Estonia’s film industry was provided a major boost in 2019 when Christopher Nolan’s big budget thriller Tenet opted to shoot in the former Soviet Union territory, injecting capital and prominence into the local film scene.
Allfilm, one of the country’s most successful and prolific producers, provided production services for the Nolan pic, and was given a further end-of-year boost when its feature Truth And Justice was a surprise inclusion on the International Oscar shortlist.
The company, run by producer Ivo Felt, was founded in 1995, only four years after Estonia became independent, and three years before the establishment of its national film body. Based in the capital Tallinn, where some 400,000 of the country’s 1.3 million population live, across 25 years Allfilm has produced a steady output of small budget features, patching together finance from local and international sources.

Adaptation of classic Estonian novel beat the previous box office record set by ‘Avatar’ and has been submitted for the Academy Award.
Tanel Toom is the filmmaker behind a genuine phenomenon in the history of Estonian cinema.
His feature directorial debut, Truth And Justice, broke all box records when it was released domestically this spring, recording more than 267,000 admissions and beating previous record-holder Avatar, which had 194,000 admissions. For a country with a population of just 1.3 million, it represents a huge homegrown hit.

Estonia has selected drama “Take It or Leave It” as its submission for the Oscar for best foreign-language film – the third time in five years that the country has put forward a movie from producer Ivo Felt, whose 2014 “Tangerines” received Estonia’s only Academy Award nomination.
“Take It or Leave It” beat six other contenders under consideration by a selection committee led by Edith Sepp, CEO of the Estonian Film Institute, which announced the selection Thursday. Five members of the seven-person panel picked “Take It or Leave It” as their choice for submission to the Academy.
Director Liina Triškina-Vanhatalo’s film tackles themes of responsibility, single parenthood and economic inequality. It tells the story of a 30-year-old construction worker who suddenly finds himself a single parent when his ex-girlfriend, whom he hasn’t seen for six months, has a baby girl and informs him that she’ll put the child...

Last Friday, we woke up to the tragic news that beloved chef / writer / traveler / movie-lover Anthony Bourdain had died. Among his other notable virtues and accomplishments, no one had ever put so many different meals on screen, or served them to us with such rich context.
In that spirit, we asked our panel of critics to name the most appetite-whetting meal they’ve ever seen in a movie.
In other words, this week’s question is: What’s your favorite “food movie?”

There are times when I return to Ang Lee’s “Eat Drink, Man Woman” just for the opening sequence, featuring a calvacade of delicious food being prepared by the Chu patriarch. It’s a parade of images that indicate the skill it takes to be a great chef, and the intimacy required to make a (large) family dinner. Lee’s framing is unfussy,...

There must be something really frightening in a 50-year-old woman deciding to give up her role as diligent housewife and mother, especially when it is the only one she can aspire to in a strictly patriarchal society. Manana (Nata Murvanidze), the heroine of Ana Urushadze’s strikingly daring and assured debut feature, is scary that way. Best First Feature at Locarno, winner of the Sarajevo Film Festival, and later selected as Georgia’s entry for Best Foreign Feature at the Oscars, Urushadze’s Scary Mother joins another 2017 Georgian female-centered festival darling, Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross’s poignant My Happy Family, to deliver an entrancing portrait of a woman who embarks on a mid-age quest to escape from a stultifying male-dominated world.
For Manana, the quest starts with a book. An aspiring writer who sacrificed her literary ambitions for a quiet homely life with a condescending husband and three kids,...

Scary is not exactly the word for this horror of a woman. Expecting something like a Japanese horror film, I was taken by surprise to learn that the scary part of this mother was her imagination. And to realize further that our imagination is shaped by the traumas of our childhood as ways of coping impacts powerfully on the psyche of whoever is watching it.
What begins as a happy family whose mother has taken time to write ends with the discovery that one’s imagination is more than mere images conjured up by a creative mind. Scary Mother develops this thesis into
A 50-year-old housewife struggles with her dilemma — to choose between her family life and her passion, writing, which she had repressed for years — and decides to follow her passion thus plunging herself into writing, sacrificing to it mentally and physically.

Back in 1929, author Virginia Woolf famously declared “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction,” a proto-feminist article of faith which is starkly illustrated in Georgian director Ana Urushadze’s attention-grabbing debut Scary Mother. A compelling mix of domestic drama and psychological thriller, this Georgia-Estonia co-production is already much feted on the festival circuit, taking home the top prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival last week shortly after winning for best first feature at Locarno.
