All season long, "Falling Skies" had been building up to the use of the Volm weapon. Finally, after several setbacks along the way, they were ready to fire it at one of the massive Espheni towers. The rebels set a fake run for Chicago to throw the Espheni off their trail, while their true target was Boston.
In the end, the weapon worked, the tower fell and the Espheni defensive grid over the planet dropped. When it did, the Volm were able to come in. As it turns out, their arrival didn't mark the end at all, though the Volm seemed to want it to be the end for the human race. Not extermination, but relocation and protection.
They said that the indigenous populations of the planets they've helped have never resisted relocation and protection. But the humans want to fight. This is their war. It's something new for the Volm,...

Jonathan Welsh 2012 Honda Cr-v
During Super Bowl Xlvi Honda released an ad for its 2012 Cr-v in which actor Matthew Broderick spoofed his role in the 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” It is a funny commercial, chock-full of references, some well hidden, to a movie memorable to me and just about any teenager of the 1980s.
The spot made me feel good, then bad.
I have to admit grudgingly that I enjoy moving into the demographic sweet spot for a broad range of marketers,...

Jonathan Welsh Zero S electric motorcycle.
The International Motorcycle Show started in New York today, so the Jacob Javits Center will be awash in chrome-crusted cruisers weighing more than 600 pounds and packing car-size engines, and screaming superbikes with enough horsepower to fly a four-passenger airplane.
But some of the most intriguing machines at the show are small, light and nearly silent.
Electric motorcycles powered by lithium batteries are beginning to look like contenders in a bike market that is increasingly concerned about fuel efficiency,...

Jonathan Welsh 2012 Volkswagen Passat
When Volkswagen unveiled its 2012 Passat sedan at the Detroit auto show in January, it took a lot of jabs from people who said its slab-sided creation was too dull and generic-looking. Was it styled after a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord or other mid-size automotive appliance?
But to me it looked nothing like those uninspired rides. I thought its sleek, angular shape screamed “1985 Audi 5000S,” which is one of my favorite cars of all time. After driving...

Jonathan Welsh Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty Black Ops Edition
While driving the new Call of Duty Black Ops edition Jeep Wrangler on the Garden State Parkway I noticed another Wrangler — an older one — in my rear-view mirror. It quickly caught up and then drove next to me in the left lane.
The twenty-something driver and passenger looked over my Jeep for awhile before accelerating away. They didn’t wave or give an approving nod, and their gaze was expressionless.

Jonathan Welsh Jonathan Frierson drives Sarah Palin’s tour bus
After 30 years of driving big rigs and buses, it takes more than narrow streets and New York City traffic to faze Jonathan Frierson. You just have to be patient and careful, he says.
Make that very careful. After all, there are cameras following his bus wherever it goes and the slightest misstep or fender bender could reflect badly on his passenger, Sarah Palin.
The former Alaska governor — who some political...

Jonathan Welsh Racing driver Danica Patrick spoke with Driver’s Seat about next Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.
When 33 cars sweep past the green flag to start the Indianapolis 500 next Sunday, Danica Patrick will have a lot of work ahead of her. After qualifying 26th for the big race the sport’s most successful female driver will be fighting through a crowd if she hopes to be in position for a possible win.
She will also have to deal with the track’s many disconcerting quirks.

Jonathan Welsh Kiss shows off a Mini decorated in the band’s signature style.
Do you ever wonder what happened to your favorite bands from the glittery glam-rock era of the 1970s?
The group Kiss, known for wild makeup and many comebacks, was busy this morning at the New York International Auto Show helping BMW’s Mini division kick off a marketing campaign for the Mini Countryman crossover utility vehicle. And I think you may be able to book them for your kid’s birthday,...
