Demanding a Rajeev Ravi film on a Vineeth Sreenivasan movie ticket is silly. If you don’t like the elements that define a Vineeth Sreenivasan movie, Varshangalkku Shesham is not going to be your cup of tea; but if you are a fan of the bubble-wrapped delicateness of his movie-making, Varshangalkku Shesham is Exhibit A.
For the unreserved, Vineeth, the eldest son of noted Malayalam screenwriter and actor Sreenivasan, is a filmmaker known for his feel-good stories coated with preachy motivation and an overload of goodness. In Vineeth’s cinematic universe, everything has a warm color tone, people are nicer than usual, romances are over the top, characters who struggle in life can still afford a cozy studio apartment, every character gives free advice to the squandering male lead, and every door he apparently knocks on seems to open. Now, put all these elements together, and you get a blueprint...

There has been a resurgence of crime-investigation thrillers in Malayalam cinema. The past films, such as Cbi: Our Diary Kurippu (1988) and Anjaam Paathiraa (2020), have paved the way for some interesting stories about serial killers, following the investigation path chosen by the leads in the film. Rorschach, which was released in 2022, also provided insight on how certain revenge stories can be executed. Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the 2024 film tells the story of a tormented insomniac police officer who works to keep his thoughts at bay and finds himself embroiled in an interesting murder case.

ProfileThat Vineeth, who maintains a soft persona off-screen could go in front of the camera and be the cunning advocate in ‘Mukundan Unni’ or the loud and silly cop in ‘Kurukkan’ shows his tremendous growth as an actor.Five years before Vineeth Sreenivasan first acted in a film, he sang for Priyadarshan’s Kiluchundan Mambazham, in which his father Sreenivasan and Mohanlal, both senior actors known for their comic films together, played men who were in love with the same woman. Vineeth was then a teenager, and the song, ‘Kasavinte Thattamittu’, the title track of the movie, barely got noticed. It was his second film song – ‘Karale’ – for another Mohanlal-Sreenivasan movie Udayananu Tharam that made Vineeth a household name. The song became hugely popular and many found it adorable that Vineeth sang for his dad. These are the stories of the early 2000s. Today, Vineeth is a very versatile actor,...

ReviewIt is no mean task, playing a character well over a decade older than you, but Shanthi Krishna carries the role of the illustrious Dr Malathy with a deeply impressive conviction.Screengrab: YouTube / Bijibal OfficialIn debutant director Indu Lakshmi’s Nila, it is through sheer serendipity that the film’s protagonist Malathy (Shanthi Krishna) stumbles upon Nila, a young woman with a mellifluous voice and a distinct Kannur slang, who lives next door to her in a high-rise apartment. For the septuagenarian who has been confined to her bed due to an accident that broke her spine, Nila comes as a balm for her loneliness, someone she can talk to and share her day with. As she sings to her from the adjacent balcony, Malathy sighs with a smile while lying on her bed, immersing herself in her younger friend’s soothing voice and nodding along in contentment. It is a heartwarming friendship,...

Review‘Kurukkan’ is not poorly made. The scenes are straightforward, and at a little more than two hours, the script is not boring at all. But the writing fails in stretching out the idea.Of late, with merely a handful of movies, Vineeth Sreenivasan has made it clear that he is a tremendous performer, with a range you may not believe possible based on his off-screen soft persona. He appears to specialise in roles with a dose of villainy mixed with a lot of humour. But the humour does not always work for no fault of his, as in the case of Kurukkan, his latest film which has him in the role of a police officer, who keeps becoming the laughing stock in the force. Vineeth does not hold back, he throws his body about, unafraid to be loud or slapstick-level comical. Unfortunately, the making does not help his act.

ReviewThis is a 2-hour 23-minute drill on how smoking can kill you, delivered in the breathless fashion of a lecturer who is trying to cover the entire syllabus before the bell rings. In Pawan Kumar’s Dhoomam, Avinash (Fahadh Faasil), the marketing genius of a tobacco company, proposes that they make an anti-smoking ad that people would actually want to watch – and slyly promote smoking through it. The idea behind Dhoomam seems to be loosely based on this thought. A thriller about the ill-effects of smoking that would catch the audience’s attention. Except, there is nothing sly or subtle about the messaging. Even more so, considering her astonishing range and talent. If one were to draw a career chart of the 55-year-old actor, they would find that her progression is staggeringly consistent not only as a performer, but as someone who has casually reinvented herself at crucial junctures in her career. Bindu, however, rarely got the opportunities or scripts to flex her craft like her male contemporaries. Or let’s just say she probably couldn’t afford the work flexibility of male...

ReviewWith a marked debut, Akhil Sathyan, son of director Sathyan Anthikad, has kept it real, and admirably, no character is a saint in the film. Akhil Sathyan’s first film does not launch with fanfare or loud introductions. Paachuvum Albuthavilakkum sails off quietly with a newspaper hawker on his bike, throwing away dailies across fences, a warm song beginning in the background. It sort of sets the mood on what to expect – a movie that is not going to make a big deal about things. So Fahadh Faasil is on the screen before you can say aha! and the story chugs along like a smooth train ride. It may fall into the safe feel-good genre, but it is quite distinct in its making, letting the characters attach themselves to you, unforced. Akhil Sathyan has made his mark. The film begins in Mumbai, where the clever opening (with the newspaper hawker...

ReviewThis is the story of a heartless, unloving man with no principles, no ounce of mercy, nothing humane. He is presented as such.CrisThe team behind Mukundan Unni Associates, the film that put Vineeth Sreenivasan in a very unusual role, has clearly done a lot of preparation to present their lead character. Mukundan Unni, an advocate always seen in the clean white clothes of a lawyer-on-call, almost as if to contrast the dark thoughts we hear him think, even has an actual Instagram page. Vineeth Sreenivasan is unrecognisable as he plays this most cunning man with zero feelings for anyone other than himself. The film, which stands out in more ways than one, is the debut of editor Abhinav Sunder Nayak as director. Before you begin watching the film, you have got to keep your judgemental thoughts away. ReviewThe film is clearly written for the masses but with so many of these churned out in multiple Indian languages, there has to be more than the basic ingredients for the narrative to be exciting.CrisIn the 1990s, after he made a few films in varied genres, director Shaji Kailas had plunged straight into the heart of action cinema, where his heroes were unbreakable and no one else much mattered. Many years later when he got the script of Kaduva, Shaji took it back to a time he had thrived in, the 90s, and set it there. Prithviraj fell comfortably into the black shoes and white clothes of Kaduva Kuriachan, the newest of Shaji’s unbreakable heroes, living the life of a rich Pala businessman and estate owner, frequently getting into trouble. Back in the 90s, movies were not yet called ‘mass’ but Kaduva fits right in, written line by line,...

ReviewDirector Vineeth Kumar does a smooth job, putting you in a comfort zone and taking you away from it to hand you a mystery.CrisThere is a certain comfort when a movie starts off quietly, without making a big deal. Before you know it, Dear Friend has begun inside a house in Bengaluru where a few young people are making a mockery of their friend for his birthday, a tit for tat for previous mischiefs. Tovino Thomas, as the birthday boy Vinod, is soon out on the road wearing a hilarious superhero costume, with his underpants worn over it. The other friends are hooting and cheering along, till all of it ends badly and Vinod has an outburst. By then, you are pulled into the world of this little gang, written with clear precision by the Sharfu-Suhas combo known for Virus, along with Arjun Lal, the actor who played Mohanlal’s son in Thanmathra.

InterviewAnu recently wrote the lyrics for Rajisha Vijayan's 'June', which is a young girl's coming-of-age story.Neelima MenonFacebook/Anu Elizabeth JoseTraditionally, writing poetry and penning film lyrics have had an incandescent connection. Because every film lyricist began as a poet once upon a time. But Anu Elizabeth Jose admits to have never written poetry in her life. Writing, she says, started by accident at her Plus Two farewell party. She wrote some random lines for a song and that was the beginning. Later, while doing her Engineering at Fisat, she gamely wrote a few more lines for a senior’s album which was first made in Tamil and later in Malayalam (which she wrote). For someone who had only studied Malayalam till the 10th, writing lyrics for Malayalam film songs still seems sort of unbelievable. June is her 17th film as a lyricist, after making her debut in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Thattathin Marayathu.

KollywoodWhile the actors have delivered excellent performances, the film fails to question systemic oppression.Priyanka ThirumurthyWhen Sarvam Thaala Mayam's poster first released, the composition of the image immediately sparked interest. Launched into the air, looking up into space with a mridangam in hand was actor Gv Prakash. And what was really intriguing were the contrasting religious symbols around his neck - a cross and a rudraksha kottai. On either side of the actor stood two temples, pushed to the background, colourised much lighter and yet undoubtedly standing out - much like the caste-blind attitude of the film itself. Director Rajiv Menon has returned after a hiatus of 18 years to tell the story of a Dalit Christian, Peter Johnson (Gv Prakash), and his aspirations to become a mrindangam player. Peter, the son of a mrindagam maker, Johnson (Kumaravel) is a natural musician who grudgingly agrees to help his father in his business.
