There are tons of low-budget indie thrillers out there that deal with strong philosophical concepts in an inventive way and surprise audiences through their craft despite being bogged down by their limitations. Although director Michael Winnick’s lackluster track record didn’t leave much to expect from his latest thriller venture, Disquiet started with a proper atmospheric, imaginative buildup, but having a poor script, glaringly bad performances, and a clichéd narrative structure left a bitter taste, proving it doesn’t belong among those aforementioned ambitious ventures. Exploring the psychological turbulence of a person in jeopardy, Disquiet questions the legitimacy of reality and fiction in a surreal manner but falls short in execution and ends up as a bad adaptation of much superior supernatural thrillers that have aired throughout the past decade on the small screen.

Disquiet is defined as “a feeling of anxiety or worry”, and it’s something one often feels when in a hospital even if they’re just visiting. So imagine what Sam is feeling when he wakes up in a hospital with nobody answering the call button. Even worse, the patient in the next bed tries to strangle him, then chases him into the hall where Sam stabs him repeatedly with a scalpel, only for the body to vanish.
When a nurse does arrive she vanishes as soon as he looks away. And then the psycho guy returns, even ripping open the roof of the elevator trying to get at Sam. After escaping once again he has flashbacks to the accident that put him in the hospital.
That all takes place...

"Who the hell are they?!" Paramount has revealed an official trailer for a mystery thriller titled Disquiet, the latest from a filmmaker named Michael Winnick. This is another one of these low quality films being dumped on VOD, so many of them dropping everywhere nowadays. The direct-to-video supernatural thriller about a man trapped in a hospital with no exits trying to escape the mysterious beings trapped in there with him. He's haunted by "sinister forces that have no intention of letting him leave." Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars as Sam, along with Rachelle Goulding, Elyse Levesque, Lochlyn Munro, Garry Chalk, Trezzo Mahoro, Anita Brown, and Bradley Stryker. This looks so bad, it's not even worthy of being described as "made for TV" quality, it's even worse than that, folks. Ugh why are there so many films like this recently. ›››

As such, he’s made a movie under very different circumstances to most of the filmmakers we get to interview here at Den of Geek
I know Steven Seagal is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really hope that even if he isn’t yours you’ll give this interview a chance (that you’ve opened the article and are reading the introduction bit is a good sign). I think Michael Winnick has some interesting insights into the challenges of making a film.
It was early evening for me,...

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, action cinema was largely defined by a certain level of machismo. The typical action heroes were muscle-bound, seemingly invincible and known for their ability to dispatch one-dimensional villains with an endless supply of cheesy one-liners. The work of Arnold Schwarzenegger perhaps best exemplifies this particular style of filmmaking, but other stars like Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal played in that very same sandbox and became international stars as a result.
Today’s most popular action films have embraced a very different approach, wherein the heroes are far more fallible and human and the violence is more grounded and visceral. Think the Bourne films or Daniel Craig’s James Bond. In recent years, the old-school style of action has largely been relegated to direct-to-dvd projects and nostalgia trips like Stallone’s The Expendables franchise. However, the new Seagal thriller, Code of Honor,...

The painful mistakes people have made in their pasts can often harrowingly influence the decisions they make about their futures, and the way they interact with their communities in the present. That gripping sorrow that distressingly motivates people to take matters into their own hands, no matter what personal consequences they may later face, is intriguingly presented in actor Craig Sheffer’s new action film, ‘Code of Honor.’ The movie, which which Lionsgate Home Entertainment released today in select theaters and On Demand nationwide, was written and directed by Michael Winnick. The performer and filmmaker enthralligly present the idea that while revenge may seem satisfying in the moment, becoming a self-proclaimed [ Read More ]

What is that, you say? You never tire of watching Steven Seagal films, but gosh, you sure could use some fresh material? Production has begun on Code of Honor, a brand new Seagal film, in Salt Lake City, Ut. The film is being directed and was written by Girls, Guns and Gambling director Michael Winnick. Along with Seagal the film stars GGandG star, the Swedish export, Helena Mattsson, and from the look of Craig Sheffer these days, dollars to doughnuts he will play the bad guy. Code Of Honor is the story of a special forces colonel who has recently returned back home from the middle east after going on terminal leave. He quickly realizes his home town has disintegrated into a violent degenerate world run by...

Director: Morgan O'Neill
Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...

I have to admit, when I heard the title, “Guns, Girls, and Gambling”, my eyes glossed over and I stopped reading the rest of the article. Apparently I should have kept reading, because the film, despite it’s very direct-to-dvd title, has assembled itself quite the stellar cast, and now it’s added blonde Goddess Helena Mattsson to the list. The indie crime film, about the race for a priceless Hopi warrior mask stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino, will have Mattsson (below) playing an “educated, ice cold and lethal” hitwoman. She’ll be joining a cast that already includes Christian Slater, Gary Oldman, Dane Cook, Megan Park, and Chris Kattan. Look, you put Gary Oldman in a movie, and I’m there. You include Christian Slater, who is doing more interesting stuff now in direct-to-dvd land than he was doing back during his big-time A-lister days,...

Who's ready to see a really tall blonde assassin and a gay Elvis in the newest crime thriller? Man, that was a weird sentence to write. But that's just what you'll get from a couple of characters in "Guns, Girls and Gambling" as Chris Kattan and Helena Mattsson take on those two strange roles. The Michael Winnick film focuses on a race to get the Hopi warrior mask that gets stolen during the middle of a poker game at casino. Kattan and Mattsson join a cast that includes Gary Oldman, Megan Park, Christian Slater and Dane Cook. Principal photography is already underway in Utah for the Freefall Films production. Mattsson recently appeared on the big screen in "Iron Man 2" and for a few episodes on the hit television series "Desperate Housewives". SNL alum Chris Kattan is keeping his hand in television, appearing in the ABC comedy series "The Middle...

I wonder which part this girl will be involved in -- the guns or the gambling? Okay, I'm a little confused. Maybe she's the innocent girlfriend? Described as a cool, indie crime thriller, Michael Winnick's (Shadow Puppets) Guns, Girls and Gambling follows Christian Slater as he drunkenly joins an Elvis impersonator contest, running up against contender Gary Oldman and corrupt sheriff, Dane Cook. The story also involves a poker game, a priceless, stolen artifact, a frat boy, an assassin, a prostitute and a chase. Hey wait! Maybe that's it -- she's the hooker with a heart of gold?
Well, whomever she's playing, Megan Park (The Secret Life of the American Teenager has just joined the cast and where better to find a girl who likes guns and gambling than ABC Family? I guess Miley Cyrus's fee was too high.
Thanks Canada!

Actress Megan Park is jumping into the strange world of gambling and crime as she lands a role in "Guns, Girls and Gambling". The upcoming production, written and directed by Michael Winnick, is gathering up quite the cast of actors. Those that are already attached to the independent crime thriller include Dane Cook, Christian Slater and Gary Oldman."Guns" centers on one night when an Indian artifact is stolen at a casino in the middle of a poker game which quickly leads to a chase to get the piece. From then on you're faced with a bunch of crazy characters that include an amazon-like blonde assassin, an Elvis impersonator, a corrupt sheriff and other out-of-place people of that nature. Yeah, this kind of sounds like some overly disproportional version of "Smokin Aces". Furthermore, I really dig that film, so yeah this one strangely interests me.Initial filming commences on "Guns...

They already describe this project as “stylized crime thriller” with great cast. Can we blame them? Check this out: Christian Slater, Gary Oldman and Dane Cook have signed on to star in Michael Winnick’s upcoming project titled Guns, Girls and Gambling.
Ok, we do know that nobody actually expected to see Cook’s name on this list, but still, let’s give him a chance. At least he’s got himself some good company…
What we know about this movie is that “the story throws Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a 6-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute into a chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino.”
Slater will play “just an average guy who gets incredibly drunk and stumbles into an Elvis impersonator contest’, while Oldman will play the top Elvis contender.

Freefall Films will produce a new crime thriller entitled Girls, Guns & Gambling, set to begin filming July 6th. With a start date that close in sight, it's a good thing some casting has been announced. So far, Gary Oldman, Christian Slater, and Dane Cook are on board to star. While the casting may seem like an odd combination, it might be a worthy match for the material. There’s little known about the plot right now, but the following synopsis has been provided: "The story throws Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a 6-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute into a chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino." Slater is set to play a regular guy who becomes involved in an Elvis impersonation contest, Oldman will play the “mega-contender” of the contest, and Cook will play the sheriff.

In what might be one of the strangest assemblies of talent in recent news, Heat Vision says that Christian Slater, Gary Oldman and someone's fraternity brother Dane Cook will star in the stylized crime thriller Guns, Girls & Gambling from writer/director Michael Winnick. And if you think the casting combination is a bit strange, well the story throws it into overdrive too, as the film is said to involve Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a 6-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy (irony!), a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute in a chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino. What?! In this wacky cult classic in the making, Slater plays a "normal guy" who in a drunken stupor joins an Elvis impersonation contest. Oldman is the contest’s mega-contender, and Cook will play the sheriff (booo!). Well count me intrigued at least, but...

That's, uh, some kind of cast. Never thought I'd live to see the day where Gary Oldman shared the screen with Dane Cook, but it's coming, thanks to the casting director of Girls, Guns & Gambling, who apparently has quite the sense of humor. (And, no, it's not Christian Slater's mom, veteran casting director Mary Jo Slater.) The film is a crime thriller from writer/director Michael Winnick, and if you think it sounds like a weird ride based on the cast and title, just wait until you read the logline. Ok, we don't exactly have a logline, but THR says the film includes "Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a 6-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute into a chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino."
