The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

The following contains major spoilers for The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
Sharksploitation movies live and die based on the strength of their bite. In order to make us afraid to go in the water, genre filmmakers usually deploy a barrage of visual and practical effects to bring to life the ocean’s most feared predator: the shark. Of the many aquatic horror films to hit the screen, few have featured teeth so big and vicious as The Meg.
Jon Turteltaub’s action-packed shark film brings to life Otodus megalodon, the largest predator the world has ever known. Thought to be extinct, a group of oceanic explorers discover this prehistoric shark species lurking beneath the thermocline, a temperature barrier near the ocean floor. A box office hit, The Meg won over audiences with its splashy energy, dynamic special effects, and a captivating performance from action star Jason Statham. Five years later,...

Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.
Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

As anyone who loves fashion knows, clothes are about more than mere style; they communicate an abundance of stories, and that was certainly true of the Hollywood A-listers who walked the champagne-hued carpet at the 2023 Oscars. From romantic volume or sleek modernity to conveying messages both subtle and overt, the stars arriving at L.A.’s Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood seemed to take a uniquely personal approach to their style this year.
The night’s best fashion ran the gamut from the grandeur of voluminous gowns in silk taffeta, notably a pair of Valentino gowns seen on Stephanie Hsu and Florence Pugh, to sleek looks in pale neutrals, including Ana de Armas in Louis Vuitton and Michelle Williams in Chanel. Elegant black gowns also ruled the night, with Danai Gurira’s Jason Wu design and Jenny Slate’s Thom Browne ensemble among the best. Winning details, meanwhile, ranged from...

American fashion is making an excellent case for its presence on upcoming red carpets, judging by some of the high-profile shows debuting for Fall/Winter 2023 in New York this week. Jason Wu’s elegant presentation in a theater space at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was among the season’s outstanding examples, a sublime blend of tailoring and romance told via Wu’s restrained, confident sensibilities.
“In a day when you see much larger houses dominating the red carpet, I’m really proud of the fact that actresses choose to work with me and wear my designs,” Wu (who most recently dressed Viola Davis for the Golden Globes and Niecy Nash for the Critics Choice Awards) told The Hollywood Reporter following the show. “The red carpet has become such a business, but we believe in genuine relationships and friendships. Look at Niecy; she came to my very first fashion show 15 years ago.

Released in 2019 The Wandering Earth became one of the largest grossing non-English language films in history, mostly on the strength of its performance in its native China. Of course, that made The Wandering Earth II inevitable. The only surprises are that rather than a sequel it’s a prequel, telling the story of the Moving Mountain Project that turned Earth into a giant spaceship and that it manages to be even longer than the original, coming in at just under three hours.

Considering the huge box office success of the initial film, it is no surprise that a sequel would soon arrive, with Frant Gwo continuing the saga based on Liu CIxin’s short story, with a prequel this time.

The story begins in the early days of the Moving Mountain Project, with a coalition of the world’s nations having decided to place huge machines in strategic locations around the Earth in order to move the planet away from the dying Sun, while additional ones in the Moon are to move that planet away from Earth, in order for the latter to avoid the former’s gravitational pull. China’s Lunar New Year box office got off to a solid start Sunday despite ongoing concerns over the Covid wave sweeping the country. An especially strong and diverse slate of local holiday blockbusters is giving the Chinese film industry the boost it so desperately needs after a prolonged period of market damage during last year’s lockdowns.
Frank Guo’s big-budget sci-fi spectacle The Wandering Earth 2, starring Wu Jing and Andy Lau, rocketed to the front of the pack with a 69.7 million opening day, according to data from tracking firm Artisan Gateway. But Chinese filmmaking legend Zhang Yimou’s latest feature, Full River Red, a period comedy thriller, was close behind with a strong 59.3 million start. Refresh for latest…: It’s now official, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has become the sixth movie ever to cross the 2B mark worldwide. It is also the filmmaker’s third to hit the milestone, alongside Titanic and the original Avatar.
The mega-achievement was presaged ahead of the weekend with the global gross on the 20th Century Studios/Disney sequel now 2.024B through Sunday. That includes 1.426B from overseas turnstiles. This means that offshore, Way of Water has become the No. 4 title of all time, jumping past Avengers: Infinity War and behind only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. This gives Cameron bragging rights to three of the top four movies ever at the international box office.
On a worldwide basis, Way of Water remains the No. 6 film ever, with the Na’vi next set on leap-frogging Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When that happens later this week,...

The Korean War has been a fertile ground for epic war features over the past few decades. Predominantly these have emerged from South Korea where the war is part of the national subconscious. Chinese cinema had tended to focus more on the impact of World War 2 and its aftermath until the release of “The Battle at Lake Changjin” in 2021. A huge success at the box office and another in the current trend of “Melody” blockbusters that incorporate patriotic themes in amongst the entertainment. With the endeavor requiring three directors, it comes as no surprise that the sequel was shot back-to-back to make the most of the production costs.

Without a doubt, fashion's greatest accessory is a glamorous beauty look. There's no denying that when New York Fashion Week rolls around that statement couldn't be more true. Between the Alice + Oliva, Christian Siriano and Tommy Hilfiger shows, the spring/summer 2023 collections have ushered in a new era of beauty trends. We're talking huge clear beads adorning braided hairstyles, which created the illusion of bubble crowns, neon-colored wigs that showcased individuality and bright eyeshadows in electrifying shades of red-orange, pink and indigo. Plus, designers like Jason Wu proved...

Florals for spring? Groundbreaking...especially when it's in Jason Wu's hands. The designer and Jason Wu Beauty founder showcased a whimsical spring/summer 2023 collection during New York Fashion Week. On Sept. 10, models traipsed down the runway in vibrant watercolor floral patterns, intricately beaded sheer dresses that mixed edginess with softness and dramatic draping that brought the wow factor. Of course, Wu's fashion fantasy wasn't complete without the extra oomph of the hair and makeup, which were just as romantic as the clothes. Olaplex ambassador Jimmy Paul gave models with longer hair sleek braided twists with the ends sticking out, while...

Few moments in New York fashion have felt more stratospheric than the mid-1990s, when the triumvirate of Calvin, Ralph and Donna dominated both the runways and supermodel-laden ad campaigns, while Geoffrey Beene was crafting gowns so precise and poetic, the designer’s devoted fans would be moved to tears.
On Sept. 10 at New York’s Pier 17, Jason Wu said it felt like the right time to reference that magical period via his Spring 2023 collection. “It was such a high in American fashion, and that doesn’t get celebrated enough,” he told The Hollywood Reporter backstage following his New York Fashion Week presentation. “Also, I’ve been at 35th Street and Seventh Avenue for 10 years now. That’s right in the heart of everything, all my fashion memories are there, and I love it. So instead of looking outward for inspiration, I wanted...

Warner Bros took the stage at CineEurope here in Barcelona this evening, touting its upcoming slate ahead of a screening of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis which begins rolling out this week.
In his remarks, Andrew Cripps, the studio’s President of International Theatrical Distribution, put particular emphasis on collaboration with exhibition being a key element to the business. “We made it through together,” Cripps said, referring to the pandemic, and he noted the rebound in box office with great results from PLFs, telling exhibitors that it was encouraging to see increased investments in upgrading cinemas to enhance the shared experience of moviegoing. “Nothing can replicate it, and nothing can replace it,” he enthused.
Cripps further added that one of the few good things to come out of the past few years has been “the level of cooperation” across the aisles. Working together has been a “win-win” and he encouraged exhibition...

Joe Russo Closes Deal To Script ‘Extraction 2,’ New Installment Of Netflix Smash Chris Hemsworth Pic
Exclusive: As the Chris Hemsworth action film Extraction continues on pace to become Netflix’s most watched feature film ever, the film’s writer, Joe Russo, has closed a deal to write another installment of the high action film. Agbo, the company run by Russo and his brother Anthony, are putting the pieces together and are optimistic that Sam Hargrave returns as director, and that Chris Hemsworth will reprise as mercenary Tyler Rake, though those deals won’t be made by Netflix until the script is ready.
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo told Deadline. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”

The Chinese mountain-climbing adventure “The Climbers” works best when it’s an old-fashioned macho melodrama about the hardships faced by the first mountaineering team to document their summit of Mount Everest’s treacherous North-side in 1975.
In these scenes, writer-director Daniel Lee (“Black Mask”) and his colleagues deliver a less flamboyant but equally nationalistic mountain-climbing answer to “Top Gun,” one that’s mostly focused on the camaraderie and heartbreak that the (predominantly male) National Mountaineering Team faces whenever their stubborn but resourceful leaders Wuzhou Fang and Qu Songlin (Zhang Yi) press on in the face of avalanches, snow drifts, and other killer weather conditions.
Most action set pieces — which are the movie’s biggest selling point, given its IMAX presentation here in America — are marred by cheap-looking computer graphics and image-compositing, especially whenever the mountaineering team is super-imposed on the side of Everest during helicopter or crane shots. But impressive sound design,...
