Adelaide teens take an occult party game too far in this terrific debut from Australian YouTube celebrities (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou. Inventive, creepy and confidently directed, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
After a deeply disturbing prologue, shot in an impressive single take, the film centres on Mia (Sophie Wilde), who’s grown more and more distant from her father (Marcus Johnson) since the traumatic loss of her mother, two years previously. Accordingly, Mia spends most of her time at her best friend Jade’s (Alexandra Jensen) house, which is slightly awkward, because Jade is dating Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel (Otis Dhanji).

Plot: A group of Australian teens use an embalmed hand to communicate with the dead.
Review: If there’s one thing you can rely on in horror movies is that a group of hard-partying teens are typically doomed. The kids in Talk to Me are a pretty mixed-up bunch, with them making an ill-advised decision to use an embalmed hand which allows them to host a spirit as long as they are in contact with the hand. The rule is if they have you for more than ninety seconds, you might be stuck with the spirit, and if you die with the spirit still in you, they have you forever. So why do the kids keep playing with the undead? Because apparently, being possessed feels fantastic, even if you lose all control and do messed-up things such as, in one moment, French kissing a dog.
Of course, you can bet that before long,...

As the Summer is reaching its final weeks are you looking for a super cool fun activity that will take your big late-night party to another level? Sure, “Spin the Bottle” and “Five Minutes in Heaven” are a bit of naughty fun, but where’s the danger? There’s certainly none in the classic board games (moving an icon from one square to the next) or the variations of pantomime. Aha, there’s the creepy ole’ Ouija board, but that’s too old-fashioned. Perhaps that’s why the kids in this flick from “down under” have come up with something that’s more of a direct “channel” to the “other side”. Plus it’s got a limited length, so it makes for an ideal online video. Now once the needed props are set up, the participants only need to recall a couple of commands, beginning with “Talk To Me”. Then watch out!

This article contains spoilers for "Talk to Me."
Loss and grief bring a lot of changes to one's life, more than it may initially appear. It's a personal, grim reminder of the final destination that awaits us all, a full-on wake-up call that it can and will happen to you. As much as a death by natural causes hangs over every human being, the specter of unnatural death looms even larger; not just for reasons of unfairness, but because it implies an additional amount of pain and suffering coming along with it.
Thus, it's a natural impulse for most people (and especially young people) to not so much confront their fears but to dismiss, belittle and mock them, in the hopes that they'll be sufficiently diminished. In YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou's debut feature, "Talk to Me," the world of the dead is treated as something to be laughed at,...

RackaRacka film-makers Michael and Danny Philippou let rip in their feature debut about suburban teens and an occult craze
The Philippou brothers, Michael and Danny, are young film-makers from Adelaide who started as production runners on Australian horror classic The Babadook and achieved a cult following for their film spoofs on YouTube under the handle RackaRacka; now with their debut feature they’ve let rip with a blast of wild punk energy and gleeful anarchy with this terrific scary movie. The opening party scene on its own has more voltage than a lot of horror movies, or any kind of movie. If the Sex Pistols ever directed a version of The Monkey’s Paw, it might look like this: a chilling adventure under which there is, however, an undertow of pathos, its title an ironic twist on the emotional pain involved in not talking about your feelings.

If the first episode of Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion has taught us anything, it’s to trust no one. With shocking Skrull reveals and even more shocking deaths, the six-episode series got off to a flying start as a loose adaptation of the 2008 comic series and a long-awaited standalone story for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Hopefully taking some of the secrets out of Secret Invasion, fans are hoping to find out more about Nicholas J. Fury. It took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 11 years to tell us how Fury ended up with his signature eyepatch in Captain Marvel, and with a convenient 30-year gap between that adventure and the events of Secret Invasion, there are plenty of gaps to fill in – even with him being a pile of dust for five of them.

There’s a stabbing, a violent suicide and a disturbing accident involving kangaroo roadkill in the opening minutes of Talk to Me, and from there, the adrenaline rush of this nightmarish collision of the living and the dead rarely lets up. Having made a name for themselves with the online comic horror and action content of their RackaRacka YouTube channel, Australian twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou vault into features with assurance and imagination, cooking up gut-wrenching thrills that deftly tap into their own background as viral-video sensations. Acquired out of Sundance by A24, the film is thematically a bit thin but doesn’t stint on genuine scares, intensity or revulsion.

Featuring a great premise from which to build a franchise, YouTube creators Danny and Michael Philippou’s directorial debut Talk To Me is a refreshing retread, imagining tantalizing “micro-possessions” that get stronger the more you use them. The premise is simple enough: a possessed hand that seems to have been passed down for generations opens a supernatural portal to the unknown, which can offer a brief moment of clarity before it inflicts unthinkable violence. As far as the violence goes, the film checks all the boxes with a murder/suicide opening sequence at an out-of-control house party, setting the affair in motion without giving away what’s to come.

A bundle of taut nerves stretched to their vomit-inducing breaking point, “Talk to Me,” the directorial feature debut from Australian brothers and Youtube stars Danny and Michael Philippou, is the type of horror film whose effectiveness arises from its barebones simplicity. It asks: What if “Flatliners” was rendered as a Monkey’s Paw for the teenage audiences that fuel today’s viral videos? What would the consequences, outside of personal shame (and minor embarrassment), be for those fame addicts? The film’s answer to these questions is stunning, if not an unbearable nightmare.

At the end of the ensuing confrontations in the Irreverent Season 1 finale, the hitman is dead — the real reverend Mackenzie (Pj Byrne) driving into a tower causes a cross to fall on him (and knocks out Clump’s internet) — and Piper must decide what she’s going to do with her new knowledge. Donnell breaks down where Paulo is at the end of the season. Talk about Paulo losing Lewis [Marcus Johnson]. Like you said, he’s the one guy he trusts. Colin Donnell: He was. Screenwriter and playwright Stephen Sewell makes his directing debut on Embedded, an erotic thriller which he promises will be hard-hitting and controversial.
Shooting started in Sydney on Monday on what is essentially a two-hander, set mostly in a suite at a five-star hotel. The plot follows a battle-weary Australian war correspondent named Frank, who meets a darkly fascinating woman on his way home.
The two retire to his hotel suite where Frank finds his match in a frightening and erotic game of truth or dare that takes both to the edge, and over.
Playing the couple are Los Angeles-based Aussies Nick Barkla (Blind Company, TV.s Rush) and Laura Gordon (Saw V, TV.s Twentysomething). Marcus Johnson plays the hotel porter.
The producer is Steve Jaggi (Circle of Lies) via his Indefatigable Pictures banner. Jaggi tells If that Sewell intends to .push the envelope. with a film that sets out...

Not to knock the source material, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has accomplished the unthinkable. They've created versions of characters previously deemed too complicated or unfamiliar and made them connect with audiences in a big way. Iron Man became an A-List hero after spending decades in Spider-Man's shadow. Thor, a riff on Norse mythology tied to an impenetrable and retconned to death origin, was turned into a charismatic warrior with a surprising knack for comedy. "Marvel's the Avengers" was the franchise's crowning achievement, proving that the Hulk can be done right outside of comics in addition to creating what could go down as one of the best Avengers stories told in any medium.
With all of the success the Marvel films have had, it's no wonder the comic books have slowly started incorporating these changes, either as a reaction to or in anticipation of their big screen counterparts.

Not too long ago, Marvel made the unusual decision to introduce a Samuel L. Jackson lookalike Nick Fury to the 616 Universe, despite the fact that the version played by the actor in their Cinematic Universe was inspired by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's creation from The Ultimates. The classic version of the character has meanwhile faded into the background, leaving a lot of long-time fans more than a little disgruntled. So, how do they all relate to each other and the live action take on the character who most recently appeared in The Avengers. Below is an excerpt from an interview with Comic Book Resources. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read it in full! On a similar track, I made a list of characters that were breakout heroes in the Marvel U, starting with... are we calling him Marcus Johnson still?...

We already know that Marcus Johnson Nick Fury is keeping tabs on Cable and Nova, but it looks like Ant-Man will also be playing a big role in this October's Marvel Now! initiative. So, who exactly is behind the mask? It could be the original Hank Pym (especially now that work on the film is finally moving ahead) but it seems far more likely that it is in fact Scott Lang. He was brought back from the dead in the pages of Avengers: The Children's Crusade, while the latest hero to hold the title - Eric O'Grady - was murdered in Secret Avengers and brought back as a bad guy to spy on the team. Talking to Newsarama, Marvel senior vice president of publishing Tom Brevoort has addressed the controversial introduction of "Nick Fury Jr." into the Marvel Universe. In Battle Scars, Marcus Johnson was revealed to be the son of Nick Fury, and by the end of issue #6 he had not only discovered that his name was really Nick Fury Jr., but also gained an eye patch, goatee and striking resemblance to Samuel L. Jackson. While the Fury who appears in Marvel's The Avengers was based on the one in The Ultimates created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, Brevoort explains here why they decided to create a 616 version of the character. To read the interview in full, in which he discusses where Nick Fury Jr. will next appear as well as the decision to introduce Agent Coulson and much more, be sure to click on the link below to head on over...

With Oscar night only a few days away, best-picture frontrunner The Hurt Locker has had a rough week, with veterans’ sounding off on its inaccuracies, its producer’s being barred from the ceremony, and a man’s claiming the movie’s main character (played by Jeremy Renner) is based off him and filing a lawsuit. So we asked Marcus Johnson, a veteran of the Iraq war, to tell us how close to real life The Hurt Locker is. Last week, Paul Rieckhoff, director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, wrote on Newsweek.com that inaccuracies in The Hurt Locker reveal “not only a lack of research, but ultimately [a lack of] respect for the American military.” Rieckhoff echoes the sentiment of many veterans who have expressed everything from disinterest in the film to blatant outrage at its distorted portrayal of combat life in Iraq. As a fellow veteran of the Iraq war,...
