Slasher films are known for their one-liners, both the badass and the embarrassing. Dr. Loomis in the "Halloween" series, Freddy Krueger in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, Ghostface in the numerous "Scream" flicks, Pinhead in the "Hellraiser" films, and just about everything Chucky has ever said throughout his franchise have all birthed quotes as memorable as the characters who say them. In the delightfully silly "Freddy vs Jason," one of the most infamous lines is not spoken by either slasher icon or even the film's final girl, but by the secondary character Kia, played by Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child.
When Kia comes face to face with Freddy Krueger, she doesn't cower in fear -- she mocks him. Freddy Krueger thrives on fear, and by choosing to humiliate him instead, she defangs him quite a bit. She spends much of the movie being mouthy to everyone anyway, so...

Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.
It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

In 1984, Jason Voorhees (Ted White) finally met his end in Joseph Zito's "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter." He was finally dead. In 1991, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) finally met his end in Rachel Talalay's "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare." He was finally dead. In 1993, Jason Voorhees met his end again in Adam Marcus' "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday." He was finally dead again. In 1994, Freddy Krueger finally met his end again in "Wes Craven's New Nightmare." He was finally dead again.
The two monsters were once again somehow alive to face off in Ronny Yu's excitable 2003 battle royale "Freddy vs. Jason," a film that felt like it came too late to bank on the popularity of the characters, but that was a massive hit nonetheless. Longtime fans of 1980s slasher movies were eager to see two of the most popular monsters of its heyday (played...

‘Freddy vs. Jason’ 20 Years Later – The Ultimate Horror Battle Still Satisfies After All These Years
I was somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to my exposure to horror. I lacked the cool older relative or friend that seems to serve as a customary gateway for many genre fans. I had seen a few horror movies growing up (Child’s Play and Scream each terrified me at different points in my youth), but seeing Freddy vs. Jason at the tender age of 15 is single-handedly responsible for the horror fandom that has consumed my life ever since. Without the movie — which hit theaters 20 years ago today — I very likely wouldn’t be writing for Bloody Disgusting now.
I knew of Freddy and Jason through pop culture osmosis, but I hadn’t seen any of the combined 17 films that comprised the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises when Freddy vs. Jason piqued my interest. Even with the advent of Netflix’s DVDs by mail,...

It took 19 years for Freddy Krueger from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" to finally clash on the big screen. And let's face it: the two horror titans, the definitive monsters of '80s cinema, were always destined to duke it out. The fans demanded it, and the studios involved knew it would make bank. The perfect storm. It was just a matter of when. But this guaranteed success suffered in development hell throughout the '90s as writers and directors came and went, a rotating door of noteworthy (and not-so-noteworthy) talent that tried to crack the indelible premise of these two iconic characters battling to the death and transform it into an actual, workable movie.
And after so many folks tried and failed, writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift finally cracked the code, and director Ronny Yu translated it to the screen. And...

The 2023 Oscars hit almost all the right notes, with Jimmy Kimmel doing a terrific job of hosting, starting with a monologue that acknowledged last year’s slap heard around the world. Kimmel used his opening bit to point out there are 16 first-time acting nominees, including two from Encino Man – Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan.
Kimmel poked fun at Babylon for being a bust at the box office and noted Batgirl is the first superhero to be defeated by an accounting department. He also confirmed James Cameron declined his invitation, joking that you know a show is too long when even Cameron can’t sit through it.
“Some of the critics are saying Jim Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a ‘Best Director’ nomination. And, well, I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility. He does have a point. I mean,...

It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.
“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.
Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

Roger Deakins, legendary cinematographer and knight of the British realm, cut to the chase: In his view several of the best examples of cinematography are missing from this year’s Oscars list.
“The best cinematography hasn’t been nominated,” he tells me at the British consul general’s Oscars reception.
Which film I ask?
“It’s The Batman. That’s the best work in my view,” he says as he heaped acclaim on Greig Fraser’s “extraordinary” visual flair for the Warner Bros movie directed by Matt Reeves.
The picture should have been a contender in that category, Deakins insists.
“The reason it wasn’t is pure and simple: snobbery. There’s this unfair tendency to avoid the Marvel universe and the other popular universes,” he says.
Claudio Miranda, the director of photography of Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, “is another one that was shut out,” Deakins notes.
“It comes down to the work.

With an unprecedented number of Oscar nominations for Irish talent and films this year, everyone was celebrating the green wave at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards, held Thursday night — before the rain arrived — at Bad Robot in Santa Monica. “It’s amazing, there are 7 million people on that island, and all of them were nominated and are here tonight,” host J.J. Abrams joked, in a year when 25 percent of the Academy Award acting nominations are held by Irish actors.
The Oscar Wilde honorees this year were Irish actresses Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Eve Hewson (Flora and Son) and An Cailίn Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), the first Irish language film nominated for an Academy Award. Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to the movies, television and music.

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K
Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will soon head to Peacock after a staggeringly successful run both in theaters and on PVOD. The film bows on the streaming platform on March 10, there joining a series of Puss In Boots shorts, as well as other films in the Shrek franchise, and such additional DreamWorks favorites as The Croods and Trolls World Tour.
Directed by Joel Crawford, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the first film to come out of the Shrek universe in more than a decade, picking up with the daring feline outlaw Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) as he discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, and getting them back will send him on his grandest quest yet, heading out to find the mythical Wishing Star within the Black Forest. Joining him...

This marks the sixth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Animated Feature predictions.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

Now the Oscar race can really begin. The year’s biggest breakout indie hit, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” led the pack of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards that were announced this morning, with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress (x2) and Supporting Actor. It was followed by Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” with nine apiece. Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” picked up eight nods and Universal’s “The Fabelmans” took seven.
Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominees live on Tuesday from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. It was the first in-person nomination announcement with press in attendance since before the pandemic.
As Steve Pond, TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, noted in his final predictions, with the Academy bigger and more international than ever before, it was likely they would throw several surprises.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish has secured a China release date on December 23, two days after its North American bow. Apart from Avatar: The Way of Water, this currently appears to be the only other Hollywood title dated through the end of the year in the Prc.
After a series of previews, the animated sequel just began its international box office rollout this weekend, grossing 8.9M in 24 markets including France and Italy among majors. Domestic is dated for December 21 with other key overseas markets including Spain, Germany, Mexico, Australia, Korea and Brazil on deck throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The 2011 original spin-off grossed 555M globally (unadjusted). It did not release in China. While the market has been depressed this year, Universal titles have seen fairly steady influx including Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Bad Guys.

Of all the movies due to hit theaters this holiday season, you probably didn't expect to have a "Puss in Boots" sequel sitting high on your list of much-anticipated titles. But based on everything we've seen and heard about this film, it's very much worthy of being on your radar. We first met Puss in Boots back in 2004, if you can believe it. The dastardly cat stole the show in "Shrek 2" and appeared in two more sequels before taking center stage in his 2011 spinoff. Over a decade later, he's returned, just as reckless as ever, but with a stunning new look.

In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). Penguins of Madagascar waddles onto screens this holiday week, a spinoff of DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar animated franchise. But as I say in my video review above, this film focuses on just one corner of that franchise’s winning collection of critters, the scheming pack of penguins. And it never quite takes flight, despite its manic pace and an evil octopus (!) voiced wonderfully by John Malkovich.
Other voice cast members include the seemingly omnipresent Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom McGrath (director of the three Madagascar films), Chris Miller (Puss in Boots director), Christopher Knights and Conrad Vernon (director of Shrek 2 and Monsters vs. Aliens).
The film was directed by Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith, from a script fashioned by McGrath, Brandon Sawyer, Eric Darnell, John Aboud and Michael Colton. Producers are Laura Breay and Mark Swift.

Is the long-anticipated "Spy Hunter" video game adaptation finally going to move into development? It seems like after virtually everyone in Hollywood has a hand in the movie, it's going to be moving forward again.
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is moving "full speed" on the flick now that the studio has signed Carter Blanchard to write the script.
The good news is that Ruben Fleischer is still slated to direct this flick. He just helmed "Gangster Squad" for Warner Bros., and it seems like this could be the next project on his slate. Fingers crossed he sticks with this, since "Spy Hunter" definitely doesn't need another director leaving it in the dust.
"Spy Hunter's" story started back in 2003 when Universal Pictures picked up the rights to the 1983 arcade game. Dwayne Johnson was originally supposed to star, but Universal spent a while hiring writers to try to pen the project.

Soon the animals are discovered by dogged French animal control officer Capitaine Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand) who does not appreciate zoo animals running wild in her city and is thrilled by the idea of hunting her first lion! DreamWorks Animation have announced a very exciting total of nine films to be released in the coming five years.
Three of the nine will be sequels to previous successes (Kung Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3, and How To Train Your Dragon 2), and the rest will be originals – albeit, with Puss In Boots being a spin-off from the Shrek franchise.
The release schedule looks as follows:
– Kung Fu Panda 2, 26th May, 2011
– Puss In Boots, 4th November, 2011
– Madagascar 3, 8th June, 2012
– Rise Of The Guardians, 21st November, 2012
– The Croods, 1st March, 2013
– Turbo, 7th June, 2013
– My And My Shadow, 8th November, 2013
– Mr. Peabody & Sherman, 21st March, 2014
– How To Train Your Dragon 2, 20th June, 2014
Looking down the list, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched a prediction to expect the studio to have nine very successful films on their hands. The three sequels will naturally attract and build on the original audience,...
