Coming from a Theatre background, Ruba Atiyeh worked on the theme of displacement and estrangement. She wrote and acted in plays, for which she was awarded. She held drama workshops with second and third generation immigrants; and estranged minority groups that came out with collective plays. Ruba has an MA in Documentary from Goldsmiths College, London. She started by making documentaries for commissioners, like Aljazeera Documentary, in addition to shorts.
Atiyeh teaches filmmaking at the Lebanese University, and has been a mentor for emerging documentary filmmakers from Syria and Lebanon. Atiyeh is a long time canvasser of Syriac history, heritage and Mesopotamian/Levantine mythology. She holds seminars and study groups on issues of social history, ethnicity, demographic engineering and citizenship in the Middle East.
Recently, Atiyeh has founded her own production company CeeFilm Beirut. The company focuses on producing films and publications that bring suppressed narratives to light. CeeFilm Beirut works in close partnership and collaboration with emerging Mena filmmakers, producers and writers, designing the production process in cooperative modules.
