Former GOP Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colorado) slammed GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for getting talking points from Russian President Vladimir Putin while threatening to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Now that Congress has returned from recess, Johnson has to figure out how he can pass new aid for Ukraine, something that far-right Republicans such as Greene oppose.
Greene slammed Johnson for holding a vote to fund Ukraine, saying it was one of the most “egregious things” he could do.
“Moscow Marjorie is focused now on this Ukraine issue, getting her talking points from the Kremlin, making sure she is popular, and getting a lot of coverage,’ Buck told CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront.
Buck, one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, accused the Georgia representative of always focusing on her social media account instead of the national interest.

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

The Tony Award nominations are set to take place April 30, and in the lead-up, the month is jam-packed with Broadway openings, with 14 taking place over the course of 11 days.
While the days before the Tony Awards eligibility cutoff, on April 25, are typically filled with openings, many industry insiders are optimistic that this year’s rush spells somewhat of a return to normalcy. But with the influx of shows and changing audience makeup, producers are also anxious about making sure their shows stand out to ticket-buyers and can make it to the Tony Awards ceremony on June 16 and beyond.
“It largely feels very exciting. For the first time in a while, it really feels like we are back to pre-pandemic levels of volume,” says Greg Nobile, producer of several shows on Broadway this season, including the new musicals Lempicka and Illinoise and the play revival of An Enemy of the People.

Republican Rep. Mike Turner accused some of his colleagues of having “uttered” Russian propaganda “on the House floor” amid Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The mysterious “Havana syndrome” illness that has affected U.S. diplomats and spies may have ties to Russia. The findings came from The Insider, Der Spiegel and CBS’s 60 Minutes investigation.
Havana syndrome refers to a series of symptoms affecting U.S. diplomats and spies who spent time in Havana, Cuba and other nations serving the federal government. The first reports of this illness originated in 2016 from U.S. and Canadian officials in Cuba.
Over the years, government officials have reported similar experiences globally in countries such as China and India. The illnesses were also known as “anomalous health incidents.” Symptoms include dizziness, headaches, tinnitus and even cognitive impairment.
Investigations into the illnesses hypothesized that they were the result of “acoustic weapons” or “sonic attacks,” but findings have not been conclusive. Now, a report from 60 Minutes claims Russia is behind “Havana syndrome.”
The Kremlin denied these claims, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling reporters,...

Former President Bill Clinton plans to debut a memoir about his experiences after his presidency, with with publication date set for November 19.
In a statement, the former president said that the memoir, Citizen: My Life After the White House, “is the story of my twenty-three-plus years since leaving the White House, told largely through the stories of other people who changed my life as I tried to help change theirs, of those who supported me, including those I loved and lost, and of the mistakes I made along the way.”
Alfred A. Knopf will publish the memoir, which it says will be “remarkably candid” and “richly detailed.” While Clinton writes about major issues and cultural wars since he left office, the publisher also indicated that Clinton will share his experiences during the 2008 and 2016 elections, when his wife, Hillary Clinton, ran for the presidency. Thanks to Vladimir Putin, Russia might soon have its own video game console entering the market. By soon, that would be a minimum of 5 years according to the proposal.
In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed the government to explore the possibility of entering the gaming hardware market. This directive possibly comes as a reaction to the broad steps that other video game companies have taken in Russia.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich appears in an undated photograph.
News organizations and press freedom groups have marked one year since a Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested and detained in Russia on unsubstantiated charges of spying.
Evan Gershkovich, an American citizen, was detained by Russian security officials in the town of Yekaterinburg while he was having dinner with an acquaintance.
Gershkovich was fully accredited to work under Russian law, with the Journal obtaining all necessary press credentials to allow him to work in the country.
The journalist has been detained on espionage charges in Russia for the past year, with a local judge denying requests to release him on bail. No one from the Russian government has produced any public evidence to support the charges, which the Journal describes as baseless.

On Friday, four gunmen killed more than 130 people in Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. Over 100 more people are hospitalized. The men, who are citizens of Tajikistan, were taken into custody. Following the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the men had ties to the radical Islamic terrorist group Isis.
The attack is said to be the worst terror attack in 20 years and the deadliest Isis attack in Europe. Video footage from the men’s bodycams has been released. Isis also released an alleged photo of the four men wearing masks and posing in front of their flag.
However, Putin is also shifting the blame onto Ukraine despite no evidence of its involvement.
In a statement on Saturday, Putin claimed the four gunmen were “traveling toward Ukraine” where they would receive help to cross the border.

Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow was published in 2016, five years before Russia’s top opposition leader (and Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe) Alexei Navalny returned to his homeland and was immediately imprisoned. Showtime’s eight-part adaptation of Towles’s novel, about a Navalny-like political prisoner in Russia, serendipitously makes its premiere not long after Navalny died in a Russian prison camp. But the comparisons between reality and fiction largely end there. A Gentleman in Moscow is a glossy, romanticized series that mostly suggests rather than shows the horrors of a totalitarian regime.
The story of the show echoes Navalny’s with its occasionally tin-eared, though still potent, portrayal of an unlikely dissident who refuses to abandon his country but has limited means to fight for it. In 1921, the perky-mustached Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is given a life sentence by a Soviet court for vague counterrevolutionary reasons. But instead of a gulag,...

Lev Parnas, the former associate of Rudy Giuliani, testified to Congress that he participated in a coordinated effort to accuse President Joe Biden‘s family of corruption. Parnass stated that former President Donald Trump, Giuliani and many GOP politicians and conservative media members helped spread these lies.
Parnas was sentenced in June 2022 for fraud and campaign finance crimes.
On March 21, he gave his testimony at Biden’s impeachment hearing after Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) asked him about when “the campaign to dig up dirt on Biden” turned into “a campaign to spread disinformation and lies about Biden.”
“Shortly after my arrest on October 9, 2019, to now, I have been trying to share the irrefutable truth with you,” Parnas stated. “The American people have been lied to by Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and various cohorts of individuals in government and media positions. Less than two weeks after 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, another important film about Ukraine has bowed on the world stage.
A Poem for Little People, directed by Ivan Sautkin, held its international premiere Thursday at Cph:dox in Copenhagen. It screens again on Saturday. In cinéma vérité style, the film documents the most vulnerable people on front lines of the war in Ukraine, and the volunteers of an evacuation team who risk their lives to save them.
“Through its two parallel plotlines, the film follows the exploits of a volunteer evacuation team in the front lines of Eastern Ukraine, led by young, precociously stoic Anton, as well as the wartime daily lives and unlikely friendship of two elderly women – pragmatic Zinaida and dreamy, starry-eyed Taisia – who decided to stay at their homes in the now de-occupied Chernihiv region,” according to a synopsis of the documentary.

When the National Press Club hosted a post-screening panel on the upcoming movie Anna, about Russian journalist and Vladimir Putin critic Anna Politkovskaya, the conversation — to not much of a surprise — led to Donald Trump and what his potential return to the White House would mean for democracy.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-ca) and former CIA director John Brennan joined journalist Bob Woodward for the post-screening event Wednesday evening, and each chimed in on the potential impact of another Trump presidency.
Woodward, who released 20 audio interviews with Trump as part of The Trump Tapes in 2022, said, “I think an important question about Trump is, ‘Who is he?'”

Updated, with additional details from the hearing: The three major news networks largely bypassed live coverage of the latest chapter in a House GOP-led inquiry of whether to impeach President Joe Biden.
That in and of itself was a sign of just how much the effort has been losing steam, even among Republican lawmakers.
The House Oversight hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office,” featured Tony Bobulinski a former associate of Hunter Biden. Also testifying, albeit remotely, was Jason Galanis, another associate, who is in an Alabama prison serving a sentence for securities fraud.
Also testifying, as a Democratic witness, was Lev Parnas, a former associate of Rudy Giuliani. Parnas said that Giuliani, in advance of the 2020 presidential election, trafficked in false claims that the Biden’s were involved in a Ukrainian corruption scheme, and that the Russians were behind the disinformation effort.

Vladimir Putin’s Run-In With Greenpeace & Paul McCartney To Be Spotlighted In BBC Documentary Series
Exclusive: Vladimir Putin’s 10-year-old battle with a group of Greenpeace protestors that attracted the attention of none other than Paul McCartney is to be spotlighted in a BBC documentary series.
Curve Media’s On Thin Ice: Putin V Greenpeace (working title) is being positioned as the BBC’s latest box-set series and will break with tradition by airing via bitesized half-hour episodes.
The series will follow what happened when a group of climate activists on a daring mission to disrupt Russia’s Arctic oil production unwittingly sailed into a pivotal moment in Putin’s relationship with the West in 2013.
Known as the Arctic 30, the group had wanted to film a protest and discourage an international Arctic oil rush, but they were arrested and incarcerated in a brutal Russian prison. Russian security services had been monitoring their activities and word came from the very top: the protestors would be made...

Leonid Volkov, the former chief of staff of late Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, was attacked on Tuesday outside his house in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Navalny’s former press person and assistant Kira Yarmysh reported the attack on social media.
“Leonid Volkov has just been attacked near his home. They broke the window in his car and sprayed tear gas in his eyes, after which the attacker began to beat Leonid with a hammer. Now Leonid is at home, the police and an ambulance are on their way to him,” she wrote in a post on X.
A later post on the Team Navalny X handle showed a photo of Volkov being wheeled out of an ambulance.

If Vladimir Putin was watching the Academy Awards on Sunday night from his dacha on the Black Sea, his mood may have been blackened by the Best Documentary Feature category. As Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast had predicted, the Oscar went to 20 Days in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing film about the early days of Russia’s brutal siege of the Ukrainian port city.
Chernov delivered emotional remarks as he accepted the Oscar, saying he would gladly trade his trophy for the lives of the thousands of Ukrainian civilians killed by Russia’s aggression. Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera served as presenters for that category as well as for Best Documentary Short; Doc Talk called that race accurately as well, predicting victory for The Last Repair Shop, the film by Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers.

Beta Film has acquired international distribution rights to Serbian crime thriller “Operation Sabre” (“Sablja”) about the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić.
The eight-hour series – selected for Canneseries’ Long Form Competition – is created and directed by Goran Stanković and Vladimir Tagić. The duo already collaborated on “Morning Changes Everything” and wrote the new show alongside Dejan Prćić, Maja Pelević and Marjan Alčevs.
Heading back to March 12, 2003, Stanković and Tagić show the aftermath of the killing that threw the whole country into chaos – only one year after the beginning of the trial against former president Slobodan Milošević, indicted in 1999 for war crimes.
Đinđić, who served as Pm from 2001, following a stint as mayor of Belgrade, advocated pro-democratic reforms. He was also one of the co-leaders of the opposition to Milošević’s administration.

An awards season unlike any other — during which the first simultaneous strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood history largely prevented campaigning by talent for months — came to an end Sunday night at the 96th Academy Awards.
As was widely expected, Oppenheimer dominated, winning seven Oscars — no film has won more since Slumdog Millionaire snagged eight, 15 years ago — including for best picture (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven), director (Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy, the category’s first Irish winner), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), film editing (Jennifer Lame) and original score (Lugwig Göransson).
That’s quite an achievement for not just the filmmakers, who adapted a book (Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer) that many thought was unadaptable into a riveting instant classic of a film, but also for the teams that sold it...

Usually winning an Academy Award is cause for massive celebration, but when you're journalist Mstyslav Chernov and you just won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for a film that documents the horrors of war in your home country, things are a little bit more complicated. Chernov's directorial debut, "20 Days in Mariupol," follows him and his Associated Press news unit after they became trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol during the early days of Russia's invasion into Ukraine.
Accepting the award at the 96th Academy Awards, Chernov explained that while he was thankful to everyone who helped him with the film and along its journey, he would rather he had never made the film at all. That seems like it would be a pretty shocking statement in any other circumstances, but given the horror and anguish that comes with the creation of Chernov's film, it's honestly pretty understandable.

In one of the most competitive races in years, 20 Days in Mariupol won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature tonight, earning director Mstyslav Chernov an Academy Award to go with a Pulitzer Prize.
The film from the Associated Press, PBS’ Frontline and GBH came into the night a slight favorite but faced a tough test from fellow nominees Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and To Kill a Tiger. The documentary, which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, centers on the harrowing siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country. Thousands of civilians were killed in Russia’s assault.
On the Osar stage, Chernov, a native of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, thanked his collaborators and said, “This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history. And I’m honored.” But with rising emotion,...

President Joe Biden, in his first sit down interview since his State of the Union address, addressed one moment of the speech when he was responding to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga).
MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart asked Biden about his use of the term “illegal” when he was talking about the suspect who allegedly killed Laken Riley.
“An undocumented person,” Biden said. “I shouldn’t have used illegal, it’s undocumented. And look, when I spoke about the difference between Trump and me, one of the things I talked about in the border was his, the way he talks about vermin, the way he talks about these people polluting the blood. I talked about what I’m not going to do. What I won’t do. I’m not going to treat any, any, any of these people with disrespect. Look, they built the country. The reason our economy is growing.

In a State of the Union address that left no doubt about his target, President Joe Biden launched a scathing critique of his predecessor, Donald Trump. Without using his name, Biden labeled Trump an adversary of democracy and the global liberal order.
The State of the Union Address is a customary speech given by the president of the United States to both houses of Congress, typically held at the start of each calendar year. Its purpose is to provide an update on the current state of the nation.
Ahead of their anticipated November rematch, Biden referred to “my predecessor” on 13 occasions, challenging Trump’s anti-NATO rhetoric and his baseless claims of election fraud that incited the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol.
Biden said, “My predecessor and some of you here seek to bury the truth about January 6. I will not do that…This is a moment to speak...

Alexei Navalny’s sacrifice for democracy is being recognized in the place where the concept of government by the people first flourished.
Greece’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival programmed the documentary Navalny in honor of the Russian opposition leader and democratic reformer, who died in an Arctic prison in northern Russia on February 16. The film directed by Daniel Roher won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature almost exactly a year ago.
Navalny examines the anti-corruption crusader’s effort to investigate an incident in 2020 in which he fell grievously ill after being secretly dosed with the neurotoxin Novichok. With help from a Bulgarian investigative journalist, Navalny determined the assassination plot had been implemented by Kremlin agents. After recuperating in Germany, Navalny made the fateful decision to return to Russia in 2021, whereupon he was immediately arrested and later tried and imprisoned.

Updated on March 10, 2024, at 5:43 am Pt with comments from Oliver Stone.
A team of investigative journalists in Europe has published a new report that links Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone to a planned series of documentaries intended to act as de facto propaganda for several autocratic leaders worldwide.
The investigation — a joint effort by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (Occrp), German public broadcaster Zdf, Austrian newspaper Der Standard, German news magazine Der Spiegel and independent Kazakhstan media outlet Vlast — found that Russian American producer Igor Lopatonok pitched a series of hagiographic documentaries about such notorious leaders as Belarus strongman Alexander Lukashenko, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which were to star Stone as the on-air interviewer.
In an interview with Occrp, Lopatonok said Stone was aware of the projects and supported them, though the investigation did not turn up a direct link to the director to support that claim.

When Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) addresses the citizens of her unnamed Central European country, she doesn’t sound like a politician. “My loves,” she coos in a plummy, posh accent, further softened by a hint of a lisp. “I bless you all, and I bless our love. Always.” Seven years into her reign, this signoff suggests that Vernham has transcended the role of head of state, or even autocratic strongwoman. The propaganda videos she records from her palace, a luxury hotel turned personal residence, are closer to guided meditations than ideological sermons. The relationship between this ruler and her subjects, Vernham seems to believe, is more intimate and emotional than mere governance.
Before creating “The Regime,” the six-episode HBO series set in Vernham’s impenetrable echo chamber, writer Will Tracy worked on “Succession.” Just as Logan Roy was a composite of various Irl oligarchs, Vernham can’t be traced to any single inspiration.

Recent intelligence from the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering increasing the maximum age for its military personnel to 70. The Kremlin has reportedly drafted legislation to raise the age limit for military contract personnel, which includes those recruited before June 2023, to 65 years for non-officers and 70 years for officers.
Released on Tuesday, the MoD’s update highlighted that this proposed change would significantly surpass the current age limit of 51 for non-officers. It is expected that the extension of the age limit would also lead to longer contract durations.
The MoD noted that the life expectancy for Russian males in 2021 was 64.2 years; therefore, raising the maximum age for military service would effectively impose a “lifetime contract” on service personnel.
While this measure may alleviate the need for additional mobilization, the MoD was skeptical about the impact on Russia’s combat effectiveness, particularly in kinetic assaults.

Brian Blessed is only 87 years old, but he has lived enough adventures for 10 lifetimes. He has been acting professionally since 1957, and has since racked up hundreds of credits on stage, screen, and in video games. His enormous frame (and beard) cut a striking figure, and his big booming voice could likely be heard from the moon. He's played Shakespeare, Dumas, Doyle, Asterix, "Doctor Who," "Flash Gordon," and "Peppa Pig."
In 1963, Blessed helped deliver a baby in public. He bit through the umbilical cord to complete his task, and licked the infant's face to comfort it. He had attempted to scale Mount Everest on three occasions, each time with assisted oxygen. He has also summited Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Aconcagua. He survived a plane crash in the jungles the Venezuela. He once hiked to the North Pole on foot and claims to have punched a polar bear in the nose. As of this writing,...

Former Fox New host Tucker Carlson claimed that Moscow is a far nicer place when compared to any city in America.
“I am a patriotic American and I grieve when I see that the president is a non compos mentis, and that in my country, it is considered very rude to say that,” Carlson said during an interview at the World Government Summit 2024. “And you sort of wonder how did you get to a place where you have an incompetent president who’s driven, not simply the standard of living, but life expectancy downward and no one feels free to say that that’s not a political observation, it’s a statement of fact which is provable empirically.”
“And the most radicalizing thing for me in the eight days I spent in Moscow was not just the leader of the country [Vladimir Putin], who, of course, is impressive,” he claimed.

Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan’s upcoming play Patriots.
The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.
The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.

Netflix has joined as a producer of the stage play Patriots, marking the media giant’s first Broadway producing credit.
The play, which is written by Peter Morgan, creator of the Netflix series, The Crown, is set in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and follows a Russian billionaire, Boris Berezovsky, trying to recruit a then-unknown Vladimir Putin to run for president. But Putin’s rise to power soon threatens Berezovsky’s own interests, putting the two at odds.
A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that the company is developing a screen adaptation of the play, as had been reported in the New York Times.
While this is Netflix’s first Broadway credit, the streamer is also a producer on the currently running London production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is a prequel to the Netflix series.

Former President Donald Trump denied having cognitive issues during a confusing 87-minute speech at Cpac. Trump claimed he didn’t “ramble” and that his stories were “very informative.” He also questioned President Joe Biden‘s cognitive state.
Biden’s memory has been under scrutiny during his presidency. A majority of voters expressed concern about the president’s ability to lead the country if elected for another term in recent polls. Biden is currently 81 years old.
Recently, Trump has also been questioned about his own cognitive issues. The former president, 77, has been known to ramble during his speeches. Trump mixed up his presidential candidate Nikki Haley with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi repeatedly in one speech.
Trump often claims he took a mental competency test and “aced it.”
During his speech at Cpac, Trump agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Biden should be the next president, raising confusion.
“I talked to Putin a lot.

It’s a good thing Jon Stewart agreed to return to The Daily Show. In the most recent episode, the temporary host decided to take it upon himself to solve the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, which culminated in the current Israel-Hamas war.
The late-night host recapped the war, explaining the recent reactions on all sides. He criticized the Biden administration for telling Israel to be more careful. “‘Could you please be more careful when you’re bombing?’ It’s good advice,” Stewart quipped. “But couldn’t the United...
