When considering the greatest innovations in visual effects on film, there are few franchises that have done more for the medium than the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" trilogy (soon to be quadrilogy with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes"). While plenty of modern blockbusters use visual effects to create expansive worlds and larger-than-life creatures, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was the first to ground them in a human-animal hybrid protagonist and their emotional journey. There is simply no greater digitally-realized character than Caesar, (Andy Serkis) cinema's first-ever photorealistic leading ape and one of modern filmmaking's most complex and challenging characters.
Caesar's rise from the son of a science experiment to an exalted leader is as heartfelt as it is harrowing, a story of balanced leadership and immense sacrifice amidst turmoil and violence. The fact that all of this is built using digital, humanoid apes -- not...

"The Incredible Hulk" was an early stumbling block for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Released in June 2008, a mere month after "Iron Man," lightning did not strike twice for Marvel Studios' burgeoning movie enterprise; "Incredible Hulk" got a shrug from critics and underperformed at the box office.
Even so, Marvel Studios steamrolled ahead. Star Edward Norton didn't return for any future MCU films and Bruce Banner was recast with Mark Ruffalo for "The Avengers." The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Dave Gonzales, Gavin Edwards, and Joanna Robinson features a chapter about "The Incredible Hulk" and its gamma radiation-flavored fallout. The book ultimately puts the production's unpleasant memories on the shoulders of Edward Norton, suggesting his actor-as-auteur approach solidified Marvel's top-down filmmaking tactics.
An unnamed "Marvel performer" tells the authors, "We have a no-a**hole policy on our movies," and the book traces this policy back to Norton's behavior.

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
You might call Carla Gugino Mike Flanagan's secret weapon. The actor has worked with Flanagan on multiple occasions, from "The Haunting of Hill House" to "Gerald's Game," and beyond. Their latest collaboration is "The Fall of the House of Usher," an Edgar Allan Poe-infused series now streaming on Netflix. In the series, Gugino plays Verna, a mysterious, supernatural woman who has a habit of popping up seemingly everywhere in various forms. And believe it or not, one of those forms is that of a chimpanzee. Sort of.
In the series, the wealthy, corrupt Usher family, which made a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry, finds themselves being picked off one by one in increasingly gruesome ways (inspired by Edgar Allan Poe stories). Back in April of 2020 — before the video game he co-created, The Last of Us, was a smash HBO series and was simply a cultural phenomenon on its own — Neil Druckmann set a long fan-debated topic to rest. After a Jeopardy clue about the game referred to its Infected (people afflicted with the fictional, widespread cordyceps brain infection) as “zombies,” Druckmann tweeted, “I mean…they’re not zombies” (before adding that the game show reference was still cool). Fast forward a couple of years, and the Infected are more vividly imagined than ever on The Last of Us, an Emmy frontrunner as balloting begins. And if it’s especially clear now that they are, indeed, not zombies — and instead clearly humans trapped by an invasive, deadly fungus — one man deserves particular credit. Over the course of season one, movement choreographer Terry Notary coached a group of 50 stunt performers, helping them transform...

Ruben Östlund and Erik Hemmendorff’s company Plattform Produktion has issued an apology to Berlin-based Argentinian artist Lola Arias over the use of her name in the 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or Winner The Square.
“We understand that the use of Lola Arias’ name, which was not discussed as clearly as it should have been, created a misunderstanding connecting her work as an artist to the artwork The Square (Rutan) shown in the film,” the company said in a statement.
“After meeting the artist in Berlin and discussing the misperception caused, we would like to emphasize that The Square (Rutan) is an artwork originally created by Ruben Östlund and Kalle Boman for the city of Värnamo, Sweden in 2015. All reference to the artist Lola Arias as the creator of the artwork is fictional,” it continued.

There were two things that director Elizabeth Banks insisted on when it came to animating Cokie, the CG star of the black comedy, “Cocaine Bear.” First, she can’t be an inherent killing machine, despite her coke-fueled rampage for more blow and blood. Two, she had to look photoreal — or the movie falls apart.
But that wasn’t a problem for the wizards of Wētā FX, who know their way around creature animation, and are on the verge of winning the VFX Oscar for “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
“The initial brief from Liz on that first call was that the subtlety had to come through,” Wētā’s VFX supervisor Robin Hollander told IndieWire. “Here’s a story of a mother protecting her cubs, and she’s just fallen victim to the war on drugs, if you will. She’s not inherently bad. But there’s no point in doing...

A bear on cocaine? Terrifying. Only slightly less so? A buff New Zealander covered head-to-toe in black lycra, running around on all fours thanks to custom-made, meter-long aluminum limb extensions to portray a bear on cocaine. But that’s what actor Allan Henry had to do in “Cocaine Bear” to give his fellow performers — playing the humans caught in the crossfire when a bear snorts a bunch of abandoned cocaine — something tangible to react to.
Henry has augmented his work as a stunt performer and actor by embodying creature roles for a decade. “I started working with the movement coach for [the ‘Hobbit’ films] Terry Notary, who’s incredible, and the second unit for ‘The Hobbit’ was also being directed by Andy Serkis. "He was a was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater." Universal has unveiled a new "For Your Consideration" awards trailer for Jordan Peele's sci-fi thriller Nope, which first opened in theaters in June during the summer. The residents of a lonely gulch in California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. The story follows a brother and sister that own a horse ranch as they try to figure out what this creature is and how to capture it on camera. Nope's cast features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary. With the awards season in full swing in Hollywood, Universal wants to remind people that this movie and its director Jordan Peele both deserve plenty of attention, too. Even though it first opened months ago. Nope has been showing up on a lot of Top 10 lists from critics this year,...

This post contains spoilers for "The Fabelmans" and "Nope."
A family is dealing with a raucous member of the household, trying to settle things down so they can have a relatively normal dinner. It doesn't help matters that the well-meaning father enters the house and is baffled, slightly dumbstruck at what's causing all the ruckus: a chittering monkey who's just as likely to cause a violent melee as to playfully nip at him or his family members. The wild scene occurs in the middle of a new Universal Pictures release that is at least in part about the power of spectacle, and the awe it can create among audiences (if not automatically the dangerous power that spectacle can hold). That new film is, of course, Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans," though it calls to mind another truly memorable picture from 2022: Jordan Peele's "Nope".

Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated third feature film, “Nope,” has finally arrived.
The film follows Peele’s first two horror films as a writer/director, 2017’s “Get Out” and 2019’s “Us.” Known for his comedy and leading role in “Key and Peele,” Peele has quickly become a draw for fans as a filmmaker and “Nope,” unlike Peele’s first two films, leans heavily into the sci-fi genre with a blockbuster-sized budget. Peele reteamed with Daniel Kaluuya on the film, which finds a brother and sister duo trying to catch UFOs on camera.
With “Nope” being one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, many are no doubt wondering where and how to watch it. All your questions answered below.

"It's a bigger adventure than I've ever tried to tell." Nope's cast features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary. The final trailer for Nope was also released a few weeks ago, but I know many are trying to steer clear of any spoilers or details about this before going in to watch. Ruben Östlund might like his fish in a barrel but he’s a ruthless shot. Following a Palme d’Or win for The Square, the Swedish filmmaker returns to Cannes in competition, and if the contemporary art scene had taken the brunt of that sometimes brilliant, sometimes baggy film (the rare example of an art satire that actually worked), his latest has both the fashion world and the 1 solidly in its sights. With a title derived from an industry term for the worry lines on a person’s forehead, Triangle of Sadness is a film as vast as the sea itself, Östlund’s first real epic. It is his White Lotus, his “wafer-thin mint,” and his Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie rolled into one: a scatological rinsing of wealth and hubris from a filmmaker who, with each passing effort, only further cements himself as contemporary cinema’s auteur of such things.

No wide-release movie this summer has the hype of Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” We basically know what we’re going to get out of the next “Jurassic World,” “Top Gun,” and “Minions,” but as with “Get Out” and “Us,” Peele’s film is an original property that’s guaranteed to get creepy and weird – at least judging by the movie’s mysterious first trailer.
On day three of CinemaCon, the Las Vegas-based trade show for exhibitors and movie insiders, Peele took to the stage to offer a little more info than what was seen in the initial marketing video.
The full trailer, which is not yet available to the general public, is still intentionally vague: “Trailers will give you a taste, but we want to retain some of the mystery, so you can be satisfied going to the damn movie,” he said before letting it rip. He asked the audience...

Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for Jordan Peele's new film titled simply Nope, which seems to be a sci-fi thriller involving an extraterrestrial appearance in a small town. There's no plot info available but this trailer finally confirms the rumors. It opens with an intro about the Haywood ranch - the first & only Black-owned horse trainers in Hollywood. But then it gets a bit crazy with the arrival of a UFO, everyone starts staring up into the sky, and very strange occurrences around town. Nope's cast includes Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary (he must be playing the alien creature). The film features transformative performances from both George MacKay and Lily-Rose Depp, whose characters are contending with species dysphoria and a society unwilling to just let them be themselves.
During the recent press day for the film, Daily Dead spoke with both Depp and MacKay about their characters and what initially drew them to the project. The duo also chatted about collaborating with Biancheri on Wolf and digging into their characters, as well as collaborating with movement coach Terry Notary and their willingness to completely give themselves over to their demanding roles.
Check out our video interview with George MacKay and Lily-Rose Depp below, and look for Wolf in theaters starting tomorrow, Friday, December 3rd.

"Life is no fairy tale... Is it?" Focus Features has released an official trailer for the film titled Wolf, which recently premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival at the end of the fest. This is the "high concept" drama starring the very talented actor George MacKay as a boy who believes he is a wolf. When he is sent to a clinic, Jacob and his animal-bound peers are "forced to undergo increasingly extreme forms of 'curative' therapies." However, once he meets the mysterious Wildcat, everything changes. Lily-Rose Depp stars as "Wildcat", with a cast including Paddy Considine, Martin McCann, Terry Notary, Fionn O'Shea, Eileen Walsh, Lola Petticrew, and Senan Jennings. When this premiered at TIFF, they didn't allow it to be screened for press, for better or worse. I'm definitely curious! MacKay is a tremendously talented actor and maybe he's doing something incredible taking on this tricky role. I just...

Photo: Indiana Jones/Lucasfilm The Indiana Jones films are notable for being extremely exciting and for maximising the star power of its eternally charming, sarcasm-prone star, Harrison Ford. The franchise boasts the oomph you would expect of a team that combines the talents of Star Wars creator George Lucas, Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, and uber-composer John Williams. At their best, the Indiana Jones films maintain a B-movie feel despite their huge reach. The franchise isn’t perfect though - its depiction of all things non-American is highly problematic, and it suffers from, well, the existence of its fourth entry. Speaking of… Related article: Video: ‘The Call of The Wild’ Full Commentary & Reactions From Stars with Harrison Ford, Chris Sanders, Terry Notary & Team Related article: Iconic Roles: Excellent Actors Who Were Second Choice for These Famous Roles – Wolverine, Han Solo & More #4 Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (2008) Crystal...

Starring Harrison Ford (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Terry Notary (Kong: Skull Island), Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Omar Sy (Jurassic World), The Call Of The Wild vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of Alaska during the Gold Rush of the 1890s.

Despite its CGI canine star, this new adaptation of The Call of the Wild finds true humanity in Jack London’s classic story.

Dog-centric movies command a specific audience like period pieces and war films; it can be difficult for a viewer who is not a fan of the genre to crossover for a specific movie except in outstanding cases. Chris Sanders’ The Call of the Wild is not the be-all, end-all of its genre, nor does it feature an even real on screen dog for much of its running time. But after the last few years of cheesy fare like A Dog’s Purpose, A Dog’s Journey, and A Dog’s Way Home, this new adaptation is head of the pack thanks to its CGI St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix with slightly unsettlingly human eyes. It also doesn’t hurt he’s supported by a craggily yet endearing...

The new adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 adventure The Call Of The Wild is a thrilling family-friendly adventure well worth seeing. The harsher aspects of London’s book have been softened, but while the new film does feel juvenile, it’s not dumbed-down, more a Classics Illustrated comic brought to eye-popping life with glorious 21st century technology. Having lived most of his life in 1890’s California with Judge Miller (Bradley Whitford) and his family, Buck is a spoiled and beloved pet. But he also has a price on his head for those looking to provide large dogs to prospectors headed to the Yukon trail looking to strike it rich mining for gold. One night one of the judge’s employees dognaps Buck and takes him up North where he initially ends up pulling with a sled team for Canadian mail carriers. Perrault (Omar Sy) and Francoise (Cara Gee) who take...

Maybe it’s a sign of times that Harrison Ford is sharing a screen with a digital dog. Why use a real canine when a computer can make certain that a pixelated pup performs according to SAG rules and not his actual nature? You can hear the voices of future filmmakers, echoing throughout the Hollywood Hills: “Get more feeling into the mutt’s eyes.” “Make him run faster than a real dog can!” That’s the case in The Call of the Wild, the umpteenth screen version of Jack London...

With Buck, the famed St. Bernard/Farm Collie, serving as the protagonist in Fox’s latest adaptation of Jack London’s wilderness adventure, “The Call of the Wild,” there was never any question that he had to be CG, especially if he was going to hold his own on screen with Harrison Ford.
“Here’s the thing: No one is fooled by a CG animal,” said Chris Sanders, who made the transition from animation to a live-action/hybrid after directing “The Croods” and co-directing “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Lilo and Stitch.” “So the question that I confronted early on was: Do we try and make this look like a 100% real dog? Meaning, do we actually have him behaving as though he’s a trained dog on set, but doesn’t hit his marks quite right, and have some takes look as though it was good enough? Or do...

Woof. And not in the good way. “The Call of the Wild” — the first film released under Disney’s new 20th Century Studios moniker — is what happens when CGI goes too far (or perhaps not far enough).
Slow, emotionless and boasting fairly mediocre production values, this misguided kid movie turns Jack London’s classic tale about the natural world into something barely recognizable as part of that world.
Buck is a large half-Saint Bernard, half-Scotch Shepherd dog owned by Judge Miller (Bradley Whitford). After destroying a celebration the Judge’s family worked hard to put together, Buck is made to sleep outside, where he is kidnapped by a local who sells him off to a ring of dognappers who ship him to Gold Rush-era Alaska.

Joining legends like Charlton Heston and Clarke Gable, who have played the role of John Thornton in “The Call of the Wild,” Harrison Ford now stands next to a CGI-enhanced version of the dog named Buck in the latest adaptation of Jack London’s classic 1903 novel.
“I thought the film has a lot to say about human characters as well as animal characters,” Ford told Variety on the red carpet at the film’s premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.
“While the book does not have very much history for John Thornton, we were able to weave in a human story that parallels Buck’s story, and the events of the film bring these two characters — Buck to his destiny, [while] Thornton has an opportunity to gain humanity in Buck’s eyes because of their close relationship. Exclusive: For a couple of guys whose summer entry Avengers: Infinity War became only the fourth ever to top $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, and — at least until their sequel next summer — wiped out a good portion of the signature characters of the Marvel universe, Joe and Anthony Russo have been extreme multi-taskers, moving in overdrive to get their Agbo studio up and running. They’ve just firmed with Netflix plans for an India and Thailand shoot for Dhaka, a kidnap extraction drama that will star Chris Hemsworth — whose Thor character is central to the two Avengers films — and marks the feature directorial debut of Sam Hargrave. He has graduated from being Chris Evans’ stunt double in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to fight to stunt coordinator in Captain America: Civil War, to holding those jobs plus some second unit directing in Avengers: Infinity War. Throughout the last week or so, both Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 made their way onto your preferred digital platform. Having each surpassed the ten-figure plateau at the box office – one more emphatically than the other, obviously – it’s only natural to assume the Marvel fanbase would make the artificial release of the pair equally as successful, which it has, as the twain currently occupy the first and second spot on the iTunes Top Movies chart.

I had no idea that Rampage was based on a 1986 video game, I just knew it was a variation on the Dwayne Johnson and/or monster film to fill a spring slot until the good movies arrived. That it starred the always-appealing Johnson along with Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan made it a cut above somewhat interesting. Still, I passed on it at the theater once the reviews talked about it being predictable and average at best.
With the film on disc this week from Warner Home Entertainment, in the wake of Johnson’s Skyscraper hitting theaters, it’s a good time to finally give it a whirl.
Produced and directed by Brad Peyton, it reteams him with co-screenwriter Carlton Cuse and Johnson, the three previously having worked on the more-of-the-same Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas. The question is: do...

A lot of fans thought Peter Dinklage was the actor providing the voice of the villain Corvus Glaive in Avengers: Infinity War, but that's not the case. Dinklage is playing a completely different character because the directors confirmed over the weekend that the member of Thanos' Black Order was played by Constantine actor Michael Shaw.
While talking with CinemaBlend, Joe Russo revealed:
"It's a gentleman named Michael Shaw... He's an actor, and we cast a wide net for these characters."
Anthony Russo added:
"In the same way we were approaching Thanos with Josh Brolin to bring sort of a very grounded, realistic performance, we wanted to do that with everyone in the Black Order. So we cast very, very good actors for those."
He went on to talk about the work that went into bringing these character to life fpr the film saying:

Despite Marvel Studios dispatching promotional materials at an impressive rate, there’s still quite a lot we don’t know about the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
For example, did you know Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is playing a role in the film? In all the hubbub I’d completely forgotten, and while who exactly he’s portraying remains to be seen, fans thought they figured it out this week when a new clip dropped featuring Corvus Glaive, a member of Thanos’ Black Order who sounded an awful lot like the actor.
Now, however, we’re being told that the mystery still remains, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo have revealed that Glaive is actually being played by someone named Michael James Shaw, perhaps best known for his role as Papa Midnite on NBC’s Constantine.
