For the final film of Amityville month on Murder Made Fiction, Jenn and I are checking out Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening, the much maligned Dimension release that was shot in 2014 and eventually dumped on VOD in 2017.

The film, starring Bella Thorne and Cameron Monaghan as twin siblings who move into the Amityville house with their mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and younger sister (Mckenna Grace), occupies a strange place in the “franchise” canon.

Unlike most of the other texts, Amityville: The Awakening acknowledges the existence of the other films as films, specifically the 1979 original (listen), the 2005 remake (listen), and the incest-heavy prequel/sequel (listen). Admittedly Khalfoun’s script doesn’t go much further than that, descending into pretty basic/generic ‘Amityville haunting’ territory, but it’s an interesting wrinkle in what was clearly intended to be a theatrical re-launch for the “series.”

The mind-blowing aspect of Tron when it first hit theaters in July 1982 was that it portrayed a world inside a video game—a true digital world. Watching Jeff Bridges as "Flynn" jump from game to game in a completely abstract universe required imagination. Yet, no one could conceptualize the idea of that cybernetic world leaving the mainframe of a video game and entering the streets of suburbia.

That's what makes the trailer to Tron: Ares so fulfilling. The second of the trilogy, Tron: Legacy, was woefully underrated. The score, graphics, and direct connection to the original almost 30 years later was mesmerizing. Fans waiting 15 years after that were biting their collective lip until blood rushed out of their nose pending what Jared Leto would bring.

At CinemaCon, lead star Jared Leto reiterated that this movie will bring Tron into the real world, and the aforementioned preview showed Ares on his red-tinged light cycle zooming through a real city pursued by police cars who are no match for his speed.

There's some scepticism surrounding Tron: Ares, no great surprise when that first instalment remains so beloved. The same could have been said about Legacy once upon a time, though, and fans have been demanding a follow-up to that for years.

The Walt Disney Studios thrilled attendees at the 2025 CinemaCon Convention in Las Vegas today with exclusive looks at its upcoming theatrical releases, including films from its studios – Disney Live Action, Marvel Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, took the stage at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace to welcome attendees and speak about the outstanding cinematic events that Disney will be delivering to theaters in the coming months.

Bergman thanked the attendees and then turned the microphone over to Andrew Cripps, head of theatrical distribution, who spoke about the importance of the theatrical experience and the partnerships involved that work together to bring audiences to theaters.

Cripps showcased The Walt Disney Studios’ record-breaking 2024 slate before kicking off the Studio’s 2025 presentation with a montage of footage from Lilo & Stitch, a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic.

The lights went down in the Colosseum just after 3 p.m. on Thursday as a spectacle was about to unfold. Blue, green and red lasers shot out from every corner to fill the venue with light as Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges entered from the side of the stage to talk up their new film Tron: Ares.

Walt Disney also revealed a new look at its tentpole during its CinemaCon presentation at Caesars Palace. The film — a follow-up to the 1982 seminal science-fiction film Tron and the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy — stars Leto as Ares, a computer program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission to introduce artificial intelligence beings to humans.

“Well, first off, as a kid I was obsessed with Tron,” said Leto. “It was the ‘80s and the future felt like it was just around the corner. … Tron had action, adventure, spandex — lots of spandex.

The wait is almost over, and Tron: Ares is set to transport audiences back to the digital frontier, and now we have our first official look at Jared Leto in the first trailer for the movie, courtesy of Collider's Britta DeVore who saw the footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Covering Caesars Colosseum in an amazing laser light show, Disney unveiled a new teaser at CinemaCon today for Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the 43-year video game movie franchise. Slated for an October 10 theatrical release, the movie is directed by Joachim Rønning.

Jared Leto fanned out onstage with Jeff Bridges next to him: “As a kid I was obsessed with Tron. The future felt it was right around the corner,” Leto said. “It had everything I wanted from a movie — action, adventure and spandex — it took me to a world that I never knew.”

The sneak peek starts with two Tron cycles evading the police on a freeway. “I’m looking for something, something I did not understand,” Bridges says.

The third film in the “Tron” franchise, which began way back in 1982, arrives this October, with Jared Leto starring as a program named Ares who finds himself in the real world.

In addition to Leto as Ares, the cast also includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson and, of course, Bridges as Kevin Flynn, the creator of the computerized world of Tron.

Jared Leto’s sci-fi drama movie Mr. Nobody has finally received a streaming update, after more than a decade since its theatrical release. In the film, Leto plays Nemo Nobody, a 118-year-old man who becomes the last mortal on Earth.

Beginning on April 1, Mr. Nobody will officially start streaming on Max, along with its extended director’s cut. The film takes place in 2092, where humanity has attained immortality. The world watches as the last mortal human on Earth nears his death. With the help of a psychiatrist, he was able to remember parts of his life, while recalling three major points. As he continues to reflect, he also narrates alternate versions of the past.

The rich world of Gotham was full of twists, betrayals, and iconic character arcs, but some major DC storylines were planned and never made it to screen. Gotham proffered a thrilling glimpse into James Gordon’s early days in the Gotham City Police Department, offering origin stories for several classic characters and narratives from the Dcu timeline. However, there were several planned storylines that were dropped from the show, despite being planned or pitched.

Gotham, the TV series that delved into the origins of Batman’s mythos, aired for five seasons from 2014 to 2019. While it enjoyed a dedicated audience, the show faced challenges, including its fifth and final season being cut short. Originally intended to span a full 22 episodes, the last season was compressed into just 12, forcing showrunners to condense or abandon various storylines. Beyond this, some plotlines were scrapped because of viewer reactions, character popularity, or evolving creative decisions.

The popularity of the Star Wars Jedi video games has led to continued speculation that the Force-wielding protagonist, Cal Kestis, might one day make the leap to the big or small screen.

We've heard on multiple occasions that Gotham star Cameron Monaghan is likely to reprise this role in a live-action setting in the not-too-distant future. A third game is on the way, of course, but as that series is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it would be easy for an older Cal to make his presence felt in, say, the "Mandoverse," for example.

According to Daniel Richtman (via SFFGazette.com), Lucasfilm does finally have firm plans to bring Cal into a live-action Star Wars project, though there's no word on which one that will be.
