RealD is pleased to announce the honorees for its second annual “RealD Innovation in 3D Award,” James Cameron and Jon Landau, recognizing their extraordinary contribution to 3D cinema with the 2009 feature film release of Avatar. We've been hearing a lot of talk in recent months about 3-D television, and how it is going to transform the home entertainment experience. The latest news in that trend comes from Toshiba and RealD, who have announced that they are set to cooperate in bringing 3D technology to Toshiba TVs, including support for the stereoscopic RealD Format, as Toshiba advances development of Regza TVs able to deliver HD quality 3D content.
According to Toshiba, the companies will also work together on technology for active eyewear compatible with Toshiba 3D-enabled displays. I'll have a few thoughts about this in a moment, but first, here's the release:
"Toshiba plans to introduce 3D into our Regza line-up of Full-hd LCD TVs in 2010, and we are delighted to work with RealD, the clear leader in the industry," said Masaaki Osumi, President and CEO, Digital Media Network Company, Toshiba Corporation. "Home viewing is fast...

With four stellar competitors left standing, Wednesday's Top Chef finale (part one) was the ultimate nail-biter. Somebody had to go home, but first the top 4 -- Jennifer, Michael V., Bryan V. and Kevin -- had to contend with a final Quickfire and elimination challenge. All Aboard: Arriving in Napa Valley, Calif., for the finale, the foursome hopped aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train where they had 30 minutes to cook a dish that featured grapes from the region for a pregnant Padma Lakshmi and guest judge Michael Chiarello. But the rocking train threatened to derail even the most confident cooks. The...

Las Vegas has been a major character all season on Top Chef, but on Wednesday the chef-testants came face to face with something truly emblematic of Sin City when the six remaining chefs had to cook up a dish inspired by a visit to a classic casino. And in their Quickfire, they had to contend with another Vegas staple: room service! Breakfast in Bed: With Nigella Lawson serving as this week's guest judge, things got off to a luxurious start. The chefs had 30 minutes to make a dish in the basement kitchen of the Venetian, then carry it upstairs to Lawson and Padma, who were both wearing robes. Despite the light touch, the chefs who prepared the heaviest, meatiest dishes actually wowed the ladies the most: Kevin's play on steak and eggs delighted Lawson, but Eli's twist on the Reuben sandwich -- using poached eggs -- won the chef the Quickfire challenge,...

There are only eight chef-testants left -- which can only mean one thing: Restaurant Wars! But before the epic showdown began, the chefs were split into teams for a Quickfire Challenge that rendered them blind and mute. Quickfire: With guest judge Rick Moonen, a champion of sustainable cooking and seafood, at the helm, the chefs drew knives and split into two teams led by Jennifer C. and Michael Voltaggio. Jen selected Kevin; Mike Isabella; and Laurine, while Michael V. enlisted his brother; Eli and Robin, who was, shocker, picked last. The teams had 40 minutes to prepare a dish relay-style, with each chef getting 10 minutes to cook. While they weren't working, they wore a blindfold. Also, there was no talking allowed -- sort of like a culinary game of Telephone. Blind Items: Jen started by prepping a seafood stock and a pot of olive oil that she hoped to use to poach black cod.

From the (frankly creepy) comment he made on last week's episode, it was almost a given that Ash was next go on Top Chef. Nominated for elimination along with challenge partner Michael V., Ash admitted that he essentially played second fiddle to his partner during the conceptualization and preparation of their dish, the halibut topped with egg yolk ravioli and some salad with asparagus and fennel. He was totally at peace with the idea, even saying that it was Ok, since he had high respect for Michael as a chef and it was like washing the paintbrush of Picasso.
Needless to say, the judges were pissed, because, after all, they are looking for Top Chef, not Top Sous Chef. And they had something to say about that. So on last night's episode, Ash's head was in the chopping block for the second week in a row. For a change this week,...

Top Chef took a homespun -- but no less gourmet -- turn this week as the 10 remaining cheftestants got to work in the kitchen of the Top Chef house, cooking up a family style dinner party for a spate of celebrity chefs. Again, the chefs were paired up -- prompting some heat between several pairs. Quickfire: Guest judge Tyler Florence presided over the Quickfire challenge. The chefs were randomly assigned three words to describe the "mood, taste and texture" of a dish they would have to cook. In a flashy Vegas twist, the adjectives were furnished via a slot machine -- and ranged from the specific ("spicy") to the abstract ("romantic") to the possibly new-to-some-viewers ("umami," one of the five basic tastes which vaguely corresponds to "earthy or meaty"). Among the lowlights: Eli, whose umami mushroom dish was drowning in citrus; Jennifer's scallop and caviar combo; and Robin, whose curry...

A little bit of magic and lots of skill -- that's what the judges demanded on Wednesday's Top Chef. The contestants were visited by Las Vegas illusionists Penn and Teller -- and graced by returning judge Toby Young. Quickfire: Special guest Michelle Bernstein announced the Quickfire challenge: Create a dish that showcases the "angel and devil" sides of your personality. Bernstein loved Robin's plate, which featured a salad and an apple crumble. "To walk into that salad was an absolute pleasure," she said, before announcing Robin the winner. She even bested frontrunner Michael V. and Eli, who made a decadent risotto. This did not make her fellow chefs happy. Drama Alert: After already complaining about her inccessant talking in the kitchen, many of the contestants bemoaned Mattin's dismissal (and sported his red neckerchiefs in tribute) and complained about the fact that Robin was still there after serving up toxic shrimp last week.

There's the adage "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen" -- and then there was Wednesday's Top Chef, where the kitchen was literally an infernal desert. Many of the chefs couldn't handle 100-degree-plus temperatures -- but luckily only one was sent home after serving a meal to ranchers outside Las Vegas. Quickfire: The cheftestants got a taste of the Southwestern direction the episode was heading when they were asked to cook a dish made from cactus. The slimy item proved to be a formidable ingredient for some, but not necessarily as tough as no-nonsense guest judge Tim Love. The winner of the challenge, Mike Isabella, nabbed $15,000 and praise for properly treating the cactus. (He cured it, by the way, to take the slime out). While the losers, Ash (for his dry tortilla concoction) and Ron, whose dish featured "crab [that] tasted rancid" to Love -- earned his consternation.

Talk about a tasty pairing. Despite the fevered battle for dining dominance, two cheftestants showed they could generate heat whether they were cooking or not. Is it just that hotties Jennifer and Michael V. recognize each other's excellence—or are they just getting sweet on each other? Watch the clip and you make the call. Besides that plateful of sexytime, the episode featured a snail-tastic Quickfire elimination, a tableful of the finest French chefs as judges and at least one culinary shocker: There can be too much bacon.

The success of Warner Bros.'s Journey to the Center of the Earth will likely pressure exhibitors and distributors to find ways to roll out digital presentation systems more quickly. Journey delivered an opening weekend gross of $20.58 million, with 57 percent of the gross coming from theaters equipped to show the film in Real D 3D. This Brendan Fraser family action film is the first live-action, narrative Digital 3D film, and the movie performed 3.1 times better in 3D than it did in traditional presentation. I spoke with Real D Chairman/CEO and Co-Founder Michael V. Lewis on Sunday, and he says that Journey delivered an estimated Per Theatre Average of $12,000 in Digital 3D this weekend compared to just $4,000 elsewhere. Given the success of 2007’s Beowulf (DreamWorks/Paramount) and the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour Movie (Disney) early this year, it is fair to question why.
