Wrestlemania week begins tonight with Raw but you can kick it off with the over-the-top gory and insanely fun home invasion slasher Here for Blood, available on all digital platforms and also our Screambox streaming platform.
Here for Blood feels like a ’90s video store discovery that’s brimming with gore and jam-packed with laughs, and has become an instant favorite of mine and our team’s as well. We are certain Bloody Disgusting readers are going to fall in love with this indie gem.
Directed by Daniel Turres, Here for Blood follows a down-on-his-luck wrestler (Shawn Roberts; Albert Wesker in the Resident Evil films) and his girlfriend (Joelle Farrow) who are having a hard time making ends meet. When his girlfriend finds herself overwhelmed by exams, muscle-bound wrestler Tom O’Bannon steps in to cover one of her babysitting gigs.

This week brings four new horror movies to the table, and they’re all releasing on the same day. That should make this Friday feel like Friday the 13th… even if it’s actually Friday the 9th.
Here’s all the new horror releasing on February 9, 2024!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
First up, Stone Age horrors will be unleashed in Out of Darkness, which had previously been titled The Origin. Bleecker Street brings the film to theaters on Friday, February 9.
We’ve been told, “It’s a tense, emotional, and incredibly crafted film; so much creativity went into making the paleolithic world – including the entire language spoken in the film, which was created specifically for this by a linguist and an archaeologist.”
In the film, “A small boat reaches the shores of a raw and desolate landscape. A group of six have struggled...

After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. In a recent interview with Variety, production designer Tamara Deverell described the process of building the set for "The Interview," an episode of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" that takes place largely inside a hazy, orange, retro-futuristic room.
Fans of "Cabinet of Curiosities" will remember "The Interview" as perhaps the show's trippiest installment. The hour stars comedians Eric André, Steve Agee, and Charlyne Yi, plus actress (and future "Rebel Moon" star) Sofia Boutella, actor Michael Therriault, and screen legend Peter Weller. In what appears to be a curious slow-burn experiment, a group of disparate people -- including a psychic, novelist, record producer, and astrophysicist -- are gathered together in a drug-filled mansion...

Plot: In Chucky’s unending thirst for power, season 3 now sees Chucky ensconced with the most powerful family in the world — America’s First Family, inside the infamous walls of the White House. How did Chucky wind up here? What in God’s name does he want? And how can Jake, Devon, and Lexy possibly get to Chucky inside the world’s most secure building, all while balancing the pressures of romantic relationships and growing up? Meanwhile, Tiffany faces a looming crisis of her own as the police close in on her for “Jennifer Tilly’s” murderous rampage last season.
Review: Chucky‘s reign of small-screen terror has been a surprising success for two seasons in a row. Fans have delighted in the diminutive doll’s murderous spree around Hackensack, New Jersey, which saw the return of many characters from the original franchise. Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.
Here Deverell breaks down some of her favorite sets from the series.
“Lot 36″
The first episode tells the story of Tim Blake Nelson as Nick Appleton, who purchases the titular Lot 36 from a recently deceased old man and discovers strange items such as a séance table and rare books. However, the Lot also holds dark demonic secrets
What were some initial conversations you had about the set build for this?
That was storage lockers gone crazy. We built the storage lockers.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” Episode 7, “The Viewing.”]
If a fake exploding head is going to look believable, you need to fill it up first. Just ask Dennis Berardi, the visual effects supervisor on “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
“We packed it with bits of lookalike meat and some fleshy bits. It was all stuff that wasn’t real organic. It needed to keep and fit the molds,” Berardi said.
It wasn’t the only part of this process that needed some practical glop in order to bring something terrifying to life. All of that work was in service of “The Viewing,” the Panos Cosmatos-directed episode of the Netflix horror anthology. In it, a handful of strangers are summoned by a wealthy eccentric (Peter Weller) to witness a strange addition to his collection. After a night of rare booze and Space Cocaine, the group gathers around...

This review contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: “The Viewing”
If you’ve seen Panos Cosmatos’ films Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy, you might have already had an idea of what you were in for before you hit play on his Cabinet of Curiosities installment, “The Viewing,” and that’s a wild, surreal ride with you in the passenger seat and no seatbelt. Cosmatos continues to speed down this particular genre avenue, and its one that has intoxicated his burgeoning fan base as the director always puts such a distinctive visual and aural stamp on his projects. There’ll be a woozy atmosphere hogging a fairly straightforward plot, dialogue just vague enough for your confusion to linger throughout, and a retro, claustrophobic and saturated color palette that makes you feel like you’re constantly trying to outrun something bad in a nightmare.
Incredibly, Cosmatos is...

Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Merely making each episode longer isn’t the answer either, as hourlong anthologies have proven especially hit-or-miss. Where 30-minute entries (like many in “Room 104” and “Roar”) can be quick and cutting, a doubled runtime can result in bloat, banality, or both.
Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

Don Mancini’s Cult Of Chucky is an anomaly; Hollywood’s smallest horror icon “jumps the proverbial shark” but instead pulls off a daring scripted stunt that sticks its revitalized landing. We’ve come a long way since 1988 – Andy Barclay fighting his Good Guy nemesis – far enough to introduce a bride, child and now congregation into Chucky’s life. Mancini plays as wacky-and-loose as he wants with plot – it doesn’t get less believable than a murderous children’s toy possessed through a voodoo curse. So why not evolve mythology and upgrade Charles Lee Ray’s murderous capabilities? In keeping with the tradition of a forward-thinking franchise focused on reinvention, Chucky’s latest playdate strives for vigorous kills, legacy unquestioned and a logical blend of 80s-meets-modern-classics slasher intuition.
I’ve screamed it before and I’ll pontificate again – Child’s Play is the strongest horror franchise still running, ever created,...

Let’s talk memorable movie killers for a second. Since Mrs. Bates first slashed her way through the shower curtain in Room 1 of that roadside motel in Psycho (1960), franchise-minded murderers have had a hard time of it in the consistency department, regardless of how strong they may have lunged out of the gate. Established classics of the genre, like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street have all given birth to an array of sequels, remakes and reboots that may have extended their nasty protagonists’ shelf life, but none could approach their origins in terms of frights or filmmaking quality.
The exception to this rule of inconsistency and ever-diminishing returns in serial killer movie franchises seems to be the maniac who may have been the most unlikely to succeed, or certainly to endure, to begin with. He would be Charles Lee Ray (played with customary intensity...

In Cult Of Chucky, the murderous doll returns to wreak more havoc, but is the seventh film in the franchise anything to get excited about?
It might sound like a very silly thing to say, but the Child's Play franchise has always remained fairly grounded.

"Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?" He's back for more! An official trailer has debuted for the latest Chucky doll film, titled Cult of Chucky. This is technically the seventh film in the seemingly never-ending Child's Play series, after Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky most recently. This one is also going straight-to-dvd and we're making an exception to post about it, just because it's another Chucky movie so why not. The story follows Fiona Dourif as Nina, who is in an insane asylum where she has been convinced she murdered her entire family, not Chucky. Things are getting better until the doctor brings another "Good Guys" doll in as a therapeutic tool. Also starring Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, Michael Therriault, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. This looks like more of the same from the others, but what do I know. Here's the first...

A Red Band trailer has been released for Don Mancini's Cult of Chucky. Slated for an October home entertainment release, the clip shows horror's most famous doll, returning to kill. Actor Brad Dourif voices Chucky. Brad's daughter, Fiona Dourif, also returns to her role as Nica. This character was scarred from the previous film, Curse of Chucky (2013). This time events take place an asylum, for the criminally insane. This confined space makes it easy for Chucky to kill again, again and again.... The trailer shows Nica in group therapy. A psychiatrist (Michael Therriault) tries to convince her that she has killed her family, not Chucky. In order to desensitize Nica to her trauma, a Good Guy doll is entered into the mix. Then, the killing mysteriously begins again. Meanwhile, Chucky's bride, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), also enters the fray - furthering bloodying matters. Cult of Chucky will have a home entertainment release,...

Numerous films over the year have had tv adaptations, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Fargo, with many of them enjoying critical and commercial acclaim. With shows such as Spartacus and Party Down once part of their channel, and a current lineup that includes Ash vs. Evil Dead and Power, Starz is set to add another television adaptation to the mix with an adaptation of Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience.
Executive produced by Soderbergh, the series, whose first season will consist of 13 episodes, will be written and directed by Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz, marking the duo’s transition to television as well. Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Riley Keough takes on the lead role, joined by Mary Lynn Rajskub, Michael Therriault, and Paul Sparks. While a premiere date for the show has yet to be announced, the first trailer for the series has now been released, and can be seen below.

A familiar face arrives in Heroes Reborn, but will it be enough to make up for inconsistent character development elsewhere?
This review contains spoilers.
1.6 Game Over
Game Over is not an easy episode to wrap your head around. It continues Heroes Reborn’s rapid pacing and an awful lot happens in each character’s story arc but worryingly, much of this week’s action comes out of leftfield, contradicting previous character and story development.
Luke’s suicide attempt, for example, wasn’t how most viewers would’ve expected the character to develop, yet it’s baffling how quickly his resolve to end his life disappears after being rescued at the hands of Malina and some shoddy special effects. Watching the farcical scene in which the ex-Evo hunter is looking rather sheepish after his attempted drowning and Malina passes him a hot drink, you’d think the guy...

Title: Stranded Director: Roger Christian Starring: Christian Slater, Brendan Fehr, Amy Matysio, Michael Therriault Rote, declamatory representations of paranoia, fear, delusion and counter-attack get cycled through in “Stranded,” a low-budget science-fiction actioner that unfolds on a heightened emotional pitch which doesn’t leave much room for intrigue or escalating tension. Starring Christian Slater, the futuristic movie is set on the lunar surface, but it lacks the overall virtuosity of “Moon,” the visual elegance of the flawed but interesting “Europa Report,” or even the outlandish lunacy of “Apollo 18.” In short, it’s a paycheck project for all involved, and nothing that those outside of diehard genre completists need waste their time on. Seeing movies like Stranded makes one appreciate something like Alien even more. The former is a dime a dozen, while the latter is all too rare. Obviously Ridley Scott’s masterpiece proves what is possible despite a small cast and limited budget and locations. Too often though what we get is something like Stranded, derivative and unimaginative and a total waste of time.
The movie wastes no time getting started. A little more setup might have helped. After being informed that the action takes place on a moon base, a sudden meteor shower damages communication systems and thrusts the four crew members into an emergency situation. Said crew consists of Gerard (Christian Slater), Dr. Krauss (Brendan Fehr), Ava (Amy Matysio), and Bruce (Michael Therriault).

Image Entertainment has set a July 26 theatrical release date for Stranded, the new film from Roger Christian, which stars Christian Slater and his miraculously returning hairline; and we have a new one-sheet and trailer to go along with it!
Slater plays Gerard, and the story centers on a series of terrifying events that take place aboard the Ark moon base. When a meteor suddenly collides with their base, the astronauts find themselves in immediate danger. The crew members quickly learn that spores from the meteorite can replicate cell structure, reproduce, and mutate, forcing everyone on board to fight for their lives.
Ava, the only female astronaut, becomes infected, showing signs of pregnancy at a rapid rate. Within 36 hours she gives birth to a creature that mutates into the life form of another crew member. As the astronauts begin to experience this sinister presence, the virus spreads, and Gerard urges for the killing of Ava.

"What if she's right? What if there's something else inside the station?" Image Entertainment has debuted the official Us trailer for Stranded, a very low budget indie sci-fi film from Roger Christian about a space station gone awry after a meteor storm. The international cast is lead by Christian Slater, but includes Brendan Fehr, Amy Matysio and Michael Therriault. We featured an early promo trailer when this was selling in Berlin, but this is a brand new trailer and it has some cool twists in the second half with the repeating "I'm not going insane!" line. That's about all to appreciate though, as this otherwise looks terrible. Here's the official release trailer for Roger Christian's Stranded, in high def from Apple: Four isolated astronauts on board a bio-dome space craft, experience a ghostly intercession after a meteor storm, leading to paranoia, fear and death. The film was produced by Minds Eye Entertainment in Canada.

Stars: Christian Slater, Brendan Fehr, Amy Matysio, Michael Therriault | Written by Christian Piers Betley | Directed by Roger Christian
Whereas the name Christian Slater once meant a sign of a great movie (I’m thinking of the likes of Heathers, Mobsters, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and his magnum opus, Pump Up the Volume), today it tends to mean low-budget, badly scripted straight to DVD fodder. The last Slater film I watched, Sofia, was a bit of a mess. The film could have been an action-packed espionage thriller, but instead the film saw both actor and director seemingly out of their depth – with Slater literally trying to “act” like a tough guy without backing it up with any actual physicality. So I approached Stranded with a bit of trepidation, even moreso given that director Roger Christian was responsible for the atrocity that was Battlefield Earth…
