The face of Knbc news is changing dramatically. At least five veteran newscasters at Los Angeles NBC owned Knbc have accepted “voluntary early retirement” buyouts and will leave the station at the end of the year, sources confirmed to Deadline.
Evening news co-anchor Chuck Henry, along with longtime reporters Beverly White, Vikki Vargas, Angie Crouch and Kim Baldonado, accepted the voluntary buyouts that were presented to some staff members earlier this year in the hope of avoiding layoffs.
NBCUniversal has been undergoing dramatic cost-cutting, as have other television stations industrywide, due to fears of a possible recession in 2023, an expected advertising downturn and other factors.
Six people in ad sales, public relations and at Knbc’s sister Telemundo station, Kvea-tv Channel 52, learned they were part of layoffs that were unavoidable, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the exits.
Knbc declined comment.

Local public broadcaster Kcet was once again the major winner at this year’s Los Angeles Area Emmys, and then, when combined with its sister station Koce (“PBS SoCal”), the two outlets further dominated the awards. Kcet won eight Emmys this year, the most of any station, followed by Univision’s Kmex-tv, which won five. Telemundo’s Kvea won four, and then there was Koce, with three.
That means the combined Kcet/Koce won eight Emmys overall, easily leading all other stations and duopolies.
Kcet’s wins included L.A. Local Color, for “Transformation (Broken Bread),” as well as entertainment, for “Jazz City (SoCal Connected).” Other big winners included Knbc, for daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Kabc, for evening newscast (7 p.m. to midnight). Kmex and Kvea tied for morning news (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.).

Members of SAG-AFTRA and Los Angeles Congressman Adam Schiff sounded alarms Monday about the proliferation of “deep fake” technologies — realistic digital forgeries including sex scenes.
“We have a medium in which lies and fear travel faster than anything else and this has happened practically overnight,” said Schiff during a two-hour panel discussion at union headquarters in Los Angeles.
“I am deeply concerned that deep-fakes could be used to spread disinformation or interfere in our elections, and we have already seen these technologies used to harass, exploit and invade the privacy of private citizens, particularly women,” said Schiff. “We have another election coming up and it’s more important than ever for the public to distinguish between what is real and what is fake. Our democracy depends on it.”
Union member Alyssa Milano said she’s been attacked with lies due to her politics, resulting in a loss of income.
