"The Simpsons" has a long history of parodying Batman. Bart Simpson has the masked alter ego Bartman, who even starred in his own six-issue spin-off comic. Season 4 classic "Mr. Plow," one of the best "Simpsons" episodes, features Adam West as himself; he laments the lack of Robin (and the Batusi dance) in the then-contemporary Tim Burton "Batman" movies. You can draw a straight line from West parodying himself like this to his eventual recurring role on "Family Guy."
In "The Simpsons" season 24's "Dark Knight Court," Mr. Burns and Smithers stumble into the Android's Dungeon, where Burns rediscovers his childhood love of comic books. Reading the copyright-friendly "Detection Comics," Monty has his "he just like me Fr!" moment with Batman. So, he decides to become a caped crusader of the night as Fruit Bat Man, whose exploits are scored to music much like Hans Zimmer's operatic "Dark Knight" trilogy score.

The House of Representatives still doesn’t have a speaker after Kevin McCarthy has failed to win multiple votes for the leadership position, and late night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel are thrilled.
“No one, literally no one, and I called people who know things, no one knows what happens now,” Colbert said of the impasse in the Republican-led chamber, on CBS’ Late Show Wednesday night. “Here’s what we do know: It’s fantastic!”
Later, after a news clip was shown of McCarthy saying he wouldn’t withdraw from the race, Colbert said, “Oh Kevin, let it go. Don’t you know one of the things about dreams is sometimes they die? Except for my dream, where you keep losing over and over again!”
He continued to quip, “Nobody pinch me. I don’t want to wake up, mom. I don’t want to go to school today.

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.
The annual awards, which honor the best in film, TV, and radio writing, were handed out at dual ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.
Both “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” are in the running for Oscars in their respective categories.
“Parasite” bested three Best Original Screenplay nominees up for the Writers Guild Award: “1917,” “Knives Out,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite.” The WGA swapped the fifth Oscar-nominated script, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in favor of a nomination for “Booksmart.”

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Much has been made about “Veep” never winning a Golden Globe, but did you know it’s also never won at the Producers Guild Awards? Sure enough, this year’s nomination marks the sixth and final PGA bid for HBO’s political comedy series, which ended its run last May. As this is the era of Peak TV, more and more worthy shows are going to be left out in the cold, we get that. But for “Veep,” a three-time Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series, to never earn recognition from the PGA Awards, this seems like a trend Selina Meyer should veto.

The first time “Veep” was nominated by the producers guild was for its 2013 season. “Modern Family” was still flying high at awards shows across the board, with that year being its fourth and final victory at PGA.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. The International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, announced nominations today for the 38th Annual Annie Awards™ recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation including best animated feature, television production, commercials, short subjects, video games and outstanding individual achievements.
Two years ago, Kung-Fu Panda swept the awards over Wall-e pushing Disney and Pixar to withdraw from the organization and making everyone else wonder if there is any point in caring anymore about the ceremony. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, but DreamWorks (who pretty much run the show) lead the nominees.
According to /film, Disney’s reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization’s very loose membership requirements and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio’s favour. Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull said earlier this year,
“After more than a year of discussions with the Asifa board,...

The full list of nominations for the 38th Annie Awards were announced today with Dreamworks’s How to Train your Dragon gathering up the majority of nominations including Best Feature, Animation, Character Design and Voice Work for Gerard Butler and Jay Baruchel, as well as Directing nominations for Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois.
Pixar’s Up took home the Best Animated Feature earlier this year at the 2009 awards and when the awards are announced next February Lee Unkrich and his team are up from a number of awards, along with Disney’s Tangled, but the recent decision of Disney to withdraw support for the awards may go some way to explaining the relatively few number of nods.
It has been a great year for animation as the films on the list below attest, and it’s nice to see Sylvain Chomet’s enchanting film The Illusionist scoring a point against the domination of CG here.

DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" flew high above competition by nabbing 15 nominations for the 38th annual Annie Awards given by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood. ("How to Train Your Dragon" movie review)

The month of December, January, and February pretty much means near-daily updates of award nominations and selections. The latest is for the 38th Annual Annie Awards, awarding excellence in the animation area. Leading the pack is How To Train Your Dragon, a film I recently re-watched and loved just as much as in the theater. Disney has tough competition in the form of itself this year, as “Tangled” and “Toy Story 3″ will compete against one another, along with a host of other fantastic animated films, at the 38th Annual Annie Awards.
The Annie Awards will be a battleground for the upcoming Oscar animation awards. This year, only three animated films will be nominated. Why? Because the rules that govern the Oscars are laughably outmoded. But that’s beside the point.
Fact is, the Annie Awards deserve attention amongst the many other awards shows because so many great animated films were released in 2010, arguably more than traditional films. “Tangled,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Despicable Me” and “The Illusionist” will jostle for the Best Animated Feature award.
Here’s a list of all the nominees.

The International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood has announced the nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Awards, and the DreamWorks feature How to Train Your Dragon leads the pack with more than ten nods. But there's a caveat; that and the full list of nominations after the break. This will be the first Annie Awards after Disney and Pixar withdrew from the organization [1] that organizes the awards. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, and Lee Unkrich was nominated Best Director. But in the feature deaprtment this is DreamWorks' show, with a few nods toward the Warner Bros. film Legend of the Guardians and a scant few other features such as The Illusionist. Disney's reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization's very loose membership requirements (read: almost non-existent requirements, until recently) and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio's favor.

Chicago – “Every Child Left Behind” could be the subtitle of this stunning new documentary, “Waiting for Superman,” directed by Davis Guggenheim, the helmsman of another major doc, “An Inconvenient Truth.” The other truth in this new film is that the American system of public schooling is bent and broken in many places, risking our very future.

The title refers to the type of effort it will take to make a change in the public schooling system. The government bureaucracy, the teacher’s unions and the dichotomy between rich and poor have conspired to create a unyieldingly flawed system of education. HollywoodNews.com: Paramount Pictures, Participant Media and Walden Media announced today 60,000 people have pledged to see the award-winning documentary film “Waiting for ‘Superman’” when it opens this fall, making it the fourth goal reached on the campaign’s “Pledge Progress Meter.” As a result, First Book and global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (Hmh) will distribute an additional $100,000 worth of new books to schools and programs in low-income communities across the country. First Book and Hmh initially joined forces at the 50,000 level by donating 250,000 new books in a similar fashion. The books will be generously provided by Hmh and distributed through First Book’s award-winning book distribution channels.
“We’re thrilled by the opportunity to continue our support of “Waiting for ‘Superman’”,” said Barry O’Callaghan, Hmh’s Chief Executive Officer. “Together with First Book, we can use this opportunity to put better educational resources in the hands of the nation’s teachers and students.

Of all the subjects available to documentary filmmakers today, the decline of public education stands out as one that impacts so many lives. So it's no surprise that director Davis Guggenheim follows up his global warming/Al Gore doc "An Inconvenient Truth" and his recent music doc "It Might Get Loud" with "Waiting For Superman", a look at plummeting public education standards including low scores in reading and arithmetic and fewer teens graduating to college. Guggenheim and co-writer Billy Kimball touch on all the obstacles, school district bureaucracy, teacher apathy and inflexible unions. What makes "Waiting For Superman" fascinating is the way Guggenheim wisely wraps the complex topic around some five young faces and follows their attempts at gaining a quality education. The film enjoyed the perfect mix of critical praise and favorable audience reaction when recently premiering in U.S. Documentary competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. That's good news for Paramount,...

The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.

"Up" from Disney/Pixar won the top honor at the 37th Annual Annie Awards. The fantastic film received the Best Animated Feature Award beating out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Princess and the Frog," and "The Secret of Kells."
(Check my interview with Annie Award-winner Pete Docter for "Up" held at Pixar Animation Studios right here)
Walt Disney Animation took home six other Annies including three for "The Princess and the Frog" and three for its television production "Prep and Landing."
Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards is considered the highest and most prestigious honor given in animation by the animation industry.
The Annie Awards is also a great predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So yes, "Up" will win that category at the Oscars!
