Simu Liu fights his way into a big-screen blockbuster this weekend with Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." And if you leave that film thinking, "Where can I see more of that handsome fellow?", I have the perfect answer: "Kim's Convenience." The Canadian sitcom has often been compared to another show from the Great White North, "Schitt's Creek," and perhaps that's all you need to know. But if you want a few more details on "Kim's Convenience," stick around.

Kim’s Convenience star Jean Yoon has come forth with her own claims about the recently ended CBC/Netflix comedy, on the heels of TV son Simu Liu expressing some frustrations.
Earlier this month, Liu penned a lengthy Facebook post which, in part, took issue with the upcoming spinoff Strays, in which cast member Nicole Power will star/reprise her role as Shannon. “I love and am proud of Nicole, and I want the show to succeed for her… but I remain resentful of all of the circumstances that led to the one non-Asian character getting her own show,” Liu opined.

Kim Convenience‘s Jean Yoon, who stars as the family matriarch, said that a lack of Asian women in the comedy’s writers room made the her time on the series less than ideal.
On Sunday, just days after co-star Simu Liu post a lengthy Facebook post revealing her experience on the series, Yoon defended the Shang-Chi star against The Globe and Mail TV critic John Doyle. The writer dissected Liu’s criticisms and shared that the series had a number of Asian woman writers. Yoon came to her on-screen son’s defense.
“Dear sir, as an Asian Canadian woman, a Korean-Canadian woman w more experience and knowledge of the world of my characters, the lack of Asian female, especially Korean writers in the writers room of Kims made my life Very Difficult & the experience of working on the painful show,” she responded to Doyle.

Some cancellations hit harder than others, and the cancellation of Canadian hit Kim's Convenience is one of those. The fifth season of the comedy about a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store just hit Netflix in the U.S. on June 2, and fans might be surprised to know that it's also the last season, despite the fact that the show was originally renewed through season six. The creators of the show, Ins Choi and Kevin White, decided to leave after the fifth season, and the production company, Thunderbird Films, chose not to continue with the series. However, the world of Kim's Convenience is not going away. Choi and White are now focusing on a spinoff called Strays, which focuses...

Kim’s Convenience stars Andrew Phung and Nicole Power have landed their next projects at Canada’s CBC, less than a month after the comedy’s producers said the series would end with its fifth season. Their latest titles will launch during the upcoming 2021-22 broadcast season.
Phung, who appears in the Korean Canadian family comedy as Kimchee, has teamed with The Secret Marathon‘s Scott Townsend to create Run the Burbs. Phung will star as a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids. There's good news and bad news when it comes to the heartfelt and hilarious comedy Kim's Convenience. The good news is, its fifth season should be arriving on Netflix in only a matter of weeks. The bad news? The fifth season will also be its last.
According to TVLine, the fifth and final season is expected to arrive on Netflix "shortly after" the series finale airs on April 13 on the CBC in Canada. This follows the pattern of similar deals that Netflix frequently has with its licensed titles, with new seasons arriving on the streaming platform within just weeks of their linear network finales. In previous years, Kim's Convenience has waited a very short time between airing its season finale on CBC and the whole season dropping on Netflix internationally. For instance, the fourth season aired its season finale on March 31, 2020, and the entire fourth season arrived on Netflix the very next day,...

The cancellation of Kim's Convenience has come as something as a surprise for everyone. After five seasons, the hit comedy will be wrapping up with its upcoming season, which is earlier than everyone had planned. The reason for the cancellation, however, seems to be pretty simple: the show's creators left to pursue other opportunities.
"To our amazing fans: Authenticity of storytelling is at the center of the success of Kim's Convenience. At the end of production on Season 5, our two co-creators confirmed they were moving onto other projects. Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special," the show's producers shared in a statement posted on the show's official Twitter account.
The producers also acknowledged the show's popularity and its significance, thanking the cast, crew, and fans...

Kevin White, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing survivor who died of a sudden illness this week at his home, was training to compete in his third marathon as a way of coping with the tragedy. "I think the Boston Marathon was his best form of therapy and rehabilitation because it proved to him that he wouldn't be negatively impacted by that day," White's training coach Rick Muhr tells People. "For most runners it is a celebration just to finish but I think his level of celebration went well beyond just finishing the race. He was celebrating his life. It was his...

It has been easy to rip into the Madden NFL franchise over the past decade or so. Ever since the exclusive deal with the National Football League was made back in 2004, the franchise has been mercilessly called out for stagnant gameplay and little year to year improvement. Some of this criticism has been warranted, of course, however, it can sometimes feel like people are bashing on it because it is popular franchise that doesn’t need to change due to its massive sales. That hasn’t stopped EA Tiburon from constantly tweaking the formula, though, with this year’s Madden NFL 16 representing another year forward for the series.
Before you even get the chance to hop into training camp or online play, Madden throws you into a semi-scripted SuperBowl 50 match-up between pre-season contenders, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Playing like a more advanced version of last year’s Panthers/Seahawks showdown,...

On Wednesday night (January 5) at the Td Garden in Boston, the Boston Celtics toppled the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 105-103. Rajon Rondo turned in a triple-double, Ray Allen dropped in 31 points and Paul Pierce hit the go-ahead shot with less than a second to go to seal the victory. It was a good night in the arena, but on this day in 1975, the results were less positive. While waiting outside to purchase tickets to a Led Zeppelin concert, approximately 2,000 fans managed to pry open the doors of the old Boston Garden and wreak havoc on the inside.
Some time shortly after midnight, the rowdy group of fans got inside the building and began to run amok, throwing bottles and destroying property inside the essentially empty venue. The fans got so out of control that management decided to open the ticket windows hours before they were supposed to...

Sometimes you can see the moments when history could have turned one way or another. Late in James Brown's Boston concert on April 5, 1968, fans start to rush the stage. They're mostly excited kids, but it's the day after Martin Luther King's assassination, and tensions are high, to say the least. Across America, other cities have already erupted into riots. Boston mayor Kevin White—a recently elected progressive who narrowly defeated his crypto-racist opponent—heard conflicting views about whether he should let the show go on; ultimately, he roped in the local PBS station to broadcast it, in hopes of giving black residents in the heavily segregated city something to do other than destroy Boston in anger. It worked, until the chaotic stage-rush. Then Brown stops the show, with a lot of desperate calls of "Wait a minute!" What he says isn't eloquent, but it works: "We're black. Don't make us.

Toronto -- After hitting ratings pay dirt last season with rookie series including "Sophie," "The Border" and "Heartland" -- developed as pilots with indie producers -- the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. looks to build on that success with its latest round of pilot orders.
Among the pilots contending for slots on the schedule are romantic comedy "18 to Life" from Gala Films and the spy drama "The B Team" from "Corner Gas" creators Verite Films and Kevin White Prods.
Also vying for pickup are the Original Pictures drama "Throwing Stones"; Pierre Films' Newfoundland-set dramedy "Republic of Doyle," about a father and son who work as private investigators; and "Abroad," a back-door pilot/telefilm co-produced with Fremantle Entertainment about a Canadian journalist in London.
The pubcaster saw its ratings spike during the recent WGA strike as U.S. series on rivals CTV and Global Television went into reruns or were replaced by reality TV series. Series developed at the Cbc also have been enjoying success abroad: ABC Family picked up "Sophie," Fox acquired U.S. format rights to "Little Mosque on the Prairie" and Fireworks International has sold "The Border" into Europe.
The Cbc recently ordered two dramas from its 2009 pilot slate: the psychological drama "The Session" and the Calgary-set drama "The Wild Roses."...
