The opening act of Richard Marquand's 1983 sci-fantasy epic "Return of the Jedi," a film set in the universe of the animated series "Droids," takes place on the desert planet of Tatooine. While there, the stalwart heroes Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), sneak into the criminal palace of the evil crime lord Jabba the Hutt to rescue their imprisoned friend, Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Their plan isn't entirely clear, sadly, and they are all eventually caught. This leads to a scene out in the desert where Jabba forces them to walk the plank into the waiting open mouth of an enormous desert creature called a Sarlacc. Thanks to their fighting acumen, our heroes kill off the bad guys, escape in a jet, and blow up Jabba's desert barge for good measure.

This fabulous new release of the Hammer Horror classic comes with a generous slate of features which includes not one but two separate audio commentaries. The one by Marcus Hearn and Jonathan Rigby is fairly conventional - which is not to say uninteresting - taking viewers through the film step by step as it unfolds and discussing aspects of production and stories from the set. The other, by academic Kelly Robinson, is truly fascinating, focusing as it does on wider aspects of the mummy as a character in European and North American fiction, and probing the ways in which it differs from Hammer's previously established monsters Count Dracula and Baron Frankenstein's creation, by virtue of its lack of a foundational narrative. Drawing together the cinematic and the literary, this is a real treat, the sort of in-depth material which is hard to access outside educational settings, and it adds considerable.

With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.
Humanoids from Atlantis
Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely...

When I was a kid, I somehow inherited an 8mm film projector and managed to convince my mom to buy me a handful of movies on the format. Now when I say “movies,” I mean these little spools of 8mm celluloid that basically took various motion pictures and condensed them down to silent 10-minute highlight reels, mostly in black and white.
They were in many ways the earliest precursor of home video, and one of the films I convinced my mom to purchase was Hammer Films’ Taste the Blood of Dracula. While the format really prevented me from making much sense of the narrative, certain imagery–Dracula’s face emerging from beneath a cracking caul of dust, two beautiful young women driving a stake into the heart of an older gentleman, a younger man drinking a cup of blood and choking as it poured out of his mouth–stayed firmly with me.

We’ve got a ton of great titles on the docket for this final week of home media releases in August. Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is hitting various formats on Tuesday, and if you’re looking for some oddball entertainment, The Banana Splits Movie should undoubtedly do the trick. For all you sci-fi fans out there, the classic V miniseries is finally making its way to Blu, and Scream Factory is also giving both The Leech Woman and Fear in the Night the HD treatment as well.

I'm very excited for Scream Factory's continued release of the Hammer catalog. Scars of Dracula had been out-of-print on DVD for ages and hasn't had a stateside Blu-ray release, but that's changing on September 10th. Here's a look at the official cover art and the list of bonus features:

Hammer’s attempt at a budget monster romp for 1966 isn’t quite as good as its sister film Plague of the Zombies, but it has fine atmosphere and a couple of worthy grace notes, namely its fine actresses Jennifer Daniel and Jacqueline Pearce. Although the title monster bites some fans the wrong way, it works for this reviewer — it’s every appearance is a surprise, and for me it’s convincingly… reptilian.

Just as there have been many spooky villains in Hammer movies over the years, there have also been many protagonists who protect our world from unholy horrors. Having appeared in several British serials and three movies, Professor Bernard Quatermass is one such hero, and Scream Factory is celebrating the iconic character by releasing Quatermass 2 and Quatermass and the Pit on respective Blu-rays. Originally slated to come out in May, the Blu-rays are now scheduled for a July 30th release, and we've been provided with the full list of special features.

Saucy Jack has long been meat for the horror mill; my first experience with him was Time after Time (1979), where he time traveled to the future and found he was just another serial killer. But in 1888 he was the first, logging around five prostitutes in the Whitechapel area of London; big numbers for the day and the fact that the case was never solved has turned the Ripper’s exploits into its own cottage industry. As for Jack’s indelible horror image, that starts proper with Jack the Ripper (1959), an effective and grisly independent British shocker brought back to life in a cracking new Blu-ray release from Severin Films.
Released in the U.K. in May of ’58 by Regal Films International, Jack the Ripper was picked up by producer Joseph E. Levine (Magic) and distributed by Paramount stateside in early ’59; some alterations were made for the U.S. release, including...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

Starting out in 1939 as the little studio that could, Hammer would finally make their reputation in the late fifties reimagining Universal’s black and white horrors as eye-popping Technicolor gothics – their pictorial beauty, thanks to cameramen like Jack Asher and Arthur Ibbetson, was fundamental to the studio’s legacy. So it’s been more than a little frustrating to see such disrespect visited upon these films by home video companies happy to smother the market with grainy prints, incoherent cropping and under-saturated colors. The House of Hammer and the film community in general deserve far better than that.
Thanks to Indicator, the home video arm of Powerhouse films based in the UK, those wrongs are beginning to be righted, starting with their impressive new release of Hammer shockers, Fear Warning! Even better news for stateside fans; the set is region-free, ready to be relished the world over.

Dr. Georges Bonnet (Anton Diffring) is not a bad guy, but he’s starting to do some bad things. Having found a medical solution that prevents him from aging (it has to do with “glands,” so fashionable in this era), he has maintained his youthful appearance despite having lived for 104 years. But time is running out. The doctor who has performed the maintenance surgeries (Arnold Marle) can no longer operate, and he’s running late in even arriving. Georges has also fallen deeply in love, and isn’t ready yet to leave town, as his cover story demands. Can this polite society man maintain propriety with death knocking?

Hammer’s massive global restoration project has yielded some impressive offerings but their latest project may be their most important. Terence Fisher’s 1958 classic Dracula is now fully restored in High Definition and is available on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time.
The plot is simple. Jonathan Harker takes employment with Count Dracula, in the guise of a librarian for his vast library. Harker is actually a vampire hunter on a mission to kill Dracula. However, when he is bested and becomes one of the walking dead himself, Dracula targets those closest to him. Dr. Van Helsing is tasked to defeat Dracula once and for all. This sets in motion a battle against time to find the lair of the evil Count before it is too late.

This sets in motion a battle against time to find the lair of the evil Count before it is too late.
This three disc set by Lionsgate includes two versions on the Blu-ray disc of the feature: the 2007 British...

When you think about vampires the images that spring readily to mind are of tall, dark handsome strangers, of the seduction of the innocent, of smouldering looks and sexual frission, of low cut gowns and bare, bloody breasts. Well they do to my mind, anyway, having been brought up on Hammer films and then graduating to the likes of Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce (1985), Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark (1987), Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987), and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992), all of which propagate the dark and sexy image of Transylvania’s least favourite cold caller.
It wasn’t always this way, though. When vampires first appeared on the silver screen they were awkward, ugly things that anybody in their right mind would run from rather than to. Some of them had bald heads, big ears and too many teeth like Max Schreck’s timeless portrayal of Nosferatu (1922), a look...

Hammer have pleased Horror fans and B-cinema lovers everywhere by releasing their classic horror library on Blu-Ray. This massive global restoration project was a major financial undertaking for Hammer and its partner, Studio Canal. After a horde of such releases, the 1958 classic Dracula has been dutifully restored on this beautiful format, and is set for release March 18th, 2013. In addition to this title, Hammer also expects to roll out a few more titles later this year. This restoration will also include unearthed footage and restored deleted footage, including a more graphic and gory version of Dracula formally deemed “too erotic” by censors of the era.
Marcus Hearn, expert historian and author of The Hammer Vault and who was heavily involved with this process, was kind enough to give up his time to briefly touch on his personal history with Hammer, the new generation of Hammer films, the actually restoring Dracula,...

Dracula is back from beyond the grave - and he's looking even more fangtastic than ever.
The 1958 classic Dracula, starring Christopher Lee as the count and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing, has been fully restored in high definition and is coming to Blu-ray and DVD for the first time.
It will be released in the UK on March 18, 2013.
Hammer, Icon Film Distribution and Lionsgate have called it "a major event in British film history." Details of the release, including the extras, are included below.
The set will contain two versions of the feature (seamlessly branched on the Blu-ray): the 2007 BFI restoration plus the 2012 Hammer restoration, which adds additional footage lost for decades.
The additional footage comprises two of the scenes that were originally censored by the BBFC in 1958 that have now been restored to the film from reels found in Japan: Dracula's seduction of Mina, and Dracula's sunlight disintegration.

Thunderbirds creator who made some of the most popular children's TV shows of the 1960s
Gerry Anderson, who has died aged 83 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was the main mover behind a number of puppet series commissioned by Lew Grade's Independent Television Corporation. They made the company a fortune from the space age: perhaps the best known was Thunderbirds (1965-66), and among the others were Fireball XL5 (1962-63), Stingray (1964) and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-68).
Anderson embarked on Thunderbirds in 1964. For Grade, international sales – particularly into the Us market – were a key concern. So Thunderbirds focused on the Tracy brothers, with first names borrowed from the Us astronauts Scott Carpenter, Virgil Grissom, Alan Shepard, John Glenn and Gordon Cooper. Enormously popular in its time, the series is still being repeated today.

Hammer Blu-rays The Devil Rides Out (1968, dir. Terence Fisher)
Hammer applies its trademark Gothic veneer with considerably greater care than usual in this, the second and best of the company's three stabs at the satanic stylings of author Dennis Wheatley. Christopher Lee comes over to the light for a rare foray as central hero the Duc de Richleau, teaming up with friend Rex van Rijn (Leon Greene) to prevent the evil Satanist Mocata (Charles Gray) from enmeshing the son of his old friend (Patrick Mower) into a devil-worshipping cult.
The Devil Rides Out is perhaps best remembered for what Lee argues in his commentary to be Hammer's most enduring image, that of our heroes fighting a series of spectral and psychological nemeses from within the protective confines of a ritual circle. And yet the most chilling scene contains no special effects, but is instead a simple conversation between the wife...

Hammer Studios holds a special place in my heart based on my horror upbringing. My father’s love of the gothic horror films from the classic British studio certainly made an impact on me. At the time, I was more interested in reading the most recent Goosebumps book or catching the new episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? or Tales From the Crypt than watching the more “boring” horror films. My attention level for the classics was always waning as the characters seemed stiff in their period piece garb and the stories moved slower than to my liking. However, I was always captivated whenever the monster was onscreen. Whether it was the voodoo controlled zombies of The Plague of the Zombies or Oliver Reed’s brooding creature in The Curse of the Werewolf, I instantly was held captive by the films when the monsters terrorized my television screen.

Deranged director Tom Six has big plans for a "Human Centipede 3" film. We're not lying when we say it's huge.
The controversial filmmaker recently took to Twitter (via Dread Central) and told followers he wants to feature a 500 plus person pede in the third gruesome installment of his detestable franchise. He'll start filming the movie this summer down south, aiming for a 2013 release. The third "Human Centipede" will feature stars Dieter Laser (the crazed surgeon from the first film) and Laurence R. Harvey (the insane parking lot attendant from the second movie), and even the director himself in a bit role. Like always, Six promises that the film will be "100 percent politically incorrect."
Has the director gone too far this time? Do you think he'll attempt to make his monstrous creation with live actors or end up using CG? Try to erase the image from your mind entirely, and head...

Dracula Resurrected. That would be a good title (methinks) for a new Hammer Films release starring Jean Dujardin as Count Dracula. What? Hammer and Dracula together again? Well, read on… Thanks to the success of the Daniel Radcliffe vehicle The Woman in Black, the recently resurrected Hammer Films may try its hand at another Dracula movie, says Jonathan James in The Daily Dead. During a recent interview with Hammer historian Marcus Hearn, The Daily Dead learned that Hammer is planning a Dracula movie set in the 21st century. Said Hearn: “The company’s chairman, Simon Oakes, is talking about making a new Dracula, and setting it in present-day London. It’s fun to speculate who could step into Christopher Lee’s shoes. Just last year I would probably have dismissed the idea of another Hammer Dracula as quite far-fetched, but I think the success of The Woman in Black has...

The Hammer Vault was published late last year and was one of my favorite horror releases of 2011. Not only was it a great way to get new horror fans up to speed on the history of Hammer, but it contained rare and never before seen materials you could only find in the book.
I recently had a chance to talk with author and Hammer historian Marcus Hearn, who told me about the inspiration for the book, researching classic films, and the possibility of a new Dracula movie from Hammer:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. For any readers who may be unfamiliar with your previous work, can you tell them a bit about your earlier Hammer book releases and relationship with the company?

Though Bela Lugosi usually gets all the love, lots of actors have portrayed the role of the nefarious Count Dracula. Of special note is the portrayal given by Christopher Lee for Hammer, which is widely regarded as the best of them all. Hammer knew what they were doing, and they're now looking to rekindle some long burned out fires.
Our friends over at The Daily Dead recently caught up with Hammer historian, author Marcus Hearn, who reports that the newly relaunched studio has interest in sharpening up the old fangs.

Cinema Retro is always on the lookout for classic and cult movies being screened in unique ways by film clubs and societies. We seem to have found one that could really top them all- literally at a dead end!
I learned about The Flicker Club via the B-Movie Podcast (www.bmoviecast.com) recently and I was intrigued. This February they ran a short season of Hammer Films. Nothing exceptional about that, you may say, bar the fact that they have screened rarities such as The Reptile, The Witches and the obscure The Lost Continent. If that wasn’t enough, in conjunction with Hammer, they screened the newly restored Dracula from 1958 with found footage that was missing for decades.. However- wonderful though this is - it is the location and the way in which the Flicker Club screened these gems that elevates them beyond the norm.

A long time ago, in an obscure European country far, far away there existed creatures of the night who didn't sparkle, who didn't wander around with pained expressions on their faces, and who didn't look like they'd just stepped out of a My Chemical Romance video. The most famous, or should that be infamous, of them all was Dracula, the undisputed Lord of the Undead, and the subject of many, many movies over the years; but none of which captured the quintessential essence of a great vampire flick quite as well as Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966).
Described by Hammer Films historian Marcus Hearn, who appears in a new half hour retrospective of the flick in the extras, as perhaps the most representative of all the Hammer Dracula films due to the inclusion of several vital ingredients - including the brooding manservant, the remote European locale, the well-to-do English characters adrift abroad,...

British film studio and kings of the horror movie, Hammer, have announced that the Cinema And Television History (Cath) Research Centre at Leicester De Montfort University has been chosen to be the custodian of Hammer’s archive of scripts.

On the eve of Woman In Black’s appearance in U.S. theaters, Hammer has provided a thorough update on the restoration process happening with a number of their catalog titles, an exciting project we first reported several weeks ago. I spoke with Hammer CEO Simon Oakes this morning and got the scoop on all thing past, present, and future with the historic brand, and you will love reading all about it in the next issue of Famous Monsters. Sneak peek: there are more titles in the restoration queue than what they have listed below, and yes, there will be “re-boots” of some of their biggest titles.
For now, here is the latest on the restoration, courtesy Hammer:

Last week, Hammer announced that they will be restoring a number of their classic horror films for release on Blu-ray.
