Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, and Alan Rickman (in one of his final performances) star in the critically acclaimed modern war thriller "Eye in the Sky," which is widening its release in theaters this Friday, April 1. In this exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek, Helen Mirren and director Gavin Hood discuss the complexities of the timely story, which is meant to engage and challenge the viewer into questioning what is the right action to take.
In "Eye in the Sky," Mirren plays Colonel Katherine Powell, a U.K.-based military intelligence officer who leads a secret mission to capture a terrorist group living in a safehouse in Nairobi, Kenya. When she learns that the group plans to carry out a suicide attack, she changes the objective to kill the terrorists. But here's the major complication. When American drone pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) targets the safehouse for destruction, he reports a 9-year-old girl entering the kill zone.

Gavin Hood showed a talent for handling complex issues with brilliant skill in “Tsotsie,” a film about a small-time thug that was both a thriller and a balanced exploration of the intersection of crime, poverty and AIDS in South Africa’s slums. Now the South African director brings that knack for taut thrillers with nuance, balance and humanity to the morally murky subject of drone warfare, in Eye In The Sky.
Hood takes a neutral tone in this gripping thriller, where a joint British and American mission to capture a British national, who has become an Islamic terrorist leader in Kenyan, is complicated when their remote surveillance, the “eye in the sky,” reveals a suicide bomber mission in progress. The unexpected discovery seems to change the mission from capture to kill, but that decision is debated between politicians, diplomats, military leaders across international lines, in a...

Gavin Hood’s pulse-pounding war thriller Eye in the Sky may share a thing or two with the Ethan Hawke-fronted Good Kill – namely the moral minefield that is drone warfare – but as our review coming out of Tiff 2015 attests, Hood’s starry drama is a competent and thought provoking feature.
Headlining that ensemble as Colonel Katherine Powell is Helen Mirren, flanked by a standout cast that also includes Aaron Paul and the late, great Alan Rickman. It’s Paul that steps into the hotseat as drone pilot Steve Watts, who faces a moral and ethical dilemma when a helpless nine-year-old girl stumbles into a targeted hotspot, thrusting the mission – and her own safety – into jeopardy.

After this year’s Good Kill seemed to come and arrive without much attention, another war drama surrounding drones will try to capture audiences this spring. Eye in the Sky, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival this fall, was picked up by Bleecker Street, and now we have the first trailer.
Starring Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman, and Barkhad Abdi, it comes from director Gavin Hood, who gave us the disappointing Ender’s Game and ultra-disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but is thankfully returning to smaller-scale drama here. The story centers on Paul’s character getting into a difficult situation when preparing for a drone strike. Check out the first trailer below.

Here's the first trailer for Eye in the Sky, a new thriller about drone warfare that hails from Ender's Game and X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Gavin Hood. Hood hasn't really captured my attention as a director (I admittedly haven't seen all of his films), but at least he has a great cast in this movie, including Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, and Alan Rickman. It looks like Iain Glen (Game of Thrones' Ser Jorah) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) also make appearances here, too. This is the second major movie in recent memory to question the morality of drone strikes, following Ethan Hawke's Good Kill.

One thought kept repeating in my mind over and over again while watching Eye in the Sky: criticism, while important, is incredibly easy. Sitting back and critiquing the decisions or work of another person is virtually always done from a position of security. Arguments made by critics should be made and received with the understanding that sitting outside of a particular situation and passing judgment is a completely different exercise than being in the middle of that situation, having to make difficult decisions with actual stakes behind them, bearing responsibility for outcomes that can actually affect any number of people. This is certainly applicable to the relationship between film critic and filmmaker; it’s also one of the ideas running throughout this movie.
The film centers on a decision surrounding a drone strike. This is one of those hot button issues that generate a lot of opinions, but this...
