Unlimited Global Academy is an evening of work directed by the British visual artist Rachel Gadsden and born of the notion of "invisible trauma". Handicapped by spinal problems and fast-diminishing sight, Gadsden has been working with a group of HIV-positive South African township dwellers who use art to explore their condition. She made contact with the group after visiting the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge and seeing a "bodymap" created by the painter Nondumiso Hlwele, who is one of the group.
This work, a graphic self-portrait illustrating the battle between the HIV virus and antiretroviral drugs, was the starting point for the evening's live performance event, Alchemy, created by the choreographer Athina Vahla. Alongside Gadsden, the piece features Freddie Opoku-Addaie, a contemporary dancer well known to UK audiences, and Sarah Chin, a working NHS physician who also trained in dance.
The work opens with Chin's entrance.

Wetting our appetites, short film, Decapode Shock, acts as the perfect accompaniment to Bustillo and Maury's genre-defying “horror” film, Livid. From a surreal part-animated sci-fi revenge tale with a horse-riding half-man half-crab wearing a spacesuit, Livid misleadingly takes us into the more mundane world of a caregiver.
Trainee Lucie (Chloe Coulloud) is shadowing Catherine (Catherine Jacob) for ten days, accompanying her to clients' houses to help with their daily injections. After Lucie's mother committed suicide some eight months earlier, her dad is working nights and they're desperate for money. The fact her dad's new girlfriend is soon to move in just makes matters worse. When Lucie discovers there's apparently “hidden treasure” in the house of a client, she's convinced by her equally poor fisherman boyfriend to seek it out but uncovers more than she ever dreamed of.
Bustillo and Maury signpost imminent disaster before we even meet Lucie through their suitably eerie title sequence.

One of the films that entered Austin’s Fantanstic Film Fest with a lot of buzz was the follow-up film from the directors of the French splatter film Inside. Livid, a film by Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo, is an entirely different type of film though. It is one that is more interested in creepy imagery and haunted house tropes than the buckets of blood seen in their break-out hit. You can read our early review of the film from Fantastic Fest by clicking Here. Judging from the first poster from the film, seen below, I will say that it gives a fair preview of what to expect in the film.

Nothing thus far at Ff 2011 had revolted me as much as previous years' screenings had. Luckily, I could rely upon writer-directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury to right that wrong. The plot is extremely simple. During Anna's (Chloé Marcq) first day at work as a home healthcare provider, she tags along with an old pro, Wilson (Catherine Jacob). Their rounds take them to a scary old mansion in which Jessel (Marie-Claude Pietragalla) is rotting away in a coma. Wilson happens to mention that the old hag has a treasure hidden in the mansion, and Anna promptly passes that information along to William (Félix Moati) and Ben...

Welcome back to my list of the 25 most anticipated films screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. So the first five films I chose on this list probably had mainstream moviegoers scratching their heads. Well you should know now that it won’t get too mainstream for me. Next on the list is two genre films playing in the Midnight Madness programme, one from my favourite director, plus two more that I look forward to watching.

Dimension Films has acquired a French horror film called Livid. The film is described as a horror fairytale set during Halloween night. It follows three teenagers who burglarize an old lady's desolate house. of course this is no ordinary house.
Two things pop up[ in my head when I read the basic plot of the story. First, the animated film Monster House which I loved, or the old school film The Haunting, both of which were based on homes that were actually alive. The second thing that popped in my head was a time when my friends and I broke into a old boarded up house that we thought was haunted. We year 15 or 16 year old looking for a ghost adventure. Anyway, the house truly was creepy, full of a bunch of stuff from the 1920's. It didn't look like anyone lived there. We got caught by a neighbor and talked our way out of it. We drove back around later that night and saw an old woman through one of the windows. Seeing this woman blew us away, and scared the hell out of us. One because there's no way anyone could live in that house, and two if someone did we actually broke into an old womans home.
I love classic ghost story haunted house films, so this is a film I'll be looking forward to seeing. It's also cool to see another film that will take place on Halloween night.
