The new spy thriller set during World War II entitled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has the unique distinction of being a somewhat true account of not only a pivotal mission during the campaign, but also of the germination of the character of James Bond – to a certain extent at least.
Ostensibly based on true events documented in recently declassified British War Department documents, the film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare imparts the tale of an organization created during World War II under the guidance of Prime Minister Winston Chruchill. This “top-secret” unit is comprised of a group of men (and one woman) brought together by Gus March-Phillips (Henry Cavill) to undertake an audacious mission that could alter the course of the war against the Nazis.
Phillips is recruited for this mission by Brigadier Gubbins (Cary Elwes) – otherwise known as “M” – and his second in command Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox...

The reviews are in for “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” which opens in theaters this Friday, May 12. But critics aren’t raving about Guy Ritchie’s new take on the classic Excalibur tale, which stars Charlie Hunnam in the title role. In his C- review, IndieWire’s David Ehrlich describes the blockbuster as “part ‘Game of Thrones,’ part ‘Snatch,’ and almost all bad.” He adds, “If it weren’t so boring, it would almost be impressive how fast — and how comprehensively — Ritchie and fellow screenwriters Lionel Wigram and Joby Harold are able to make a mess of things.”

The documentary director takes a gruesomely close look at the much-demonised rodents
The villains of this lurid horror movie are “very sophisticated and diabolically clever”. So says Ed Sheehan, cigar-chomping elder statesman of the extermination business. And he should know. He has spent 48 years of his life on the front line of the battle against one of mankind’s most resourceful enemies: the rat.
Employing every grisly gross-out tactic in the film-maker’s lexicon, with this stomach-turning shock-doc, director Morgan Spurlock ensures that indifference to the world’s least favourite sewer-dwelling trash-eater is not an option. A title font that looks as though it was lifted from a James Herbert novel sets the tone, along with Psycho-style screeching stabs on the score and almost subliminal flashes of yellowed rodent teeth lunging towards the camera. This is not a measured, balanced examination of the natural history of rats. This is a...

The highly respected filmmaker Denis Villeneuve certainly seems to have settled himself into the genre of science fiction, having delivered the intense dramas of Enemy, Prisoners and Sicario in recent years. His latest release – Arrival – is currently wowing festival audiences with its imagining of a first contact situation with aliens, while he has already moved from that to his new project, Blade Runner 2. In promoting Arrival, however, he has spoken of his long-standing ambition to make a new adaptation of the 1965 James Herbert novel, Dune.
Many have tried to put the vast space epic onto the big screen – including Alejandro Jodorowsky in 1974 and Ridley Scott, in 1979. But David Lynch is, thus far, the only filmmaker to have made a theatrical version of the story – arriving at cinemas in 1984. In 2000 and 2003, the Sci Fi Channel broadcast Dune and Children Of Dune as television mini-series, but the big screen has eluded Dune for decades.

Any comparison that places Ethan Hunt over James Herbert Bond feels sacrilegious. Bond is cooler, more prestigious, and more iconic and, on top of that, he’s the greater box office titan. But after seeing Mission:Impossible – Rogue Nation, before which has been playing a trailer for Spectre, there’s an inescapable feeling that M:i has finally unseated Bond at the top of the superspy genre. And really, when you stack the last three M:i films against the last three Daniel Craig Bonds, the winner is clear.
One can only guess about the impending Spectre of course – which looks to be a worthy continuation of Skyfall director Sam Mendes’ wonderful vision – but, even so, film fans the world over should be 10x more excited for the barely-confirmed sixth Mission: Impossible film than for the next Bond outing. Let me tell you why.

Working across a wide range of musical mediums, Ivor Novello Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton has embraced everything from large scale orchestral and choral works to innovative electronic sound design, live salsa bands to post-rock guitar line-ups.
From The Counselor, The Awakening and the upcoming Steve Jobs film, to name a few, Pemberton has delivered another eclectic score – this time Guy Ritchie’s latest movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E., in theatres Friday, August 14.
Fans of the TV show are familiar with the theme music from composer Jerry Goldsmith, with additional music for the various seasons provided by Morton Stevens, Walter Scharf, Lalo Schifrin, Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin and Nelson Riddle.
Now comes the film version and a 5-star, international score that exudes the 1960’s as if it was pulled from a time vault. You’re right into the film from the first musical note and drum beat.

Quite understandably, column inches can't fill up quickly enough with praise for the likes of Netflix original series House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and Marvel's Daredevil. What though, about some of the lesser-known series available on the UK streaming site?
Sweeping past the well-publicised riches of Doctor Who, Sherlock, Arrested Development, Community and the like, we've ventured into the slightly dustier shelf of TV shows available on Netflix UK that may be lesser-known or less widely celebrated than the big hitters out there, but are still richly deserving of your time. I love the tale of King Arthur. It's a great fantasy story with a rich history and potential. As such, I've been looking forward to seeing how Guy Ritchie would handle the tale, and what he would be changing. Today, cameras have started rolling on the film, and we're able to get a little more information on plot:

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Also recognized in this year's nominations is Scream Factory's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray, NBC's Hannibal TV series, Only Lovers Left Alive, and many more.

A psychotic outbreak affects all the dogs in Budapest in Kornél Mundruczó’s energetic and imaginative film
Kornél Mundruczó’s work has in the past been self-conscious, opaque and implausible. Well, implausibility is probably still an issue with his new film, but there has been a great leap forward in energy, flair and imagination. It’s a more arresting and entertaining movie than I ever expected from this director: a captivatingly bizarre quasi-horror thriller drama about a mass canine uprising in Budapest that could have been crafted by Hitchcock or James Herbert. Lili is an unhappy little girl who has to go and live with her disagreeable dad when her parents split up. He hates her beloved labrador cross, Hagen, and chucks him out on the street. We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

The regional critics groups have begun dishing out kudos, starting today with the Boston Online Film Critics Association. And happily, we're kicking things off with an outside-the-box choice that hopefully sets the stage for this wide open season. Note to critics groups: it's Ok to be this adventurous. Though of course, it helps when your group is smaller. That lends itself to quirky, more individualistic choices. The Boston online crowd has sprung for "Snowpiercer" as the year's best film, also handing Tilda Swinton the supporting actress prize for her performance therein. "Birdman" took the most honors with Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton) and Best Ensemble. Also making a nice showing was John Michael McDonagh's "Calvary." Check out the full list of winners below, and remember to keep track of it all at The Circuit. Best Picture "Snowpiercer" Best Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Birdman" Best Actor Brendan Gleeson,...

Correction & Apology: I had originally stated these were the winners for the Boston Society of Film Critics, a group with a long fascinating history. Unfortunately, as is all too common these days these prizes are from an upstart critics group from the same city, the Boston Online Film Critics Association*.
The young Bofca (now in its third year) seem to have issued some sort of challenge to the far more famous Bsfc. The Bsfc has had a place of honor in critics circles in that, for many years of their history, they seemed less interested in the Oscar race than actually offering an opinion on the best of a given film year which is, we unfortunately need reminding, the entire purpose of critical year-end prizes. In recent years their choices have seemed as Oscar driven as 90% of the critics groups that exist today. So perhaps the younger organization will remind...

Every new Tom Cruise movie these days almost demands immediate analysis about what his latest means for him and his career. In the case of Edge of Tomorrow, the science-fiction war movie that weds Starship Troopers with Saving Private Ryan with Groundhog Day, it means a lot of fun. Cruise plays a military mouthpiece whose only job is to sell the war against invading aliens to the public, but when the commanding general (Brendan Gleason) orders him to the front on D-Day, he tries to talk his way out of it, gets demoted, and finds himself dropped on the French...

Who wouldn't like to restart the day before and correct all their missteps? Not spilling that cup of coffee. Not wearing those mismatched socks. Not getting on your boss’s bad side. And how about buying a winning lottery ticket now that you know the numbers?
Well, in Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow, based on Hiroshi Sakurazka’s novel All You Need Is Kill, Tom Cruise as Major William Cage has multiple chances to set right his previous day's flubs, but the end result will be more momentous if he succeeds. You see, Cage, and only Cage, can save mankind from an alien invasion.
All our hero has to do is figure out how to prevent these brutal, tentacled savages who’ve landed on our planet from slaughtering him and his female sidekick Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) so the pair can locate and destroy the extraterrestrials' power core. To do so,...

Principal photography will begin on September 9 on Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The film is the first to be made under filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s and producer Lionel Wigram’s new production shingle, Ritchie/Wigram Productions, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros.
Having successfully re-imagined the classic detective Sherlock Holmes in two hit films, the pair now bring their fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series by bringing super spies Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin to the big screen. The original TV show starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum.
Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin, alongside stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant (“Cloud Atlas”) as Waverly.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that Tom Cruise's new sci-fi film All You Need is Kill has been re-titled Edge of Tomorrow, and a badass new poster has been released for it!
Personally I think All You Need is Kill is a much better title. Edge of Tomorrow sounds like a basic, boring movie title for a film I wouldn't be interested in seeing. It also sounds like a film Roland Emmerich would direct.
Warner Bros. has announced that they are officially bringing the movie to Comic-Con, and they will give fans a look at the first footage from the Doug Liman-directed film. I can't wait to see it! Especially after seeing this poster. Here is the press release with all of the details:

“Gangster Squad” is a western masquerading as a gangster movie. It takes place in the Wild West — a virtually lawless 1949 Los Angeles — and some very bad dudes hold the town hostage. All the law can do is round up a bunch of good guys willing to be as bad as the bad guys and then run ‘em out of town. As these things go, this Warner Bros. production has an unusually starry cast and striking look with vintage cars and glistening period effects that pop off the screen. "The only reason to put yourself through Guy Ritchie's overblown, inelegant Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows is to see Jared Harris, who plays Professor Moriarty, in a chilling low key," argues New York's David Edelstein. "As Holmes's nemesis, Harris suggests a short, unprepossessing brainiac who was mercilessly taunted in prep school, with the result that he is now a bitter nihilist, quietly determined both to trigger a world war and supply the weaponry. I wonder if Harris, who grew up knowing he'd never cut as dashing a figure as his leading-man father, Richard, dipped into his private well of bitterness for his scenes opposite Robert Downey Jr, whose Holmes is in the capering, somewhat fruity mode of… Richard Harris. In any case, Downey is only good when face-to-face with Harris: grounded, alert, angry instead of peevish. Opposite Jude Law's Watson, he flaps his arms and carries on...
