"I was wondering if you could have me not even talk when I come over here." Magnolia Pics has revealed an official US trailer for an indie comedy titled The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, written and directed by and starring indie NYC filmmaker Joanna Arnow. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar last year, and went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, Vancouver, AFI Fest, Montclair, Denver, and many others. A mosaic-style comedy following the life of a woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Filmmaker Joanna Arnow's hilarious comedy, executive produced by Sean Baker, follows a 30-something New York woman as time passes in her relationships. Also starring Scott Cohen, Babak Tafti, Alysia Reiner, Peter Vack, and Parish Bradley. This kind of super dry, awkward humor won't be for everyone,...

In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term Bdsm relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him. “It’s like I don’t even exist.” While this moment immediately establishing the playful rules of Ann and Allen’s sexual agreement, Arnow also hits on an apt metaphor for the existential crisis of so many modern millennials: that they’re exposed and ignored in an unforgiving social climate still dominated by older generations.

Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.
Their questions, coming as the Jenji Kohan-created series celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its July 11, 2013, premiere, surfaced in a New Yorker story published ahead of SAG-AFTRA announcing an actors strike after the union failed to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) group of studios and streamers. The 2023 Cannes Market is behind us, and like clockwork, Neon managed to buy the winner of the Palme d’Or for the fourth straight year, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.”
But that wasn’t the only major sale. This year’s Marché du Film netted major domestic deals for some of the buzziest competition titles such as Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” as well as hot packages like “Paddington 3.” But uncertainty over the writers strike still loomed large, and distributors favored completed projects over packages.
Below are some of the deals we’ve tracked out of Cannes so far, and we’ll be updating this space with more sales as they come in.
Title: “Anselm”
Section: Special Screenings
Distributor: Sideshow and Janus Films
Wim Wenders had not one but two separate films play at this year’s Cannes, and now each have found a home.

[Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures will release the film in U.S. theaters April 26.]
“I love that you never do anything for me…it’s like I don’t even exist.”
That’s what Ann, a depressed thirty-something New Yorker, tells her older on-and-off Bdsm lover in the first scene of writer-director Joanna Arnow’s “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed,” in which the filmmaker also stars as Ann. Her heroine is an existentially moribund millennial wasting away in an anonymous-feeling corporate job who passes her time with sexual debasement when not quarreling with her nagging Jewish family.
This clever and disquieting indie unfolds at a clip somnambulant enough to match its lead’s spiritual stupor, whether she’s spreading her ass for her partners (clients?) or on the phone with her needling mother insisting that, no, she isn’t running out of breath despite trudging up and down the Manhattan streets.

It takes a moment to settle into the rhythm of Joanna Arnow’s droll directorial debut The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. The beginning riffs on a familiar scene of lovers in post-coital repose before offering something so different, it’s hard not to laugh. Ann (Arnow) lays on the sheets, staring at Allen (Scott Cohen), who is asleep under the covers. She inches closer until she’s on top of him. Then, the humping begins. “I like how you don’t care if I get off,” she says, “because it’s like I don’t even exist.” To that, her lover tiredly replies: “Can you not?”
Like most of the dialogue in The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, this line is delivered without any affect or hint of emotion. Arnow’s directorial debut plays with the mundanity of existence by extracting...

In this exclusive “Law & Order” clip from Nov. 10’s “Only the Lovely” episode, A.D.A. Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi) stops male colleagues Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) in their tracks when she takes the side of a reluctant female witness over theirs.
The case involves the murder of a female crisis consultant, which leads to Devon Miller (Mark Feuerstein), a con man who was a companion to several high society women. McCoy wants one of Miller’s other targets, Grace Pollard (Alysia Reiner), to testify, but she refuses as it would ruin her reputation as a lawyer who has advocated for women’s rights.
Nolan impatiently states, “Her ego is getting in the way,” but Maroun emphatically disagrees.
“No. It’s about legacy, preserving all the causes she’s advocated for,” she tells McCoy and Price, who are stunned by her vehemence on the issue.

The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, known for its oft-critical reports on Hollywood’s hiring practices and portrayals of underrepresented groups, is launching a “new focus” that will measure the film and TV industry’s depictions of a wide range of political issues, including abortion, gun violence, voting, marriage equality and interracial relationships.
The new approach comes in response to the Supreme Court’s overturning Roe v. Wade and concerns that other long-held rights also might be in danger.
“With the curtailing of reproductive rights, it is not only necessary to find legal solutions to protect marginalized communities, but it is essential to educate and inform audiences about these topics,” said Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “Entertainment has a unique ability to reach viewers and provide that education. "I did t all for you!" Mutiny Pictures has revealed the official trailer for an indie crime comedy film titled Lie Hard, arriving on VOD directly later in August. The title is an obvious play on Die Hard, but it doesn't seem to live up to that potential. To impress his girlfriend's wealthy parents, a pathological liar borrows 4 million from a crime syndicate to purchase a mansion. Unfortunately for him, all debts need to be paid back. They actually found a real Long Island mansion that was about to be razed – and razed it themselves for the film. The film stars Ian Niles, who also co-wrote and directed this, plus Melanie Chandra, Cathwerine Curtin, Joel Marsh Garland, Alysia Reiner, Claire Coffee, Patrick Kilpatrick, Jordan Lane Price, Karalynn Dunton, Ari Barkan, Adam Lindo, Sean Patrick Folster, and Sid O'Connell. This actually looks a bit better than it sounds, the right amount...

More than 180 people, including Planned Parenthood leaders and “Orange Is the New Black” star Alysia Reiner, were arrested for sitting and blocking an intersection approximately one block from the Supreme Court offices. The Capitol Police tweeted that they had issued a “third and final warning” to demonstrators to move before arresting them for “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.”
The Vice News video of Philipps’ arrest shows the “Freaks and Geeks” alum wearing a top with the slogan “I will aid and abet abortion” while being escorted away by officers. While film festivals continue to struggle in 2022 with gender parity and other benchmarks of inclusive selection, the Bentonville Film Festival has consistently programmed lineups from a majority of women, Bipoc, queer, disabled and other types of historically excluded filmmakers since its founding in 2015.

This article contains spoilers for Ms. Marvel Episode 1 and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Teenagers are naturally reckless, even the most well-meaning among them. When you add in superpowers, the results may be disastrous. So it’s no surprise that following the power Kamala Khan manifested at Avenger Con in the first episode of Ms. Marvel, she would receive the same treatment given to poor Peter Parker and friends in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the post-credit scene of the Ms. Marvel premier, we see footage of Kamala at Avenger Con being watched by Agent P. Cleary (Arian Moayed) of the Department of Damage Control (Dodc).
This isn’t the first time that Agent Cleary has dealt with a superhero. We last saw him in No Way Home investigating Peter, Mj, Ned, and Aunt May, after Mysterio revealed Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world. Those scenes gave us a taste of Cleary’s wily ways,...

“Ms. Marvel”, a six-episode series, is the newest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also known as the MCU. Debuting on Disney+ on June 8th, the series is based on the very popular comic book of the same name. However, this series takes the story into a whole new and exciting frame. I was granted an early look at the first two episodes, and they were so intriguing I can’t wait to see what happens next. But more on that in a minute!
First, let’s set the scene to give you a feel for the show.
Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero megafan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school...
