Spinning audiences back to the mid-1970s, UFA Fiction’s latest period series “Disko 76” is set in a pivotal time in the industrial heartland of West Germany as a new American pop music craze takes over the airwaves and dance floors.
The six-part series, which premiered at the recent Berlinale Series Market, continues its international rollout at Series Mania in Lille before bowing on the Rtl+ streaming platform on March 28 and on Rtl Group channel Nitro on April 1.
UFA Fiction quickly won over Rtl+ with the idea from former UFA Fiction producer Benjamin Benedict of a family story set in the disco era, says fellow producer Sinah Swyter.
Boasting classic hits from the likes of Donna Summer, Abba, Kool and the Gang, Boney M. and many more, the series follows Doro (Luise Aschenbrenner), a rebellious young woman constricted by married life who finds freedom with the arrival of disco...

Chicago – Ken Follett’s “The Pillars of the Earth” is in the great tradition of old-fashioned adventure serials. The line between good and evil is clearly drawn and there is little doubt which side of the line each character belongs. This story is a battle between heart and hierarchy, nobility and debauchery, light and darkness. It’s fraught with clichés, melodramatic in the extreme, and entertaining as hell.
Follett’s best-selling 1989 novel must’ve been daunting material for this German/Canadian co-production to tackle. Taking the form of an eight-part miniseries, the film runs over seven hours without commercials, yet still manages to feel somewhat rushed, particularly in its initial episodes, as dozens of characters and story threads are breathlessly set up. Yet once the series settles on its primary subject: the construction of a cathedral in Kingsbridge, England, during the 12th century, “Pillars” becomes an engrossing portrait of how...

Starz, an American premium cable network, announced that it acquired the U.S. broadcasting rights of the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, a co-production between Canada and Germany.
Obviously, this eight-episode miniseries is adapted from a novel of Ken Follett and was produced with a budget of $40 million. Moreover, The Pillars of the Earth was shot in Hungary and Austria. Obviously, I don't need to tell you that Starz will present this show as an "original series" [coughing].
The Pillars of the Earth is a sweeping epic of good and evil, treachery and intrigue, violence and beauty, a sensuous, spirited story set against a backdrop of war, religious strife and power struggles in 12th Century England. Besides, as events unfold, the cathedral in Kingsbridge was being built.
