It's hard to imagine there are many Trekkies in the world who are immensely fond of Russell Watson's rendition of "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme song to "Star Trek: Enterprise." Imagine if Rod Stewart were straining to produce a particularly stubborn bowel movement, and you can hear the gravelly strains of Mr. Watson's vocals. The insipid lyrics wax elegiac about the progress we've made "getting from there to here," and how the singer's "time is finally near." No one can hold back the song's narrator as he has "faith of the heart." Nothing's gonna bend or break him. The effect of the song is more or less equivalent to a black-bordered inspirational poster hung on a corporate office wall next to a cubicle. You have strength of the soul.
One might be able to see why the makers of "Star Trek: Enterprise" wanted a pop song,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
In the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "No Small Parts", the characters make a cute reference that served as a wink to the Trekkies watching.
"Lower Decks" is, of course, replete with references, and often goes well out of its way to incorporate ultra-obscure "Star Trek" nods that only deep-cut nerds would spot. It helps that the characters on "Lower Decks" are intimately familiar with Starfleet history, and are armed with the same kind of Trek-nerd knowledge possessed by the audience. As such, when the ensigns on the U.S.S. Cerritos look back to the "Star Trek" events from 120 years prior -- Kirk's time -- they refer to it as "the Tos era." What does "Tos" stand for? "Those old scientists," one of them explains.

The ships in "Star Trek" don't merely go. They go boldly.
"Star Trek" has long been suffused with an old world spirit of frontiersmanship. The various Trek shows are, overall, about delving deep into the cosmos, straying further and further from Earth, all in an unending quest to expose ourselves to new cultures and new philosophies. "Star Trek," at its best, implies that humanity is constantly engaged in an ongoing peaceful exchange of ideas. Thanks to the Prime Directive -- the Starfleet rule that dictates a strict policy of noninterference in the natural evolution of a planet -- said frontiersmanship is actively separated from any notions of colonialism. "Star Trek" is bold for the sake of boldness, exploring the galaxy not for reasons of conquest, but humility. The ideal Trek philosophy is to constantly prove, time and again, how small we really are ... and be exhilarated by it.

As I mentioned in last week’s column (Oh Boy), Scott Bakula also starred as Captain Jonathan Archer on Enterprise, which ran on the Upn network from September 2001 to May 2005, a total of four years. That’s one more year than Tos’s run, but three years shorter than its successful progenitors, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
Upn claimed that poor ratings caused Enterprise’s downfall; according to Wikipedia, it never rose above the Top 100 rank in the Neilson ratings system, debuting at #115, and continuing to sink until its final season, where it landed at #148. It’s generally perceived as a failure, and has been blamed for the lack of any Star Trek on either television or movie screens until J.J. Abrams’s 2009 film reboot of the franchise.

Hate the new "Enterprise" theme? Well, Brannon Braga has heard it all, and it doesn't appear it will make any difference."We can't please everybody," Braga recently told Kevin Williamson of the Calgary Sun about the Diane Warren theme song, "Faith of the Heart" performed by Russell Watson. "There are some people who love the song, and there are people who think it's cheesy. They came with a petition with 1,000 signatures. But plenty of people find the song very uplifting."And if Braga's comments doesn't help some fans accept the theme, he did offer a bit of advice: "Turn the volume down."Braga told the newspaper that outside of the theme music, he is quite aware of the weight being placed on his shoulders with the new Upn series, and that he and co-creator Rick Berman could be responsible ...

Has it been confirmed? The British news site Ananova seems to think so. Russell Watson, a British tenor opera singer, will become the first singer to ever perform a theme song for Star Trek (well, outside the female voice used in some of the original series' themes). According to Ananova, Watson recorded a track for the opening credits of "Enterprise," using the song "Faith In My Heart," which will be included on Watson's new album "Encore" when it is released Oct. 29. Watson recently topped the the U.K. classical album charts and recorded the song with a 45-piece orchestra, and will be used in all 26 episodes of the series' first season. The use of the title here is a slight variation to the one previously reported on Airlock Alpha that is rumored to be the same performed by ...

After having a look at the fundamentals of chord voicings in Part 1, we’ll have a look at other important factors for good chord voicings.
Another basic element of effective chord voicings are so called “Low Interval Limits” (Lil). The lower you get on the piano, for example, the more tricky it is to find chords that don’t sound muddy. Many people trust their ear on these things, which is basically a good idea. However sometimes you might be mislead by the sound texture, for example of your piano that you compose on, to believe something does sound fine when it actually translates into muddyness on real instruments. For every two notes that sound together in a certain interval, there is a limit how low you can go with them without them sounding muddy. Basically you can dissect every voicing with these limits into every internal interval.

There are nearly endless possibilities of how to make the same chord sound, and while some of them sound quite disastrous others have a stellar resonance and are reason for scrolling back in an audio file to listen once again. There seem to be endless parameters that define a chord sound, and often people end up in working their way to their desired sound by trial and error.
This tutorial series tries to shed some light on the reasons that make a difference in a chord voicing and why.
But first of all: what is the difference between a chord and a voicing? While the term chord only defines which notes sound together, a voicing specifies exactly How they sound together. A voicing is the specific structure of how the notes of the chord are spread out over the register.
To understand how voicings work it is necessary to have a basic knowledge of acoustics.

No one would have believed in the last months of 2011 that one of the most inspired and successful concept albums of all time, itself based on one of the most popular and beloved science fiction stories of all time, was about to be given an upgrade of planet sized proportions; but that's exactly what transpired when composer Jeff Wayne called a press conference on 18th November to announce the coming of The War Of The Worlds: The New Generation.
Thirty-three years after the original double album was released, a critical and commercial success that featured an eclectic cast including Moody Blues front man Justin Hayward, chirpy Cockney David Essex, Thin Lizzy rocker Phil Lynott and legendary movie star Richard Burton, Wayne surprised fans by revealing that he would be releasing a reinterpretation of his masterpiece in June 2012, to be followed several months later by an international concert tour in the winter (subject,...

Kylie Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Take That took to the stage at the U.K.'s Royal Variety Performance on Thursday night, December 9 to entertain Prince Charles, shortly after his car was attacked by protesters. The heir-to-the-British throne and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were being chauffeured to the Palladium Theatre in London to attend the annual event when unruly student demonstrators ambushed their vehicle during a violent protest against a rise in university tuition fees.
The couple was unharmed in the incident, which saw their car pelted with eggs and paint and kicked by protesters, but they were left visibly shocked by the onslaught. The royals refused to let the attack keep them from the show and they carried out their duties by greeting the night's performers, including Minogue and recently reformed five-piece Take That, who sang two songs at the event.

British opera star Russell Watson was in such agony during his battle with brain cancer, he considered leaping to his death from a hotel balcony. The tenor was diagnosed with a pituitary gland growth in 2005, and was devastated when the tumor returned two years later.
He won his fight against the disease in 2007 following surgery, but Watson admits his ordeal brought him close to giving up on life. The singer tells Britain's The Sun, "I am quite religious and I remember really praying and demanding, 'Why me? Why twice?' "
"I thought I was going to lose everything, I thought my career was over. I just couldn't believe it had happened for the second time. It seemed so unfair. There was one time when I felt like ending it all. I was standing on a balcony of a hotel in L.A. and I just thought, 'F**k this, I've f**king had enough.

Singing accountant Christopher Stone will perform on tonight’s Britain’s Got Talent semi final and in the interview below, the 29 year old talks about his ever present love of music, the largest audience he has ever sang for and his ultimate dream.
When and how did you discover you had your talent?
I’ve always done music, since I was 5 and played the recorder. It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I discovered I could sing. I was asked to join someone in a competition singing a classical duet. It was an adult competition and we came 2nd, which I thought was pretty good. So, I gave the singing a try, and when I auditioned for Chetham’s School of Music I was asked to do singing as my 1st study instrument instead of my second, and it just took off from there! He said:
“I am not looking for love, I am a big believer in fate and that love will find you.”
“I think I would suit someone who is not highly strung but very chilled, I do enough worrying for two people. I don’t really go for looks but someone like Kelly Brook would be nice.
“I won’t be taking up any of the offers until after Bgt has finished but by then they probably won’t be interested.”

British opera singer Russell Watson is set to embark on a Uk tour to celebrate his full recovery from brain surgery last year.
The 41-year-old tenor will play at 13 venues across the country this summer, just months after undergoing emergency surgery in October after doctors discovered he had fallen victim to a second brain tumour.
Watson - known as The Voice due to his powerful vocals - suffered his first brain tumour in 2006, when doctors operated on the classical music sensation through his nose.
Due to the technique used in his first surgery, doctors were forced to operate on the star through his mouth this time around - sparking fears he would never be able to record or perform again.
However, Watson's vocal chords were left unscathed by the punishing medical treatment and the star is looking forward to a full workload in 2008, hinting he may even release a new album.
Watson writes on his official blog, "There are all kinds of other plans afoot that I don't think I can reveal yet. Album (cough)."
The Uk tour will kick off in Glasgow, Scotland on 9 June, before moving to London, Birmingham and Bristol as well as a homecoming gig in his native Manchester, England on 19 June.
