Bet announced on Tuesday that it has renewed its follow-up to the 1992 feature film as well as American Soul, both for Season 2.
“Making Boomerang has been one of the highlights of my career,” executive producer Lena Waithe said in a statement, “and the positive feedback we’ve gotten from fans and critics has been so validating. I’m beyond excited to dive even deeper into these characters’ lives in Season 2.”

Bet has renewed two of its freshman series for a second season, the Viacom network announced on Tuesday.
“Boomerang,” Lena Waithe’s TV sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, and the period drama “American Soul” have both been renewed for another outing at the network ahead of their respective season finales this week and next.
Executive produced by Waithe and original star Halle Berry, “Boomerang” is set 25 years after the events of the Eddie Murphy-Robin Givens romantic comedy. The sequel series, which centers on the original casts’ children as young marketing professionals trying to step out of their parents’ shadows, is set to wrap its 10-episode first season on Tuesday, April 9.

Bet announced today that the subversive relationship comedy Boomerang is coming back around for a new season while the groovin’ Don Cornelius-infused period drama American Soul will also return to the network with some new dance moves.
The news comes ahead of the season finale of American Soul which will air at 9 pm Et/Pt and be followed by a special episode of Boomerang written by Jenny Lee and Emmy award winner Lena Waithe, who serves as executive producer of the series alongside Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry.

On Thursday, People published the first look images of Williams, of Destiny’s Child fame, dressed to look like the now-74-year-old Motown icon way back in the day.
In one shot (seen below), Williams is wearing a sparkly red dress and cutting a rug with Sinqua Walls, who stars on the Bet series as Don Cornelius, the host and producer of “Soul Train,” who tries to convince Ross to come on his show.

The Viacom-owned network has cast Michelle Williams, of Destiny’s Child fame, to play the legendary Ross, who is courted by Cornelius to come on his show. Meanwhile, Gabrielle Dennis will play Tina Turner, who, at the time of the series, is enjoying a hugely successful career with her then-husband Ike as they perform “Proud Mary” on “Soul Train.” McKinley Freeman will play Ike.
Dennis, who played Whitney Houston in Bet’s “The Bobby Brown Story,” will be joined by Brown himself on the series, who play soul singer Rufus Thomas, best known for his classic “Do the Funky Chicken.”
