast which includes former Bond Girl and acting royalty Honor Blackman alongside Michelle Ryan, Harry Treadaway, Alan Ford, Dudley Sutton, Georgia King, Richard Briers and Rasmus Hardiker who we recently saw alongside James Franco, Natalie Portman and Danny McBride in Your Highness. Cockneys vs Zombies is directed by Matthias Hoene and will be with us 31st August.
A bunch of east-enders fight their way out of a zombie-infested London, led by an unlikely gang of amateur bank robbers and foul-mouthed plucky pensioners .
Bear in mind that this is the red-band trailer so is Nsfw. It contains violence and swearing.
If you missed the brilliant images from the movie, click here to have a look.

Earlier in the year, I got to go along to the set of Cockneys vs Zombies for one of the most memorable days in my HeyUGuys career. You can find out more about that closer to the time of release including interviews with the cast and filmmakers. But in the meantime, Studio Canal have given us these eleven new images from the movie to share with the world and they’re quite something!
Did you ever think you’d see Honor Blackman (former Bondgirl and acting Royalty) wielding an AK47 (I think!) while being chased by dozens of deranged zombies? No, me neither, well prepare yourself because that’s exactly what you’re about to get! Also in the cast is Michelle Ryan, Harry Treadaway, Alan Ford, Dudley Sutton, Georgia King, Richard Briers and Rasmus Hardiker who we recently saw alongside James Franco, Natalie Portman and Danny McBride in Your Highness.

It’s perhaps not that surprising that Ice Age 4 shot straight back up to the top of the Box Office chart theatrical release this week, but the sheer volume by which it eclipsed The Amazing Spider Man is really quite something. Spidey took in a still respectable £4mllion but this was dwarfed by Ice Age’s epic £10 million haul. I guess one should never underestimate the all-round family appeal of these Ice Age movies, and it looks set to be one of the highest grossing movies of the year. If the figures keep looking this good, it won’t be much of a surprise when Ice Age 5 : The Neanderthal Strikes Back gets green lit in a few years’ time.
This week of course, that £10million take by Ice Age could appear like pocket change as The Dark Knight Rises finally arrives on the big screen. After months of trailers,...

Swandown
Featuring: Andrew Kötting, Iain Sinclair, Alan Moore, Stewart Lee, Marcia Farquhar, Dudley Sutton | Written by Andrew Kötting & Iain Sinclair | Directed by Andrew Kötting
Two men stand waist deep in the ocean, trying to launch a swan-shaped pedalo – the kind you’d find at a local park – on a journey that will take them from Hastings to Hackney via rivers and canals, meeting people of varied experiences and philosophies, a journey that appears to be the very antithesis of the upcoming olympics their final destination – the still-being-built stadium – represents. It takes them more than a day to get the pedalo out there.
The two men are avant-garde filmmaker and performance artist Andrew Kötting and regular partner in crime, writer Iain Sinclair. The film is called Swandown, and the voyage is much more compelling than I just made it sound.
The film is hard to define, even to make a distinction...

This evening, Ben Mortimer and myself headed out into the swanky part of London to attend the 2012 Jameson Empire Awards which take place at the Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair. We really love these awards as you’re never quite sure who’s going to turn up! The evening had a whole host of stars including Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, Ron Howard, Danny DeVito, Dolph Lundgren, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston…. the list goes on!
I’ve been up all night editing all the interviews that we got with many of the stars mentioned above so without further ado, here’s the red carpet interviews. Sorry there isn’t much of an explanation next to each but it’s now 3.30 am I need sleep but I’ll hopefully add some text in the morning for each.
The next I’ll be putting up the press interviews which take place after awards have been handed out.

Oliver Reed, Vanessa Redgrave, The Devils Ken Russell, the director of Women in Love, The Boy Friend, and Altered States, died Sunday, Nov. 27, at the age of 84. Coincidentally, the British Film Institute, with much fanfare, announced several months ago that it would be releasing for the first time on DVD the X-rated version of Russell's The Devils, a mix of history, political intrigue, religious fanaticism, and unbridled sex in 17th-century France. The X-rated version is purported to be the uncut version of The Devils. Well, it's not, really. Adapted by Russell from John Whiting's 1960 play and Aldous Huxley's 1952 historical novel The Devils of Loudun, The Devils stars Vanessa Redgrave (in lieu of a recalcitrant Glenda Jackson) as Loudun's Ursuline convent head Sister Jeanne, a neurotic, physically deformed woman who is sexually obsessed with local priest Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed). Following a series of "possessions" in the convent, Grandier...

Many TV shows struggling to find a following work out different ways to build a connection between its characters and audience which typically comes about by strong personality-driven episodes and the slow unraveling of their pasts. If the audience doesn’t care about the characters, they don’t care about the show. In Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Skins managed to keep us deeply involved in the lives of the troubled teens that populated its world of sex and drugs, but it wasn’t a success they wanted to dwell on. So with the third season they got a new batch of characters (centered on the younger sister of one of the main characters from the original bunch). With those characters established, we move on to the fourth season and unlike the first two, there’s just not enough interest in the characters to keep people coming back.

One thing I truly love about cinema is the way in which films can make an audience think, to ignite a spark in their minds, provoking thoughts that never would have occurred otherwise and send them off in new directions, contemplating new ideas and viewpoints. One of the most exciting ways that cinema often achieves this is through confrontation, dangerous and exciting cinema that pulls no punches and feels dangerous.
One such dangerous film is Ken Russell’s 1971 The Devils, screened last week as part of Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival with Ken Russell himself in attendance. The film takes place in 17th century France and focuses on Father Grandier, played by Oliver Reed giving probably the best performance of his career. Grandier is a sexually adventurous priest who, despite what appears to be genuine faith and devotion to god, pushes the boundaries of what is morally acceptable at the time,...

The Shouting Men, on general release in March, cert: Tbc
The attitudes of football fans have come a long way since the 1970s. British cinema has been slow to recognise this, however, and to this day delivers a constant spirit-sapping stream of fraudulently glamorous bovver movies – usually starring Danny Dyer strutting around like Liam Gallagher with an inflamed coccyx – which depict firms engaging in nawty rumbles, pwopah tear-ups, and the occasional pinging of some nonce. It's a flagrant insult to the intelligence: few other groups are trapped in a similar celluloid timewarp. Do policemen still sport handlebar moustaches? Do office workers hanker after the keys to the executive washroom? Has Hugh Grant recently been asked to look up his leading lady's skirt like a latter-day Robin Askwith?
