In 2004, Rolling Stone launched its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Tabulated from a massive vote that had artists, industry figures, and critics weighing in, the list has been a source of conversation, inspiration, and controversy for two decades. It’s one of the most popular, influential — and argued-over— features the magazine has ever done.
So we set out to make it even bigger, better, and fresher. In 2021, we completely overhauled our 500 Songs list, with a whole new batch of voters from all over the music map. Our new podcast,...

Nearly everyone has heard about Woodstock and the US Festival, but the same can’t be said for the Memphis Country Blues Festival. Depending on the year, the annual gathering held in Memphis between 1966 and 1970, was the place to see and hear genre icons. Country-blues guitarists Furry Lewis and Mississippi Fred McDowell, along with blues and R&b character Rufus Thomas, all played there, as did folk and rock guitar heroes Johnny Winter and John Fahey. The Rolling Stones were even invited to appear (more on that later), and some...

The Beatles had no peers when they were at the peak of their powers. Still, The Rolling Stones came close, with some help from John Lennon, whose throwaway song became their first hit. The bands cultivated different images — proper and respectful gentlemen vs. streetwise rebels — but The Beatles and Rolling Stones were exactly alike in one major way in the 1960s.
The band members personalities made The Beatles and Rolling Stones almost the same
Few (if any) classic rock fans would confuse the music the Beatles and Stones made, especially in each band’s early days. The Fab Four channeled their shared love of early rock ‘n’ roll and R&b into easily digestible pop hits. The Stones’ passion for blues came through on their first albums, where they covered Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Rufus Thomas, and Chuck Berry.
The differences extended beyond the music. The professionally-dressed Beatles were jealous of The Rolling Stones’ clothes.

“You don’t do the business, the business will do you,” B.B. King (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) tells the rising Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. He says this after a late-night jam session which includes Little Richard (Alton Mason), and while the blues guitarist is admiring the shiny new ride owned by the white rock and roll sensation. King advises Elvis to start his own label.
In reality, B.B. King did just that in 1956. At the time, he was coming off his best year, according to King of the Blues: The Rise and Reign of B.B. King, by Daniel de Visé. King had just packed the Howard Theater in Washington D.C. and Harlem’s Apollo, as well as 340 other venues. Born Riley B. King on a Mississippi plantation in 1925, B.B. “Blues Boy” King had risen to the height of his musical popularity by the mid-1950s.

On June 22, Kacey Musgraves released a heartbreaking cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love" from Baz Luhrmann's forthcoming "Elvis" biopic. The song was released with a music video featuring clips from the film itself, showing what appears to be an emotional breakup scene between Austin Butler's Elvis and Olivia DeJonge's Priscilla Presley. Needless to say, it makes for tearjerking viewing.
"Can't Help Falling in Love" is the latest release from the "Elvis" soundtrack. On June 16, Måneskin shared a rendition of "If I Can Dream" and Eminem shared a version of "The King and I" featuring CeeLo Green. On June 10, RCA Records released a recording of Austin Butler singing "Trouble." On June 3, Diplo and Swae Lee released "Tupelo Shuffle," which features Gary Clark Jr. and Austin Butler. The release of "Tupelo Shuffle" came a day after Doja Cat released "Vegas," which remixes Elvis's "Hound Dog" and features a...

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is far from being just about Elvis, when it comes to the music in the film and on a forthcoming soundtrack album. Besides the vintage Presley cuts included, the movie is providing the opportunity for the most high-profile multi-artist soundtrack in years. The lineup of participating artists was announced in May — without any song titles attached — and a handful of singles has been released, by Eminem, Måneskin and Doja Cat. But not until the film began screening more widely, in advance of its June 17 wide release, did it become fully apparent who was singing what and just how some of the more unusual choices would fit into the biopic.
Here’s a guide to the most notable newly recorded tracks and how they’re used in the film — followed by a guide to which songs are Elvis originals and which are sung by Austin Butler or,...

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” jams into theaters June 24. The film’s hype just keeps growing, especially after receiving a 12-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 39 minutes, the biopic has received mixed reviews that range from “trainwreck” to “a sharp edit away from being a classic.” According to Time Magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek, “Luhrmann sees equal value in fact and myth.” The Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang wrote, “It’s all a bit much, which means it’s just right.”
Audiences will have a chance to find out for themselves later this month, but for now here’s everything we know about “Elvis.”

The full artist lineup for the “Elvis” soundtrack has been revealed — although still not the actual tracks they’re performing — and among those takin’ care of business on the album are Eminem, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Jack White and Jazmine Sullivan.
A handful of the artists named were already known, including Kacey Musgraves, who said on the Met Gala red carpet that she’ll be doing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for the film; Maneskin, whose version of “If I Can Dream” was used in a recent teaser trailer; and Doja Cat, whose “Vegas” was already released as the album’s first single.
But that still left room for plenty of surprises in Monday’s announcement. Along with the aforementioned, the lineup includes CeeLo Green, who is listed as a collaborator with Eminem on their mystery track; the combination of Swae Lee and Diplo; and Chris Isaak and Pnau,...

“The Masked Singer” has reached the halfway point in the competition with episode 6 airing on April 13. The title tells it all: “The Double Mask Off – Round 2 Finals.” Two of the remaining three contenders in Group B — Armadillo, Miss Teddy and Ringmaster — will be eliminated by the end of the episode. The last contestant standing will move on in the competition to face Firefly from Group A.
We’ve already seen two of the Group B celebrities unmasked: Lemur was supermodel Christie Brinkley while Hydra turned out to be magicians Penn & Teller. They were ousted at the end of the April 6 episode. That installment was short on clues but we’ve gone back and rewatched it and the previous shows and have all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Armadillo”?

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 7, Episode 5, of “The Masked Singer,” “Masking For a Duel — Round 2,” which aired April 6 on Fox.
That’s no illusion, it really was Vegas legends Penn and Teller unmasked on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer.” Penn Jillette and his quiet partner Teller were disguised under the three-headed Hydra outfit. (Scroll down to watch the unmasking.)
And yes, that was Teller who did most of the singing — in two different voices, one as himself and one in an aristocratic-style voice patterned after Rex Harrison in “My Fair Lady.”
That may very well be the only time you’ll ever hear Teller — famously mute during all Penn & Teller appearances — actually talk. According to Jillette — who naturally spoke solo with Variety — the decision was made to have Teller sing most of the songs since Jillette’s booming voice is so recognizable.

A music festival, held in 1969, is filmed — bits of it airing on local TV — but then shelved for decades before it’s resurrected for a new film. No, it’s not Summer of Soul. It’s Memphis ’69, a recently completed doc — which starts airing next week — that amounts to the blues equivalent to the lauded, Questlove-directed chronicle of that gathering of soul, R&b, and jazz acts.

Beastie Boys and Biz Markie were both New York hip-hop pioneers, so it’s natural they spent a lot of time together. The two artists often shared a stage, including a 1988 Madison Square Garden show where Biz performed an inimitable version of Elton John’s “Bennie and The Jets.” (That version later ended up on the Beasties’ Sounds of Science anthology.) As Rob Sheffield notes in his tribute to the rapper, who died Friday night at age 57, Biz even gave the Beasties the name for their label and magazine, Grand Royal.

Like any art form, music is hotly debated, and it’s subject that naturally inspires a lot of curious ideas about the origins of the art-form (and its various genres), as well as the often bizarre antics of those at its forefront. Of course, some of these musical opinions are deliberately daft, whereas others are given an unusual amount of credence by the musical community at large. And what do they all have in common?

Nashville, Tenn. — Charles "Skip" Pitts, the longtime Memphis guitar player for Isaac Hayes whose distinctive sound helped define soul and make "Shaft" cool, has died. He was 65.
Tim Sampson, communication director with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, said Pitts died Tuesday in Memphis after a long struggle with cancer.
Pitts was responsible for the unforgettable wah-wah pedal guitar sound on Hayes' "Theme from Shaft," the `70s Blaxploitation film that remains a memorable moment in American popular culture – mostly due to the enduring popularity of the song. Mark Landsman’s Thunder Soul hits theaters this Friday, so in lieu of a traditional interview we asked him, what five documentary films influenced him as a filmmaker during the creation of Thunder Soul.
I find it challenging whenever anyone asks me to list a ‘top five’ of anything--especially movies--because I love a lot of them for a lot of different reasons--it’s tough to do a process of elimination. But in thinking about it, in terms of the top five docs that have made the greatest impact on me as a filmmaker and most influenced my current project, Thunder Soul, I think it’d be these. I offer them up knowing that there are many more that live in the brain drive and influence me even when I not realizing it.
