Mélanie Laurent’s follow-up to last year’s Wingwomen sees the actress-turned-filmmaker going for the Bonnie and Clyde-style caper in Freedom, a true-crime drama inspired by Bruno Sulak. Dubbed “the gentleman robber”, he earned that nickname since he doesn’t resort to violence and killing his victims upon committing a robbery. Played by the charming Lucas Bravo, best known for his role as Gabriel in TV’s Emily in Paris, his character is first seen robbing a grocery store with the help of his friend and accomplice Drago (Steve Tientchier). His girlfriend Annie (Léa Luce Busato) is responsible for driving as she sits and waits in the getaway car.
Here, Laurent opens her movie with a sensual close-up shot of Annie as the camera rotates while focusing on her pouty red lips and beautiful face, showcasing the director’s firm grasp on magnetic visuals. There’s a buoyant energy during the opening robbery scene,...

“Freedom” is a French romantic thriller movie starring Lucas Bravo and Léa Luce Busato. It is directed by Mélanie Laurent.
The versatile Mélanie Laurent both writes and directs this enchanting film about charming and seductive thieves. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s, it draws inspiration from the life of the renowned thief Bruno Sulak, although, as noted at the beginning of the movie, it is a loose adaptation of the real events and the gang it portrays.
“Freedom” is more than just a thriller; it is, at its heart, a love story, a romantic film filled with impossible loves and poignant tragedies. The central character is a captivating, poetic, and passionate figure who, in addition, harbors ideals. This adaptation of the life of this thief, his gang, and his partner makes its way to Prime Video.

Rather than taking the obvious route with an action-heavy, fictionalized portrait of French thief Bruno Sulak’s criminal misadventures of the late 1970s and early ’80s, filmmaker Mélanie Laurent shrewdly treats “Freedom” as an introspective, tragic romance centered on one man’s purpose and passion. Her creative instincts prove correct, though flawed and not exactly all that unique given the existence of “Heat,” “Thief” and a litany of other titles that traverse similar thematic territory. While she and co-writer Christophe Deslandes hit tonal notes at an efficient pace and introduce fascinating angles connecting the three leads, their spin on true-life events, exploring the psyches behind all involved, barely scratches the surface, leaving its impact severely blunted.
When we first meet rebellious mastermind Bruno, he’s knocking over small-town supermarkets for sport with his getaway-driver girlfriend Annie (Léa Luce Busato) and burly bagman buddy Drago (Steve Tientcheu). They’ve been raking...

Mélanie Laurent’s “Freedom” proved to be a liberating production for both the writer/director and her lead star, Lucas Bravo.
“Emily in Paris” breakout star Bravo makes his leading man debut in the Prime Video true crime film inspired by Bruno Sulak. Bravo portrays the infamous thief and con artist who masterminded jewelry-store heists without real guns in 1970s and early-’80s France. Newcomer Léa Luce Busato has her first screen role as Sulak’s getaway driver and girlfriend, Annie.
While Laurent describes “Freedom” as a French take on “Catch Me If You Can,” the filmmaker also told IndieWire the feature is truly more of a love story that is “almost like a rom-com” meets “Bonnie and Clyde.” Yet it took Laurent a decade after Philippe Jaenada’s biography “Sulak,” released in August 2014, to bring her vision to the screen.
“It had all those crazy elements for a movie.

This frothy film tells the true-crime story of the so-called polite bandit Bruno Sulak, who goes on a crime spree in 1980s France, but insists his gang never fire their guns
Fast-rising French star Lucas Bravo, best known so far for playing love interest chef Gabriel in the series Emily in Paris, plays polite armed robber Bruno Sulak in this frothy true-crime story. Set largely in a version of the 1980s where everyone avoids wearing the most heinous trends of the time (and instead rock all the chic 80s styles designers have been reviving recently such as huge feather earrings and animal print) the story apparently sticks reasonably close to the historical record as it tracks Sulak’s career.
The handsome bandit specialises at first in robbing les supermarchés in the sticks. His gang includes stalwart wingman Drago (busy character actor Steve Tientcheu) and Bruno’s girlfriend/getaway driver Annie.
