The box office record-breaking success of "Wicked" is once again proving the crowd-pleasing chops of Jon M. Chu, who had previously demonstrated them via the massive success of a certain swanky romantic comedy to which he was connected long before becoming its director. Based on the eponymous novel by Kevin Kwan, 2018's "Crazy Rich Asians" topped the box office in its release week and went on to gross over $239 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It's safe to say that it's a movie with a lot of fans.
Thankfully, there are several other films you can queue up if you count yourself as one of those fans. Whether you're drawn to the perfectly executed rom-com plotting, to the Asian American representation, to the themes of familial displacement and culture clash between North America and Asia, to the snarky sense of humor, or to the ritz and sumptuousness of the wedding...

Sharing a meal with family and friends is all well and good as far as Christmas celebrations go, but for the film lovers among us, it's the perfect time to hibernate in front of the television with a cozy blanket and mug of hot chocolate with a watch-list of some of the greatest Christmas films ready to go. While not every cinephile finds satisfaction out of the genre, it's a time so magical that everything from horror films, '80s action, and even German Impressionism can all find a place in Christmas films.
Ranging from the corny and ridiculous to generational classics, Christmas films have introduced to us some of cinema's most memorable characters. The traditional George Baileys and multiple Santa Clauses hit us in the feels and remind us of the season's merriment, while the Christmas-adjacent Gizmos and John McClanes grant us the space to clench, laugh, and gasp with festive cheer.

Plot: Based on Charles Yu’s award-winning book of the same name, the show follows the story of Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called Black & White. Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables, dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown and aspiring to be the lead of his own story. When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, while discovering his own family’s buried history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.
Review: Interior Chinatown is an interesting approach to telling a meta-fictional story. Rather than breaking the fourth wall or setting a story within a story, this series takes the approach of interconnecting characters often relegated to the background and showing how they can break free of their stereotypical and cliche constraints to...

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? It turns out Abner Doubledeal, Dean Suspendington, and the Masked Unity do. Those are all characters voiced by the inimitable Tom Kenny.
Most audiences likely know Kenny's work playing SpongeBob SquarePants, the title character from one of Nickelodeon's biggest shows ever. SpongeBob is a childlike sea sponge, shaped like a kitchen sponge, who lives in blissful joy in his pineapple shaped house in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob has achieved his dream of being a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, his favorite burger joint, and is rarely seem without a smile on his oblivious face. "SpongeBob SquarePants" debuted in 1999 and has been running ever since, occasionally pausing for a feature film or a spinoff series. The show's creator, Stephen Hillernburg, passed in 2018.
Kenny has been loyal to SpongeBob ever since 1999, but the character is only one small piece of a long comedy career.

Futurama returned once more to our screens last year with a fourth outing on Hulu. The long-running animated series about the hijinks of intergalactic delivery crew Planet Express has seen its share of cancellations and comebacks over the years. Originally debuting on Fox in the late 90s to early 2000s, it lived on through movies and a Comedy Central run before that finale was called into question as well.
Now under the banner of Hulu, fans were eager to see what more adventures the creative minds behind Matt Groening and David X. Cohen could conjure up utilizing their blend of sci-fi fantasy and subversive humor. Overall the response was positive, with the new episodes feeling like a natural extension of the beloved world that had been established. It was clear the writers still had more stories to tell and the characters’ charm remained intact despite the passage of time.

In the "Futurama" episode "Time Keeps on Slippin'", the Professor (Billy West) tasks Leela (Katey Sagal), Bender (John Dimaggio), and Fry (Billy West) to fly into a distant space cloud and retrieve several chronitons — marble-size time particles — and bring them back to Earth for an experiment. The Professor has grown five mutant infants in his lab and needs the chronitons to accelerate their growth and turn them into adults within a matter of seconds. The Professor's mutants are meant to serve as the members of a high-octane, superpowered basketball team constructed to take on the Harlem Globetrotters.
When the chronitons were removed from their space cloud, however, it accidentally left a small rip in the space-time continuum. Time began behaving erratically across the universe, skipping forward a few minutes, then a few hours, then a few weeks.
The skips allowed the writers of "Futurama" to squeeze in a few clever gags.

This week, AppleTV+ brings us Land of Women, starring Eva Longoria as Gala, a woman who has to flee her luxurious Manhattan life when a couple of hired goons crash the opening of her brand-new wine shop to say her husband Fred (James Purefoy) owes their boss $15 million. Gala gathers her mother Julia (Carmen Maura) and teen daughter Kate (Victoria Bazua) and sets off for La Muga, Julia’s hometown in Catalonia, to hide from Fred’s shady creditor and plot her next move.

Regarding sci-fi shows, Hulu doesn’t have any big names like 3 Body Problem or Westworld, but it makes up for that by carrying some great new and old shows like Devs and The X-Files, which were loved by millions of people. My Adventures with Superman is one of the most brilliant superhero animated series. Created by Brendan Clougher, Jake Wyatt, and Josie Campbell, the Adult Swim series tells the story of Superman aka Clark Kent as he starts his new job at The Daily Planet, with his roommate Jimmy Olson, and his senior intern at The Daily Planet who is none other than Lois Lane. They quickly become a team and try to bring in big stories so that they can become real reporters while Clark also tries to become the hero he is meant to be. My Adventures with Superman has great action but the brilliant thing about the series is that it isn’t an action series about Superman, it’s a series about a superhero and his relationships as he figures out who he really is. So, if you love the heart, optimism, great story, and fantastic animation...

The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) drinks a lot. And he doesn't seem to have much of a preference when it comes to his alcohol consumption. He will happily down classy cocktails, girly drinks like Fuzzy Navels, cheapo beers, or jugs of XXX rotgut moonshine. The alcohol gets him drunk but also keeps his fuel cells charged. Bender, as his name implies, is always a little tipsy. He only becomes erratic when he becomes sober. Although when drunk (i.e. in a normal state), Bender is hardly a model of poise; he's a kleptomaniac who has taken hostages on live TV more than once, all while waving around guns, smoking cigars, and encouraging viewers to beat their children.
Naturally, Bender is a lovable friend.
In what is likely a design flaw, all the robots in "Futurama" belch fire. When they need to expel dangerous exhaust, they simply burp it out of their mouths.

The fourth "Futurama" movie, "Into the Wild Green Yonder," was released on DVD on February 24, 2009, and it was intended to be the final word on the series ... again. The initial run of "Futurama" ended in 2002 after encountering poor ratings. DVD sales of the show remained robust, however, and Fox agreed to make four straight-to-video "Futurama" movies as a way of resurrecting the series for what was essentially one final season. The four movies did better than expected, and Comedy Central picked up "Futurama" for a third run, starting in 2010. "Futurama" is the brain that wouldn't die.
But for a while, it looked like "Into the Wild Green Yonder" was going to be the last time audiences would ever see "Futurama," and the makers wanted the story to be appropriately epic. The story of "Green Yonder" involves a sudden cosmic surge of Chi, or life-giving energy, that spontaneously pulsates into the galaxy.

When "Futurama" debuted in 1999, smartphones weren't yet ubiquitous. There were some computer-like phones on the market, of course — tech-savvy nerds might recall Ibm's Simon from 1994 — but the first wireless internet-ready phones weren't put on the mass market until 2001. The first iPhone wasn't introduced until 2007, and by then, "Futurama" had already been canceled for the first time. As such, when one sees the 31st-century characters on "Futurama" using cell phones, they are extrapolated from the cellular technologies of the present. It wouldn't be until the 2011 "Attack of the Killer App" that modern iPhone technology would be addressed on "Futurama," and the showrunners depicted a world where eyePhones were implanted directly into the users' eyeballs.

When Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" began to be developed in the late 1990s, it was not treated with the respect one might expect for a follow-up to "The Simpsons." Where Groening's previous cartoon dealt in the classic sitcom setup of a dysfunctional family, "Futurama" was a harder sell, set in the year 3000 but in a world that largely looked like the late '90s. Only with aliens and spaceships.
Fox, the channel on which the show premiered, should have been a good home. After all, "The Simpsons" was an incredible success, at that point entering its 10th year on the network. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had produced the excellent "King of the Hill" for Fox, giving the channel another animated sitcom hit. Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" was in development around the same time. All of these shows would become part of Fox's...

"Futurama" is a fantastic series, but it's destined to rank second place in creator Matt Groening's legacy. How could it not when the man has "The Simpsons" on his resume?
"The Simpsons" is a genuine American cultural institution — everyone knows who the titular family is — and while plenty complain "The Simpsons" has declined over the years, there are others who insist it's still good. It has run continuously for 30+ years, so there's still an audience for it. "Futurama," since its 1999 debut, has been on-again/off-again with cancellations and revivals (it's currently in an on-again phase thanks to Hulu).
Still, the "Futurama" team has plenty to be proud of with their show and tries not to see it as in competition with "The Simpsons." The two shows are "different animals," said "Futurama" voice actor Billy West at the London McM Expo in May 2011.

There were plenty of obstacles to bringing "Futurama" back for season 11, as there always are when a show's been off the air for nearly a decade. First, there was the pay dispute between Hulu and John Dimaggio, and then there was the fact that all the voice actors have (of course) aged 10 years since their last appearance. Although no cast member on "Futurama" has struggled as much as some of the performers on modern "Simpsons," you can still hear the strain on Billy West's characters in particular. Fry's voice is slower and deeper than it used to be, as is Professor Farnsworth's. It's not that bad if you haven't watched any older episodes recently before starting the revival, but the difference is jarring when you finish a new episode and then return to a scene in the pilot.

When Bender (John Dimaggio) belches on "Futurama," it's typically accompanied by a plume of flame. The more Bender drinks, the larger the plume. A massive beer keg, which Bender downed in one long slug, produced a sizable torch. Another burp once burned off the hair of his co-worker Amy (Lauren Tom).
Some of the burps on "Futurama" are provided by actors who actually bother to belch into the microphone. Often it's Dimaggio, and he once admitted on a commentary track that one must burp-speak the letter "I" to get the proper eructation. On the commentary track for the episode "Crimes of the Hot," the "Futurama" showrunners joked that the (unnamed) actress who provided the episode's many burps -- hundreds of robots belch at the same time -- tragically died the day after recording.
But there is one belching maestro on the "Futurama" cast, and you've likely heard his burps before.

Prior to the debut of "Futurama" in 1999, preeminent voice actor Billy West was already a towering presence in his field. He had previously played Doug Funnie in the hit Nickelodeon series "Doug," in addition to voicing the Larry Fine-like Stimpson J. Cat on "The Ren & Stimpy Show" opposite show creator John Kricfalusi. When Kricfalusi was fired for missing deadlines, West took over the role, playing both leads for the bulk of the series. West also played Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in the 1996 oddity "Space Jam" and has voiced the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee and the Red M&m in myriad TV commercials.
In the normal course of seeking more work, sometime in the late '90s, West found himself in front of the casting directors for Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's new sci-fi sitcom. West, of course, would be cast in multiple roles for "Futurama,...

On "Futurama," the character of Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) works at Planet Express as an intern and as a student of Professor Farnsworth (Billy West). She's a fashion-obsessed rich girl, the daughter of ultra-wealthy parents, who sometimes resents her wealth, but wholly embraces access to it. She's also staggeringly intelligent and often helps the Professor with his wild inventions and bizarre quests. In the 2008 "Futurama" movie "The Beast With a Billion Backs," Amy married her longtime paramour Kif (Maurice Lamarche), an invertebrate salamander-like alien. In the most recent season of "Futurama," Amy and Kif are raising three children.
Lauren Tom plays Amy incredibly well, communicating her intelligence and her ditziness in equal measures. Her wealth sometimes disconnects her, and she's sometimes gullible, but she's still incredibly affable. Sample dialogue: "Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me." The ensemble would not be complete without her,...

Time is a tricky adversary in "Futurama." It's been 24 years since the show first debuted in 1999, but in the latest season, available on Hulu, the characters clearly haven't aged 24 years. But, unlike on "The Simpsons," the characters have aged at least a little bit. Bart Simpson has been 10 years old for 35 years. Fry and Leela (Billy West and Katey Sagal) seem to have grown together as a couple and both have matured ever so slightly, implying the passage of real time. In 24 years, they have aged maybe seven. Hilariously, the Professor (West) seems to have continued aging apace, remaining the doddering old fool he always was. The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) hasn't really grown up, but he has changed over the years, remaining criminal but growing a sense of self-pity. Amy (Lauren Tom) has graduated from college, gotten married, and has three newt-like children with her invertebrate husband Kif (Maurice Lamarche).

In the "Futurama" episode "The Prisoner of Benda," Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) invents a body-swapping device that trades the consciousnesses of two users. He, being a very, very old man, would like to occupy the youthful, more active body of his employee, Amy Wong (Lauren Tom). Amy, meanwhile, longs to overeat as she once did as a child, and the Professor's bony body would allow her to indulge in her appetite. They swap bodies, but only after doing so realize that the machine doesn't allow them to swap back. A third body would allow Amy to return to her body, but then the Professor and the third party would be swapped. It was all very complicated.
Eventually, Fry (West) and Leela (Katey Sagal) are having romantic dates in the bodies of Dr. Zoidberg (West) and the Professor, and the Professor is performing in an Eastern European circus in Bender's body.

For 10 years, Friends‘ annual Thanksgiving episodes were a beloved tradition for fans of the NBC sitcom. And even after the series ended in 2004, fans have continued to rewatch these holiday installments on DVDs, syndication and streaming.
While the series skipped a proper Thanksgiving episode in season two (despite the Mockolate treats Courteney Cox’s Monica prepares, the main storyline revolves around the love triangle between Rachel Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel, David Schwimmer’s Ross and Lauren Tom’s Julie), the other nine seasons brought memorable moments ranging from Rachel’s beef-filled trifle to an action-packed yet comedic touch football game to a guest appearance from Aniston’s then real-life husband Brad Pitt, who played her high school nemesis.
These mostly standalone episodes also advanced the plot (Monica and Chandler, played by the late Matthew Perry, found out they were getting a baby and Chandler declared his love for Monica) and...

You can’t keep Futurama down. The animated series developed by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen has cheated death time and time again, and it’s been announced that Hulu has renewed Futurama for two more seasons.
Futurama has been picked up for an additional 20 episodes, which will serve as seasons 13 and 14 (or 10 and 11). Hulu originally ordered 20 episodes of Futurama last year, and the first 10 episodes wrapped up their run in September. So this renewal means that fans have 30 more episodes of Futurama to look forward to. Good news indeed.

Spoilers for "Futurama" season 11 episode 10 follow.
Okay, so this one is a bit of a reach.
At the beginning of the third-season "Futurama" episode "I Dated a Robot," Fry (Billy West) bursts into the room to declare that he had just seen the most beautiful thing imaginable. It was a glowing sphere of light emblazoned with every known color, including several Fry had never seen before. Amy (Lauren Tom) dismisses Fry's astonishment, explaining that the ball of light was merely a mascot costume worn by a college kid outside the local shoe pavilion.
Fry is incensed that his elevated experience could be pooh-poohed so easily. "For one brief moment," he said, "I felt the heartbeat of creation, and it was one with my own." Amy just shoots back with "Big deal," while the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) adds "We all feel like that all the time. You don't hear us gassin' on about it.

The latest episode of "Futurama," the season 11 finale entitled "All The Way Down," covers a lot of territory. Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) devises a new machine called the Simputron, which is able to render a full-scale simulation of the known world. Only, because he hasn't tapped a reliable power source for the process, the simulated universe is at first rendered in 8-bit.
The main action of the episode spirals into Nolanesque territory, pondering the dread-filled existential quandary of whether by now it's pretty much certain we're living in a simulation and, if so, whether that even matters. The Planet Express crew decide to send Bender (John Dimaggio) down into the body of simulation Bender, "Inception" style, and reason with them not to blow up a magnetar and thus glitch out the coding of their "universe," thereby revealing the man behind the curtain, so to speak. "Futurama" has never been shy about tackling current events and season 11 is no different. Fresh off satirizing Amazon and online shopping two episodes ago, the series' latest episode — "Rage Against The Vaccine" — is about the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this episode, Planet Earth (and Planet Express) deal with the outbreak of a new virus, dubbed Explovid-23. The virus, spread through nebulous means, apparently originates from the Sewer Mutants. Quarantining the sewers doesn't contain it, though, because Leela (Katey Sagal) was visiting her parents and becomes a superspreader when she returns to the surface.
Half the episode is Hermes (Phil Lamarr), convinced the virus is a form of zombie-ism, trying to find a cure with Voodoo. The other half is Covid jokes, several of them centered around the show's resident scientist, Professor Farnsworth (Billy West). I wouldn't say all these jokes are home runs, but (or even because) they'll be familiar to...

Episode 2 of "Futurama" season 11, "Children of a Lesser Bog," was a sequel to an episode from back in season 5, "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch." Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) and Kif Kroker (Maurice Lamarche) had children, but Kif's species (the Amphibiosians) live as tadpoles in a swamp for 20 years before maturing. The episode took advantage of the real life time lapse by having Amy and Kif finally become new parents.
The latest episode, "Rage Against The Vaccine," again referenced "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch," but only a minor gag from it. In that episode, Amy asks the Planet Express crew to drop her off to see Kif on their next delivery. Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) refuses and throws a tantrum: "We could but we won't! It's a spaceship, dammit, not a prom limousine!" Farnsworth is so furious he retreats to "The Angry Dome."
Cut to the Planet Express...
