Some films begin with a grander idea than one they can actually execute. For a film, it’s good to have a grand concept, no doubt, but it’s better when the film knows that it doesn’t and begins from an honest space. Fast Charlie, the 2023 Pierce Brosnan film, never tries to become ‘bigger,’ a ‘spectacle,’ and therein lies its strength. With some clever writing from Richard Wenk and Victor Gischler, Fast Charlie benefits from Brosnan’s on-screen persona and Morena Baccarin’s turn as a high-iq taxidermist who just knows how to calmly deal with the criminal world if ever it comes too close to destroying her own. There is James ‘Jimmy’ Caan in a short but emotionally powerful role as well, and he plays his bit well in the penultimate film of his career. Through some engaging twists and turns, the film becomes a refreshing action thriller...

One of the great things about working for JoBlo is that, over the years, I’ve had the pleasure to speak with some of my heroes. Being a child of the eighties, I tend to be most fascinated by the people I grew up watching. So, speaking to Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and the great Don Johnson have consistently ranked with my fondest moments here with the site. Of course, one of the guys I’ve always wanted to talk to was the great Pierce Brosnan.
Given that I’m the guy behind James Bond Revisited, one could easily imagine why he was a bucket list interview of mine. However, beyond his work as 007, I’m still a fan, particularly of his movie The Matador, one of my favorites. Pierce has a new film out the week called Fast Charlie, which features him once again playing a hitman who’s...

Although much of the film and television industry gets recognition for its on-screen performances, behind-the-scenes talents like Richard Wenk have contributed greatly to its growth. Much of the success of cinema goes to the dedication and creativity of directors, screenwriters, editors, and producers. Like several other directors, Richard Wenk is also recognized for his written and co-written screenplays. The Metuchen, New Jersey-born writer, has written screenplays for several Box Office hits and collaborated with top directors and actors. Although Wenk isn’t a household name, his reputation and success precede him in certain Hollywood circles. Honoring his contributions to the film...

The short and shaggy tale of an aging hitman (Pierce Brosnan) who realizes it’s time to either get out of the game or die trying, Phillip Noyce’s “Fast Charlie” is the kind of movie you’ve seen a thousand times before. It was adapted from the 2003 Victor Gischler novel “Gun Monkeys,” which is the kind of book you’ve read a thousand times before. And yet, the difference here — the most crucial reason why this particular version of that well-weathered story is weirdly charming instead of trite — is that Noyce’s film treats its ultra-familiar tropes as more of a feature than a bug. They’re the lingua franca of a Southern-fried thriller set in the clogged drain at the bottom of the criminal underworld; a place that everybody talks about leaving, but nobody ever seems to escape. Not while they’re still breathing, anyway.

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan has proven why he’s one of the greatest to have ever played James Bond with his new movie, Fast Charlie (2023). Critics and audiences who watched its premiere at the 2023 Mill Valley Film Festival on October 7, 2023, have praised the movie’s direction, story, and casting. Fast Charlie, an action thriller, was adapted from Victor Gischler‘s 2001 novel Gun Monkeys. Pierce Brosnan hasn’t returned to his James Bond roots, but he’s definitely channeling 007 in the trailer for “Fast Charlie,” the crime thriller that’s also notable for featuring actor James Caan’s final performance.
Brosnan plays Charlie Swift, a contract killer with a serious on-the-job headache: The victim of his most recent assassination is missing his head. That’s a problem if Swift wants to prove the job was done and get paid for it, and more importantly keep the man who hired him — a ruthless New Orleans gangster — happy.
“I have to convince a certain person that the body in that trunk out there is indeed Rolo,” Swift states.
“Something happen to his face?” Marcie, who’s played by Morena Baccarin, says in the video clip.
“It’s missing. Along with the rest of his head,” Charlie answers.

One sign of a terrific actor is that he can hold you even when he’s not doing anything. Pierce Brosnan is like that. I wouldn’t call him a minimalist, though he never wastes a word or a movement; he has the precision of an expensive watch. Yet as he’s gotten older, his inner quality of elegant puckish cutthroat gravitas has only grown stronger. You’re hooked by him when he’s not doing anything in part because he projects the unwavering confidence that you will be.
That makes him the ideal actor to play a seen-it-all hit man — who also happens to be a highly civilized gourmet cook — in Phillip Noyce’s “Fast Charlie,” a Deep South crime drama that may be the twelfth movie this year to center on a hit man. But the new hit-man movies, like David Fincher’s “The Killer” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,...

Vertical has picked up domestic distribution rights for “Fast Charlie,” TheWrap has learned. The Pierce Brosnan-starring crime caper contains the final onscreen performance from the late James Caan. The picture will premiere on Oct. 7 at the Mill Valley Festival. Alongside Brosnan and Caan, who died in July of 2022 at the age of 82, “Fast Charlie” stars Morena Baccarin. Palisades Park Pictures will handle overseas sales.
Per the official logline, “Charlie Swift [Brosnan]is a fixer with a problem: the thug he’s whacked is missing his head and Charlie will only be paid if the body can be identified. Enter Marcie Kramer, the victim’s ex-wife and a woman with all the skills Charlie needs.” Phillip Noyce directed a screenplay from Richard Wenk. The picture also stars Gbenga Akinnagbe, Toby Huss and Sharon Gless.

Vertical is springing into action by snagging the U.S. distribution rights for Fast Charlie, the final film starring the late James Caan. Pierce Brosnan and Morena Baccarin lead the cast, with the film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 7. Fast Charlie takes inspiration from Victor Gischler’s 2001 novel Gun Monkeys.
Here’s a synopsis for Gischler’s novel via Amazon:

When a fancy new-wave hood, hungry for the primo Orlando territory Charlie enforces, offs most of Charlie’s boys in a bloody mob takeover, our man steps in to make things right. On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

“The Equalizer 3” is here, once again directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington. This time around Washington’s Robert McCall finds himself in beautiful Italy, where he runs afoul of the local mafia and has to kill them all in increasingly creative ways. It’s supposed to be the last in the franchise that was based off of the 1980s TV series, but this could be the best of the bunch, with Washington in top form.
TheWrap spoke to director Fuqua about his fifth (!) collaboration with Washington, bringing things home with “Equalizer 3,” his experience working on Disney’s “King Arthur” and the version of the “Miami Vice” he briefly developed with Michael Mann.
Action franchises are built in different ways — sometimes the stunts come first and the story is modeled around that, sometimes locations inform story. How do you build “Equalizer” movies?
It starts with: What is the movie about?...

While it’s certainly nice to get a change of scenery from the Boston travelogue of the first two films in the Equalizer series, Italy, at least on paper, might seem like an odd, random choice of locale for Antoine Fuqua to wrap up the trilogy. But not long after The Equalizer 3 opens on an Italian man and his son cruising toward a Sicilian vineyard, it all starts to make sense: The fertile soil and pathways to the main villa are strewn with mutilated bodies, all the way down into a basement where the shadowy figure of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) looks upon the aforementioned man with a casually predatory indifference.
Those opening minutes justify the trek to Italy more than any of the delicious-looking cappuccinos that McCall downs later in the film. Despite always being on the side of swift justice for the little guys of the world,...

Moments into the inelegantly titled The Equalizer 3, the trilogy capper that reunites director Antoine Fuqua, and screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2), with two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, two men -- one obviously frightened by what he's seen and heard, another maddened by the intrusion on his private property -- take an unplanned tour of an Italian winery decorated with the dismembered bodies and spilled blood of the latter’s henchmen, before encountering Washington’s title character, Robert McCall, an ex-dia-agent-assassin-turned-vigilante-hero, sitting quietly in a backroom, guns pointed at his head. As the fastidious, stoic McCall carefully folds a wine or blood-covered napkin in half, the scene unfolds in predictable, predictably satisfying fashion. MacCall speaks, softly and...

Director Antoine Fuqua still remembers his first day on set with his now-five-time star Denzel Washington. It was early 2001, one of the first days of production on “Training Day,” which would eventually garner Washington his second Oscar (and co-star Ethan Hawke his first Oscar nomination). Fuqua was eager to show Washington and Hawke some of the day’s footage, but Washington demurred. As Fuqua recalls, Washington assured the director, making only his third film, that he was the one “flying this plane.”
It’s an experience Fuqua hasn’t forgotten — that moment of a master like Washington assuring the filmmaker that he trusted him and was down to honor his vision — and one that has guided the pair through five films, including the three-film franchise “The Equalizer.” The duo wrap the series with this week’s “The Equalizer 3,” which sees Washington’s vigilante Robert McCall taking his particular set...

Returning for the third installment in the gritty action saga, The Equalizer 3 aims to deepen the mysterious world of Robert McCall. With Denzel Washington’s undeniable charm at its helm and Antione Fuqua’s seasoned direction, the film promises a continuation of its intense street-justice narrative. Yet, does it deliver the high-octane thrills we’ve come to expect, or does it falter under the weight of its own legacy? In addition to Washington, the film also stars Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, Andrea Scarduzio, and Remo Girone. Richard Wenk returns as screenwriter.
The film starts with one of the bloodiest intro scenes, beginning with Robert McCall (Washington) captured by thugs. Just who is the Equalizer? Despite a hit TV show in the 1980s and another with Queen Latifah still running, that title has become synonymous with Denzel Washington, who returns as government-assassin-turned-vigilante Robert McCall. Billed as the final chapter in a trilogy, “The Equalizer 3” sees McCall finding community in a picturesque part of Italy and being forced to protect its people from the mafia. The film also reteams Washington with director Antoine Fuqua for the fifth time, and their comfort with one another ensures a seamless action movie that might not attract new fans, but should play well to those already fond of this franchise.
Fuqua throws the audience directly into the action. The camera follows a man as he walks through an Italian vineyard strewn with bodies, knives and bullet wounds jutting out of them. McCall must be close by, a point reinforced by Marcelo Zarvos’ quietly alarming score.

To enjoy the (allegedly) final entry in Antoine Fuqua’s “The Equalizer” trilogy, it’s not at all crucial to understand the particulars of how former Marine and intelligence operative Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) lands in Italy for this latest outing. It’s safe to assume the vigilante is there to kick some bad-dude butt, with more convoluted revelations to come. Wherever Robert McCall lands, even a luxurious private winery, there are villains afoot for him to kill off in the most gruesome manners, details be damned.
And “The Equalizer 3” opens with Robert skulking around said winery, offing dark-clad mercenary types, and apparently setting right some sort of horrible injustice. As we might expect, he gets much more than he bargained for — and so will fans of Fuqua’s brutal action series, which closes out in fine style.

Carnage in Sicily: A winery overturned, its workers bloodied and brutalized lying dead on the floor. It’s hard to tell if it’s Merlot or viscera pouring across the pricy marble. The vineyard’s owner snakes wends his way through the carnage, down the stone stairs to the basement, where one man sits waiting for him. Action sets, but with a character bent, unlike those in Fast & Furious.

Sure, Washington’s Robert McCall could opt to flip a table against an Italian mobster in a restaurant, but there’s something more revealing about his gravitas and precision as he sticks his thumb into the nerve of a killer’s hand instead, while softly detailing what could be such villain’s end days. The action has to always feel like it’s part of the dialogue.

Honestly, what can't Denzel Washington do? Last seen on the big screen delivering Shakespearean monologues like an absolute force of nature in Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth," the star has already lined up his next major project with Ridley Scott for his "Gladiator" sequel and continues to add action cred to his name with the ongoing "Equalizer" series. But pretty much the only thing out of the 68-year-old Washington's control is the passing of time and, despite hardly aging a day in the last decade or two, director Antoine Fuqua has sought to get in front of that issue for a potential follow-up to "The Equalizer 3" down the line.

Denzel Washington’s time as Robert McCall in The Equalizer franchise is ending, but that’s not keeping Antoine Fuqua from thinking about other ways to explore the storied character. Some badasses are too enduring for retirement, but why not move back if you can’t move forward? I’m talking about an Equalizer prequel. After all, who wouldn’t be game to see McCall in his prime, dispatching criminals and dismantling syndicates with precision and style? Speaking with Antoine Fuqua about The Equalizer 3, we touched on the concept of an Equalizer prequel and who would play the character in an early display of bold moves and badassery.
When we asked Fuqua what he thought about developing an Equalizer prequel, he agreed it would be an idea worth exploring.

“Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff… Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person — the younger version?” Fuqua said to NME. “I’ve had that conversation with Richard Wenk [Equalizer series screenwriter] quite a bit.”
The concept hasn’t been put to Washington just yet.
“It’s all so fresh and new,” Fuqua said. “I’m still watching [the technology]. I’ve watched Harrison Ford’s film (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and I know there’s other movies coming out… And I...

“The Equalizer 3” has been touted as the final film in the Denzel Washington action series, but director Antoine Fuqua isn’t closing the door on more Robert McCall. In fact, Fuqua has even considered de-aging his leading man for a continuation of the franchise in the form of an origin story.
“I definitely thought about it a lot,” Fuqua told NME in a new interview. “Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff… Is there a story to be told about how [McCall] became this person — the younger version. The Equalizer franchise’s Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has lived a storied life, taking a bite out of crime and stomping gangsters like Goombas under Mario’s boots. Before battling Russian thugs in 2014’s The Equalizer or taking on rogue CIA agents in 2018’s The Equalizer 2 and the Italian Mafia in The Equalizer 3, he undoubtedly tangled with other villains. For fans who want to see a young McCall in action, director Antoine Fuqua thinks it could happen, and technology could be the key to making it all possible.
Speaking with NME, Fuqua said he’s considered de-aging Washington for an Equalizer origin story. We’ve seen actors de-aged more and more lately, with the latest example being for a lengthy sequence in James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. De-aging tech used to look pretty rough, but AI programs have advanced in recent years, providing...

Low end forecasts have Sony’s Denzel Washington starring, Antoine Fuqua-directed action threequel, The Equalizer 3 at $30M+ over 4-days.
Some box office sources even think the sequel, which was shot in Italy, has a shot at $40M and that’s because of The Equalizer 3‘s big first choice numbers with guys over 25. Even Women over 25 is solid. The one pause is that the nine-year-old franchise’s audience is getting older, and that demo as we all know has a gradual pace to cinemas.
There are no other wide releases over Labor Day weekend, and National Cinema Day isn’t occurring over that four day holiday weekend like last year. Sony has Gran Turismo officially opening wide on Aug. 25, despite the fact that it’s been holding previews since last week.
The Equalizer at the end of September 2014 opened to $34.1M and finaled at $101.5M domestic. The Equalizer 2...

Since Sony and Disney made a deal about Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which Tom Holland debuted as the web-slinger in 2016, Sony decided to put more effort into building their own cinematic universe, officially called Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, in which Spider-Man still hasn’t appeared, but some other characters associated with him have.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (without Spider-Man in it) kicked off with ‘Venom’ in 2018, and since then, it spawned two more movies; ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ and ‘Morbius.’ Neither of these movies was critically acclaimed, but both ‘Venom’ movies were commercially successful, which can’t be said for ‘Morbius.’
Still, even though we are now used to getting half-hits and misses from Sony, we can still expect a lot of content in the future, particularly next year when we’re set to get three new movies set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, including ‘Kraven the Hunter,...

Kraven The Hunter Possible Storyline: Sergei Kravinoff, better known as Kraven, is an iconic antagonist from the Spider-Man universe, created by the creative minds of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
He is widely recognized as one of the founding members of the Sinister Six, a notorious group of supervillains. The 2014 film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, gave a subtle tease of his potential appearance in the cinematic universe.
In the Marvel Comics, Kraven’s backstory portrays him as a Russian nobleman, whose family was compelled to flee to America during the upheaval of the February Revolution in 1917.
Upon arriving in the new world, Kraven’s passion for hunting evolved into an obsession, and he soon set his sights on the ultimate prey: Spider-Man. His primary goal was to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter by capturing the elusive web-slinger.

It's been a longer than planned journey to screens for Kraven The Hunter, which sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing a version of the classic Spider-Man villain, but it'll finally land in October. As has previously hinted, this will be an origin story, with the character turned into more of an antihero. Check out the first trailer…
In this take on the character's story — directed by Jc Chandor from a script by Richard Wenk, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, a man with some serious daddy issues. Pushed by his father to be a strong hunter, he ends up instead attacked by a lion and left for dead. But something happens with mixing bloods and he becomes a powerful warrior — who swears to take down the evil his father pours into the world.

After the meme-able disaster of Morbius, Sony is back to try again with another unestablished Spider-Man villain solo movie. This time, they’re taking a decidedly R-rated approach, as seen in the first trailer for Kraven the Hunter.
The film stars a jacked Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven, the son of a megalomaniacal crime lord and hunter (Russell Crowe). On a safari to hunt lions, Sergei’s dad leaves him for dead after showing weakness in front of the great cat. In a bit of comic-inaccurate-but-hey-we-gotta-get-him-powers-somehow sci-fi, it seems Sergei’s blood gets mixed with that of a lion, granting him apex predator abilities and apparently a direct line of communication to animals.
He grows up and decides to use his vicious powers to counteract his father’s criminal enterprises; “My father puts evil into the world; I take it out,” he tells Ariana DeBose’s character, reportedly the voodoo priestess Calypso.

As you'll likely have seen by now thanks to the first trailer, Denzel Washington's Robert McCall is back back back for the third – and apparently — final chapter of the Equalizer movies.
This latest outing for the government assassin-turned-doer-of-good-deeds (even if he often still resorts to violence to get the job done) finds McCall on Italy's picturesque Amalfi Coast, though plans for a relatively more relaxing time are soon scuppered when locals ask for his help to deal with a powerful criminal element.
Naturally, we took the opportunity to speak to returning Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua about why he chose to set the new movie outside the US, the main man's headspace, new danger and an old friend…

More usually found stalking around Massachusetts, the third Equalizer sees Robert McCall instead hanging out at Italian cafes on the Amalfi coast. So is this Fuqua, Denzel Washington and co.

Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington returns for one final outing as Robert McCall in Columbia Pictures’ The Equalizer 3. The third film of the action franchise’s intense official trailer shows the former government assassin is just as lethal now as he was when Washington first played him in the 2014 film.
The third and final film reunites Washington with his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning nearly 20 years after they made that action movie together.
Antoine Fuqua directed The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, and returns to direct The Equalizer 3. Richard Wenk, screenwriter of the first two films, also returns. Fuqua, Washington, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Clayton Townsend, Alex Siskin, and Tony Eldridge produce, with David Bloomfield, Tarak Ben Ammar, and Andy Mitchell executive producing.

In between doling out Oscar-worthy performances and making Shakespearean monologues feel like something you haven't heard a thousand times before, Denzel Washington has spent the past two decades cracking skulls and taking names, going back to at least "Man on Fire." In fact, he's been doing it so long, his co-star in Tony Scott's sublime 2004 action-thriller, Dakota Fanning, had the chance to go off and grow up into a fully-fledged adult actor. That noise you just heard was the sound of millions of Millennials popping the vertebrae in their backs as they abruptly jerked upright, crying out in terror.
Washington and Fanning are now in the process of reuniting for "The Equalizer 3." The vigilante movie franchise is based on the 1980s series of the same name, which was also re-imagined as a TV show starring Queen Latifah in 2021. Both reboots retain the basic setup of the original show,...

Sony film boss Tom Rothman took a moment during his studio’s CinemaCon presentation Monday night to nod to a new Nrg study that investigates the most popular movie stars in Hollywood.
Rothman explained that if the pundits are to believed, “movie stars don’t matter anymore,” adding that he really hopes “all my competitors believe that shit” because he most emphatically disagrees. “True movie stars matter more than ever,” Rothman said. “They are just rarer than ever. Another year, another CinemaCon! /Film's own Ben Pearson is attending the yearly film showcase in Las Vegas, and has the first word on some really cool exclusive trailers and footage presentations—including the upcoming Spider-Man villain spin-off "Kraven The Hunter." CinemaCon debuted some clips from the film which comes out in the fall, and needless to say, there is a lot to discuss.
The movie is set to be the fourth installment in Sony's Spider-Man cinematic universe — yes, here's another one to remember — after their other villain films "Venom," "Venom: Let There Be Carnage," and 2022's favorite meme "Morbius." Aaron Taylor-Johnson beamed in to Las Vegas’ CinemaCon on Monday to show the first footage from his anticipated Marvel film “Kraven the Hunter” — an ultraviolent spree of blood and throbbing biceps that pleased the annual convention of theater owners.
Taylor-Johnson called the J.C. Chandor-directed project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He then gave an answer to what he deemed “the internet’s biggest question” — whether the film would receive an R-rating.
“Fuck yeah, it will be rated R,” the star said to huge applause from the Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino.
In the world premiere footage, Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven is a tactical stalker with a penchant for cropped leather vests and five-star hair. He shreds his victims viscerally, often with primitive claw-shaped weapons. Blood pours freely over the screen and, at one intense moment,...
