James Winburn, the stuntman who performed scenes as Michael Myers in the 1978 movie Halloween, has died aged 85.
Winburn’s manager confirmed he died in hospital in LA on 19 November following an undisclosed illness.
One of the most notable scenes the stuntman performed in the movie saw Donald Pleasence’s Dr Samuel Loomis shoot Myers six times, causing him to fall off a balcony to his (seeming) death.
Winburn stepped in to film sequences in place of Nick Castle and Tony Moran, who both played Myers in the film.
He later returned as the iconic masked villain, also known as The Shape, alongside Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis in 1981’s Halloween II.
Winburn had attended the For the Love of Horror convention the month before he died. “We are extremely sad to learn of the passing of James Winburn,” UK-based Monopoly Events wrote on Twitter after news of Winburn’s death went public.

Over the past few years, independent board game publisher Vigour Games has carved out a niche in the social deduction space. With games like "Growl" and "Chaosmos," Vigour focuses on games where judging your opponents and remembering their actions is the key to victory. This Halloween marks the addition of a new bluffing game to the Vigour Games family: "Incident: 3: The Dead," the third set in the "Monsters and the Things that Destroy Them" series.
Created by Joey Vigour -- whose "Growl" mechanics will soon be featured in Asmodee's "Stranger Things: Attack of the Mind Flayer" -- "Monsters and the Things that Destroy Them" was successfully funded on Kickstarter earlier this year. "Monsters: The Dead," which hits Kickstarter today, builds on the success of that project by creating a new self-contained collection of cards under a new theme: beloved '80s slashers like "Hellraiser," "Aliens," and "Nightmare on Elm Street.

Even the greatest movies can take a while to successfully connect with their intended audience.
A lot of films that we now consider to be above reproach were initially written off by contemporary viewers. Some were purposefully made to challenge, alienate, and provoke (like your Blade Runners or your Fight Clubs), but just as many straightforward genre flicks have fallen victim to hasty judgement.
Horror gets a particularly raw deal, given that the genre is undervalued and easily dismissed at the best of times. As such, its more out-there specimens don’t always get the fair shake they deserve.
Notable casualties of this short-sightedness include Peeping Tom, The Thing and The Shining: all of which have gone on to become feted classics. Yet it was only with a little distance — and by stewing on them for several years — that people came to recognise their genius.

This month marks the publication of Titan’s final Michael Myers movie tie-in, Halloween Ends. Authored by the series’ co-screenwriter, Paul Brad Logan, Halloween Ends sets itself apart from the film version by giving fans entirely new side-stories involving The Shape, Laurie Strode and their doomed Haddonfield neighbors.
Expanding the Blumhouse trilogy’s lore, throwing in some awesome bonus kills and packing in more Easter eggs than a rabbit in red, here are ten ways the Halloween Ends tie-in novel expands upon the strengths of its cinematic forebear.
Spoiler alert– if you haven’t seen the movie or want to read the book first, mosey on over to Peacock or Amazon to avail yourself of Michael and Corey’s last ride.

Halloween Ends has come and gone, taking with it the hopes and dreams of multiple generations of The Shape’s fans.
You can like it, hate it, but you better learn to love the fact we are living in a legitimate Michael Myers moment. What better way to soak it all in than with a new tie-in novelization from Titan Books?
Released Tuesday (10/18), Halloween Ends: The Official Novelization has been described by its author, Paul Brad Logan, as ‘very much its own thing.’ It branches off from the movie in parts, adds a lot of ancillary characters and has creative callbacks to everything from the cult of the Thorn to the family Tramer.
Yet there is so much more to this book. The Halloween Ends novelization is a case study in when an adaptation ‘doing its own thing’ happens to transcend its source material. It’s the rare occurrence when...

Teen horror typically explores issues only teens can relate to. Whether that's high school bullies, sex, or drugs, teen-centric films specialize in coming-of-age in the modern world. Along with these themes, filmmakers slather on all the genre conventions, tropes, and murderous thrills we've come to expect. From sci-fi and black comedies to witches and straight-up slashers, teen horror runs the gamut and is often unhindered by genre boundaries. What it means to pass through puberty and how relationships evolve in the process frequently lie at the heart of a teen horror movie, and monsters are usually manifestations of personal traumas and transformation.
This list stretches from several '70s and '80s horror classics to contemporary fare, capturing the progression of teen stories. A smorgasbord of subgenres is celebrated as well, including supernatural horror, slashers, werewolf movies, and a whodunnit. It's a well known fact that the original "Halloween," refers to Michael Myers as "The Shape" in the movie's end credits. It's a fitting description for the character who never utters a single word throughout the entire film. Instead, he lurks in the shadows, kitchen knife in hand, waiting for the right moment to strike. He is less a man and more, quite simply, the embodiment — the shape — of evil itself.
Over the years, many actors (the number varies depending on how technical you want to get here) have donned Michael's iconic mechanic's jumpsuit and repurposed William Shatner mask, making the moniker of "The Shape" a fitting name. But even though Michael's portrayers truly have shape-shifted a lot over time, there is one man whose name is synonymous with the infamous slasher villain: Nick Castle.

To begin with something benign: David Gordon Green's "Halloween Ends," now in theaters and streaming on Peacock, employed an unusual font for its opening titles. As has been discussed in the pages of /Film recently, both John Carpenter's 1978 original and Green's 2018 sequel employed an orange Itc Serif Gothic Heavy font. Both Rick Rosenthal's 1981 sequel "Halloween II," and Green's follow-up "Halloween Kills" uses the same orange on a Standard Ct Ext ExtraBold font. Finally, both Tommy Lee Wallace's 1982 film "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" and Green's "Halloween Ends" feature a more simplified font that looks like Helvetica.
Why is this important? Green clearly had an eye on the entire rocky history of the "Halloween" film series, now on its thirteenth entry. While Green's films follow a particular continuity that ignores all the other films in the franchise with the exception of the first, in very subtle ways,...

Billed as the final film in David Gordon Green‘s sequel trilogy, Halloween Ends surely won’t be the last movie in the franchise but it’s likely to be the final time Jamie Lee Curtis returns to do battle with Michael Myers. Not surprisingly, it’s a promise that put asses in the seats over the weekend, with Halloween Ends scaring up 58.4 million worldwide thus far.
Domestically, Halloween Ends made 41.2 million in its opening weekend across 3,901 theaters. That puts Halloween Ends in the #1 spot on the domestic charts this week, and the film is likely to rocket past 100 million worldwide in these next two weeks before Halloween.
For the sake of comparison, Halloween had a domestic opening of 76 million back in 2018, while Halloween Kills opened to 49 million here in the United States just last year.

This article contains HAlloween Ends spoilers.
There are plenty of iconic slasher movie franchises that have become emblematic with the Halloween season. When it comes to holiday horrors, however, it’s hard to beat John Carpenter’s prototypical slasher classic, Halloween, which first introduced unsuspecting audiences to the blunt, brutal evil of Michael Myers. Michael, also known as “The Shape,” has terrified horror fans for more than 40 years, and the boogeyman has endured so long because there’s a scary simplicity to the cipher. Michael Myers is an evil force of nature and there’s something deeply unsettling about his unstoppable presence.
The Halloween franchise has experienced an inconsistent run across its first 10 films until David Gordon Green and Blumhouse were able to breathe fresh life into Michael’s stiff corpse. And their legacy sequel approach has brought Halloween back to its roots. The series’ current timeline builds upon the events of the original 1978 masterpiece.

The Boogieman and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) are back to face off one final time in director David Gordon Green’s last installment in the horror film franchise, Halloween Ends.
Halloween Ends begins in Haddonfield in 2019 with a teenager named Corey (Rohan Campbell) showing up on Halloween night to babysit a young boy. The kid suffers from horrible nightmares about Michael Myers’ killing spree the previous year and the serial killer’s subsequent disappearance. Once the parents are gone, however, the boy (Jaxon Goldberg) becomes an absolute brat toward Corey and plays a mean prank on him that goes horribly wrong.

The Spooky Season is not only upon us, it is well into its Halloween rampage. If you have not yet begun a horror movie marathon, picked pumpkins, bobbed for apples, or embarked on a ghost tour, we’re starting to really question your odds of surviving the season as a creepy camper.
But you’re in luck, because today marks National Haunted House Day, occurring on the second Friday of October (and a day that sadly never quite gained prominence). So it seemed like a good time to recommend one of my favorite seasonal events: Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort.
Sure, Hhn is also taking place at Universal Hollywood, but I’m a hometown Orlando kid, so I’m somewhat partial to the Sunshine State scares. In fact, I love Hhn Orlando so much, and have attended dozens of times since I was a kid, that I was excited to interview Lora Sauls,...

How do you explain what is at the center of a black hole? By definition, the color black is the absence of light. Trying to comprehend that on a cosmic scale, where a vast inky emptiness is so overwhelming that literal light cannot escape its gravitational pull, remains difficult to fathom, be ye astronomers or storytellers.
Take this weekend’s Halloween Ends for example. For two movies now, director David Gordon Green and his team of co-writers, which includes Danny McBride, have attempted to graph a rationalization for the absolute absence of light onto John Carpenter’s Boogeyman made flesh. Which is to say, they’ve attempted to explain Michael Myers. Literally credited as “the Shape” in the original Halloween masterpiece of 1978, Michael was always intended to be the absence of light, of color, and of anything else that could be construed as a scrap of humanity. He was evil personified.

Michael Myers (aka The Shape) in Halloween Ends, co-written, produced and directed by David Gordon Green.
Wow, that time of year snuck up on us once more, much like the creeper of this looooong-time horror franchise. Yes, Fall is fully here and that big holiday is mere weeks away. And this is the (unlucky) thirteenth entry in the series that began 44 years ago (feels like we just marked its big 4-0). As though we’ve not been bombarded with horror flicks the last few weeks, from The Invitation to current box office champ Smile. Ah, but this is different since it’s being treated as a major release from a big-time studio, and it stars the original’s “break-out” actress, who has had a career way beyond that early label of “scream queen”, though many genre stars proceeded her. But this was a true “game-changer” back in 1978. But will its...

Director David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills ended with Michael Myers finally coming home after an enraged mob encounter, slaying Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) daughter in the process. It left the door wide open, ensuring one final showdown between two enduring horror icons in the sequel. But Green’s trilogy steadfastly refuses to give in to expectations. Halloween Ends does live up to its title, but that confrontation gets tacked on to a bizarre new story set four years after Kills.
Since 2018, Michael Myers has disappeared, and his house has been bulldozed to the ground. Laurie finally attempts to move on and find peace. She bought a new home in Haddonfield, where she lives trap free with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). Ends isn’t Laurie’s story, though. Not really. Laurie may be the town’s freak show, but...

The principal question of David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capper “Halloween Ends” is baked right into its seemingly definitive title: It ends? After 13 films, including multiple timelines, confusing continuity, a pair of remakes, one wholly unaffiliated outlier sequel, a run of “re-quels,” and more, the ballad of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode is coming to a close with one last bloody, brutal slasher. And yet the driving force behind Green’s three “Halloween” features has always been at odds with the very idea that any of this could ever end. So, does it? Well, you’ll have to see.
If Green’s “Halloween” was about the corrosive effects of sustained terror on a single family, and his “Halloween Kills” was about how mob justice can’t solve anything, his “Halloween Ends” thrillingly connects those ideas, putting all of beleaguered Haddonfield, Illinois, on display. After decades of horror, of course this once-idyllic...

As far as well-loved horror franchises go, "Halloween" has one of the most complex legacies a fright-loving fan can find. John Carpenter's 1978 "Halloween" still stuns, Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode is one of horror's greatest protagonists, and Michael Myers remains one of the most mysterious and terrifying horror boogeymen ever invented. On the other hand, the franchise is both blessed and cursed by the myriad resets and timelines that various filmmakers have concocted over the years. Do you want the elegant route of "Halloween," "Halloween II," then "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later," and possibly (I'm so sorry) "Halloween: Resurrection"? Do you want to lean into cults and the supernatural, and experience the Cult of Thorn outings with films 4-6? There's also the option of the Zombie remakes, or even watching the original and jumping to "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" in what I call the "Ode to Masks" timeline.

Michael Myers and Laurie Strode are getting ready to have their final fight in Halloween Ends, which is coming to theaters and also streaming on Peacock on October 14, 2022.
In a new interview that just made its way onto our desk this morning, Jamie Lee Curtis teases Laurie Strode’s mental state in Halloween Ends, set four years after Halloween Kills. In addition to noting that Laurie has moved on from worrying about Michael Myers, a stark contrast from the previous two films in this trilogy, she also seems to tease another threat entirely.
“It’s a movie about a final reckoning… between Laurie and Michael,” she says of Halloween Ends. “There is a battle between them, and the irony is that the 2018 and 2021 movies were about a woman who was prepared for Michael. Every day of her life, since she was 17 years old. This is a movie where she’s actually moved on.

Halloween Ends is coming to theaters And Peacock on October 14, the film taking place four years after the events of Halloween Kills and promising the Final fight between Michael and Laurie. What were they up to in those four lost years, you might be wondering?
Director David Gordon Green explains to Total Film that Laurie Strode has finally found herself in a better place. As for Michael, well, it sounds like we’ll never really know where he’s been.
“We don’t really explain that,” David Gordon Green tells the magazine. “It’s like: I don’t want to see where Jaws goes to sleep at night when I’m watching a shark movie. I want to see him when he pops up, and he’s got an appetite!”
Jamie Lee Curtis tells Total Film, on the other hand, “By the time you meet Laurie Strode, she has gotten help.
